If you have never heard about the Luxembourg City Film Festival before, it may surprise you to know that the biggest annual film event in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which is surrounded by France, Germany and Belgium, is turning 15 this year.
Long considered a hidden gem on the global fest circuit, the event has steadily gained in stature, routinely attracting big industry names to a country with a population of only around 670,000. Just take last year as an example, when the fest set an attendance record with a 10 percent increase to 19,962. For its 2024, LuxFilmFest, it attracted the likes of Viggo Mortensen, Chinese director Wang Bing, Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako, French director Gaspar Noé — who hosted a retrospective and a masterclass — and a jury that included Luxembourg star Vicky Krieps, German actor Sebastian Koch, and U.S. director Ira Sachs.

Last year we got Metrograph Pictures jumping into the indie film distribution scene, and in 2025 we have 1-2 Special with topper Jason Hellerstein officially cutting the ribbon landing their first pick-up and it was one of the better films from this year’s Berlinale in Radu Jude‘s Kontinental ’25. Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, Jude is in Hong Sang-soo mode — pretty much on a film per year pace since the beginning of the decade. Our Nicholas Bell called ★★★½ Jude’s “latest perambulating spasm from Romanian director Radu Jude, which navigates an intersection of self-accountability, property, language, and culture as precarious notions in a nation bulldozing itself into capitalism’s future.”…...

Julian Lennon had such high hopes when he released his latest record, ‘Jude,’ that it hurt so much when he was brought back to earth by minimal fan reception.
Lennon, 61, who is also the first son of John Lennon and his first wife Cynthia Powell, opened up about how fan disinterest in his album hurt him, especially since he it was his first record in over a decade.
Julian Lennon – On Wanting To Do Late Night Shows If They’d Have Him
The thing that makes us humans is the hope we have for things that haven’t happened yet. You’re starting up a company and you already have big dreams for it, even though, truthfully speaking, it could go either way.
This was true for Julian Lennon, who made his first musical return in over a decade only to discover that fans don’t really care for any new music from him.

There has been a social media war between factions of Maga recently, and Elon Musk weighed in with an odd post. Entertainment Weekly reports that the post on Twitter (currently X) was "part of an ongoing argument among supporters of President-elect Donald Trump about the value of immigration visas." The post was made in support of his argument for H-1B visas, which allow a certain number of skilled overseas workers to be employed in America. "We named @Tesla after Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest engineers ever," wrote Musk. "He was a penniless immigrant whose inventions led to American dominance in electricity generation and usage." However, Musk posted a photo of the actor Nicholas Hoult rather than a photo of the inventor himself.
In the image, Hoult was playing Nikola Tesla in the 2017 film, The Current War. Houlty saw the post and commented, "Clearly a very convincing performance I gave here.

Gwyneth Paltrow had an extended cameo in Steven Soderbergh’s star-studded pandemic thriller Contagion. Released nine years before the global pandemic of 2020, the film surprisingly predicted many of the events of the Covid-19 lockdown, including the source of the coronavirus and the hoarding of resources.
One of the most harrowing scenes of the film was Paltrow’s character undergoing an autopsy as the patient zero to determine the cause of the pandemic. Writer Scott Z. Burns mentioned that the head-sawing scene during the autopsy was included as a homage to a real-life person in New York.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 4Skeleton Crew episode 4 features a dark parallel to the prequel trilogy, one that shows just how horrific the Clone Wars actually were. Arriving on the similar yet war-torn planet of At Achrann, the kids from At Attin encounter two rival clans known as the Troik and the Hattan. To that end, it's hard not to see a key element of the Troik's warriors as an indictment of the Jedi Order.
Previously in Skeleton Crew episode 3, Jude Law's Jod Na Nawood took Wim, Kb, Fern, and Neel to his old contact Khy'mm, an owl-like astronomer who gave them coordinates to a system that could be their lost homeworld of At Attin. To that end, Skeleton Crew episode 4 brings the crew of The Onyx Cinder to At Achrann, another "Jewel of the Old Republic" with its dark parallels to The Clone Wars.

