While the live-action Justice League movie is divisive, the animated escapades of DC's premier hero team have always enjoyed a much more positive reception among both fans and critics. They're thrilling, bold, fun, and everything an animated superhero movie should be.
Over the years, DC Comics has produced a massive library of animated films. Some feature the Justice League in cameos or as part of a larger ensemble, while others throw the heroic team into the spotlight. From fun Lego adventures and alternate universes to space conflicts and nail-biting thrillers, the Justice League makes any DC animated film feel epic.

When we think of Mark Harmon, the image that instantly comes to our mind is his portrayal of the stoic and sharp-witted Leroy Jethro Gibs on NCIS. The cornerstone of one of television’s longest-running TV shows and most beloved crime drama, Harmon is best known for his effortless on-screen charm and nuanced portrayals.

Over the many years of his career, the actor has been in several TV shows and movies and even dabbled in theatre. However, there is more to his persona and career than what meets the eye. Beyond his television success, Harmon once even donned the mantle of DC’s Superman.

While most Dceu actors aren't part of DC Studios' Dcu plans, The Suicide Squad star Sean Gunn has already landed multiple roles in the reboot being mapped out by his brother, James Gunn.
The Guardians of the Galaxy standout has stolen the show in Creature Commandos as G.I. Robot and reprised his previous role, Weasel, as well. While he'll likely lend his voice to both characters in live-action somewhere down the line, Gunn's main on-camera role will be as the villainous Maxwell Lord.
The character is expected to be less of a full-blown baddie and more of an antagonist in the Dcu, bringing the Wonder Woman 1984 character (where he was played by Pedro Pascal) more in line with his comic book counterpart.
Superman set photos showcased the "LordTech" logo and it appears Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific all work for the businessman who, in the comics,...

Warning: Spoilers for Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet #2!The star of Static Shock is far from the first hero in Milestone history. The popularity of his DC Animated Universe cartoon from the 2000s has made some fans assume that Virgil Hawkins is the first hero of DC Comics' imprint universe. Alternatively, some fans think Icon - the Milestone equivalent to Superman - is the first superhero to arrive in the Milestone continuity.
Both assumptions are wrong, as neither Static nor Icon are Milestone's first hero. As revealed in Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet #2 by Joseph P. Illidge, Darryl Banks, Atagun Ilhan, Christopher Sotomayor, and Andworld Design, the first superhero in Milestone continuity is the leader of the Shadow Cabinet himself, Dharma.
Dharma even says so himself while speaking to Rocket within the Shadowspire: "Your 'Icon' was not the first superhero in the world ... I was."
Who Is Dharma, Milestone's First Superhero?...

One of the few villains who has never made an appearance in a Superman film is Ultraman. With a new Superman movie coming out next year, rumors have been swirling that one of the main antagonists will be Ultraman, marking his first live-action appearance. If this rumor turns out to be true, it could give Superman the greatest live-action fight of his film career.
Because of the shifting nature and history of comic books, there have been plenty of different versions of Ultraman over the years. The first debuted in 1964's Justice League of America #29 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky. This story explored the history of the very first version of Ultraman, who was markedly different from Superman. Ultraman was sent to Earth-Three from Krypton, for reasons not really explained, considering this version of Krypton never exploded.

Commencing with Max’s adult animated series Creature Commandos, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have officially revealed to fans a brand new shared universe spearheaded by James Gunn & Peter Safran, which will further gain traction with James Gunn’s upcoming 2025 release Superman. Establishing various characters throughout DC Comics and putting these figures across films, TV shows, etc. not only connects this universe as one expansive franchise but also offers several artists the chance to explore different genres within the superhero medium.
Whether working in science fiction, fantasy, action or other literary genres, the comic book medium fosters terrific storytelling that has been adapted many times before in the entertainment industry. At the same time, DC Comics has a plethora of great characters who can make any project exciting, where some superheroes could operate in this new Dcu and get a moment to shine amongst other heavy hitters who’ve been in the spotlight before.

