5 Reasons Why The Supergirl Movie Could Be Better Than Superman
Image
She came, she stumbled, she conquered. Brief as it is, Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, arguably has the best cameo in James Gunn's "Superman." It's also the perfect way to tee up the character's solo DC Universe movie, which is heading our way in 2026. Indeed, audiences probably weren't expecting Alcock's Girl of Steel to show up in Gunn's film the way she does, and it's absolutely brilliant. In fact, based on that scene alone, this daring writer feels brave enough to say that "Supergirl" is not only shaping up to match the quality of Gunn's big blue blockbuster, but it's plausible Kara may yet outdo her Kryptonian cousin's first big-screen outing in the Dcu.

Compared to Kal-El, a fella more powerful than a locomotive and sweet enough to rescue a squirrel in the middle of a city-shattering battle, does Alcock's cape-wearing alter-ego have what it takes...

Creepy Official Trailer for 'The Strangers - Chapter 2' Horror Sequel
Image
"Who are they? Why are they doing this?" "Does there have to be a why...?" Lionsgate has revealed the full official trailer for the next sequel in the current The Strangers horror trilogy, all three of them directed by Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin. The Strangers - Chapter 2 is "the chilling next chapter of The Strangers franchise" which began (as a complete restart) in the summer of 2024 earlier this year with The Strangers - Chapter 1 (trailer here). It's not really a prequel or a sequel, it's a re-imagining of this masked killers horror franchise. The Strangers are back – more brutal and relentless than ever. When they learn that one of their victims, Maya, is still alive, they return to finish what they’ve started. With nowhere to run and no one to trust, Maya must survive yet another horrific chapter of terror as the trio of The Strangers – driven by a senseless,...

Unraveling the Sinclairs: Exclusive Access to the Adults of We Were Liars
Image
E. Lockhart’s bestselling novel, We Were Liars, has captivated readers for years, but it found a second life thanks to TikTok, where tearful reaction videos and ending theories propelled the story into viral territory.

Now, the haunting family drama makes its way to television, reimagined by executive producers Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and Carina Adly MacKenzie, who bring their signature emotional depth and visual style to the screen.

Set on the fictional private island of Beechwood, We Were Liars centers on the powerful Sinclair family.

(TV Fanatic)

The Sinclairs are a clan of blondes who summer by the ocean, protect their legacy at all costs, and rarely speak about the pain that simmers beneath the surface.

The story unfolds across two pivotal summers: one that binds the younger generation together in friendship and love, and another that pulls everything apart.

In this exclusive preview, we’re turning the...

Renny Harlin at an event for L'Exorciste : Au commencement (2004)
Black Tides: John Travolta will try to survive orca attacks in Renny Harlin’s upcoming killer whale movie
Renny Harlin at an event for L'Exorciste : Au commencement (2004)
Renny Harlin amped up the shark attack genre with the medically altered Great Whites in Deep Blue Sea. Now, the veteran action director behind such films as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger and the immensely underrated The Long Kiss Goodnight, will be returning to killer oceanic creatures with killer whales in the survival thriller Black Tides. Deadline reports on the project that is now set to star John Travolta. The creature feature is written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and Ángel Agudo (Prime Video’s Apocalypse Z) and will be produced by Adrián Guerra and Nuria Valls’s Nostromo Pictures (Buried).

The film will tell the story of Rebecca, who reunites with her estranged father, Bill, in sunny Málaga expecting a healing family trip with her young son, Sebastian. Instead, their voyage across the Strait of Gibraltar becomes a nightmare as they’re relentlessly attacked by rogue orcas. Rebecca, confronting deep emotional wounds,...

Time is running out to catch these 3 terrific movies on Netflix
Image
Netflix giveth, and Netflix taketh away. For every film, there is a season - and those can creep up on you pretty quickly when it comes to streaming services.

Netflix is constantly adding new content to its servers, as you know. As I'm currently shelling out $38.55 every month, I feel that Netflix could afford to add a few thousand terabytes of storage just from my payment.

Yet here we are, losing great content just as fast as we get the new stuff. Listen, if it means getting a new Knives Out flick, I'll gladly give up The Ridiculous 6. But no, that abomination will likely be the last thing ever streamed by the robots and the lizard people when our sun becomes a red giant and utterly consumes the planet. But the good stuff, that's the stuff we lose. The clock is ticking on three of the best movies that may...

