Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you! Please bear witness to today’s Gunslingers trailer and revel in the action and unseriousness of this delightful preview for what looks like an off-the-wall Western starring Nicolas Cage, Heather Graham and Stephen Dorff.
Today’s Gunslingers trailer is the shot in the arm I needed. I’m a massive Nicolas Cage fan, especially when he’s most unhinged. Don’t get me wrong, I love his dramatic roles in films like Pig, Leaving Las Vegas, and Dream Scenario. However, allowing Cage to be at his Cageiest is a cure for what ails ya.
Brian Skiba directs Gunslingers from his own script. The story unfolds in Redemption, where reformed gunslinger Thomas Keller (Dorff) and a mad genius, Ben (Cage), are guided by a spiritual leader named Jericho toward vindication. While wrestling with his inner demons, Keller runs afoul of the Five Points Gang. The confrontation forces Keller’s hand,...

When the sci-fi action flick “Virtuosity” was first released in the summer of 1995, it opened to mixed reviews and modest box office. It was the kind of mid-range studio programmer (it came from Paramount under the Sherry Lansing regime) that came out with dependable frequency in those days, a movie enjoyed by some but quickly forgotten by most before it left theaters to make way for other genre films like “Desperado,” “The Tie That Binds,” and “Hackers.”
Looking back now, studio slates like the ones Lansing oversaw — release schedules that made room for an abundance of medium-budget comedies (“Clueless”), thrillers (“Primal Fear”), sci-fi films (“The Relic”) and adult dramas (“Nobody’s Fool”) in between large-scale blockbusters like “Mission: Impossible,” “Braveheart,” and “Titanic” — seem far more varied and artistically fruitful than they did at the time, when we never knew such range was in any danger of disappearing. Years before Academy Award-winning actors Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe went head-to-head in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, the two would first face off in the cult classic, techno-thriller Virtuosity. Whereas, in American Gangster, Washington played the drug kingpin and Crowe was the hardened cop on his tail, in Virtuosity, Crowe was a Joker-esque digital amalgamation of serial killers, while Washington plays the cop that hunts him down. Blu-ray.com reports on the new 4K Blu-ray of the movie that will be distributed by Vinegar Syndrome sometime this month.
The description reads,
“The near future: A virtual reality company is completing the development of a highly sophisticated training simulator designed to give police a taste of how to handle the dangers they might encounter in the field while tracking and apprehending criminals. In order to perfect this state-of-the-art technology, prisoners are selected based on their skills and toughness and forced to serve as test subjects.

Denzel Washington's career is mostly a model of consistency. Once he officially broke through with his Academy Award-nominated performance as South African activist Steve Biko in "Cry Freedom," he deftly alternated between prestige roles and strictly commercial parts. There were missteps, but you can at least understand why he signed on to a buddy comedy like "Heart Condition;" he hadn't won his Oscar for "Glory" just yet, and the opportunity to act opposite a tremendously talented performer like Bob Hoskins surely looked appealing in theory. The movie is dreadful, but neither Washington nor Hoskins phone it in.
And yet there was a sense among some in 1992 that Washington's brilliantly multifaceted performance in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" would put an end to such frivolities as "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." It's intriguing to consider what might've happened had the Academy not determined that '92 was the year to honor the...

Before audiences worldwide were entertained by Russell Crowe's performance as Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, the role nearly went to another Max—Mel Gibson, the star of Mad Max.
According to THR, the Gladiator production team initially considered Mel Gibson for the lead role, given his status as a huge star and his acclaimed performance in Braveheart. Both Braveheart and Gladiator are epic period films centered on warrior leaders, making Gibson a natural choice at the time. The role of Maximus ultimately went to Crowe, who, prior to being cast, was best known for his performances in L.A. Confidential and as the villain in the Denzel Washington film Virtuosity.

Artificial intelligence used to be a longtime science fiction fan's dream, and, to borrow a Mitch Hedberg joke, it still is, too. In fiction, AI occupies a realm of possibility that renews our questions about who and what we are, and dances with theologic philosophies about whether or not we can create synthetic life worthy of a soul. The reality of AI remains a far cry from those visions of Fritz Lang and Isaac Asimov, incapable of independent creation, emotion, or thought.
Generative AI remains a disappointment because it's a fancy PR dodge on the level of the grapeless Grape-Nuts. There's no intelligence in ChatGPT or its "artistic" cousins, and definitely no sentience; it's a Chinese Room experiment with dressed up outputs. But real AI isn't all bad, either. Machine learning is helping doctors hunt down cancer in new ways. Yet, the fiction of AI continues to call to us,...

