Tyler Childers Surprises, Thrills at Robert Earl Keen’s Texas Flood Benefit
Image
Robert Earl Keen was three songs into his headlining set at his Applause for the Cause benefit last Thursday night, as a crowd of 5,600 exhausted, sweaty, and fulfilled fans hung on his every word. They had been brought here through tragedy, but this was a night of healing at Whitewater Amphitheater, set along the Guadalupe River outside of New Braunfels, Texas.

The event was Keen’s brainchild — a coming together of artists and fans in the same area where flooding on July 4 killed at least 138 people and saw devastation stretching for nearly 30 miles,...

When the pandemic brought the live-music industry to a complete stop in 2020, Bruce Springsteen found himself at home with a lot of free time on his hands. He decided to make good use of it by poring over his massive vault of unreleased music, pulling out seven complete records he shelved between 1983 and 2018, and packaging them together as Tracks II: The Lost Albums, which features an astounding 74 songs most hardcore fans have never heard.

“If you look at them as a group, they’re sort of genres that I haven...

Donald Trump Puts Bruce Springsteen on Notice Upon Return From European Tour: “We’ll See How It Goes for Him”
Image
President Donald Trump thinks Bruce Springsteen is “highly overrated … not a talented guy – just a pushy, obnoxious Jerk.” Trump shared his always unfiltered comments on his Truth social media platform on Friday, following Springsteen’s admonishment of his administration at the opening of the E Street Band’s European “Land of Hopes and Dreams” tour Wednesday night (May 14) in Manchester, England.

“Sleepy Joe didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing, but Springsteen is ‘dumb as a rock,’ and couldn’t see what was going on, or could he (which is even worse!),” Trump wrote, referencing former President Joe Biden. “This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to Keep His Mouth Shut until he gets back into the Country, that’s just ‘standard fare’. Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”

To recap: Springsteen opened the European leg...

Bruce Springsteen’s New Tour Is a Fiery Rebuke of the Trump Administration
Image
Bruce Springsteen seems determined to use his newly launched tour as a fiery rebuke of the Trump administration. Just days ago, the New Jersey rocker announced he was rebranding the outing as the “Land of Hope and Dreams Tour,” and during Wednesday’s kickoff show in Manchester, England, he delivered several pointed speeches targeting Trump and his administration’s actions during its early months.

In his first remarks of the night, delivered before even a single note was played, Springsteen said, “The mighty E Street Band is here tonight to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock and roll, in dangerous times. In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, and has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration. Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy...

Image
Bruce Springsteen kicked off his 2025 Land of Hope and Dreams European tour tonight at Co-op Live in Manchester, England, by delivering a fiery speech that railed against Donald Trump.

“The mighty E Street Band is here tonight to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock & roll, in dangerous times,” he told the crowd right after walking onto the stage. “In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, and has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt,...

‘Severance’ Review: Episode 8 Sows Disharmony in Lumon’s Most Pivotal Disciple — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Severance” Season 2, Episode 8, “Sweet Vitriol.” For coverage of earlier episodes, read our previous reviews.]

Well, well, well, look who’s back in town.

It’s been over a month since we last saw Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) fleeing the Lumon parking lot in her white Volkswagen Rabbit. Preferring to take her chances solo, in the outside world, rather than go with Helena Eagan (Britt Lower) to meet with the board, Harmony’s whereabouts — and loyalties — have been a major question mark hovering over Season 2’s steadily escalating events. Where did she go? What is she up to? Who has her fealty? Episode 8 provides answers — lots of answers, including a few we didn’t know to ask — but it preserves the suspense around that last, critical query: whether she’s turned on the company that fired her, or she remains loyal to Lumon, as she has her whole life.

But let’s start with where.

40 Years of ‘Born in the U.S.A.’: The E Street Band Looks Back at Bruce Springsteen’s Biggest Album
Image
Sometime in 1984, when E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg saw a bunch of potential covers for Bruce Springsteen’s next album, he instantly noticed the Annie Leibovitz shot of the singer’s jeans-clad rear end. “My comment, jokingly, was ‘I like that one because that’s the view I always have,'” Weinberg says in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “Everybody laughed, and then they picked that shot. And it was a steamroller after that.”

In the new episode, Weinberg and E Street Band keyboardist...

Charlie Robison, Rough-Hewn Texas Songwriter, Dead at 59
Image
Charlie Robison, whose gritty songwriting and independent spirit helped pave the way for modern Texas music, has died at 59. His wife Kristen Robison confirmed his death in a Facebook post.

While a cult figure in the mainstream country music world, his influence throughout his native Texas and on the Red Dirt scene was undeniable. Robison’s 1998 album Life of the Party is a touchstone for Texas artists and was a ubiquitous soundtrack across the Lone Star State in the late Nineties, earning him a reputation as a successor to Robert Earl Keen.

Congressman Ro Khanna on DeSantis’ Fatal Flaw, AI Regulation and How the Media Should Cover Trump
Image
While representing Silicon Valley’s 17th congressional district, Democratic congressman Ro Khanna has pulled off a unique political balancing act. He’s successfully positioned himself as a progressive capitalist, supported by billionaires in Big Tech while serving as a co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ last presidential campaign, which pilloried the billionaire class. But Khanna sees bringing disparate groups and ideas together as the key to success in politics and life.