Novocaine Is More Proof That Horror Filmmakers Make Great, Brutal Action Movies
Image
Ask any stunt person, and they'll tell you: the ability to sell taking a punch is just as important, and perhaps more so, than credibly throwing one. Ask any editor or sound designer, and they'll corroborate this and then some. If you've ever watched raw dailies from an action movie, you'll note how oddly weightless a lot of fight sequences become when they're robbed of their rhythm and the satisfying Thwam sound of their body blows. All this is to say that action in cinema is so incredibly dependent on selling the total effect of the violence, even more than show-stopping stunts and feats of strength and dexterity. Since it's all in the timing, it's no wonder that so many great action directors either come from or are adept at comedy -- from Buster Keaton to Jackie Chan.

However, there are just as many great action filmmakers who come from the world of horror,...

‘Demon City’ Netflix Review: Fabulously Gory Action Fuels This Otherwise Generic Revenge Flick
Image
Ever since the release of John Wick, every story about an individual with a violent past resuming their old ways in order to do some good has been labeled as a rip-off of the Keanu Reeves-led action film. But the fact of the matter is that this particular plotline is as old as movies themselves. Akira Kurosawa used this trope in Seven Samurai all the way back in 1954. Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name is a recognizable figure in this action subgenre, and that character began his journey on the silver screen in 1964. In the ‘90s, we got The Long Kiss Goodnight. David Cronenberg gave us his own take on this kind of story with A History of Violence in 2005. If you dip your toes into Tamil and Telugu films and their Bollywood remakes, almost every project with an aging star has that same old narrative. I don...

Subhash K Jha Revisits Salman-Sushmita’s Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge
Image
Subhash K Jha takes a look, once again, at the Salman Khan-Sushmita Sen film, Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge, which also feature Dis Mirza, released in theatre 23 years ago.

What kind of a filmmaker would sign the stunning Sushmita Sen and keep her out of the narration till past intermission? Perhaps a death wish commands the filmmakers to indulge in the most absurdly self-defeating exercises.

The film’s protagonist, Vir (Salman Khan), is forced by his boisterous father to drink a jug of milk with egg yolk and jog all over a village. Vir’s father (Sharat Saxena) is a Thakur, supposedly in a village in Uttar Pradesh. He makes stupid statements like, “Thakurs aren’t supposed to use their brains. They get a headache if they do.”

The same could be said of filmmakers who make such preposterously illogical films in the hope of selling absurdity as a novelty to the audience.

The Predator (2018) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Horror Action Movie?
Image
A Predator movie directed by Shane Black, written by him and the director of The Monster Squad. This sounded like the recipe for an awesome sci-fi action horror film, but what Black delivered was one of the least popular films in the Predator franchise, with a third act that was completely different from what was originally written and a variety of bad ideas being filmed as potential endings. Critics were unimpressed. Fans were disappointed. And now, we’re going to dig into what happened to The Predator.

1987 was a huge year for Shane Black. His original screenplay Lethal Weapon was turned into an action classic by director Richard Donner. His friend, director Fred Dekker, brought their script for the creature feature The Monster Squad to the screen, creating a film that is now considered to be a cult classic. And he was cast alongside the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers,...

The Long Kiss Goodnight is getting a new 4K Blu-ray release from Arrow Video
Image
The massively underrated Renny Harlin/Shane Black action film with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson is getting a well-deserved upgrade. The Long Kiss Goodnight is also a notable movie that Samuel L. Jackson says he would love to do a sequel for. However, as fun as it is, the Christmas action film can always stand strongly on its own without the concern of a follow-up that misguidedly taints it. However, hopefully the film will find a new audience as Blu-ray.com is now reporting that The Long Kiss Goodnight is getting a 4K Ultra-hd release, courtesy of Arrow Video. And if you’re a fan of the film, it’s Christmas time for you, because you’re getting all the goodies to come with it.

The description reads,

“From screenwriter Shane Black and director Renny Harlin comes ass-kicking action thriller The Long Kiss Goodnight.

