Studiocanal Launches Sales on Cedric Klapisch’s Dance-Based Film ‘Rise’ – AFM (Exclusive)

Studiocanal has begun worldwide sales on writer-director Cédric Klapisch’s “Rise” (En corps) at the virtual American Film Market this week.

A story of resilience set in Paris and Brittany, “Rise” traverses the the worlds of classical and contemporary dance with a young woman’s journey from success to rock bottom, and back again.

The cast includes emerging actor and dancer Marion Barbeau, Pio Marmaï (“How I Became a Super Hero”), Denis Podalydès (“Anaïs in Love”), François Civil and Hofesh Shechter (“Send Me an Angel”).

Barbeau plays Elise, who thought she had the perfect life, with an ideal boyfriend and a promising career as a ballet dancer. But it all falls apart the day she catches him cheating on her with her stage backup, and after she suffers an injury on stage, it seems like she might not be able to dance ever again. Exclusive: German-speaking Europe and Switzerland deal for upcoming Martin Provost title.

Ascot Elite has pre-bought all rights for German speaking Europe and Switzerland to writer-director Martin Provost’s (Séraphine) upcoming comedy-drama The Midwife (La Sage Femme), set to star Catherine Deneuve, Catherine Frot and Olivier Gourmet.

Ascot Elite inked the deal with Memento Films International (marking the first collaboration between the two companies), whose anticipated script was among the buzz projects at UniFrance’s Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris last month.

The Midwife tells the story of a passionate midwife named Claire (Frot) who one day, after decades of silence, is unexpectedly called upon by her late father’s ex-lover Beatrice (Deneuve), who informs her of some important news. Claire and Beatrice couldn’t be more different from one another but despite their differences, they slowly but surely grow closer and nothing remains, what it once was.

Workshops on cinematography and film criticism in Delhi
Buddhadev Dasgupta
A Master class on the basics of cinematography will be conducted by cinematographer Sunny Joseph on July 24 in New Delhi. Joseph has been the cinematographer for directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shaji N Karun and Buddhadeb Dasgupta and has won a national award. Another workshop on Film Criticism will be taken by Kaushik Bhowmik, Senior Vice President of Osian Film Festival on July 23.

These workshops are part of a 3-day programme “Cinephilia and Beyond” which will be held from July 22-24 July, 2011 in New Delhi at the Sri Aurobindo Center of Arts and Communication. This programme will include special sessions and film screenings apart from interactive workshops.

The programme will be inaugurated by film maker Buddhadeb Dasgupta, along with a special screening of his latest film Janala (The Window). The inauguration will be preceded by a key note address on Buddhadeb Dasgupta and his films by Sandeep Marwah, MD, Marwah Studios.
