Selected by 20th Century Fox and Tongal from more than 550 pitches in anticipation of the 40th anniversary of Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi horror movie, the official Alien short film Ore can now be watched in its entirety, pitting miners against a Xenomorph in the claustrophobic confines of a tunnel system.

Three additional Alien short films will be released in the coming weeks, with two of them slated to come out on the fourth annual Alien Day on April 26th.

In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of Ridley Scott's Alien, last year Fox and Tongal opened submissions for original pitches set in the Alien universe. Out of more than 550 pitches, six ideas were turned into official short films as part of a new digital anthology series, and you can now watch the second of those six short films, "Specimen," in its blood-curdling entirety.

From IGN: To celebrate Alien's 40th anniversary and in partnership with Tongal, 20th Century Fox is releasing new Alien-universe fan-made short films leading up to Alien Day on April 26th.

Directed by Kelsey Taylor, the synopsis for "Specimen" reads: "It's the night shift in a colony greenhouse, and Julie, a botanist, does her best to contain suspicious soil samples that have triggered her sensitive lab dog.

“Alien” has evolved more than anyone could have imagined when Ridley Scott first introduced the xenomorph in 1979, from sequels and comic books to video games and high-school plays. Its latest mutation comes as part of the sci-fi classic’s 40th anniversary, which 20th Century Fox — a scrappy, up-and-coming studio that recently hit it big when it was acquired by Disney — is celebrating with the release of six short films: “Containment,” “Specimen,” “Night Shift,” “Ore,” “Harvest,” and “Alone.”

These works range in quality and scope, as all such projects do, but have in common a reverence to their otherworldly source material that both helps and hinders their collective effort to expand the “Alien” mythos. Without knowing what, if any, restrictions were placed on the filmmakers by Fox (who selected these six stories from more than 550 pitches), it’s difficult not to be disappointed that more of them don’t endeavor to truly forge new territory.

Recently, 20th Century Fox announced that they are going to release six different short films from up-and-coming filmmakers set within the franchise in honor of its 40th anniversary. Now, as the first of these shorts arrives online, we have a brand new trailer teasing what's to come. It's bloody, intense and everything one could possibly want from the Alien universe.

The trailer itself doesn't give away much in terms of what to expect from each one of these tales on an individual level. Instead, it's just a greatest hits collection of shots from each of the Alien 40th Anniversary shorts that serve to be intriguing and terrifying, while not spoiling the surprise.
