‘Leo & Lou,’ From ‘Elite’s’ Zeta Studios, Acquired by Filmax (Exclusive)
Image
Rapidly building a packed sales slate at Berlin, Filmax has pounced on “Leo & Lou,” a feel-good road movie set against the stunning, windswept landscapes of Galicia in northern Spain and produced by Zeta Studios, producer of Netflix hit “Elite.”

Filmax will unveil first-look images at Berlin’s European Film Market.

In the film, Leo, described as a mute young orphan girl with a world of thoughts inside her, and Lou, a jaded, middle-aged nihilist, take a journey together. “As their paths intertwine, an unbreakable bond forms, one built on trust, compassion and adventure,” Filmax said in a statement.

“Lou & Leo” toplines Isak Férriz, key cast in Netflix global hit “Burning Body,” and Julia Sulleiro. Written by Carlos C. Tomé and Carlos Solano, “Leo & Lou” marks Solano’s debut as a feature film director after his Goya-nominated short film “Strangers on the Road.”

The ensemble also features Manuel Manquiña (“Airbag...

Rolling Stone 500: Radiohead’s Futuristic Breakthrough ‘Ok Computer’
Image
As part of our newly updated survey of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, we’re publishing a series of pieces on the making of key albums from the list. Radiohead’s Ok Computer came in at number 42.

Before Ok Computer, Radiohead were seen by many as the band behind “Creep,” the 1993 grunge-wannabe hit that Alicia Silverstone casually dismissed in the movie Clueless as “the maudlin music of the university station.” After Ok Computer, they were hailed as musical saviors who could usher rock & roll into the 21st century.

Juanma Bajo Ulloa nurturing his new Baby - Production / Funding - Spain
The Spanish filmmaker is back in the director’s chair with a psychological suspense flick about problematic motherhood, featuring sparse dialogue and starring Rosie Day and Harriet Sansom Harris. Shot last summer over a period of six weeks, at various locations in the provinces of Álava and Biscay, Baby – which is currently in post-production – will be the sixth fiction film by Juanma Bajo Ulloa, a director who, at the tender age of 24, scooped the Golden Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival with his feature debut, Alas de mariposa. This movie was followed by others such as La madre muerta, Airbag, Frágil and Gypsy King (2015). Now he is back with another psychological drama, shot in the Basque language and featuring sparse dialogue, in which motherhood will be a driver of conflict. Starring British actress Rosie Day (Down a Dark Hall) and Us thesp Harriet Sansom...

Cannes– Rosie Day (“Outlander”), Harriet Sanson Harris (“Phantom Thread”) and Natalia Tena (“Game of Thrones”) will star in Spaniard Juanma Bajo Ulloa’s psychological thriller “Baby,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The project will be pitched on May 19 at Fantastic 7, a new Cannes initiative seeing seven of the world’s most prestigious fantastic festivals back and mentor a genre project.

“Baby” is put forward by the Sitges Intl. Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, represented by Sitges deputy general manager Mónica Garcia Massagué, which has created Fantastic 7 with Cannes Film Market executive director Jérôme Paillard and Ventana Sur and Blood Window founder Bernardo Bergeret.

Radiohead’s Summer 2018 U.S. Tour Is a Career-Capping Triumph
Radiohead’s summer U.S. tour seems designed to prove a few self-evident truths. For one thing, In Rainbows remains their hands-down best album, though all votes for Kid A will be counted and “There There” is their peak song. For another thing: They’ve remembered how much fun it is to be the World’s Greatest Rock Band, to the point where their live show is a mad career-capping rush of exuberant energy. Their four-night run at New York’s Madison Square Garden last week was one for the ages.