All superheroes have their own style when it comes to saving the world, but it's rare for two of them to reach the exact same solution to a problem. One moment that highlights Superman's particular brand of "right" casts doubt on a hero across the aisle, however, as Marvel's Mister Fantastic struggled with a choice that Kal-El made without hesitation. Reed Richards’ heroism comes with strings attached.
In Justice League of America #84 and Fantastic Four #2, Superman and Reed Richards faced very similar situations; both heroes had the chance to essentially nullify their biggest foes, Lex Luthor and Doctor Doom, by refusing to restore their memories. Clark Kent didn’t hesitate to return Luthor to normal, yet Reed hesitates for just a moment.
While Reed does draw the same conclusion about Doom and chooses to restore his mind, he contemplates the alternatives before doing so. Taken side by side, it's an...

You might know George R.R. Martin as the mind behind the biggest book and television show in history: Game of Thrones. But what you probably aren’t aware of is that he’s also self-financed four short films based on the tales of a dear friend.
In the early 1960s, a 15-year-old Martin in Bayonne, New Jersey, was in search of a very rare DC comic. “The Brave and the Bold #28 was very important,” the literary giant tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Because it was the first appearance of the Justice League of America.”
The author managed to find and buy the comic — for a quarter — off of a fellow teenage boy in Arlington, Texas. This boy was named Howard Waldrop, and it was the beginning of a life-long friendship. “I love the guy. I miss him still,” Martin says. “He was certainly my oldest friend in the world of science fiction and fantasy.

Warning: Spoilers for Justice League Unlimited #1The Justice League is back in action after a prolonged hiatus, and its roster has expanded to include every superhero - which means there must be a leader to unify them. Most may expect a popular character like Batman to fill that position, but instead, a lesser-known hero has stepped up to succeed as the Justice League's new leader: Red Tornado.
In Justice League Unlimited #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ariana Maher, the reformed Justice League has assembled in the Watchtower to commence their operations, and the Flash gives newcomer Air Wave a tour of the base's facilities. As he races through the space station at super-speed, he surprises Air Wave by revealing that Red Tornado is in charge of assigning missions to heroes.

DC Comics has been an industry leader in comic books since the 1930s, with key events like the creation of Superman serving as turning points in the superhero genre's history. In order to keep its continuity fresh for new generations of readers, the company has routinely pursued a series of reboots and relaunches, each of which have aimed to simplify things.
For better or worse, each of these has been a success in their own right, typically but not always revitalizing sales figures, as readers flock to stores to see whether the new direction is for them.
DC's reboots can be a tad confusing, especially for new readers who want to understand the publisher's history. It is worth a primer on these critical events for readers, so new fans can recognize the best jumping on points, and get a better sense of what each era of DC has to offer.

The Joker's idea to use Kryptonite paint was a genius way to attack Superman, one that hadn't been attempted before, showcasing the Clown Prince of Crime's deranged creativity as an asset in battling the Man of Steel. The innovative use of Kryptonite paint by Joker forced Superman to face a new threat, evolving traditional anti-Superman tactics in an unexpected way. The Kryptonite paint plan was brilliantly dangerous, trapping Superman in a way never seen before, proving creativity wins over conventional tactics when it comes to facing a being as powerful as him.
At one time or another, many different DC characters have tried to use Kryptonite to take Superman down in a fight, but surprisingly, it was Gotham's most chaotic villain, the Joker, who came up with what is perhaps the DC Universe's most innovative use of the extraterrestrial substance ever: Kryptonite paint.

Spoilers for Birds of Prey #11
Black Canary showcases her power in Birds of Prey #11, tearing apart a dinosaur's head with her sonic scream. Writer Kelly Thompson is nominated for a 2024 Eisner Award for her work on Birds of Prey and other comics, highlighting the evolution of Black Canary's character. Black Canary's leadership, martial arts skills, and powerful voice prove she's more than just a pretty voice.
Black Canary has long been overlooked in DC Comics, either as only a love interest to Green Arrow or as a temporary member of the Justice League. But it's time Dinah Lance was appreciated for the powerhouse she is: from her leadership, to her martial arts skills, and especially to her sonic scream. Especially considering a single canary cry from her can rip a dinosaur's face clean off.