“Steven, I’m Not Doing So Well”: How Steven Spielberg Helped Ke Huy Quan Avoid A Post-Oscar Slump & Score His First Lead Role
Image
Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan reveals that Steven Spielberg helped him to avoid a post-Oscar slump, and secure the first leading role of his career. Quan made his movie debut in Spielberg's 1984 action-adventure sequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where he played the role of Short Round opposite Harrison Ford and Kate Capshaw. A year later, he would work with the acclaimed director again, this time playing the part of Data in coming-of-age classic The Goonies. After struggling to find work in Hollywood as an adult, Quan quit acting in 2002, and moved behind the camera.

Following the success of John M. Chu's 2018 romantic-comedy Crazy Rich Asians, Quan was inspired to return to acting. He first scored a supporting role in the Netflix movie Finding 'Ohana, before securing a starring role in the absurdist comedy-drama Everything Everywhere all At Once. A critical and commercial success, the film earned...

What Happened to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?
Image
If you were a young writer with dreams of making it big in Hollywood, you couldn’t have a much better origin story than Shane Black. Just out of film school in his early 20s, Black famously sold his spec script Lethal Weapon to producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros., nabbing over $200 thousand for his work. Lethal Weapon was a significant hit in 1987, effectively putting Black on the map; combine that with the fact he also co-wrote The Monster Squad and starred in and script-doctored Predator that same year and you have a very nice start to a career.

In the 90s, Black became famous—or infamous—for two blockbuster screenplay sales. The Last Boy Scout sold for a record $1.75 million, a record at the time. A couple of years later, his script for The Long Kiss Goodnight made history when he got paid a whopping $4 million for it, still...

Gerard Butler's Underrated 2018 Crime Thriller Lands On Max's Top Charts Ahead Of Its Sequel
Image
The holidays are upon us, so you'd expect the major streaming services' top titles to be yuletide classics that the whole family can enjoy. This is hilariously not the case, however, and it's either a sign of broadening tastes or coarsening sensibilities.

I'm not going to take issue with viewers getting into the Christmas spirit by watching such violent delights as "Die Hard," "Silent Night, Deadly Night" or any of the Shane Black classics set around the holiday. I might just plop down and run a marathon of "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout," "The Long Kiss Goodnight," and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" myself on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is when you bust out "It's a Wonderful Life" (a remarkably dark movie itself) or any one of the adaptations of "A Christmas Carol."

But if FlixPatrol's report on the most popular movies currently streaming on Max is to be believed,...

$160M Angelina Jolie Movie Banned in China Because It “Damaged” Their Reputation
Image
Michelle Yeoh arrived in the industry from Hong Kong action movie scene to revolutionize the genre. But Angelina Jolie was the first white female action movie star born and bred in Hollywood who influenced the genre before the term ever gained popularity.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) [Credit: Paramount Pictures, Toho Co. Ltd.]

Rather than be pigeonholed into female-oriented dramas and family roles, she rose to the occasion to become accepted into a rank that was specifically designed for the opposite sex. However, the start that Jolie got through films like the Tomb Raider franchise did more harm than good to the video game franchise.

Samuel L. Jackson Reuniting With Director Renny Harlin for Action Thriller
Image
Renny Harlin was once the heir apparent to the coke-soaked '80s action empire built by John McTiernan, Joel Silver, and Shane Black. So the news of the Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2 director returning to high-octane cinema with The Beast is exciting for action fans who grew up with his follow-the-fun approach to filmmaking.

The Beast also reunites Harlin with Samuel L. Jackson, who he directed in the proto-shark-sploitation film Deep Blue Sea and the truly GOATed Christmas movie The Long Kiss Goodnight. The film's roster also includes Suicide Squad standout Joel Kinnaman and Guy Burnet of Oppenheimer. Harlin spoke to Deadline saying:

Sam is not just one of those screen icons, but also a dear friend, and joining forces for another action extravaganza has me inspired beyond belief. Joel Kinnaman is another magnetic talent and a good friend as well. Once in a while a new writer with...

