Horror legend Stephen King has written a fair few books over the years. Ever since he burst on the scene with "Carrie" in 1974, he's given fans at least one book nearly every year. Since most of his work has been extremely popular, he's also established himself as a bit of an authority on the horror front -- and isn't shy about commenting about either the genre or his craft as a writer.
Thanks to King's status as a horror luminary and extensive work in many other genres, we've analyzed his work many times before. You may have seen us discuss why King's endings have a reputation for being disappointing, look into his biggest career regret involving (of all things) a forgotten TV commercial, and examine the one Stephen King book that will never get a film adaption due to the author voluntarily scrubbing it from his catalog.

Quick Links West Side Story Brings a New Energy to a Timeless Classic West Side Story Has Some of the Best Acting & Cinematography of Any Spielberg Film Spider-Man: No Way Home's Success May Have Killed West Side Story's Box-Office Run
One of Steven Spielberg’s most passionate projects is one that sadly not many saw while it was in theaters in 2021. As unbelievable as it may sound that Spielberg managed to pull off directing one of the best movie musicals in recent years, his re-imagining of West Side Story proved any doubters of his ability to do so entirely wrong. While it made quite an impression on those who did go out of their way to see it during its initial release and earned high praise from critics, it sadly disappointed at the box office, managing to gross only $76 million against a budget of $100 million. It's quite a shame,...

“We’re in the same business,” pleads the world’s unluckiest Santa impersonator to an armed-and-ready Art the Clown. “We make people happy.”
Comparing job descriptions won’t save Santa or his cherry-red nose and beard of white from what awaits in “Terrifier 3” — but he makes a decent point. Returning for a second sequel in this indie-slasher-turned-runaway-train, star David Howard Thornton reprises his role as Art: a supernatural shepherd of theatrical joy.
Splatter isn’t for everyone and, even Christmas themed, “Terrifier 3” is intense. But if gore, guts, and go-for-broke horror-comedy are on your pre-Halloween wish list, then Damien Leone’s best film will slap a smile on your face so big it might as well be held there with meat hooks.

Prepare to see a lot more of Alan Cumming. Peacock is investing more in “The Traitors” with a Season 4 and 5 pickup, which will see Cumming and his capes return to rule over the Scottish Highlands.
“The Traitors” pits some of the most competitive reality stars against each other in “the ultimate murder mystery game,” a press release for the series reads. Set in an ancient Scottish castle, contestants have to work together on a series of missions to build a prize fund worth up to $250,000. But hidden among the Faithful are the Traitors, contestants whose goal is to eliminate their teammates and take the prize for themselves. Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.
Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.
The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

Filming for Superman: Legacy is in full swing with the latest update teasing an iconic location in the mythology. A preview of the Kent family farm teases a humble homestead as young Clark Kent's home in James Gunn's reboot story.
Clark has found a home in James Gunn's version of Superman. In photos posted on X, Dcu Updates revealed the Kent farm as a sleepy homestead in Lagrange, Georgia. The property barely has any distinguishing features apart from the single-story house, but it's yet to be confirmed if this is Jonathan and Martha Kent's home. The update also shared a casting call ad for boys aged three and six years old and for 6-month-old babies. The auditions will fill roles in a Warner Bros. Feature Film dubbed as project 'Genesis,' which could be code for Superman: Legacy (filming on location starts on Jun. 6).

While the Rotten Tomatoes score for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has fallen, audiences have nevertheless been enjoying the film much more than critics.
After initially debuting just above 60% with its Rotten Tomatoes score, which had just put the film into the "Fresh" status, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has since dropped to a "Rotten" score of 55%. However, the audience score on the review aggregator website is much higher, currently at 92%. This audience score is now the highest of any MonsterVerse movie, getting the record by one point over the film's predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong, which has 76% and 91% scores.