The DC Universe by James Gunn and DC Studios will be hitting the ground running by introducing classic DC characters in a semi-established shared universe in its first several projects. This opens the door for various DC teams and groups to appear, including the Justice League, the Justice Society and the Teen Titans. The latter is poised to have a movie project of their own.
This sense of legacy will be strong in the Dcu, and it already is in the comic books. While there are several great young heroes in the DC Comics universe that might work well in its cinematic counterpart, there are others that likely might not fit as well. For this reason, James Gunn and Peter Saffron could still be selective about which young heroes fight alongside the most iconic superheroes in upcoming projects.

Justice League covers have been iconic, featuring epic battles and memorable artwork. Key issues include the rivalry between Batman and Guy Gardner, the "Countdown to Crisis" story, and the "Tower of Babel" arc. The League's history includes team-ups with the Justice Society of America and significant events like "Crisis on Infinite Earths."
First introduced in the pages of The Brave and the Bold #28, The Justice League quickly became arguably the most iconic superhero team in comics -- especially at DC. Made up of the publisher's A-list heroes, the team has since undergone a variety of changes, and been written into some of the best stories in print. As with any comic book, the title has been sold in part thanks to its eye-catching and thrilling covers, some of which stand out among the best.

This Superman article contains spoilers.
Look, out in the internet! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… a set photo!
James Gunn’s Superman has started shooting in Cleveland, Ohio, where the Man of Steel’s creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster first met, and the set leaks continue unabated. Previous shots gave us looks at David Corenswet in costume as Superman and as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, as well as Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
The latest leak, however, hints at a surprising main villain for this young new Superman. The image shows Superman arrested by the military (again?), escorted by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as (presumably) big bad the Engineer, and a man in what can only be described as a gimp suit.
Rick Flag Sr! The Engineer! Is That The Ultra Man Clone!

One fan-favorite scene in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is from Avengers: Age of Ultron where the Avengers take turns trying to lift Thor’s Mjolnir, unable to accept the fact that you actually need to be “worthy” in order to do so. While Steve Rogers came the closest, no one was actually able to wield the hammer. In the comic books, though, many characters have been able to use the weapon, including Superman.
A still from Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) | Marvel Studios
Since Superman is “worthy” enough to lift Thor’s Mjolnir, it makes us wonder what a fight between Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel and the six O.G. Avengers could look like. Now, this is a long-standing debate amongst fans of DC and Marvel, but when you add Superman’s Mjolnir-lifting ability into the equation, the discussion just gets a lot more interesting.

Justice League stories have spanned decades, from battling Starro to facing Darkseid and complex ethical dilemmas. Scott Snyder's Death Metal saga, Grant Morrison's Tomorrow Woman, Chip Zdarsky's Last Ride showcase the heroes' humanity. Tower of Babel, World War Three, and Kingdom Come present unique challenges that redefine the iconic heroes of the Jla.

In their sixty-four-year history, the team have been written into some of the greatest stories in comics, ranging from alien invasions to Elseworlds "what if" style stories. Firestorm may be powerful, but Darkseid's god-like nature proves he is the true powerhouse in the DC Universe. Despite Firestorm's ability to manipulate matter at the subatomic level, Darkseid easily defeats him by ripping out one of his personas. A true battle between Firestorm and Darkseid would be epic, as their previous encounters have shown Darkseid's godlike power.
Firestorm is one of the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe, but his battles with Darkseid have revealed who is the true powerhouse. Although Firestorm and the Lord of Apokolips have thrown down on only a handful of occasions, their fights have been epic, a true showing of power. Superman star Nathan Fillion appreciates the "flawed" nature of his DC Universe character, Guy Gardner/The Green Lantern. The acclaimed actor suggests Guy's quirks add to his lore and give him the "freedom" to portray the superhero well.
Speaking with Collider, Fillion delved into how he's been preparing to play Guy in Superman and throughout his Dcu run. According to Fillion, Guy knows he's flawed and owns it, making the character more appealing. "The reality is that people have flaws," Fillion said. "We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities. You could have the most wonderful family, but be like, 'Oh, my God, my dad drives me nuts. He's got this one thing.' Everybody's got something, and I love to lean into those faults and flaws. It's what makes people real and what allows audiences to relate, because we all know what that is."