‘Don’t Move’ Netflix Review: A Commentary On Women’s Autonomy With A Catatonic Female Protagonist
Image
For the longest time, movies featured men avenging women who were victims of crimes committed by men. As the times changed and that trope waned in terms of popularity, women finally got to avenge themselves on the big screen. But there was a small, teeny-weeny issue: stories about women were still being written by men. So, even though we started getting female-led action thrillers, due to the inequality of opportunities in the entertainment business, the extent of the awesomeness of women was still limited by the imagination of men. There were exceptions in the form of The Bride Wore Black, Kill Bill, Gone Girl, Audition, The Long Kiss Goodnight, La Llorona, The Invisible Man, and Saani Kaayidham. But you’ve to admit that women telling stories about women dismantling the patriarchal system with some righteous violence, like Revenge, Violation, and Jennifer’s Body, were a cut above the rest. Don’t Move...

It was shot simultaneously with the first & third chapters between May and October 2022 in Slovakia. Director Renny Harlin has explained that these next two movies in The Strangers reboot trilogy will "go in completely different directions...

Samuel L. Jackson is Still Angry How 1 Sandra Bullock Movie Robbed His Oscar: ‘The whole f—king set was in tears’
Image
When it comes to accolades and acting, few actors can compete with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson. He has made a name for himself as one of the most iconic figures in the industry, having a distinctive presence on screen, as well as in real life. Despite this, the actor has yet to receive an Academy Award for one of his performances. For years, he has been a part of several Oscar-winning and nominated films.

Even though he was a fundamental part of most of these projects, the only nomination he has received is for his role in Pulp Fiction. What makes the matter all the more odd is that despite only one Oscar nomination to show for his career, the actor received an Honorary Academy Award. It is safe to say that fact...

10 Gritty Action Movies From The 1990s That Are Worth Rewatching
Image
Some gritty action films from the 1990s are worth revisiting as many of them have slowly begun to slip from the minds of the general public in recent years. The '90s introduced some of the most influential action films, like Total Recall, Heat, and The Matrix. Such films have taken over pop culture discussions, leaving gritty action films like Crimson Tide and New Jack City to take the back seat.

Gritty action films from the decade show a darker side to criminal activity, such as drug trading and arson. Some films like Desperado have a comedic approach to the dark material, while films like New Jack City aim to incorporate social commentary into their narrative. Though they were moderate successes at the time of their release and weren't torn apart by critics, certain '90s action films aren't as heavily discussed and merit a rewatch.

Samuel L. Jackson's 1996 Thriller Originally Killed Off His Character: "Audience Was Like F--k No"
Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson in Au revoir à jamais (1996)
The Long Kiss Goodnight originally killed off Samuel L. Jackson's character, but the "audience was like f--k no." Directed by Renny Harlin and written by Shane Black, the 1996 action thriller follows an amnesiac schoolteacher and single mother who, with the help of a private detective, sets out to find her true identity and discovers a dark conspiracy. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, the cast also includes Geena Davis, Tom Amandes, Yvonne Zima, Brian Cox, Patrick Malahide, Craig Bierko, and David Morse.

Appearing on GQ's series in which actors break their most iconic characters, Samuel L. Jackson remembered how The Long Kiss Goodnight originally killed off his character, but the "audience was like f--k no." Watch the portion of the video below, starting at the 15:50 minute mark:

Samuel L. Jackson and Geena Davis' Overlooked Action Movie Just Hit Paramount+
Image
Geena Davis has a bone to pick with very bad men in The Long Kiss Goodnight. Lucky for them, she's even badder. Directed by her then-husband, Renny Harlin, the film co-stars Samuel L. Jackson as the comic relief and Davis's right-hand man. With its blend of action, comedy, romance, and thrills, The Long Kiss Goodnight is a quirky, one-of-a-kind film. Too clever for its own good, it's gone on to become a cult classic thanks to its progressive female lead action hero, and odd humor mostly delivered through one-liners from Jackson.

Mindhunters (2004) – What Happened to This Movie?
Image
It’s not often I’d be talking about Agatha Christie, Renny Harlin, Val Kimer and LL Cool J in the same breath, but thanks to the world of Tinseltown magic, here we are! And, before you’re mis-led into thinking this video is about the great Netflix show of the same name, let me just set the record straight. This ain’t that one folks. Nope, the movie we’re focusing on today somehow manages to blend the classic British literary world of Agatha Christie with LL Cool J spitting out lines like. That’s right gore-hounds, twenty years ago director Renny Harlin was best known for action classics, pirate movies, dangling Sylvester Stallone from great heights and giant sharks; way before the likes of The Meg and more recently, Under Paris. Then, an intriguing project came his way that would blend the worlds of Agatha Christie and gangster rappers,...

