Be it, Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, or X-Men: The Animated Series, these versions of the characters greatly influenced later iterations of them, something that fans have enjoyed a lot through the years.

The 97th Academy Awards took place on the second of March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated some of the finest work in cinema last year – whether it was Anora‘s five wins or Adrien Brody winning Best Actor, the Oscars honored a diverse range of talent and storytelling. While fans were happy to see their favorites lift the golden trophy, others felt like many deserving candidates were snubbed this year. Either way, the Oscars 2025 was a night of celebration and utter excellence.

Captain America: Brave New World star Carl Lumbly isn't sure what his Marvel Cinematic Universe future holds after the Phase Five blockbuster. However, if the opportunity presents itself, the acclaimed actor admits he's open to featuring in the rival DC Universe.
Speaking with Collider, Lumbly, who portrays supersoldier and Korean War veteran Isaiah Bradley in Brave New World, expressed his interest in doing a potential Dcu project after finding out his long-time collaborator, Mike Flanagan, was given the go-ahead to write his upcoming horror-tragedy film, Clayface. Not only would the prospect of working with Flanagan attract Lumbly to the Dcu, but his experience portraying comic book characters over the years makes him an ideal fit for James Gunn and Peter Safran's cinematic universe.

The DC Universe continues to check all the right boxes under James Gunn's watch with the announcement that Jason Momoa is taking on the role of Lobo in "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." It isn't surprising, considering that the former "Aquaman" expressed interest in the role, even before becoming the King of Atlantis. And, well, just look at the guy -- he's practically part Czarnian.
This isn't Warner Bros.' first effort with Lobo, though. The first attempt to give the character the true spotlight came about in 2000 via a DC animated show and would have featured The Main Man center stage in a show penned by John P. McCann, whose credits included "Animaniacs," "Freakazoid," and "Batman: The Animated Series." By that point, Lobo had already appeared in the DC Animated Universe with "Superman: The Animated Series" as well as "Justice League," and the hope was to apply the same quality to the character.

Henry Cavill was a notable absentee among the former Superman actors who came together for a panel at Megacon Orlando. While fans speculated that Cavill’s absence could be due to his less-than-stellar exit from DC, one of these actors has revealed the real reason behind it. Tom Welling, who brought Superman to life in Smallville, shared that Cavill was busy with a shoot.

A celebration of Christopher Reeve's impact on the Superman character drew an unprecedented gathering of actors behind some of the Man of Steel's most notable performances at MegaCon Orlando on Feb. 8. The tribute brought together
Tyler Hoechlin (Superman & Lois), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Dean Cain (Lois & Clark), Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series), George Newbern (Justice League), and Tom Welling (Smallville) and successfully bridged the legacies of nearly five decades of Superman on screen.
The assembly is a small, but super sampling of Reeve's impact on every actor who has since donned Superman's cape. Each performer present at the MegaCon panel stepped into the role during a distinct chapter in Superman's screen presence, some even directly tethered to Reeve's canon.

When I was a child, I always preferred Batman. But now that I've grown, I've realized that I'm much closer to Clark Kent — minus the glasses. A stable journalism job at a major city print publication with his own apartment? Clark Kent is living the reporter's dream!
Most superheroes have day jobs where they wear different kinds of suits. Take Matt Murdock/Daredevil: He's a defense attorney, showing he's a man who jumps to champion righteous causes and, also, a self-martyr. That Matt practices the law by day but takes it into his own hands at night also adds fundamental tension to his character. In the words of foundational "Daredevil" writer Frank Miller, only a Catholic like Matt Murdock could be a lawyer and a vigilante.
What about Superman, though? Since his first appearance in "Action Comics" #1, Clark Kent has been a journalist — but what does that say about his character?...

The upcoming 2025 Superman movie will work in several ways, being the first movie in the newly relaunched DC Universe while also rebooting the Man of Steel. Meant to be a more traditional take on the hero compared to the DC Extended Universe version, it will also have a much more accurate take on Lex Luthor. Most interestingly, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor may draw from an iconic TV show inspiration.
In the trailer for Superman, Lex Luthor's company is shown to be LuthorCorp and not LexCorp. The former was the name given to the company in the TV series Smallville, which was essentially a Superman prequel. While the new movie for the Man of Steel isn't an origin story for the hero,...

