Ralph Fienneswas disappointed at this year’s Oscars, when his highly acclaimed movie Conclavelost out in several big categories to Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Anora. However, the biggest night of the Hollywood awards season has had a huge effect on the movie’s resurgence on Peacock. After being on the platform for over two months, Conclave has jumped straight back into the number one spot on the streamer’s chart.
While there is little doubt that Fiennes, and other Conclave nominees – including the movie itself in the Best Picture category – would have been happier walking away with a statuette or two, the film’s resurrection on streaming as people flock to check out what the movie is all about is a very welcome consolation prize.

Call it Chekhov’s editing win. When Anora filmmaker Sean Baker beat Conclave editor Nick Emerson at the Oscars on Sunday night, it all but confirmed the night’s final result would be Anora crowned as Best Picture. That’s because Baker’s upset win in the category ahead of Conclave — the favorite in the odds and the presumed alternate pick to Anora in the Best Picture race — exploded the Edward Berger film's potential win package. Most pundits agreed that Conclave could win Best Picture with Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing, just like Argo did in 2013. But without the editing win, Conclave would’ve had to be Spotlight and won Best Picture with just a screenplay Oscar. Well, Conclave was never as strong as Spotlight throughout the season (and Spotlight didn’t have to face off against an industry juggernaut like Anora). So, Baker’s editing triumph was the ballgame.

Ralph Fiennes has carved a reputation as one of the greatest actors of a generation, and has been part of both some of the world’s biggest franchises – as M during the last movies of Daniel Craig’s James Bond tenure, and Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies – and quieter independent and intimate movies, such as his newest Oscar contender, Conclave. However, he has never managed to secure an Oscar for his work, and a bizarre bit of misinformation among Academy voters could prevent him from finally receiving his dues at this year’s ceremony.
According to Variety, at least two separate members have admitted to not voting for Fiennes, who is nominated this year in the Best Actor category for his role in Conclave, and has already landed several wins for the part during awards season. While this is not unusual in itself, the reason they did not put...

Cynthia Nixon revealed to “Sex and the City” co-star Kristin Davis on Monday that when she joined the HBO comedy as Miranda, she thought another famous “Kristin” had been cast as Charlotte: “I didn’t know who you were,” she said.
The other Kristin in question? British actress and recently a Best Actress Oscar nominee for “The English Patient,” Kristin Scott Thomas.
Nixon, who played Miranda on the hit HBO series, stopped by Davis’ “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast on Monday and talked about the funny case of mistaken identity as well as their experience on the initial episodes working together.
“Sarah [Jessica Parker] and I knew each other quite well. We’d worked together a bunch of times, and we were always auditioning for the same parts and stuff when we were kids,” Nixon said. “And Kim [Cattrall], I knew a little bit, I’d seen her in a few things.”

Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.
Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.
In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.

Ralph Fiennes arrives for an interview with Deadline in the cramped manager’s office at the Prince Charles Cinema just off London’s Leicester Square and it is too small to swing a cat. “Mind your head,” he calls to a visitor about to be knocked out by a low beam.
“Is this divine intervention?” I joke. It’s a pertinent point, considering Fiennes plays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, the Dean of Cardinals, the Vatican’s most powerful figure after the pope, in Edward Berger’s Conclave.

Why Did Ralph Fiennes Nearly Reject Lord Voldemort’s Role In Harry Potter?(Photo Credit – YouTube)
The Harry Potter film series, based on J.K. Rowling’s globally renowned books, became one of the most successful franchises in cinema history. The series, which spanned eight films released between 2001 and 2011, brought beloved characters to life and excited audiences with its rich storytelling and magical world. One of the most iconic figures in the saga is Lord Voldemort (played by Ralph Fiennes), the dark antagonist whose quest for immortality shaped the franchise’s central story.
Portraying such an iconic villain required an actor with immense screen presence, and ultimately, Fiennes brought Voldemort to life in a chilling and unforgettable performance. While fans loved Fiennes’s portrayal of The Dark Lord in the franchise, many might not know that he had initially hesitated to accept the role and was nearly going to turn it down.