One of DC’s most popular and successful animated series was Justice League: The Animated Series that aired on Cartoon Network between 2001 and 2004. Based on the Justice League of America comics, the show which was a sequel to the Batman and Superman animated series, reached out to a wide audience who turned into hardcore buffs on the franchise.

In 2006's Justice League of America #1, Batman blocked Hawkman from joining Justice League, due to his mistrust of the hero, as a result of their differing crimefighting styles. Despite Superman and Wonder Woman arguing that Hawkman's inclusion on the roster would benef the team, Batman vetoed Hawkman's membership due to concerns over his brutal tactics, and lack of personal trust for the long-time DC hero. Batman prioritizes minimizing damage in combat, leading to a clash with Hawkman's aggressive methods; Hawkman is first and foremost a warrior, and is known for putting down his enemies more brutally than Bruce Wayne would prefer.
It's no secret that Batman doesn't get along with that many people. He's a deeply paranoid and anti-social man, and is not quick to make friends in most situations. What might be surprising though, is that his dislike for one influential DC character actually led him to block this...

There are fast heroes in the DC Universe who don't use the Flash's Speed Force. Red Tornado creates cyclone-like bursts to move several hundred miles an hour, impressive non-Speed Force speed. Green Lanterns can travel instantly thanks to Power Rings, effective but limited by charge.
The Flash is the fastest hero in the DC Universe and it’s all thanks to the mystical phenomenon known as the Speed Force. Barry Allen, Wally West, and their entire family of speedsters are all able to travel incredibly fast thanks to the connection they have to the energy source.
But no one ever said DC’s heroes needed a connection to be a fast hero. In fact, there are plenty of heroes that can run nearly as fast as the Flash (if not completely catch up to him). Read on to discover the fastest heroes in the DC Universe who aren’t blessed...

Some DC heroes face villains who are their exact opposite, mirroring their powers and traits in a dark way. For example, Aquaman battles Thanatos, his dark reflection from a mystical realm who copied his abilities. These dark mirror villains, like Reverse-Flash and Blackfire, challenge DC heroes in unexpected ways, testing their strengths.
The DC Universe is home to just as many unique and identifiable villains as it is superheroes. Nearly every hero in the Justice League has an archenemy that has challenged them in unexpected ways. But the most fascinating villains are those who exist as a ‘reverse’ of their nemesis.

The world of comic books is completely filled with interesting and novel concepts and characters. One of the better ideas that has sprung up from the Marvel Universe is the symbiotes. The symbiotes started with Spider-Man's black suit in the '80s, which quickly morphed into the famous Venom. Venom spawned countless others like Carnage, Sleeper, and many more. Almost every big-time Marvel character has been bonded with a symbiote, at one time or another. However, they are an entirely Marvel creation, so no DC characters have yet had the honor.
Some DC film characters would definitely benefit from having a new, goopy, alien best friend. The symbiotes are absolutely explosive in live-action, as demonstrated by Spider-Man 3 and the Venom movies. Ideally, a symbiote either enhances a character or changes how they interact with the world. This can mean completely overhauling a character's powerset, or complimenting the skills already there.

Green Arrow's trick arrows are legendary, with unconventional options like the Boxing Glove Arrow and Mind-Reading Arrow standing out among the most memorable. However, there is one arrow in Oliver Queen's quiver that is much more powerful than anything else he has. In Justice League of America #65, Green Arrow unveils his most destructive arrow: the Atomic Warhead Arrow. While a Kryptonite arrow can harm Superman, the Atomic Warhead Arrow also has the potential to cause serious damage to the Man of Steel.
One trademark of DC's Green Arrow is his absurd numbers of trick arrows. Ollie has used Boxing Glove Arrows, Iron-Lung Arrows, Mind-Reading Arrows, and even Kryptonite Arrows in his time fighting crime. Some readers might assume the Kryptonite arrow is the only arrow Oliver has in his arsenal that could harm Superman – but it turns out Oliver has one rarely-used arrow that could take down the Man of Steel.