This Hilarious & Thrilling Creature Feature Remains a Cult Classic 25 Years Later
Image
Deep Blue Sea balances cheese and intensity, creating a memorable creature feature with unique shark villains. Samuel L. Jackson's shocking death scene in the film takes risks, adding to the suspense and tension of the story. The twist ending of Deep Blue Sea defies horror tropes, making it a standout in the shark movie genre.

Director Renny Harlin had a few successes and some major bombs throughout his career in the '80s and '90s but achieved moderate recognition for Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea, both featuring Samuel L. Jackson. In modern cinema, he's best remembered for the latter, which only received mixed reviews upon its release but has succeeded in being one of the most beloved creature features starring the ultimate predators of the ocean. The movie is both a cheesy sci-fi featuring a villain with some unrealistic but interesting abilities and a turn-of-the-century horror...

Channing Tatum’s private island getaway becomes an isle of memory loss and murder in the latest Blink Twice trailer
Channing Tatum
We could all use a vacation. Wouldn’t it be nice to kick back, tuck into a good book, sip alcohol from a coconut, and dine on portions of fancy food a bird would say is minuscule? Luckily, Slater King (Channing Tatum) wants us to join him on his private island for a well-deserved rest. It’s a getaway where phones are discouraged, naps in the sun are mandatory, and memory loss is one of the paradise’s many amenities. Wait, what? Unfortunately, people who visit Slater’s island tend to lose themselves, and nothing is what it seems. In the latest Blink Twice trailer, Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut welcomes audiences to a dystopia as deadly as it is picturesque.

Here’s the official synopsis for Blink Twice courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery:

When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala,...

Deep Blue Sea, The Second-Best Shark Movie Ever, Was Just A Modest Box Office Hit
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"Scary, absurd, inessential." That's how critic David Denby described director Renny Harlin's 1999 shark movie "Deep Blue Sea" in his review for The New Yorker. I think it's fair to say that history agrees with his first two points. That third point, however? That one has been challenged greatly as the film was a success in its day and has gained a much larger following in the years since its theatrical run. It's now a franchise with two direct-to-video sequels. More than that, one could easily make the argument that it's the second-best shark movie ever made, only behind Steven Spielgerg's all-time blockbuster classic "Jaws."

Spielberg didn't invent the shark movie with "Jaws," but there was very much a dividing line between...

Blink Twice poster puts a Polaroid camera in the hands of a creepy Channing Tatum

Amazon MGM will be giving the thriller Pussy Island a global theatrical release on August 23rd – but, to the shock and surprise of no one, they also changed the title, dropping the Pussy and renaming the film Blink Twice. With the release date just a couple months away, a poster for Blink Twice has arrived online, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

The feature directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz, who played Catwoman in The Batman, the film will follow Frida, a young, clever, Los Angeles cocktail waitress who has her eyes set on the prize: philanthropist and tech mogul Slater King. When she skillfully maneuvers her way into King’s inner circle and ultimately an intimate gathering on his private island, she is ready for a journey of a lifetime. Despite the epic setting, beautiful people, ever-flowing champagne and late-night dance parties, Frida can...

“They were envious because of the money”: Iron Man Director Became a Pariah After His Record-Breaking Script Failed at the Box Office Despite Starring Samuel L. Jackson
Image
Filmmaker Shane Black is known for directing the MCU film Iron Man 3 as well as black comedies such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys. The director shot to fame as a writer, creating the Lethal Weapon franchise and also writing the Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer Last Action Hero. He also played a role in the star’s action film Predator.

One of Black’s most expensive sales was the screenplay of the Samuel L. Jackson starrer The Long Kiss Goodnight. The film also starred Geena Davis and Brian Cox and the screenplay reportedly sold for $4 million at the time. However, the failure of the film at the box office reportedly made Shane Black a Hollywood pariah.

“I got the hint at that point”: Unlike Taylor Sheridan, Iron Man Director Found Out His True Calling After Believing Himself to be an Actor
Image
Iron Man 3 director Shane Black initially pursued an acting career before he became a renowned screenwriter and director in Hollywood, just like Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan. Before he directed the fourth movie in The Predator series, little did fans know that he had an acting role in the first movie alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was during this time that he sold the script for the classic buddy cop movie Lethal Weapon.