Albus Dumbledore is one of the most iconic characters in the Harry Potter franchise, but the Dumbledore actor changed part way through the movie series. Dumbledore was played by Michael Gambon in six movies and Jude Law in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them spin-offs, but was initially portrayed by Irish actor Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter films. When the role was initially being cast, actors Patrick McGoohan and Sean Connery were targeted for the part. Harris was eventually chosen as Dumbledore and was expected to play the part throughout the entire film franchise.
Harris initially hesitated to take the role due to his health, but the actor was encouraged by his young granddaughter. The actor perfectly embodied the exceptional wizard and Harry's mentor in the franchise's first two installments. But before the release of Chamber of Secrets in November 2002, Harris' health took a turn for the worse.

Kate Winslet wants to sink the feud rumors with James Cameron once and for all.
The Oscar winner told Variety that the discussions surrounding the tough 1997 “Titanic” production “overshadowed” her working relationship with Cameron at the time. The duo later reunited for 2022 film “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
“There’s a part of me that feels almost sad that stupid, speculative ‘Titanic’ stuff at the time overshadowed the actual relationship I have with him,” Winslet said. “He knows I will be up for anything. Any challenge, any piece of direction you give me? I’ll try it.”

In 2022, Kate Winslet went to the London home of director Stephen Frears to discuss HBO’s political satire “The Regime.”
She’d been cast in the role of Elena Vernham, a narcissistic European autocrat, and Frears had been pinpointed by the production as a potential director.
“I was offered a cup of tea, which I then ended up making myself because he clearly had no intention of making the tea for me at all,” Winslet says. “In fact, he didn’t even seem to know where the cups were.” Over the tea and some chocolate biscuits, she asked the director how he believed Elena should be played.
“He said to me, ‘Well, it needs to be quite high,’” Winslet recalls. “And I didn’t have a fucking clue what he meant. And as I walked away, I realized I totally knew. It was his way of saying, ‘Go big or go home.

Jude, an extract from a novel and made as a proof of concept short, doesn’t follow the typical trajectory of a young girl gone missing narrative but instead dives into the crevices of what is left behind and in particular, that empty void where a child once sat, cherished and loved. Seeking a better reality, 14 year old Appalachian local Cindy Stoat cuckoos herself into that hole left by loss and the tragedy is suddenly seen from different eyes. Animals are everywhere in “Ripley.” From the opening flash-forward to the closing montage, the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels finds furry friends in frame after frame. Far from surplus scenery — Steven Zaillian’s elegant vision of ’60s era Italy does not lack for beauty — these creatures are active characters. A grazing sheep finds a clue. A prowling cat produces a lead. A snake eludes detection inside a pair of loafers — and yes, in this case, a reptile is also an animal because the snake in question is Ripley himself: a slippery, second-rate con man with a cold-blooded stare, slicked-back locks, and vice-like grip on his prey. Embodied by Andrew Scott, Ripley follows a familiar pattern yet takes a distinct shape. He’s older, but not wiser; meaner, but more level-headed; greedier, but almost purely so.
This “Ripley” is a different animal.
First introduced in Highsmith’s 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,...