By the time Ralph Fiennes joined the Harry Potter film series in 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the actor already had two Academy Award nominations. At the same time, by 2005, the franchise was already a major hit.
Voldemort is Harry Potter's biggest villain and his story casts a shadow over every installment. In the first film he was played by Richard Bremmer as he was stuck to the back of Professor Quirrell's head, and Christian Coulson played a younger Voldemort in Chamber of Secrets. However, he wasn't physically present in all of them and Fiennes joined the film in the fourth installment when Timothy Spall's Peter Pettigrew brought him back to a human form after killing off Robert Pattinson's Cedric Diggory during the Triwizard Tournament. In a new appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Ralph Fiennes revealed he needed convincing to play Voldemort because of his "misplaced snobbery,...

Ralph Fiennes began a nearly two-hour conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday by addressing the important thing first: the pronunciation of his first name.
“It’s one of those funky old English things; my parents dealt me this hand with this name,” the actor — whose name is produced “Rafe” — told the crowd inside Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theatre. “I can hear my father — [me] coming back from school, saying, ‘People keep saying it’s Ralph, it’s Ralph.’ And my father said, ‘No, they’re wrong.'”
Fiennes was honored with the festival’s outstanding performer of the year award, and sat down with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg for a look back at his long career. The conversation began with a discussion of Fiennes’ discovery of his love of acting and his big break in Wuthering Heights, which caught Steven Spielberg’s attention as he was casting 1993’s Schindler’s List.

French cinema star Juliette Binoche will preside over the 78th Festival de Cannes, marking a remarkable full-circle moment in her celebrated career. The acclaimed actress has been selected as the international jury president for the 2025 festival, exactly 40 years after her breakthrough performance launched her to global stardom.
Binoche’s appointment carries deep personal significance. French actress Juliette Binoche has been named President of the Jury for the 2025 edition of the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The honor, which was announced on Tuesday morning Paris time, will fall exactly 40 years after the Oscar-winning The English Patient star first touched down at the festival with André Téchiné’s Palme d’Or contender Rendez-vous in 1985.
Binoche follows in the footsteps of U.S. director Greta Gerwig whose jury feted Sean Baker’s Anora with the Palme d’Or last year.
“I’m looking forward to sharing these life experiences with the members of the Jury and the public. In 1985, I walked up the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury. I appreciate the privilege, the responsibility and the absolute need for humility,” said Binoche.

For over 30 years, Ralph Fiennes has been one of the most reliable leading men in Hollywood, anchoring everything from big-budget fantasy epics to grounded dramas with characteristic grace and sly humor. But for all his accolades, one particular honor has eluded him: an Academy Award. Fiennes earned his first nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1993 for his breakout role as Nazi officer Amon Göth in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, the embodiment of the banality of evil. He received a second nomination just three years later, this time for Best Actor for his starring role in Anthony Minghella's historical romance The English Patient, and this year, he's up for Best Actor again for his work in Edward Berger's closed-doors Catholic drama Conclave.
It's some of his best work yet, a subtle and deeply affecting performance well-deserving of a golden statuette, not just for the performance itself, but for...

One of the best things about film as a hobby is that there is a seemingly endless supply of fantastic gems to discover. Hundreds of films are released in theaters every year, with thousands more floating around somewhere on streaming, hard drives, and television. Some cinephiles with thousands of films under the belt may feel like they've "seen it all," but that could not be further from the truth. If legendary filmmakers like Martin Scorsese are still on the quest of discovery at the age of 82, then there is undoubtedly something out there for everyone to discover. The sheer number of masterpieces that have yet to be seen is simultaneously a blessing and a curse because no one film fan can catch everything on their watch list before their time expires. Oscars are the most revered and sought-after award in the film industry. Even to be nominated for an Academy Award is a great achievement, let alone win one.
However, some movies are such embodiments of cinematic excellence that they bag the highest honor of the filmmaking realm in several categories. It will surely be a surprise to many, but the most Oscars ever won by a movie is 11, and three movies have done so in the 96 years of awards. And no, it’s not Titanic.
It is quite a complex task to rank masterpieces that the Academy highly acclaims. But here is an attempt to do just that.

