Trivia

The West Side Waltz

Edit
The roles created on film by Shirley MacLaine and Liza Minnelli were originated on Broadway by Katharine Hepburn and Dorothy Loudon.
The original Broadway production of "The West Side Waltz" opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York on November 19, 1981, ran for 126 performances and received a Best Actress Tony Award nomination for Katharine Hepburn. The stage play was written by Ernest Thompson who also adapted his work for the filmed production.
The original Broadway production, which opened November 1981, had only five characters. The story was significantly expanded for the film version to include the bag lady, the boy friend, the coffee shop owner, the neighbors, etc.
Ernest Thompson, who wrote the original play, wrote the screenplay and directed this version. He also appears as the Juilliard dean.
Two Seinfeld (1989) co-stars appear: Danny Woodburn as the mechanic and Estelle Harris as a neighbor.