Marvel and DC Comics have both cultivated fandom with a shared universe between series. This web of continuity entangles young minds, who come to see the comics not merely as pulp adventures, but gateways to a whole other world whose history they could study and master. Then, superheroes took over 21st century Hollywood by importing this same storytelling model. But the first major superhero cinematic universe debuted on the small screen, not the silver one. Yes, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was the DC Animated Universe (Dcau). A series of interconnected cartoons with overlapping cast and crew, the Dcau ran for 14 years from 1992 to 2006.
That long run would've been impossible without the people who made these cartoons. The first Dcau cartoon, "Batman: The Animated Series," was co-created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski. Timm's distinctive art style (like Jack Kirby meets pin-up girl posters) became the Dcau standard.

Olivia Hussey has died at the age of 73. The actress was best-known for portraying one of the two ill-fated protagonists in director Franco Zeffirelli's legendary 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, for which she won the Golden Globe (Most Promising Newcomer) thanks to her mesmerizing performance as Juliet Capulet. Hussey also lent her lovely voice to Superman: The Animated Series, and she's widely beloved by die-hard fans of the horror genre for her work on Black Christmas (more on these appearances later).
Hussey was only 17 years old when Romeo & Juliet began its theatrical run, and controversy courted the young thespian because she appeared topless on-screen during the movie's infamous love scene with Romeo Montague (Leonard Whiting). Things are looking up indeed! After a week of build-up, the highly anticipated trailer for James Gunn’s Superman finally arrived, and all eyes are on the sky. As the first live-action installment of the Dcu, a lot is riding on Superman. Not only is an entire cinematic universe dependent on the success of this film, but Gunn must also cut through the world’s cynicism and deliver a take on the character whose cinematic depiction, for many audiences, hasn’t resonated since 1978.

Superman: The Animated Series gave viewers definitive portrayals of Superman and his world, brought to life by an impressive roster of voice talent. Superman: Tas is a beloved entry in the DC Animated Universe, praised for its nuanced storytelling, iconic art style, and cast of memorable characters. Many big names lent their voices to the series, portraying heroes, villains, and everything in between—sometimes so subtly that audiences may not have realized their involvement.
Superman: Tas (1996-2000) followed the success of Batman: The Animated Series, expanding the DC Animated Universe (Dcau). While focusing on Superman’s battles against his rogues' gallery and larger-than-life threats, the series also explored the Man of Steel’s humanity, relationships, and dual identity. The show’s voice cast brought these characters to life with performances that ranged from deeply emotional to delightfully villainous. Ernie Hudson is known worldwide for his movie and TV roles, but most fans don't know that he's also a fantastic voice actor. Angry Birds: Mystery Island features Hudson in the scene-stealing role of Marlon, who surprises the main characters with his giant personality. And while it's just the latest of many voice acting roles the Ghostbusters star has had over his career, Hudson spoke to Cbr about how he's long wanted to spend more time in the animated space.
In this interview, Hudson talked about portraying Marlon in Angry Birds: Mystery Island Season 1, Episode 4, "A-squawk-alypse Now," and why the role was so much fun for him. He also looked back on his previous voice acting parts -- and the ones he didn't get, like not voicing Winston Zeddemore in animated follow-ups The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters. Find out why voice acting is a passion for one of the most beloved actors working today.

The TV series Smallville was a beloved show, especially in its earlier seasons. This was due to its more down-to-earth tone and relatable characters, which made it more of a drama than a superhero series. John Schneider's Jonathan Kent continues to be seen as a standout character from the series.
The adoptive father of Clark Kent, a.k.a. Kal-El, Jonathan's character was central in molding him from a young boy into Superman. Sadly, Schneider wasn't around for the entire series, with his initial exit being quite drastic. He did come back, however, cementing how important he was to the series' themes.
Updated by Alex Roush on November 21, 2024: John Schneider's portrayal of Jonathan Kent on Smallville was the first time the character had truly been delved into. This allowed Schneider's version to expound on the character like never before, which is why Jonathan Kent's Smallville death was so tragic.

The following contains spoilers from Superman & Lois, Season 4, Episode 6, "When the Lights Come On," now streaming on The CW App.
One of the biggest aspects of Superman & Lois' final season has been Lex Luthor's descent into ruthless villainy. No matter how much Lex has a chance to walk away from his rivalry with the Kents, he keeps trying to kill them. He can't let go of the fact Lois' stories landed him in jail for crimes he didn't commit.
10 years later, Lex's hatred has seen him reject a shot at happiness with his daughter, Elizabeth. He is even alienating investors in his empire, making it clear they need to relocate to Smallville. As this grudge kicks into high-gear, however, Superman & Lois does improve an iconic concept in his life: the idea of Lex's sidekick.