It took little time for Black to get the hint from his acting and screenwriting gigs that he was not suited for the former career. Black doubled down on his screenwriting works and became one of the highest-paid screenwriters at the time.

Renny Harlins 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Harlin's diverse career spans comedy, horror, and action, with hits like Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea. Cutthroat Island, a box office flop, still has its moments with grand set pieces and a standout score by John Debney. Films like The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea showcase Harlin's ability to blend action with heart and high-stakes thrills.

Known best for his action films, Finnish director Renny Harlin has some underappreciated films in his career that highlight his penchant as a director. Harlin's breakthrough in Hollywood came after directing the fourth installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. The slasher film cemented a few signature traits of Harlin's that would continue to appear in his future work, namely his ability to direct a feature that leaves audiences with a fun time, regardless of flaws found within the film's writing.

Deep Blue Sea's Legendary Death Scene Was Almost Spoiled In The Trailer – And The Director Fought Back [Exclusive]
Image
Do you remember where you were 25 years ago when Samuel L. Jackson's character in "Deep Blue Sea" was shockingly eaten by a shark in the middle of his impassioned speech? I unfortunately didn't see it in theaters, but when I rented the DVD from Blockbuster, I remember practically leaping off my couch when that big moment happened. It's one of the most surprising movie moments of the past 30 years -- and not only was that jaw-dropping plot beat not in the original script, but once it made its way into the movie, Warner Bros. wanted to use it in the trailers. Thankfully, director Renny Harlin put his foot down and won that fight against the studio.

Timed to the release of his new film, "The Strangers: Chapter 1," we spoke with Harlin in a career-spanning interview, and naturally, we had to ask about the big "Deep Blue Sea" death, the most memorable imagery from his chaotic,...

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Looked for Maximum Terror in a 10th of a Second
Image
In 1988, director Renny Harlin made a big splash in Hollywood when he directed “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,” which at that point was the highest-grossing film in the “Elm Street” series — and would remain so until “Freddy vs. Jason” in 2003. Two years later, Harlin had an even bigger hit with “Die Hard 2,” a movie that several critics at the time considered to be artistically superior to its predecessor. Now Harlin, whose credits also include “Cliffhanger,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” and “Deep Blue Sea,” returns to the world of sequels with “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” a sequel to Bryan Bertino’s ultra-creepy 2008 horror film about a brutal home invasion. As with his previous sequels, Harlin has both delivered the satisfactions of his source material and gone in his own new directions, in the process creating the most frightening thriller of 2024 so far.

The director’s overall...

First reactions say The Strangers: Chapter 1 is tense setup for trilogy
Image
The third movie in The Strangers series, the appropriately subtitled prequel Chapter 1, had its Los Angeles premiere earlier this week, and based off of the initial reactions, it’s looking like a solid homage to the 2008 original and a way to establish the rest of the trilogy.

Our own Tyler Nichols was at the premiere for the movie, where he also chatted with director Renny Harlin and some of the movie’s stars. As for his thoughts: “The Stranger: Chapter 1 is sure to be divisive as it feels like a soft reboot of the original with a more slashery approach, but its usage of tension is what elevates it. Petsch is a great final girl and I can’t wait to see what is to come.”

The Strangers Trilogy: Renny Harlin is planning a 4.5 hour mega-cut
Image
Like many of you, I was scratching my head when I learned that director Renny Harlin would be making not one, not two, but three movies based on the horror cult classic The Strangers. While a pretty slick horror flick, the original spawned a modest follow-up that didn’t get a ton of buzz. When it came out, I figured it was a series that had run its course. It seems this is not so, with Lionsgate releasing a widely ambitious trilogy of horror films this year (it’s like the horror version of Kevin Costner’s Horizon).

Notably, it marks the return of director Renny Harlin to the horror genre. Now mostly known for his action films, such as the classics Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more – horror was where he made his original reputation. Prison, which gave Viggo Mortensen his first leading role,...

Killer Queens, Keanu Reeves & B-Movie Classics on IMAX! Bristol’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival marks another explosive line-up for 2024
Image
From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.

Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.

For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...