TikToks, a proto-feminist film from socialist Romania, a would-be Uwe Boll movie, and gritty black-and-white 16mm shots of a crowded city all coagulate into (another) grim satire about the the state of current-day Romania—and, inevitably, the state of the world, which, of course, seems to be ending. As we follow Angela (Ilinca Manolache), an overworked film production assistant, the window of her car, much like a cinema screen, gives us a unique vantage point on a cacophonous Bucharest. Swearing in traffic, absurd arguments, work accidents: Jude throws us into a world of society-wide exhaustion, exacerbated by the tribulations of late capitalism. Yet who’s at fault? No one and everyone, all at once. Exploitation further...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet's on-screen chemistry in Titanic is fundamental to the film's success, but they weren't the first choices for the roles. Gwyneth Paltrow turned down the role of Rose in Titanic, jokingly stating that she chose other films with "great characters and stories" instead of a movie about a ship. Despite missing out on Titanic, Paltrow's career remained successful, and she went on to win an Oscar for her lead role in Shakespeare in Love just two years later.
We know an actor has nailed the role perfectly when their performance is deemed "iconic" and forever imprinted in our minds in such a way that we can't possibly picture someone else playing the character. Of course, an occupational hazard in filmmaking, actors do turn down or are rejected from famous roles in Hollywood. In the case of Titanic, James Cameron's original casting choices didn't materialize,...

In 1963, audiences were first invited into the exciting sci-fi world of Doctor Who. Over the years, what started as a simple children's show on the BBC grew into a global phenomenon that attracted fans of all ages. The classic series lasted for 26 years, coming to an end in 1989, after seven different actors had stepped into the Tardis as the Doctor. For a long time, it seemed as though Doctor Who might never return to screens, with the poorly received 1996 TV movie doing little to raise fans' hopes. In 2005, however, the efforts of showrunner Russell T Davies changed everything.
A new series of Doctor Who finally hit screens, radically reinvented by Davies for a modern audience. The revival series made Doctor Who more intense more dramatic than ever before, and the series went on to become more popular than it had ever been. Davies is back at the helm for three...

Netflix's Apostle pulls some things off that great horror movies struggle to. Apostle strikes a balance between occult elements and intense, high-octane action. Apostle understands creative balance in storytelling, avoiding extreme elements seen in other horror films and delivering a satisfying experience.
When it comes to folk horror, many fans are divided. Some of these narratives have tons of nuanced arcs, dissecting religion, the occult and the human condition. Robert Eggers' The Witch is a prime example of this, as well as It Comes at Night. These are two A24 movies that often had viewers wondering if what they were seeing was real or if it was just hallucinations and a psychological breakdown through the perspectives of the main characters.
When that approach is taken, though, there's a risk that some of these horrors won't be that well-balanced. The Relic is another example of this, which does the cerebral haunting vibe well,...

It may be categorised as a “costume drama” but Brazilian-Algerian director Karim Aïnouz has blown away the cobwebs normally associated with such undertakings to turn the examination of the relationship between Henry V111 and his sixth and final wife Catherine Parr into an engrossing tussle with contemporary resonances.
Jude Law as the ailing and paranoid monarch gives one of his best character portrayals in a long time as the tensions mount between him and his spouse (spiritedly evoked by Alicia Vikander as the “firebrand” of the title) in a whirlwind of palace intrigue and conspiracy theories.
It is handsomely mounted and costumed with enough sparks and pace to quicken the interest and heighten the senses as the king returns from fighting overseas severely wounded in his right leg and suffering pain who has to contend with a conniving court of among others Eddie Marsan’s Prince Edward Seymour and heir to the.

Early on in Karim Aïnouz’s richly textured and suspenseful historical drama, Firebrand, King Henry VIII commends his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr, on her excellent job filling in as Regent while he’s been abroad engaged in warfare. Never mind the efforts to limit her powers to inconsequential matters, he tells her she won’t have to worry her “pretty little head” about all that anymore. The threat posed by women who think for themselves to the absolute power of men is a central theme in this starch-free tale of Tudor intrigue, its protofeminist perspective seamlessly woven into the narrative fabric without a hint of the didactic.
Brazilian director Aïnouz has been making hypnotically sensual movies laced with luxuriant melancholy for more than 20 years, among them such beguiling dramas as Madame Satã, The Silver Cliff and the criminally under-appreciated jewel Invisible Life (seriously, check it out, you’ll...

