Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith gave their kids names that are clever mirror versions of their own—Willow, after Will, and Jaden, after Jada. And surprisingly, the internet is only now catching on.

Fans online have been reacting with a mix of surprise and embarrassment (via Hola). One tweet said, “They named their daughter after him and their son after her. I realised this shortly after Willow whipped her hair back and forth, but figured I was the last to the party.

An integral part of the Black sitcom boom of the 1990s, "Living Single" remains a timeless series among the rest. There are so many qualities about the show that makes it great television: satisfying growth for characters (even the supporting ones), sharp comedic writing; thoughtful episodes addressing workplace racism, sexism, homosexuality, and mental health; the portrayal of chosen family as a legitimate network of support. "Living Single" is like "Sex and the City" if it had a sitcom, network TV format.

Daniel Williams, the former drummer of the band The Devil Wears Prada, and Dave Shapiro, the owner of Sound Talent Group, were among those killed in a plane crash in San Diego early Thursday morning.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the total number of fatalities is unknown at this point, but there were six people on board the private jet, the Associated Press reported. Sound Talent Group confirmed three employees died, including Shapiro, 42, but didn’t share the other victims’ names.

“We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends,” Shapiro’s agency shared in a statement to Billboard. “Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted by today’s tragedy. Thank you so much for respecting their privacy at this time.”

Following his time at the Agency Group and United Talent Agency, Shapiro went on to launch Sound Talent Group in 2018 with Tim Borror and Matt Andersen.

New Line Cinema “Set It Off” (1996)

If you’ve seen GloRilla and Latto‘s latest collab, you might be in the mood to revisit the 1990s gem “Set It Off.” And if you’ve never seen it before, now’s the perfect time to rectify that.

The writers of the HBO comedy Insecure, Issa Rae and Syreeta Singleton, have announced that they’ve been developing a remake of F. Gary Gray’s heist film Set It Off back in 2019. Little news has been revealed since then and both have gone on to other projects. Notably, Singleton is recently coming off of the comedy, One of Them Days, which our own Tyler Nichol enjoyed as he said in his review, “I tend to be a tough sell when it comes to comedy and One of Them Days managed to really tickle my funny bone. The laughs per minute were high, with several subtle jokes that are easy to miss. It does what any great comedy does: blend comedy with emotional stakes for a fun time.”

As Syreeta Singleton continues a successful theatrical run for her comedy two-hander “One of Them Days,” she gave TheWrap an update on her upcoming reboot of the 1996 crime-action film “Set It Off.”

“It’s going to be a good one. It’s something that we were very careful about, because it’s ‘Set It Off,’ and we want to make sure we do it right. I feel like it’s a story that people are going to be really, really excited about,” Singleton explained. “We’ve infused a lot of humor into it in an organic way. But it was like, when you get four Black women together, how you not gon’ laugh? Even in the middle of robbing some s–t.”

The song is featured on GloRilla‘s debut album Glorious, which was released back in October 2024.

The new music video, directed by Benny Boom, is inspired by the ’90s movie Set It Off.

In the video, “Big Glo and Big Mama team up and orchestrate a bank robbery. By teaming up with the security guards at the bank, Glo and Latto earn the biggest payday of their lives until the Memphis superstar wakes up with a call from her mother, Set It Off star Vivica Fox, and realizes it was all a dream.”

Exclusive: Producer and promoter Je’Caryous Johnson, best known for stage productions of seminal Black films like New Jack City and Set It Off, is launching a film studio.

Je’Caryous Johnson Studios will primarily focus on Black stories and produce projects at a range of budgets in various genres and mediums.

The studio’s first project will be the narrative feature The Paralegal. The film is written and directed by Johnson in his feature film debut. The film follows a lawyer who finds himself being blackmailed by a deranged paralegal determined to take everything he has—except his wife. We’re told production will begin in March.

The 2015 movie about the notorious hip-hop group, N.W.A., brought their incredible true story to the big screen and the dramatic biopic left many wondering how accurate is Straight Outta Compton. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the director behind films like Friday, The Negotiator, and Set It Off, the film shows the origins of N.W.A. while diving into the personal lives of Eazy-e, Dr. Dre, Mc Ren, DJ Yella, and rapper turned actor Ice Cube. Like most biopics, Straight Outta Compton mixes facts with fiction to create a more cinematic experience.

Horace Ové’s masterpiece “Pressure” is getting the spotlight treatment courtesy of Janus Films and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam).

“Pressure” will screen for two weeks as part of the museum’s ode to Black British cinema. The program, titled “Uncharted Territories: Black Britain on Film, 1963-1986” will take place from May 3 through 7, leading up to the new 4K restoration of “Pressure,” widely regarded as the first Black British narrative feature film.

“Uncharted Territories” features rarely screened work from filmmakers of African and Caribbean heritage based in Britain. The series includes “Burning an Illusion,” directed by Menelik Shabazz (1981), John Akomfrah’s “Handsworth Songs” (1986), “Territories” directed by Isaac Julien (1984), and more. The festival is programmed by Ashley Clark.

Screenings of “Pressure” begin May 10 and will continue through May 23. Herbert Norville, Oscar James, and Frank Singuineau star in the feature that follows a London-born teen (Norville), who is the son of Trinidadian parents.

This year’s lineup of films screening at Bam in downtown Brooklyn (April 11 – 15) includes a 4K restoration of Rose Troche’s lesbian classic “Go Fish,” the world premiere of the 4K restoration of Brian Sloan’s queer romantic comedy “I Think I Do,” 35mm screenings of Gus Van Sant’s “My Own Private Idaho” and F. Gary Gray’s “Set It Off.” The “Go Fish” screening will be accompanied by a Q&a with Rose Troche in person along with star Guinevere Turner.

The repertory series was created by NewFest, co-curated by NewFest’s Nick McCarthy (director of programming) and Kim Garcia (technical director and programmer), and is presented in partnership with Bam.
