Witchboard marks the return to the genre for Chuck Russell, an ’80s horror cult hero, after writing Dreamscape and directing The Blob and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. In a varied career that includes The Mask, which made Jim Carrey a household name, it’s almost as if Russell has been in career purgatory, finding work with John Travolta in video-on-demand fare.
His latest is a remake of the 1984 film of the same name, reportedly a favorite of his that he always wanted to make. Witchboard is a scattershot yet wholly entertaining horror outing that throws out structure for all-out horror madness, complete with over-the-top, campy performances for some scary goodness that will undoubtedly leave fans of the genre satisfied.