King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on Denzel! But maybe The Bone Collector does…Denzel Washington has had one hell of a movie career, breaking out in the ‘80s and soon becoming one of the few Black actors to win an Academy Award at the time. But before he would become the first Black actor to win two Oscars, Denzel Washington had to go through some true crap. But that’s not us talking, that’s Denzel himself.
Speaking with The Times, Denzel Washington admitted that he spent a lot of the ‘90s making movies for the paycheck. “After Malcolm X I made some real clunkers. Look them up — I won’t say their names…They are all in the 1990s. But I was earning. I had responsibilities.” Denzel may not want to list any particular titles, but we can imagine the list includes The Pelican Brief, Virtuosity, Fallen, The Bone Collector,...

The early 90s were full of blockbusters that explored the dangers of evolving technology. 1991s Terminator 2: Judgment Day dealt with the threat of A.I. against humanity. Additionally, 1992s The Lawnmower Man explored how a virtual reality simulation could manipulate the human mind. The latter films director, Brett Leonard, took the VR theme and capitalized on T2s success with his 1995 sci-fi thriller Virtuosity starring Oscar-winner Denzel Washington.

In the chronicles of American cinema, Denzel Washington (who we recently interviewed) stands as a singular force. His body of work represents not just artistic excellence but a fundamental reshaping of what stardom means in Hollywood. Each performance bears his unmistakable signature – a blend of intellectual rigor and emotional truth that has become the gold standard for screen acting.
Washington’s command of his acting instrument sets him apart from his contemporaries. His approach to character isn’t about transformation so much as revelation – peeling back layers to expose fundamental truths about human nature. Where other actors might rely on external changes, Washington works from the inside out, building characters whose inner lives radiate through every gesture, every measured pause, every calculated glance.

Denzel Washington is sharing his thoughts on the current political landscape in the United States.
The two-time Oscar-winning actor, who stars in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator II, was recently asked about the 2024 presidential election, which saw Donald Trump defeat Kamala Harris earlier this month. During his interview with The Sunday Times, editor Jonathan Dean also noted a specific line in Gladiator II that felt timely given the election: “Empires fall, so do emperors.”
“You know, it’s so easy to stand outside America and say this and that,” Washington, 69, said in response. “Turn around, you know? Pick a country. Any one.”
“But listen,” the Training Day actor continued. “It’s all politics. All promises unkept. And now with the information age the way it is — if anything — left, right, whatever had better learn how to use those tools to manipulate the people. There was a great line in the first movie I did,...

Early on in Denzel Washington's brilliant career, he gave critics a preview of how he was going to play the movie star game going forward -- and they weren't pleased. In between making acclaimed dramas like "Cry Freedom," "Glory," and "Mississippi Masala," Washington cut loose and sought to build up some box office cred in formulaic action movies like "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." Reviewers who viewed Washington as a major star in the making were disappointed with, if not aghast at, his choices. What a colossal waste of the man's time and talent, they reasoned, to run around in his boxer shorts after John Lithgow in full glazed ham mode. Then he'd go and make "Malcolm X," and everyone would hush up until a frivolity like "Virtuosity" dropped.

Through the decades, Denzel Washington has become one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. The actor has continually redefined what it means to be a leading man and has been known for his commanding presence, and incredible talent.
However, despite the 69-year-old’s impressive range of characters across genres, the industry has seen him through a narrow lens, casting him in roles that emphasize authority, intensity, or even moral complexity.

This perception, however, was challenged by his performance in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day. In the film, Washington transformed into a seasoned but ruthlessly corrupt detective with unparalleled finesse and proved that he can’t be typecast.

Denzel Washington has had more than a few great films, but his work in his only supernatural thriller has the makings of one of the creepiest experiences to come out of Hollywood. Despite not gaining much critical or commercial traction, the film has become somewhat of a cult classic.

