Canadian Actor Gordon Pinsent, Who Starred In ‘Away From Her’, Has Died At 92

Gordon Pinsent, the adored Canadian actor whose career hit its peak well into his 70s with an award-winning performance as the heartbroken husband in “Away From Her”, has died.

Pinset died on Saturday evening at age 92, his friend actor Mark Critch confirmed.

The Newfoundland native, a household name in Canada for decades after his many appearances on stage and screen, became known internationally after his Genie Award-winning turn as Grant in Sarah Polley’s acclaimed directorial debut.

His dignified portrayal so impressed Daniel Day-Lewis, who went on to win the best actor Oscar in 2008 for “There Will Be Blood,” that he sent an email to Polley praising Pinsent’s performance as one of the most “astonishing” he’d ever seen.

More awful news continues to roll in as actress and Gemini Award winner Shirley Douglas has passed away at the age of 86. The news was revealed by her son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, with a heartbreaking post on his Twitter account. "Early this morning, my mother, Shirley Douglas, passed away due to complications surrounding pneumonia," Sutherland writes. He also adds: My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life. Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming."

Born in Saskatchewan in 1934, Douglas celebrated her 86th birthday just days ago. She is the daughter of former Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas, though Shirley was drawn to performing as a young girl. She officially began working as an actress in 1950 with a role in the Dominion Drama Festival, managing to win a best actress award with her debut performance.

Shirley Douglas, a Canadian actor and activist, died on Sunday of complications from pneumonia. She was 86.

Her son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, announced the sad news of her death on Twitter and specified that it was unrelated to coronavirus.
