Star Trek's Species 8472 Explained
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Scorpion, Part I" (May 21, 1997) the USS Voyager knows they are approaching an area of the galaxy that is just lousy with the Borg. The ship is about to fly straight through Borg territory and will constantly be at risk of assimilation. The immediate future looks terrifying. And just as the ship passes into Borg space, giant Borg cubes fly directly toward them. Surprisingly, though, the cubes all fly straight past the Voyager. It seems the Borg were fleeing something even more terrifying behind them. The Voyager then sees a mysterious spacecraft, seemingly made of biological material, in pursuit. This bioship is easily able to attack and destroy 15 Borg vessels.

The bioship belongs to a species that the Borg refer to as Species 8472 in their database. Species 8472 are powerful, psychic creatures that hail from a parallel dimension completely filled with fluid.

Dante’s Peak (1997) – What Happened to This Disaster Movie?
Image
Do you ever go back and watch an awesome 90s film only to have a dark realization come over you that films will never be made that way again? That most of what you’re witnessing on screen would be a digitized shell of itself today? Today’s movie is one of those. A film that was released surrounded by such a golden age of special effects and practical filmmaking feats, we couldn’t possibly have appreciated it appropriately at the time. Not only was this disaster movie a spectacle to witness on the big screen, but scientifically responsible enough to be shown in science classes decades later. Something you’ll never say about Armageddon. Unless your science teacher had a drinking problem. Dante’s Peak was not only up against an audience on the cusp of disaster fatigue after the successful releases of Twister, Outbreak, and Independence Day. It was...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Showrunner Confirms Whether The Vezda Will Return [Exclusive]
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 4, "Through the Lens of Time."

The latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Through the Lens of Time," sees the discovery of an impossibly ancient temple located underneath a mountain. Although its age is mind-boggling, the technology embedded in the temple still works. In order to gain access through its nostril-like entryway, Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) has to insert her hand into a blood-extracting device. Ancient temples, ineffable technologies, and blood offerings all give "Through the Lens of Time" a Lovecraftian feeling.

Inside, the crew find a series of small glowing glass orbs that contain something they can't identify. One of the orbs ends up bursting open, sending shards of glass -- and a mysterious energy of some kind -- flying into the eyeballs of Ensign Gamble (Chris Myers). Ensign Gamble's eyeballs are destroyed, but something...

The Wild, Big Swings of Dario Argento’s ‘Phenomena’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
We kicked off the summer with a look at Steven Spielberg’s classic creature feature Jaws (listen) before checking out our first Jean Rollin lesbian “vampire” movie Fascination (listen), as well as the female dominated slasher The Slumber Party Massacre (listen). Now it’s time to revisit Dario Argento (for only the second time on the pod!) with a first time look at 1985’s Phenomena.

The film stars Jennifer Connelly as Jennifer Corvino, an American girl sent to a Swiss boarding school. The girl has a mysterious ability: she can communicate with insects and even get them to do her bidding. This proves to be a wildly helpful skill when Jennifer finds herself targeted by a killer who preys on young women, including her roommate Sophie.

But who is committing the murders and why? Could it be the disabled local entomologist, Professor John McGregor (Donald Pleasence) or his chimp, Inga?...

7 Best Michael Madsen Movie Performances
Image
Often cited as one of the defining “character actors” of the post-’90s wave of crime cinema, Michael Madsen was a truly electrifying performer who had the ability to elevate any project he was in, regardless of its quality or fame. Perhaps the ill-fated remake of the Steve McQueen film “The Getaway” or the James Bond film “Die Another Day” wouldn’t be listed as cinematic classics. Still, Madsen brought a sense of specificity and menace to his performances that made them far more entertaining than they had any right to be.

Although his credits included dozens of B-movies, many of which could be described as “guilty pleasures,” Madsen also appeared in some of the most defining and acclaimed films of their era. While he was best known for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, a filmmaker whose love for exploitation thrillers and classic cinema made him an excellent partner, Madsen...

In memoriam: Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen
Image
Actor Michael Madsen, whose iconic performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs made him a star, has passed away.

Michael Madsen has passed away at the age of 67, leaving behind a memorable body of work. He leaves behind some exquisite performances as a gravel-voiced tough guy, sometimes with a sensitive side and sometimes less so. According to The Guardian, the actor was found dead at his home in Malibu from cardiac arrest.

After some TV work and smaller roles in such films as WarGames and The Doors, Madsen shot to fame as the psychopathic Mr Blonde in 1992’s Reservoir Dogs. His ice-cold killer, and his violence-filled dance number, immediately made him into one of cinema’s great villains. It was the film that launched both his and writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s careers.

Madsen went on to add some of his most memorable performances in further collaborations with Tarantino, including including the Kill Bill movies,...