New to Netflix on October 14, 2024, Unhinged paints Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe in a flattering villainous light fans want to see more of in the future. The 2020 road rage thriller follows Man aka Tom Cooper (Crowe), a seething motorist who goes off the rails after being confronted at a stop light by Rachel (Caren Pistorius), a single mother fired for running late for work.
Despite Unhinged receiving mediocre marks from critics and general moviegoers, Crowe's smoldering intensity proves he needs to play more fictional bad guys on the big and small screen. While Crowe may always be associated with his Oscar-nominated protagonists in The Insider, Gladiator, and A Beautiful Mind, Unhinged joins a small subset of villainous movie performances Crowe has given that showcase his acting craft and underscore his versatility as an A-lister who can credibly portray heroes and villains alike.

Denzel Washington is one of our most accomplished actors who has worked alongside other legendary A-listers, but, sadly, we missed out on seeing him reunite with one of them, Morgan Freeman, when he turned down Se7en in the '90s. Denzel Washington has earned his title in Hollywood as one of the best actors of his generation. Over four decades, Washington has shown his incredible range as an actor, and Denzel Washington's upcoming movies will be just as powerful. Still, even he has had some missed opportunities over the years.
A prominent project Washington turned down was David Fincher's 1995 classic thriller Se7en, which followed two detectives hunting a serial killer who commits murders based on the seven deadly sins. Washington ultimately declined because he thought the script was too dark and demonic. Although he later regretted his decision, 1995 was still an eventful year for Washington, with three films released: Crimson Tide,...

In the 1990s -- back when the internet was new and smartphones didn't yet exist -- there was a healthy amount of skepticism about new technology. "Cyberspace," a term coined by sci-fi author William Gibson, was a terrifying new concept for some, and many Luddites feared it. A stationary network of millions of unknown users? And they're all tapping into the same ineffable, electric realm of information that's Not inside my personal computer? It's like someone peeled back a layer of reality and revealed a whole new dimension. Indeed, Brett Leonard's 1992 sci-fi/horror film "The Lawnmower Man" refers to the 'net in those exact terms. That film also posited that Virtual Reality would come to replace real reality.

There was never a time when Denzel Washington wasn't on a hot streak. Not only does Washington have a talent for picking interesting or unique projects, but he also has the acting acumen to back up whatever he selects. Even when he's decided to make a mainstream genre thriller, clunky crime flick, or brutal, brainless actioner, he is always present, bringing nuance and texture to his performances. It also helps that Washington has become a go-to collaborator for multiple talented directors, having worked with Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua, Carl Franklin, Jonathan Demme, and both Ridley and Tony Scott multiple times apiece. He has also taken it upon himself to produce 10 movies based on August Wilson's plays, two of which have already been made.

But even a powerhouse performer like Washington is not immune to critics, with one of his earlier, much-maligned, efforts now landing on the streaming service Prime Video. While the movie was panned at the time, and holds a rating of just 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, knowing what we know about the actors now, and the plots use of Ai, was it perhaps misunderstood?

Denzel Washington is one of the biggest stars in the world, but his 1995 film Virtuosity was a box office bomb. Virtuosity underperformed due to its lack of originality among similar cyberpunk movies. The film's best asset is its cast; particularly, Russell Crowe's unhinged performance is worth watching.
In an era where the movie star concept seems to be losing value (outside of Tom Cruise), one of the few actors who can arguably still boast that title is Denzel Washington. Hes had one of the most impressive resumes of the last few decades, boasting two Academy Awards to his name and helping give street cred to the likes of Spike Lee and Tony Scott. Washington has worked in seemingly every genre under the sun, able to be equally successful as an action star and a dramatic actor, and it genuinely feels like theres no part he cant play with anything less than total commitment.

Denzel Washington has died in 16 films throughout his career, with 29% of his movies featuring his character's death. Washington's first on-screen death was in 1987's Cry Freedom, and his most recent was in 2021's The Tragedy of Macbeth. Despite numerous on-screen deaths, Washington remains a versatile and iconic actor with over 50 films in his impressive filmography.
In Denzel Washingtons many film roles, his characters tend to die much more often than viewers might think. Most of the deaths are on-screen and violent, while a few others happen passively or naturally off-screen. There's no doubt that Denzel Washington is one of Hollywood's most versatile and varied performers. His first movie role was in Norman Jewisons 1984 film A Soldier's Story.