Some members of the Justice League have crossed ethical boundaries, using brutal methods or resorting to villainous tactics to achieve their goals. Characters like Catwoman, Lex Luthor, and Killer Frost have served on the Justice League but have displayed cruel and morally questionable behavior. The Justice League has had its fair share of ruthless members, including Batman, Constantine, and Darkseid, who have prioritized their own agendas and wielded power without restraint.

For many, Saturday mornings consisted of pajamas, cereal, and a steady stream of cartoons. Names like The Flintstones or Captain Caveman still evoke warm memories to this day. Few cartoons, though, seemed to be on the air throughout the reign of Saturday morning cartoons. Scooby-Doo is one that seemed to perpetually be on TV, starting with the 1969 debut of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! to A Pup Named Scooby-Doo in 1988, with many iterations in between and beyond (including the loathed introduction of Scrappy-Doo in 1979's Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo). Another is Super Friends, the cartoon that brought DC Comics' Justice League of America to life between 1973 and 1986. Like Scooby-Doo, the Super Friends went through many iterations in that time, with no less than 9 different series, each slightly different from the others. So without further ado, the history of the many lives of Super Friends.

Firestorm, despite being one of the most powerful members of the Justice League, is often overlooked and ignored in major storylines. Firestorm has the ability to manipulate molecular structures and his powers are almost limitless, making him a formidable opponent even against Superman. The potential of Firestorm's powers is dependent on the knowledge and scientific expertise of both the character and the writer, making him difficult to write and less recognized among iconic Justice League members.

Alan Scott's debut as the Golden Age Green Lantern laid the foundation for the Green Lantern mythos and established the hero's magical powers. Hal Jordan's introduction as the Silver Age Green Lantern set the standard for the hero and brought a sci-fi feel to the character that still resonates today. Sinestro's shocking betrayal of the Green Lantern Corps' values and his mentorship of Hal Jordan had a profound impact on the Green Lantern's history and shaped his character development.
Few heroes in the DC Universe have a history as large or complex as Green Lantern’s. From nearly the beginning, Green Lantern is a legacy title that’s been passed around by a number of heroes, all of whom share one thing in common: a powerful ring that can bring anything they can imagine to life.
But between the many Green Lanterns of the Dcu, what are some...

‘Superman: Legacy’ is one of the most anticipated superhero movies. The film could mark a new renaissance period for DC Comics, which is having a really bad time at the box office right now. ‘Flash’ failed completely at the box office, being one of the worst box office bombs in Warner Bros.’ history. Meanwhile, ‘Aquaman 2’ has been plagued with major reshoots, and it seems like the movie is just a mess. ‘Blue Beetle,’ which will be released quickly, seems missing in action, as no one really cares about this obscure new superhero. DC, and Marvel, for that matter, need the big names to come forward, and ‘Superman: Legacy’ could be that push that DC needs to make it big once again.

Nearly every time Marvel and DC Comics have crossed over with one another it’s been a major event, but the very first crossover between the two comics titans went almost unnoticed. In three comics published in October 1972 – two tales by Marvel and one by DC – the Justice League, Thor and the Juggernaut all converge during Halloween celebrations in the town of Rutland, Vermont. Not only do the heroes all end up in the same place at the same time, but they all end up running into a group of real-life comic creators.
The trio of stories all take place around the Rutland Halloween Parade, a real parade with a heavy superhero theme that was started in 1960 by comic book fan and writer Tom Fagan. In the 1970s, the annual parade was the setting of a number of comic stories published by DC and Marvel during the month of October.

The Justice League's founding marked the beginning of a new era for the Dcu, uniting the world's greatest heroes and creating an organization greater than the sum of its parts. Meeting the Justice Society and Crime Syndicate showcased the vastness of the multiverse and introduced powerful allies and threats to the League. From revealing secret identities to dealing with betrayals and mind-wiping, the League's history is filled with pivotal moments that tested their bonds and shaped their evolution as a team.
The Justice League is one of the greatest superhero teams in the entire comic book medium. The name alone conjures up the image of a colorful and powerful panoply of modern gods. While many of the League’s members are a force unto themselves, by banding together, they’ve created an organization greater than the sum of its parts.