It appears that Neimoidians have returned to a prominent place in the Star Wars franchise via the upcoming Disney+ series The Acolyte. The High Republic-era series will focus on the waning years of the peaceful time period and have a particular focus on the hidden dark side users, with the Sith potentially playing a major role in the show. The Neimoidians were frequently used as pawns by the Sith in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, making their appearance in The Acolyte a potential hint towards the show’s premise.
The Acolyte’s trailer, shown at Star Wars Celebration 2023, includes footage of High Republic-era Jedi and mysterious dark side users, but it also features a Neimoidian character, suggesting a significant role for either a specific Neimoidian or the species writ large. Lucasfilm has finally confirmed who will play Star Wars' Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action. Created by legendary science-fiction author Timothy Zahn, Grand Admiral Thrawn was one of the most compelling villains of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. The only alien to ascend to such a high rank in the Empire, he was useful to Palpatine because of his strategic genius and tactical skill; Zahn modeled the character on Sherlock Holmes, giving him the ability to intuit his opponents' strategies. Although these stories were rendered non-canon (or "Legends") after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, Thrawn made the jump into a new era in Star Wars Rebels and several new canon novels by Zahn. The Mandalorian season 2 set a live-action Thrawn up as the franchise's next major villain.

Mark David Chapman, the man responsible for shooting and killing John Lennon outside his Manhattan apartment, has been denied parole for the 12th time, New York corrections officials said.
Chapman, 67, went before a parole board at the end of August, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said, according to NBC News.
The transcript from the 12th occasion where the killer of the famed Beatle went before the board has not been publicly available, but in previous hearings the 67-year-old had expressed remorse at what he carried out on 8 December 1980.
During his previous hearing in 2020, he described his actions on that day more than 40 years ago as “despicable” and told the board that he would have “no complaint whatsoever” if they opted to keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.

Calling his seventh album Jude was an act of reclamation for Julian Lennon. In a recent interview, the 59-year-old explained that, while 1968 song “Hey, Jude” is “a great chanting song, a favourite Beatles song”, for him it had always been “a harsh reminder of what actually happened in my life, which was that my father [John Lennon] walked out on my mother [Cynthia] and me. That was a truly, truly difficult time.” Paul McCartney wrote the ballad to comfort his bandmate’s six-year-old son (originally calling it “Hey Jules”). John, rather typically, assumed that his bandmate had written it for him, as a blessing on his new relationship with Yoko Ono. No wonder Julian finally changed his birth name – John Charles Julian Lennon – to Julian Charles John in 2020.
Emotional echoes of this complicated public history reverberate through Jude’s solid collection of mature mid-tempo rockers and ballads. Lennon’s lyrics repeatedly circle themes of trust betrayed,...

European Film Awards Head Online
The 33rd European Film Awards have pivoted to a virtual ceremony as the pandemic continues to disrupt international travel plans. Scheduled to take place on December 12 in Reykjavik, the event will now go fully digital for this year, before returning to the Icelandic capital in 2021. Organizers of the European Film Academy said they are working on a concept for a week of additional online-events to involve its partners and members. Nominations for the awards will be announced online on November 10. “The decision was not easy but it was made with responsibility and out of care for our guests. No one is more disappointed than our Icelandic friends and we, at Efa, that we will not be able to come together in Reykjavik this year,” said Efa Chairman Mike Downey.

Descending from the heavens in 2016, The Young Pope was one of the most singularly strange things to hit TV over the last decade. When marketing for Paolo Sorrentino's Vatican-set drama first plastered the sinfully attractive Jude Law front-and-center, the internet drove straight down the "hot Pope who fucks" route. But in Law's Pope Pius Xiii, Sorrentino delivered the unexpected, a Pope that aggressively did not fuck, but instead plunged the Catholic Church into an age of extreme devotion, idolatry, and conservatism. It was also, as glimpsed through Sorrentino's auteristic lense, very weird. Pius …...