Russell Crowe, Academy Award-winning actor and all-around Generally Very Aussie Guy, has never turned in a bad performance. Some of his best films are benchmarks for who we are in modern pop culture, from his relentless turn as Maximus in Gladiator to his tactical and charming Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander. The rest, well, they’re somebody’s favorite, anyway. And then, there’s his early ride to Hollywood as Sid 6.7 in 1995’s Virtuosity, a brain-dead summer sci-fi flick that even Denzel Washington cannot help but sleepwalk through.

Curtis Hanson's crime drama "L.A. Confidential," based on the novel by James Ellroy, takes place in 1953 right after real-life crime boss Mickey Cohen had been arrested, creating a power vacuum in L.A.'s underworld. A mysterious and brutal massacre at a local diner -- a massacre that took the lives of several allegedly corrupt cops -- reveals a series of equally mysterious plots throughout the city, each of them being individually investigated by one of three cops. There is Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce), the by-the-book Boy Scout no one likes. There is Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey), the celebrity cop who offer consultations to the hottest cop show on TV. And there is Bud White (Russell Crowe), a human fist who instinctively beats up criminals who piss him off or who dare to threaten women in his presence.

Denzel Washington's move into action films began with Virtuosity, which featured him chasing down an unstoppable killer played by Russell Crowe. Virtuosity help fill the void left by the Terminator franchise, with Sid's ability to regenerate and AI themes borrowing from Cameron's sci-fi saga. The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco made her big-screen debut in Virtuosity as Karin, the daughter of Kelly Lynch's character.
A 1995 cyberpunk action movie fronted by Denzel Washington also marked Kaley Cuoco's big-screen debut. While some movie stars start their careers with action movies before moving into other genres, Denzel took the opposite route. Denzel Washington's movie CV is filled with stirring dramas and taut thrillers like Training Day, but in the early stages of his career, he largely avoided traditional action roles. Crimson Tide is a psychological thriller at its core, and while 1991's Ricochet is a secret Die Hard spinoff, it too largely eschews action.

The Little Things features Denzel Washington in his 13th law enforcement role, showcasing his versatile talent in crime dramas over the years. Passing on the role of Detective Mills in Se7en is one of Denzel Washington's biggest career regrets to this day. Washington's incredible range allows him to choose his own roles, but missing out on Se7en was a big loss due to its huge success. Welcome to the digital den of dread, where horror meets headsets in a mind-melting mashup! In the realm of horror movies set in virtual reality, the bizarre becomes the baseline, and the uncanny is commonplace. Imagine strapping on a VR headset, only to find yourself in a world where every turn brings a new terror, and every pixel could be your doom. That’s the twisted reality of VR horror films, a genre that blends the eerie with the electronic in ways you’ve got to see to disbelieve.
From the cybernetic showdowns of Virtuosity to the cerebral labyrinths of eXistenZ, these films are not just about scares; they’re about making you second-guess every digital decision you’ve ever made. Picture this: one minute, you’re a sofa-bound spectator; the next, you’re lost in a labyrinthine VR game fighting for your virtual life, and maybe your real one too.

Update: In celebration of Sam Raimi’s The Quick and the Dead being added to The Criterion Channel as part of this month’s Women of the West series, Sharon Stone is clarifying her involvement in some of the casting. The popular story is that Stone paid the salaries of her then-unknown co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, but on Instagram she’s saying that’s only partially true with her giving credit to producer Mike Medavoy for at least part of the casting.
“Yes, I paid @leonardodicaprio’s salary out of mine. No I didn’t pay @russellcrowe’s, but I did ask for the film to be delayed two weeks so we could get him here from Australia, and our producer @mikemedavoyup agreed to the delay. And to cover those expenses.”
Whatever the case, Stone certainly helped both actors get a foothold, with DiCaprio following The Quick and the Dead...

Denzel Washington has acted in 16 action movies throughout his career. Some of Washington's action flicks, like Virtuosity and The Siege, fall short due to weak scripts and lack of substance. However, Washington's best action movies are some of the greatest works of his career, delivering high emotional stakes and meaningful dialogue.
Denzel Washington has acted in 16 action movies over the course of his distinguished career, making it worthwhile to rank his many action flicks from worst to best. Washington is one of the premier actors working today, winning two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes across his 40-year career as an actor. He has earned several notable lifetime achievement awards, and in 2020 he was named the greatest actor of the 21st century by the New York Times.
Washington has acted in a wide variety of films throughout his career, but the genre he probably acts in the most is action.