Batman: The Animated Series is one of the best animated shows of all time. The show ran for several years on Fox, airing 85 episodes before moving to The WB to air its final 24 episodes. While the Bruce Timm-produced show was running, they made DC's best animated film to date, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, released in 1993. Following the show's success and the previous movie, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero was released in 1998, with Kevin Conroy reprising his role as Batman. The movie took place between the end of the original series and the start of the newly titled The New Batman Adventures that aired on The WB.

"You'll believe a man can fly" is a misnomer, given how Superman is technically an alien. But Superman: The Animated Series showed the world that an orphaned alien raised on a farm in Kansas has more humanity than all the big shots in society. It is a low bar, but one that brings hope to millions of hearts around the globe, making the Man of Steel a working-class hero.
However, the show was far from being a sunny affair, as there were times that tested Superman and his friends to their limits. From devastating wars to attempts on life, some of the episodes were downright dark in plot and themes. And this is where Superman: The Animated Series shines as a grounded take on a timeless character.

Superman: The Animated Series shows a world full of hope through the eyes of the man often mistaken for a bird and sometimes a plane. The Man of Steel's superpowers make some people consider him a hero and others perceive him as a threat, but the TV series presents a world that isn't so black and white. And through the same developers as the critically acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, the show conquers the uphill task of making Superman's struggles relatable.
Both series share a vision of making an insanely powerful character as human as possible. Developers Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett find the right tone for their version of Superman, while writers including Paul Dini and Rich Fogel shape the show's heart. Superman: The Animated Series pays homage to Superman's long comic history while creating something unique. Its mellow aesthetics invite the audience to experience the day-to-day adventures of mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn recently revealed what he would title a DC Universe movie featuring Batman and Superman. While no such project has been officially announced yet, DC fans do not need to worry about another Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice situation.
Responding to a fan in the comments of his latest Instagram post, Gunn revealed that he wouldn't use Superman and Batman or Batman and Superman (the fan's suggested titles) for a team-up movie featuring the two iconic DC Superheroes. Instead, the DC Studios head would use World's Finest as the title, referencing the comic book series of the same name that was published by DC from 1941 to 1986 and featured Batman and Superman in almost every issue.

There are many great examples of Superman TV shows. From the classic TV series of the '50s to the acclaimed modern Superman and Lois, there is a Superman story for every generation. But one stands out as the best of them all.
Superman: The Animated Series is the greatest Superman TV show of all time. The animation is clean and dynamic, with great backgrounds and character designs. The cast of characters includes some of Superman's most classic friends and foes, from Lois Lane and Lex Luthor to Livewire and Lobo. But one of the best thigs about it just might be its portrayal of the title character.
Superman is as amazing as ever, the Man of Tomorrow has a perfect get up, as Superman or as Clark Kent. Clark Kent is an often overlooked aspect of the Superman mythos, especially in more recent iterations. That aspect is important,...

Batman Beyond is known for delivering some of the darkest moments in DC's history, consistently pushing the boundaries of storytelling. While many fans point to Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker as one of DC's most disturbing films, it was simply an escalation of the unsettling themes already present in the series. Although Batman: The Animated Series had several successors and follow-ups, Batman Beyond and the shows featuring it remain particularly memorable for the risks they took in engaging a younger audience.
Debuting in 1992, Batman: The Animated Series set a new standard in children's television by presenting a darker take on the Caped Crusader and his mythology. Serving as the anchor for an entire animated universe, Batman: The Animated Series launched several spinoffs, including Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Static Shock. The following contains major spoilers for The Union, now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix's Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry flick The Union is the latest movie in the action-comedy subgenre -- and it works because of Wahlberg, Berry and their supporting cast. Action comedies often try so hard to be both cool and funny that many of them fail at either one. In welcome contrast, the actors in The Union have a high degree of self-awareness that makes the film entertaining, even when a stunt or a joke might not land.
There's no doubt that The Union wants to be cool. The film follows an elite group of government agents, and opens with the prototypical secret agent action sequence that audiences have seen many times before. But once Wahlberg and Berry are on screen together, the movie takes off and never looks back. Whether it gets the sequel it wants is up for debate,...

Batman: Caped Crusader composer Frederik Wiedmann expresses interest in eventual animated spinoffs and crossovers, though he admits that it's up to the producers to approve them. Batman: Caped Crusader's vintage setting and noir inspirations provide potential for a new DC Animated Universe. Characters like Catwoman and the Gcpd's Renee Montoya could be likely candidates for spinoff shows, and Batman could eventually meet 1940s versions of famous heroes like Superman and the Justice Society.
Batman: Caped Crusader composer discusses the possibility of future DC animated spinoffs, crossovers, and sequels. DC and Prime Video's Batman: Caped Crusader presents a fresh take on the Dark Knight, setting Batman's early years in a noir-inspired 1940s Gotham City. Hamish Linklater's Batman faces several classic villains for the first time in Batman: Caped Crusader season 1, and a few others will likely make an appearance in an eventual Batman: Caped Crusader season 2.

