Maniac Madness and Toolbox Terror Join Screambox Roster
Image
Screambox has revealed a brutal roster of horror titles for July, offering fans a blend of classic slashers, international thrillers and an all-new original series. The month kicks off with Uncle Sam, the Independence Day slasher that turns patriotic pageantry into a blood-soaked spectacle. On the eleventh, the service uncages William Lustig’s cult staple Maniac alongside the ’70s video nasty The Toolbox Murders, post-apocalyptic biker romp The New Barbarians, psychedelic vampire shocker Vampyres and two lesser-known gems in Fire and Ice and The Killing Hour.

Mid-month brings Screambox’s first foray into original programming with The Trouble with Tessa, a two-episode premiere on the fifteenth. The series follows a disgraced documentarian who unearths a cache of mysterious tapes and sets out to expose the darkest secrets of a picture-perfect town. Viewers seeking surreal thrills need look no further than The Stendhal Syndrome from giallo maestro Dario Argento, which arrives...

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

Why 90 Day Fiancé Fans Find Loren & Alexei's Spin-Off Boring
Image
Though they are one of the most successful 90 Day Fiancé couples, fans are bored with Loren and Alexei Brovarnik’s spin-off, Loren & Alexei: After The 90 Days. Loren and Alexei were first introduced to viewers during 90 Day Fiancé season 3 and quickly became fan favorites due to their lack of drama. The couple had issues but worked through them and got married in 2015. The couple welcomed their first son, Shai, in 2020, their second son, Noah, in 2021, and their daughter, Ariel, in 2022.

While 90 Day Fiancé's Loren and Alexei Brovarnik clearly live a busy life as new parents to three kids. They have been through many ups and downs since appearing on 90 Day Fiancé season 3, but the couple has learned how to make their sometimes complicated relationship work. Despite having an interesting storyline in the series, it seems Loren and Alexei have lost that momentum.

‘Amityville: Dollhouse’ – 1996 Sequel Offers an Odd Collection of Half-Baked Ideas [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

The last direct-to-video entry before the big budget theatrical remake, Amityville: Dollhouse adopts the same format as the last few films without contributing much new to the mix. By this point, the formula is fixed: take a haunted object that is tangentially tied to the original Long Island house, throw a dysfunctional family into the mix, and whip up a variety of bizarre events. Dollhouse follows this to a tee: it’s not bad, but the film is the least inspired entry to date, with an odd collection of half-baked ideas that don’t really come together to form a cohesive whole.

The film follows a blended family, something that first time director (and prolific Amityville producer) Steve White explains in his...

The Yellow Affair Boards ‘Power of Love’ from ‘Fado’’s Jonas Rothlaender (Exclusive)
Image
Global sales shingle The Yellow Affair has acquired world rights to the modern love story “Power of Love” by German helmer Jonas Rothlaender, whose breakthrough movie “Fado” nabbed a Silver Hugo at Chicago and a German Film Critics’ for best feature debut.

Julia M. Müller and Luisa Leopold are producing for Germany’s StickUp Filmproduktion, in co-production with Misha Jaari and Mark Lwoff of Finland’s Bufo (“The Gravedigger’s Wife”).

The director’s sophomore feature film turns on power dynamics in a couple and the social norms expected of a male/female relationship.

Toplining the feature are Saara Kotkaniemi and Nicola Perot as Saara and Robert, both in their 30s, who set off on an extensive summer holiday in the Finnish archipelago.

Their love is a constant play with gender role clichés, yet behind the unconventional façade, they struggle with their own insecurities. Stuck on the island and influenced by its rough nature,...

Dario Argento’s 7 Best Horror Films, from ‘Suspiria’ to ‘Tenebrae’ to ‘Opera’
Image
It’s a sign of a career well spent when a filmmaker’s body of work is so screamingly impressive that just their name is synonymous with a certain type of cinematic excellence. So, what do you think of when you read the name Dario Argento?