Denzel Washington's career spans nearly five decades and includes films, shows, voice work, narration, and theater, but he has largely preferred movies and has over 50 feature-length titles listed on his resume. Despite his impressive career and numerous accolades, not all of Washington's movies have aged well or received critical acclaim. Some notable disappointments include Heart Condition, Virtuosity, and Carbon Copy. While Washington has had his fair share of less successful films, he has also starred in cult classics and well-regarded movies, such as The Book of Eli, The Preacher's Wife, and The Mighty Quinn, which showcase his versatility as an actor.
A star of Denzel Washington's caliber needs no introduction; everyone has likely seen at least one of his movies–some, however, have definitely aged better than others. Having taken up acting at the age of 23, Washington had to suffer through a few cinematic disasters until better and richer roles came his way.

Denzel Washington shines in The Equalizer franchise with both action-packed scenes and powerful dramatic moments. Washington's monologue about a troubled Russian orphan is a standout scene, showcasing his incredible performance skills. McCall's encounters with the Russian mafia are intense and show McCall's ability to take down enemies with lethal precision.
Warning: Major spoilers for The Equalizer 3 below!Denzel Washington has had some great movies throughout The Equalizer movie franchise, and here are his best scenes ranked. When it comes to action movie stars, Washington is rarely - if ever - lumped in among that group. Of course, he's best remembered for his dramatic work, but a quick scan of his CV reveals a lot of action roles, including Virtuosity, Safe House, The Book of Eli and many more. With The Equalizer movies, he finally found a franchise too, as Robert McCall is the only film character he's ever played more than once.

A new episode of the Black Sheep video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie you might expect to be really popular, since it’s a sci-fi action thriller that pits Denzel Washington against Russell Crowe. It’s not popular… but maybe it should be. The movie is Virtuosity (watch it Here), and you can hear all about its virtues by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Brett Leonard from a screenplay written by Eric Bernt, Virtuosity has the following synopsis: A former cop who has been imprisoned for murdering the psychopath who killed his family, Parker Barnes is recruited to test out a new virtual-reality program where the goal is to apprehend a computer-generated being called Sid 6.7, who has been modeled on hundreds of deranged criminals. Movie robots are inherently cool. They're brought to life by the best special effects available, like Phil Tippett's amazing stop-motion, or puppeteers inside detailed suits. From Kenny Baker within Lucasfilm's famous R2-D2 bucket to the pair of stuntmen, Frankie Carpenter and Frankie Darro, who brought Robby the Robot to life, there are a bunch of ways to pull it off.
But most movie robots require bearing a couple of things in mind. One is if the audience is supposed to empathize with them, which means comforting, funny voices — Tars, for example — or human-ish eyes, like Optimus Prime. The other is how close are they to falling into the uncanny valley. We're wired to notice when something doesn't look quite right, and some movie robots benefit from using that to scare the hell out of us. There's another level of robot movie power to discuss, and that's how...

When I was nine years old, my dad told my mom that he was taking me out for ice cream. What he didn’t tell her was that — on our way to Baskin Robbins — we’d be making a pit stop at “Jurassic Park,” a movie that she had forbidden me from seeing on account of the fact that it would obviously scare the living shit out of her ultra-neurotic son. This was in June 1993, about three months after a Terry Brooks fantasy novel had terrified me into thinking that the actual Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were going to ride across our front lawn at night; in my defense, the suburbs of Connecticut seemed like a perfectly natural place for them to begin their attack.

During 12 seasons on “The Big Bang Theory,” Kaley Cuoco became one of the highest-paid actors in the history of television — but for her 6.4 million followers on Instagram, she gives away content for free. There, on the day of the Golden Globe nominations, she posted a video of herself watching the announcement on her phone. As she hears her name in the actress in a musical or comedy category for “The Flight Attendant,” she turns to her husband, Karl Cook, her face collapsing with happiness, and starts to sob. Along with a second video when she learns that “The Flight Attendant” was also nominated — just Cuoco screaming, really — it was a moment so pure it went viral.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Welcome to this week’s All Elite Wrestling: Dark review, right here on Nerdly.