Seth MacFarlane Explains Peter Griffin's Startling Confession From a Classic Episode of 'Family Guy'
One of Family Guy's more memorable gags was during Season 4 in the 2006 episode, Untitled Griffin Family History. As the family could possibly drown in a panic room that's flooding, Peter has a major confession to make, "I did not care for The Godfather." His family's reactions are fairly relatable, despite the pending doom.
After the clip had gone viral, series creator and executive producer Seth MacFarlane jumped on X (formerly Twitter) to reveal one of the key lines when Peter was explaining to his stunned family why he didn't care for arguably one of the greatest films in cinematic history, "It insists upon itself."
"Since this has been trending, here's a fun fact: 'It insists upon itself' was a criticism my college film history professor used to explain why he didn't think 'The Sound of Music' was a great film. First-rate teacher, but I never quite followed that one.

Emilia Pérez is expected to dominate the list with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), and Best Adapted Screenplay, with three expected wins for Saldaña, Best Original Song (“El Mal”), and Best International Feature. Both of those movies won Golden Globes for Best Picture — Emilia as a comedy/musical, Brutalist as a drama — but it’s the latter that has jumped the top of our Oscars Best Picture rankings. The twice-delayed announcement of nominations for the 97th Academy Awards is finally coming Thursday. While many communities remain evacuated or in recovery mode due to the deadly Los Angeles area wildfires — and nerves remain shot everywhere — the industry is allowing itself a moment to once again contemplate the Oscars.
For Best Actor there is a strong field of contenders, with one clear standout (at the moment). But four of the five slots look to be safely locked up. That said, there are always challengers on the bubble and long shots well worth considering. So let's consider them all.
Locks
Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) — 39/20 odds
Brody has a lock on a nomination and — after winning the Golden Globe for his role as László Tóth, a fictional Hungarian Jewish architect subjected to the horrors of the Buchenwald death camp in World War II — has leapfrogged to the top of nearly everyone's list.

Academy Award-winning director Edward Berger’s highly anticipated movie Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes in the lead role, is all set to hit the Indian screens on January 31, 2024. The character-driven thriller is based on the best-selling novel by Robert Harris and explores one of the world’s most mysterious and sacred events: the election of a new Pope.
Two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes, known for notable works in films like Schindler’s List and The English Patient, leads the movie as Cardinal Lawrence. He delivers a commanding performance as a conflicted figure at the center of the secretive process of the Pope’s selection. Speaking about what drew him to the role, Fiennes said, “The script is a great read. It’s full of manipulative, rather dark figures doing dubious things. There’s ambition and corruption, but it goes deeper than political machinations.

In their golden age, Miramax was a company that had no trouble getting their films to be met with major accolades. Films like Amelie, Chicago, and The Aviator were some of the best examples of the Miramax touch in action: auteur-driven dramas with huge casts and broad emotionality that garnered numerous award nominations and burrowed their way into the pop culture zeitgeist. In the midst of this high point was Cold Mountain, a romantic Civil War epic from Anthony Minghella that sought to recapture the rapture of his previous Miramax masterpiece, The English Patient. To a certain degree, it worked—the film got general critical acclaim, made $173 million, and snagged seven Oscar nominations, and yet it feels like a film that's been long forgotten. So what happened?...

Unlike last year, there isn’t a clear favorite to win the Best Actor category at the 97th Academy Awards, making it a healthy and interesting competition. There were some incredible performances that were duly appreciated in cinemas this year. When the Academy announces its list of nominees on January 17, 2025, five out of these nine actors will probably make it to the final selection.

The Coen Brothers have established themselves as the brotherly duo behind some of the best deadpan comedy thrillers of all-time, and one of their best is now streaming for free. The pair began their directorial career in 1984 with Blood Simple, starring John Getz and Frances McDormand. They followed that up with an incredible run of movies, including Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, and The Hudsucker Proxy. But, in 1996, they released what many claim to be their pièce de résistance, Fargo.
Fans of the Coen Brothers, and new viewers can now stream Fargo absolutely free on Tubi. Like many of their movies, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed Fargo, while assembling an all-star cast for the film. The movie re-united them with McDormand (who is also Joel's wife), while adding in William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare, all in break-out roles.