Apples Never Fall features Alison Brie in a dysfunctional family with haunting secrets and a possible murder, far from the lovable found family in Community. The off-screen friendship among the Community cast, especially Alison Brie and Danny Pudi, has been heartwarming and delightful to witness. Brie plays Amy Delaney in Apples Never Fall, a character that wears her wounds on her sleeves and is fighting for self-worth and definition.
Apples Never Fall is Peacock's new star-studded limited series, with Annette Bening and Sam Neill playing the former owners of a tennis academy who haunt the lives of their grown children, played by Jake Lacy, Essie Randles, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and the one and only Alison Brie. The Traitors is making the jump from word-of-mouth hit to quantified success.
The Peacock unscripted series is set to make its first appearance on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of Jan. 15-21. The show had about 384 million minutes of viewing for that week, which encompasses the first four episodes of season two (three debuted on Jan. 12 and the fourth on Jan. 18) as well as any viewing for the first season, as Nielsen counts all episodes of a series in its streaming totals.
Peacock says season two of The Traitors had the biggest debut for any original reality series on the streamer, growing by 75 percent over its first season. The show will be the first unscripted offering from the NBCUniversal platform to hit the Nielsen rankings (complete charts for Jan. 15-21 will be available in mid-February). Cat Power and Iggy Pop have teamed up for a new cover of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero.”
The cover arrives as a single from an upcoming compilation album titled The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, organized by In The Q Records, Bandbox, and the Women of Rock Oral History Project to help raise funds for Faithfull as she “recovers from Long Covid.” Thus, the version of the song that Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Pop have delivered pays homage to Faithfull’s 1979 version of the song, with a driving beat and an ambient sense of tension.
Overtop, Marshall’s multi-tracked vocals carry Lennon’s powerful words, while Pop dips in throughout with spoken word lines, sounding almost like a late-career Leonard Cohen, proclaiming a solemn truth with a low, commanding growl. Listen to the single below.
In a statement, Marshall expressed her excitement to be part of the project.

Today, the band have announced that they’ll release the live album that never was, Give Way, on both CD and vinyl as a Record Store Day 2023 Exclusive.
Give Way was recorded in Australia while Pearl Jam were touring their fifth studio album Yield (geddit?). According to Discogs, the highly sought-after CD was 17 tracks long, including Yield hits like “Do the Evolution”and “Faithful.” The story goes that the day before the Give Way CDs were supposed to hit shelves at Best Buy, Sony recalled and destroyed all but a couple hundred lucky copies of the 50,000 pressed.

Vintage high-end Film Noir from the classic year 1947! Low Mileage too — this long cut hasn’t been seen since the early laserdisc days. I didn’t know it needed restoring until George Feltenstein talked about it a couple of years ago. It’s a domestic noir crossed with Double Indemnity with a little An American Tragedy thrown in for good measure. Normally squeaky-clean Robert Young throws his hat into the ring with the lowest of noir hero-villains: in this one he double-crosses three terrific noir leading ladies. We can now spell ‘Unspeakable Cad’ with the initial Ry. The most amazing thing about The Warner Film Archive’s new disc is that it restores a full fifteen minutes — Eddie Muller screened They Won’t on his Noir City show not long ago, with no mention that it was the short, edited version.

Tucker Beathard has reimagined his recent song “Faithful” as a brooding duet, with singer-guitarist Lindsay Ell joining him in the studio for the collaboration. The track appears in its original solo form on Beathard’s upcoming album King, set for release on August 21st.
Beathard leads off the tune with some slowed-down electric-guitar arpeggios and puts his heart out on his sleeve as he negotiates for fidelity and something long-term. “I say we lay it all out on the table, if you’re willing girl I’m able/Let’s be faithful,...

Todd Rundgren had a loving history with the band that taught him almost everything he knew about music.
Rock Hall of Fame Class of 2019 nominee Todd Rundgren is a musicians' musician who consistently puts art in front of fame. A True Star, which is also the title of his 1973 album, he broke onto the scene with two romantic pop classics, "Hello, It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" off his third album Something/Anything?; explored the intricate maneuverings of prog rock with his band Utopia, and scored one of his most and least recognizable songs just banging on a drum all day. Rundgren never shied from referencing his musical influences, or ripping down his own idols. Ten years after The Beatles proclaimed "All You Need Is Love," Rundgren confirmed the message when Utopia's Oops! Wrong Planet closed with "Love Is the Answer." But not all Todd's encounters with the Beatles were loving.