Whether you’re among the writer-director’s legion of horror-loving fans or know Argento’s filmography through a more educational lens, then your mind has probably been inundated with supersaturated reds and blues, nightmarish contortions of cinematography, and more likely than not a splattering or two of prop blood.

If Alfred Hitchcock owned American suspense films, then Argento was the master of Italian-born terror. He cut his teeth as a screenwriter on various titles including the comedy “Pardon, Are You For or Against?” and Spaghetti Western “The Rope and the Colt” in the late ‘60s, before making his director debut with “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage...

Dario Argento’s chilling giallo aesthetic kicks off the summer season at Film at Lincoln Center.

IndieWire exclusively announces “Beware of Dario Argento: A 20-Film Retrospective” hosted by Film at Lincoln Center and Cinecittà. The retrospective rolls out from June 17 through 29, and ushers in the third decade of collaboration between Film at Lincoln Center and Italian state-owned film archive Cinecittà, whose main shareholder is the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Argento’s vast catalog of classic films like “Suspiria” and “Inferno,” both part of the “Three Mothers” trilogy, debut new 4K restorations by Cinecittà. Seventeen films are newly restored. The famed director will be in person for select screenings, introducing films and conducting Q&As. The lineup also will host the North American Premiere of “Dark Glasses,” Argento’s first film in 10 years, distributed by Shudder.

Great White Trailer Turns a Blissful Trip Into Shark Attack Summer
Image
We have a brand new trailer for Great White. Hailing from the folks at Rlje Films and Shudder, this is bringing the shark movie action to the big screen this summer. Dating back to Steven Spielberg's Jaws, shark movies have been a staple of the summer moviegoing season for years. Now, we have a new entry to the subgenre from first-time feature director Martin Wilson, with Katrina Bowden starring. By the looks of it, they've crafted a tense, isolated survival thriller set in the middle of the ocean with sharks aplenty.

A Great White poster previewing the shark action to come had previously been released. But this trailer gives us a far better idea of what to expect from the movie. The trailer doesn't waste much time in getting to the point, as we open with a shot of someone being ripped under the water, presumably by a hungry shark,...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Casts Dominic Sherwood, Five More
Shadowhunters may have come to a bittersweet conclusion, but another one of its actors had landed a new TV role.

Dominic Sherwood, who played Jace on the recently canceled Freeform drama, has joined the cast of Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

He is one of six new additions, joining the series alongside Adam Rodriguez, Michael Gladis, Lorenza Izzo, Thomas Kretschman, and Ethan Peck.

The new series is set in 1938 Los Angeles, and focuses on Det. Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto), who becomes embroiled in an epic story following a murder that shocks the city.

It quickly paves the way for Tiago and his family “grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart,” according to the official logline.

Michael Gladis, Adam Rodriguez, Ethan Peck Among Six Cast in Showtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful’ Follow Up
Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer, and Daniel Zovatto in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” is rounding out its cast with the addition of six new actors.

Michael Gladis has joined the show as a series regular, while Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, and Dominic Sherwood will appear in recurring roles. Ethan Peck will guest star in multiple episodes. The six join previously announced cast members Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Adriana Barraza, Rory Kinnear, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves, Nathan Lane, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, and Lin Shaye.

Described as a spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful,” the new series opens in 1938 Los Angeles. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) is embroiled in a story that reflects the history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Opera’
Doppelgänger Releasing teams up with Scorpion Releasing (and Code Red, in some fashion – more on that below) to release the standard Blu-Ray release (again, more on that below) of Dario Argento’s Opera. This is the first of out of the three films Doppelgänger & Scorpion will be putting out in the next couple of months for Argento and Soavi fans, with Soavi’s The Sect & The Church to follow, so let’s take a look at this release.

The Movie

Depending on who you talk to, Opera is often considered director Dario Argento’s “swan song”. Other films that may be considered his “swan song” could be Trauma or The Stendhal Syndrome but for me, I feel Opera is Argento’s last grandiose film with some great set pieces.

When a famed opera singer of a new, ambitious production of Verdi’s Macbeth is involved in an accident that requires...

Greatest Scream Queens
Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People.