Ralph Fiennes is on track to earn his third Academy Award nomination for his lead role in Conclave, which would be his first since 1996, when he was nominated for Best Actor for Anthony Minghella's romantic war drama The English Patient. Based on Michael Ondaatje's 1992 novel of the same name, The English Patient was widely praised and won a number of Academy Awards, including Best Picture. But not everyone was convinced of the film's brilliance, least of all Seinfeld's Elaine Benes (Julia Louis Dreyfus). Just eleven days before The English Patient took home nine Academy Awards, the Seinfeld episode, appropriately titled "The English Patient," aired on NBC, in which Elaine develops a burning hatred for the film that nearly ruins her life. The Season 8 episode not only gives us one of the most memorable Elaine rants but is eternally relatable for anyone who’s ever failed to understand...

Selena Gomez's chances at earning her first acting nomination at the Oscars could now be ruined. Although she is perhaps best known as a pop star and businesswoman, Gomez has also been an actor since she was a child. After being cast on Barney & Friends in the early 2000s, she went on to play roles in a variety of prominent film and television projects, including Wizards of Waverly Place, Only Murders in the Building, Hotel Transylvania, and Spring Breakers.
However, she delivered one of her best performances yet after joining the Emilia Pérez cast. The 2024 Jacques Audiard musical, which also stars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, sees Gomez playing the wife of a Mexican cartel leader. In addition to allowing her to showcase her musical chops in performances of songs such as the Oscar-shortlisted "Mi Camino," the movie has allowed her to be considered an Oscar frontrunner...

Who said the French and British couldn’t get along? When they’re not lighting up the screen together in films like Anthony Minghella’s “The English Patient, the 1992 adaptation of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights,” and recently in “The Return,” based on the last chapters of Homer’s “Odyssey,” pals and collaborators Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes enjoy just getting to spend a little time with one another. And thankfully, Criterion gave them the chance to do just that.
Stepping into the Criterion Closet, Binoche and Fiennes pretended not to know one another, but soon became quite intimate, a not-so-unforeseen side effect of the tight quarters they found themselves in. Binoche led most of the selection efforts, with the “Conclave” star serving as the curious pupil, having heard of many films she pulled down, but not actually having seen them. Lockerbie: A Search for Truth tells the shocking true story of a couple’s quest for justice after their daughter is killed in a deadly terrorist attack, and it has a great cast to bring its real-life characters to the screen. The five-part miniseries, airing on Peacock in the U.S. and Sky Atlantic in the UK, is adapted from the 2021 book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice by Jim Swire and Peter Biddulph. It chronicles Swire’s attempts to bring the perpetrators to justice after his daughter Flora is killed on Pan Am Flight 103.

Ralph Fiennes has had an extremely varied career throughout the years. He made his debut on television in 1991, playing the role of Michael in the TV series Prime Suspect. A year later, he also played the key role of Heathcliff in the 1992 adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. Since then, he has played in both dramatic and comedy roles, including parts in Schindler's List, Quiz Show, and the Wes Anderson movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. Ralph Fiennes has long been celebrated as one of the most popular and acclaimed actors to hail from Britain, but even he has his misfires. Known for his commanding presence and intense performances, Fiennes first gained international recognition in the 1990s with his chilling portrayal of the Nazi war criminal Amon Göth in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination and BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor. He followed this success with another Oscar-nominated performance in The English Patient, solidifying his reputation for taking on complex, dramatic characters.
Nonetheless, Fiennes' ability to balance commercial success with artistic projects has been a hallmark of his career. He brought a new energy to the iconic role of M in the James Bond franchise, beginning with Skyfall in 2012, and charmed audiences in Wes Anderson’s colorful The Grand Budapest Hotel as the whimsical and polished Gustave H.