After getting a law degree from Yale, Khanna interned for former President Jimmy Carter and former Vice President Al Gore, as well as volunteered for one of President Barack Obama’s early campaigns. He eventually served in the Obama administration before heading into private practice at a high-profile Silicon Valley law firm. He lectured at Stanford, then launched his own political career, running unsuccessfully for Congress once, before winning on his second try. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Khanna discusses his Hollywood staples,...

Bruce Springsteen Holds Court at Irish Pub, Leads Patrons in Song
Image
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s world tour takes them to Dublin this weekend for three shows at the Rds Arena. Prior to hitting the stage, Springsteen connected with some locals at a town pub.

Springsteen grabbed a drink at The Burrow in Rathangan, Co. Kildare, and even led the patrons in an impromptu a cappella performance of “My Hometown.” His choice of song was rather poetic, as Springsteen’s ancestral roots trace back to Rathangan.

While in Ireland, Springsteen also paid a visit to the Dublin home of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan. MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, shared a photo of the two musicians with the caption: “What an amazing honour and a beautiful experience to get a visit from The Boss. Such a truly wonderful man and a total genius!”

Michael Cronin of the Irish band Cronin was also in attendance and said Springsteen and...

How Zach Braff Grew From Garden State And Wanted To Emulate James L. Brooks For A Good Person [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Nearly 20 years ago, "Scrubs" star Zach Braff made quite the splash as a filmmaker with his feature directorial debut "Garden State." A perfect example of an indie darling, the film announced Braff to the world as an exciting new talent behind the camera. However, since then, he's only directed two more feature films. There was the crowdfunded "Wish I Was Here," which arrived 10 years after "Garden State" to middling reviews, and the studio heist comedy "Going in Style," which starred Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin, and it took Braff outside of his indie comfort zone. Of course, in that time Braff has also directed episodes of acclaimed TV shows like "Ted Lasso" and "Shrinking," and he's learned a lot over the years.

That brings us to "A Good Person," Braff's fourth feature film (watch the trailer here). As a writer and director, Braff heads back to New Jersey...

Watch Trailer for ‘Springsteen on Broadway’ Netflix Special
On December 15, after 236 performances since October of last year, all at the Walter Kerr Theatre, the cast of “Springsteen on Broadway” — Bruce and, for two songs, singer/wife Patti Scialfa — will give their final performance. But the following night, fans can see the premiere of a Netflix special of the show, which was announced back in July. A trailer for the film arrived this morning, which you can watch below; an album of the show will be released on December 14.

In its preview-week review, Variety wrote, “Having reached virtually every mountaintop a rock star can, at 68 the workaholic singer-songwriter is embarking on another challenge, and the scripted nature and relatively rigid format of this four-month-long run are new disciplines for a man who famously switches up his setlists and speechifying on a nightly basis. The opening ‘Growin’ Up’ is followed by ‘My Hometown,’ which is followed by ‘My Father’s...

‘Springsteen On Broadway’ Album Release Set; Soundtrack To Netflix Special Will Include Story & Song
A two-cd Springsteen On Broadway soundtrack will be released Dec. 14, two days before the Netflix launch of a filmed performance of the sold-out Broadway show.

Springsteen has released a single from the soundtrack, “Land of Hope and Dreams,” on his YouTube site. Listen to the audio track above, and see the full track list below.

With lyrics including “Tomorrow there’ll be sunshine/And all this darkness past,” the song, as NPR noted today, is often performed by Springsteen at benefit concerts and political rallies, including 2012 campaign stops for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama. The release of “Land of Hope and Dreams” today comes four days before the mid-term elections.

The soundtrack to the Netflix special drops the day before the autobiographical Springsteen On Broadway closes its run at the Walter Kerr Theatre after what will be 236 performances. Previews began Oct. 3, 2017, with the official opening nine days later.

MTV VMAs: Kevin Hart Tells Donald Trump To “Suck It”
Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart wasted no time getting political onstage last night at the MTV Video Music Awards as he and Tiffany Haddish took the stage as the night’s first presenters, reassuring the crowd that they can feel to express themselves.

“But at this game, you guys can kneel. You can do whatever the hell you want. There’s no old white man that can stop you,” Hart said, alluding to Trump and his criticism over NFL players “taking a knee” as a form of protest during the National Anthem. In response to Trump’s repeated slamming of NFL players who refuse to stand during the anthem, the NFL adopted a policy that players would be fined if they did so. The league, along with the NFL Players Association later suspended the rule, pending further review.

Hart got in a second jab at Trump a bit later, saying, “You never know...

New Map Traces Springsteen’s New Jersey
Bruce Springsteen has written so many songs referencing his home state, it sometimes seems like all of New Jersey is a matrix of E Street memories. Graphic artist Daniel Cassaro recently set out to prove the point, drawing up a map of the state that features more than 200 references to Springsteen's lyrics along its meticulously sketched backstreets and Badlands, from The River to a drawn-out Darkness at the Edge of Town. The "Springstreets" map is available for purchase on Young Jerks Be Free Tonight (via Paste Magazine ).

Check out artifacts from Bruce Springsteen's four-decade career.