Rock stars wanting to be actors and vice versa are a common phenomenon in Hollywood. No one quite managed to pull off the transition with the success of Cher, who remains the only rock icon to manage to not only make a successful transition to acting but also to win an Oscar for acting and not composing.
It wasn’t an easy transition though. Cher paired with husband Sonny Bono in her teens to become the duo simply known as Sonny and Cher. After a string of hit records, the duo launched a successful television variety show where Cher was able to hone her acting and comedic skills as she appeared in various sketches. Her marriage to Sonny would end in divorce, and Cher struggled to transition in to acting. Upon receipt of a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for “Silkwood,” Cher thanked all the Hollywood moguls who would never give her a job.

Academy Award nominee Chazz Palminteri will join the cast of his Broadway musical A Bronx Tale in the role of Sonny beginning May 24.
Written by Palminteri, A Bronx Tale features music by Oscar, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Grammy Award winner and Oscar and Tony Award nominee Glenn Slater.
Based on the critically acclaimed play that inspired the now-classic film, the musical draws on the wisdom of the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s, where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be. Featuring an original doo-wop score, the story is about respect, loyalty, love and family.
The musical is directed by two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro and four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, with choreography by Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo. The show opened on December 1, 2016 and is now playing on Broadway...

You can tell it’s film noir — even the cabin cruiser has Venetian blinds. Ernest Hemingway’s favorite film adaptation of his work is this uncompromised story of a good man taking a criminal course on the high seas. John Garfield is again ‘one man alone’ against the system, and the moral quicksand all but swallows up Patricia Neal, Phyllis Thaxter and Wallace Ford.

A great film score complements without burrowing too far into the ideas, wrestles with genre without locking the picture into a fixed identity, amplifies actors and actress’ choices without spilling the beans. A composer’s job is a balancing act. More and more, movie music finds itself backing off too far, devolving into incidental muzac, or going too far, where full-blast orchestral sounds pummel us like the Transformers’ energon punches. There’s a sweet spot, and the best film scores of the year ride it for an entire runtime. I shouldn’t be surprised that my favorite film scores of the year line-up closely with my favorite films of the year. As someone who goes to the movies with his ears as wide open as his eyes, I found myself captivated by 2014’s audio-visual offerings. Below, what I’d consider the "best" of the year (along with a few runner-ups,...

Filmmaker Paul Mazursky, the five-time Oscar nominee most famous for films such as "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice," "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" and "An Unmarried Woman," has passed away. According to a family spokesperson, he died of pulmonary cardiac arrest Monday in Los Angeles. He was 84. Mazursky's last theatrical release came nearly 20 years ago with the Chazz Palminteri adaptation "Faithful" but he has maintained a guest actor presence in film and television ever since. (And before -- in fact, a young Mazursky can be seen all the way back in Stanley Kubrick's 1953 film "Fear and Desire.") Younger audiences may know him as Norm from HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or his appearances on ABC's "Once and Again," but he established a long and distinguished career writing and directing relationship dramas and comedies and had been a singular voice throughout. Four of Mazursky's five Oscar nominations came for his work on the page.

Above all it was her personality. Pauline Kael had an overwhelming presence in a conversation. There will no doubt be many discussions of Kael's work and influence and with the publication of Brian Kellow's new biography Pauline Kael: A Life in the Dark, and the Library of America's forthcoming collection of her work.
She was the most powerful, loved and hated film critic of her time, but her work cannot be discussed objectively by simply reading it. She challenges you on every page, she's always in your face, and she functioned as the arbiter of any social group she joined. She was quite a dame.
She might have liked that "quite a dame." She wrote with slangy, jazzy prose, always pepped up, spinning on the edge of a whirlpool. She never saw a movie twice, and wrote her reviews first-draft, in longhand on yellow legal pads. In her years at the New Yorker,...