The Ralph Fiennes' led Conclave has proven to be a theatrical hit, and now audiences can see it on streaming before it potentially becomes an Oscar contender. In 1982, 76-year-old Henry Fonda finally won a long-overdue Best Actor Oscar trophy, becoming the oldest Best Actor winner up to that time. His last acting nomination had been in 1941, and he held the record for the longest span between acting nominations until 2023. Judd Hirsch broke Fonda’s 41-year record 41 years after it was set, earning his second supporting nomination for “The Fabelmans” 42 years after his bid for “Ordinary People.” Now, one of his former co-stars could possibly break that record.
Hirsch earned two Best Comedy Actor Emmys for the sitcom “Taxi” (1978-1982). Carol Kane co-starred on the series from 1980-1983, also earning two Emmys, one for lead and one for supporting comedy actress. She is now receiving rave reviews for her role in “Between the Temples,” and might be on track to break the record Hirsch broke two years ago. With both “Conclave” to satisfy the middle-aged dads of the world yearning for a classic mid-scale thriller, and “The Return” to satisfy the middle-aged moms obsessed with history and buff Brits, it’s arguably never been a better time to have stock invested in Ralph Fiennes. A thespian of both the stage and screen, Fiennes has become a steady staple of the arts, fluent in both Shakespeare and splashy genre fare. So, too, has Fiennes become a staple of our lives; it almost feels like a rite of passage to learn that the man’s name is actually pronounced “Rafe.”
On the screen, Fiennes has excelled not only in his own performances—never delivering anything less than dignified, even in its delinquency—but in his choice of roles as well. Boasting an eclectic filmography that spans the entire gamut of genre and prestige works alike, Fiennes has more than earned...

Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are undeniably two of the cinema's most gifted yet criminally underrated performers, with the illustrious duo having famously collaborated on three silver screen productions over the course of more than thirty years. Fiennes made his dazzling film debut when he portrayed the tortured literary character Heathcliff in Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, memorably appearing opposite French acting sensation Binoche in the sweeping adaptation.
Though it failed to make a splash with critics upon its release, the talented pair were able to reunite and redeem themselves four short years later when they headlined the Academy Award-winning romantic drama The English Patient, a major critical and commercial success that took home nine Oscars, including Best Picture. In 2024, Fiennes and Binoche once again joined creative forces when they starred in the Odyssey-inspired drama The Return, with audiences raving about their magnetic chemistry and riveting performances; let's check...

One of the most memorable episodes of "Seinfeld" is named after the grand love story "The English Patient," which would go on to win the Best Picture Oscar a few weeks after the episode's airing on March 13, 1997. "Seinfeld" is known for finding humor in the small, ordinary things like disliking a movie and not understanding why it's so beloved. Everyone seems to love "The English Patient" — Elaine's boyfriend (who dumps her for disliking it), her friends, and even her boss who insists on taking Elaine after she lies about not having seen it. The World War II-era blockbuster is about a plane crash survivor with a burned face who recovers at a picturesque Italian monastery. While a kind nurse cares for him and tries to discover his forgotten identity, flashbacks reveal his passionate affair with a married Englishwoman.

The Return, starring Ralph Fiennes as Greek hero Odysseus, is about what happens to the veteran of the Trojan War after his long journey home. As Odysseus struggles to get back his wife, Penelope (Juliette Binoche), and his son, Telemachus (Charlie Plummer), demons from his past and present alike continue to plague him.
It's the first time Fiennes and Binoche have appeared together on-screen since 1996's The English Patient, but The Return is as gripping and emotional as that Oscar-winning movie. In a year within which Fiennes took audiences behind the veil of the Conclave, he takes on the role of a hero in The Return. As Odysseus, he carries the long years of war and exhaustive efforts to get to his loved ones with him at every turn.
Fans of Greek history and myth, notably the works of Homer, know Odysseus's name. In the Iliad and the Odyssey, Odysseus is a constant.

Star Trek often gets overlooked by the main stream for awards. It happens all the time. Star Trek: First Contact got beat for the 1997 Best Picture by the English Patient. Sure, First Contact didn't even get nominated, but isn't that sort of the issue? How many of you like The English Patient? Let alone, seen it. Yet, it won.
What's up with that?
Sarcastic commentary aside, Star Trek has rarely ever earned nods at the Academy Awards or the Emmys. They've been nominated for some, with The Motion Picture being the first film of the franchise to do so, earning several nods in 1980. Yet, they only have one win; in 2010 for Star Trek 2009. It won for Best Makeup. They've done better at the Emmys, winning 19 times but only out of 59 nominations.
So they've gotten a little love from the mainstream. Yet, for Star Trek fans, it's always been the Saturn...