2024 seems to be shaping up to be quite the year for superhero content. After The Boys, Invincible, X-Men ’97, and Deadpool & Wolverine, DC is finally getting a chance to enter the race with its newest offering, Batman: Caped Crusader. The show was announced way back in 2021, and after almost three years of radio silence, the show has arrived in all it’s noir glory, putting the detective back in Detective Comics.
Batman: Caped Crusader || Prime Video
The show follows Batman and his allies and enemies in the grim realities of the 1940s, with the Caped Crusader completely stripped of all his modern gadgets. However, characters like Harley Quinn are very much present in this timeline, which affords an interesting dynamic for the story to go in. With Bruce Timm’s latest offering in Batman’s mythos, fans seem very excited about the Prime Video show and what it has to offer.

Superman: The Animated Series (1995) is one of the best Superman animated shows, showcasing a perfect balance between the "symbol of hope" and "action hero" aspects of the character. The Fleischer Superman cartoons from 1940 were groundbreaking and set the stage for future animated series, with impressive animation and memorable moments. Other great animated Superman series include My Adventures With Superman (2023), a love letter to the character and previous Superman shows, and the unique Legion of Superheroes.
Every Superman animated series brought something different into the DC Universe, from Silver Age adaptations to modern stories. While DC released several Superman animated shows in the 20th century, some of which were just compilations of previous cartoons, the Man of Steel didnt receive many animated series in the 2000s. To put things in perspective, Batman starred in five animated solo shows from 1993 to 2013, while Superman only received two solo animated shows from 1995 to 2023.

Wonder Woman's potential animated series teased with exciting new DC Universe art, aiming to flesh out DC's new universe with unique animation style. Despite being part of DC's Trinity, Wonder Woman has never had her own animated show - but that could change with this upcoming project. With Wonder Woman's rich mythology and popularity, her own animated series could be the perfect way to reintroduce her to the DC Universe.
Wonder Woman's very own animated series is imagined through exciting new DC Universe art, over a year since James Gunn's comments on the character in animation. The upcoming Dcu is set to officially begin with Creature Commandos later in 2024, and James Gunn's Superman flying into theaters July 11, 2025. As the universe begins to get fleshed out, a Wonder Woman animated series could be the perfect project.

Granny Goodness, although briefly featured in other live-action adaptations, remains an untapped and menacing villain potential for a cinematic realm. Lobo's success in Superman: Tas despite censorship showcases his anti-hero persona can translate effectively to a broader audience in live-action. Brainiac's portrayal in Superman: Tas proves he would be a sophisticated, compelling, and modern adversary if brought to the big screen in a live-action movie.
Superman: The Animated Series featured a swathe of incredible villains who would flourish in a live-action Dcu movie. While many classic Superman: Tas foes have appeared prominently throughout the Dcu timeline, several incredible adversaries have only appeared in live-action in television series. Others, meanwhile, have never been adapted outside of animation, despite their impeccable appearances in Superman: The Animated Series that prove how effective they would truly be.

Add Beck Bennett to the list of Saturday Night Live stars populating superhero movies. James Gunn recently announced that Bennett would appear in his new Superman film as Steve Lombard, a loudmouthed sportswriter who lives to torment Clark Kent.
Bennett is just the latest SNL star to find his way into the Marvel and DC cinematic universes, too. Here are other SNL vets who suited up for super action…
1 Robert Downey Jr.
The undisputed king of this list, Downey spent a tortured year as an SNL cast member when he was only 21. “I learned so much in that year about what I wasn’t,” he told the Off-Camera Show’s Sam Jones. “I was not somebody who was going to do impressions. I was somebody who was very ill-suited for rapid-fire sketch comedy.”

Many of the most popular characters in the DC Animated Universe, and from DC as a whole, are the villains. Rogues like Joker, Lex Luthor, and Darkseid are nearly or just as famous as Batman and Superman, and fans can't get enough of them. Among the best characters in the DC Animated Universe are its wide assortment of female villains.
The DC Animated Universe has no shortage of memorable femme fatales. Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited all feature incredible villainesses, with several of them even being created for this universe, and Gotham Girls is entirely centered around them. Harley Quinn is unquestionably the most beloved female villain in the Dcau, but there are a number of others who deserve the same amount of love and attention.