Michael Madsen, Star Of Reservoir Dogs And Kill Bill, Dies Aged 67
Image
Michael Madsen, longtime collaborator of Quentin Tarantino and star of over 300 films and TV shows — including the likes of Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and Donnie Brasco — has sadly died at the age of 67. As confirmed to THR by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the iconic actor was found unresponsive at his Malibu home this morning following a suspected cardiac arrest.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on 25 September, 1957 to a war veteran-turned-firefighter father and an Emmy award winning mother, Michael Madsen spent much of his childhood moving from place to place due to his mum's work, getting into scrapes and testing authority as the perpetual new kid in class. Amid a childhood the man himself once described to The LA Times as "chaotic and diversified" however, young Michael found artistic inspiration on the box, devouring classics starring the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and Kirk Douglas — a trio of actors...

Michael Madsen, Iconic Tough-Guy Actor and Tarantino Favorite, Dies at 67

Michael Madsen, one of the greatest tough-guy actors of his generation and a favorite collaborator of director Quentin Tarantino, has passed away. According to THR, the 67-year-old actor was found unresponsive at his Malibu home following a 911 call. Cardiac arrest is suspected.

Madsen was a cinematic legend, especially for his work with Tarantino. He was perhaps the director’s most beloved recurring actor, appearing in Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, The Hateful Eight, and most recently in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Even before his breakout role in Reservoir Dogs, Madsen had made a name for himself as a reliable character actor, with early appearances in WarGames (including a memorable opening scene opposite the late John Spencer), The Natural, and Thelma & Louise, in which he played Susan Sarandon’s quiet, soft-spoken love interest.

It was, of course, his role as the sadistic Vic Vega—aka Mr. Blonde—in Reservoir Dogs...

Natasha Henstridge in La Mutante (1995)
Species | 1990s horror is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in the UK
Natasha Henstridge in La Mutante (1995)
The 1995 hit Species is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical media release in the UK this June. More details here.

Just recently on this very site, we were digging into the behind the scenes story of 1995’s hit Species. Starring Natasha Henstridge Sir Ben Kingsley and Michael Madsen – and it was Henstridge’s feature debut – the film also posted some superb creature designs from the legendary H R Giger. Roger Donaldson directed, and MGM had both a hit movie, and a chance to spit out a sequel or two.

The original film though has now been selected for a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release, with 88 Films picking up the UK rights to the movie. It’s going to be releasing a deluxe dual format release – that thus includes a Blu-ray as well – on 23rd June 2025. It’s unclear as of yet whether there’s going to be much in...

Species | The evolution and surprising impact of a 1990s monster movie
Image
Originally conceived as a sci-fi thriller with philosophical undertones, Species emerged as one of 1995’s weirdest monster movies.

The early 90s digital effects revolution birthed many monsters. Sam Neill and Laura Dern were menaced by velociraptors in the ground-breaking Jurassic Park in 1993. Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller were chased around a museum by a rhino-like behemoth in The Relic (1996). Samuel L Jackson was rudely interrupted mid-monologue by an intellectual shark in Deep Blue Sea (1999).

Few monster movies were as eclectically cast or as zany as 1995’s Species. Somehow, director Roger Donaldson managed to convince such acting greats as Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker and Alfred Molina to appear as members of a specialist team on the trail of a randy human-alien hybrid monster (Natasha Henstridge) seducing assorted men in Los Angeles.

It’s all delightful B-movie hokum, even if the film’s classier elements – the quality cast, the design of...

‘Virus’ – Revisiting the Comic, the Novel, and the Movie Jamie Lee Curtis Calls “Unbelievably Bad”
Image
The movie Virus did not officially scuttle across screens until 1999, but its biomechanical horrors first sprang to life a bit earlier. The road to screen adaptation was not straightforward for Navy Seal turned writer Chuck Pfarrer; he first pitched his high concept to Universal Pictures, only to then have it land at Dark Horse Comics. Upon the series’ success, Pfarrer tried his luck again with Universal. This time, though, producer Gale Anne Hurd was there to help get Virus optioned as well as find a potential director.

It was in 1995 that Universal first approached John Bruno about helming Virus. Initially, the visual effects artist was hesitant about directing a feature, and Pfarrer’s screenplay was a major factor in that uncertainty; he found it to be too dense and complicated for his liking. Yet after a talk with colleague and friend James Cameron, Bruno eventually accepted the offer, providing that...

'Species' Becomes #4 Movie on Tubi This Week
Image
The 90s were the salad days for sci-fi horror popcorn flicks. It was a time when wild B-movies got A-movie budgets and brought the visuals and campy excess of Roger Corman to the mainstream. One of the divisive films of that time is Species - a serviceable and sometimes maligned creature feature - currently #4 on Tubi's charts. The cheesy exploitation film is not without its flaws, but audiences are finding a lot to enjoy, as the once deep cable mainstay finds new life on streaming.

Species begins with a fun premise - a decoded alien message from space gives a team of unscrupulous scientists instructions on how to splice human and alien DNA. Because all scientists in movies have maxed out stats in ingenuity but zero foresight, they give life to Sil, an alien-human hybrid that is hellbent on reproducing and escapes her laboratory prison. The result is a...

Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #25!

Although Star Trek fans believe the galaxy is at peace with Species 8472, the franchise just confirmed they are still a massive, extinction-level threat. Introduced in Star Trek: Voyagers third season, Species 8472 has the distinction of being the one race even the Borg fearand for good reason. Voyager encountered Species 8472, and Janeway seemingly brokered an agreement, but as revealed in Star Trek #25, she had second thoughts.

Star Trek #25 was written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Liana Kangas. Trapped in Fluidic Space, the Theseus runs afoul of Species 8472. A few of the aliens beam aboard the Theseus, attacking the crew. They are able to fend off the invaders, and Tom Paris tries to keep their spirits high. He mentions safeguarding the crews loved ones. As Species 8472 beams off the ship, one of them ominous says: Love? We have never heard of it.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Welcomes Sohni the Sumatran Tiger
Natasha Henstridge in La Mutante (1995)
Get ready for some exciting news from Disney’s Animal Kingdom! A beautiful Sumatran tiger named Sohni has joined the park, and her arrival represents a significant leap forward in conservation efforts. With only around 400 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild, Sohni is part of the park’s dedication to preserving endangered species through the Species Survival Plan (Ssp).

Sumatran tigers are the smallest of all tiger subspecies, known for their distinctive deep orange fur and closely spaced stripes. They are agile hunters, perfectly adapted to their dense jungle habitats. Unfortunately, the survival of these majestic animals is threatened by poaching and habitat loss, making conservation initiatives like the Ssp crucial.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has welcomed Sohni to her new home on the Maharajah Jungle Trek, an immersive walking trail designed to replicate the natural environment of these incredible big cats. The Jungle Trek allows visitors to encounter exotic animals up close,...

‘Shell’ – Max Minghella Reveals Surprising Cinematic Influences in His “Nostalgic Homage” [Interview]
Image
Director Max Minghella wears his cinematic influences on his sleeves with sophomore feature effort Shell, a body horror dark comedy written by Jack Stanley (The Passenger).

Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) finds herself embarking on a scary new beauty treatment as aging actor Samantha Lake. She quickly befriends Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson), CEO of health & wellness company Shell. When their patients start to go missing, including starlet Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber), Samantha realizes Shell may be protecting a monstrous secret.

The escapist love letter to ’90s cinema leans into dark comedy, but embraces everything from Paul Verhoeven to Soapdish, Species, and Sliver, if that’s any indicator of genre range here. Bloody Disgusting spoke with Minghella, who made his feature directorial debut with 2018’s Teen Spirit, about the genre-bender out of TIFF, where the film had its World Premiere.

The filmmaker revealed more about his influences, but mores o his...

New on Prime Video and Freevee in September 2024: 'A Very Royal Scandal,' 'The Money Game,' More
Image
After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.

Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

But Prime Video will welcome a few new series this month, including the highly publicized...

10 Best Ark: Survival Ascended Aberration New Dinosaurs & Creatures
Image
Aberration Dlc adds challenges with dangerous mutated dinosaurs in an underground chasm map. New creatures like the Bulbdog provide crucial Charged Light for survival in the treacherous environment. Rock Drakes, Reapers, and Basilisks offer unique abilities and tactics for dominating the Aberration landscape.

Ark: Survival Ascended's Aberration Dlc adds a little over a dozen new creatures to experience. Aberration's map is an unforgiving-irradiated underground chasm that challenges players on all fronts. If the environmental effects don't doom the survivors, then the hordes of mutated dinosaurs are just around the corner to finish the job. Luckily, the Dlc includes some handy new gear to help survive the dangers of this broken-down Ark.

Along with the returning dinosaurs, Aberration will include two new additions in the Yi Ling and Cosmo spider. However, the latter does not arrive without controversy. The Cosmo spider not only looks similar to a player-created modded spider but...

‘Cinderella’s Revenge’ Review
Image
Stars: Stephanie Lodge, Lauren Staerck, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis, Darrell Griggs, Natasha Henstridge, Mark Collier, Stephen Staley | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Andy Edwards

Horror versions of fairy tales, such as Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neil, for example, have been around for quite a while. And now the current trend of turning kid’s stories and nursery rhymes into horror films has carried over to them. It makes sense, they’re filled with witches, ghosts and in their original versions tended to be pretty grim and bloody moments such as Cinderella’s stepsisters cutting off their toes to try and get their foot in the glass slipper. And that brings us to Cinderella’s Revenge.

It certainly opens on an appropriately nasty note as Katherine frames her husband for the theft of the king’s jewels and has him killed for the bounty.

Star Trek: Voyagers First Borg Episode Set Up Species 8472
Image
The Star Trek: Voyager episode "Unity" subtly hinted at the existence of Species 8472 through a B'Elanna Torres line. Producer Brannon Braga later confirmed the intentional setup of Species 8472 in "Unity." Voyager's subtly serialized storytelling connected "Unity" to Species 8472 in "Scorpion," showing that the show's reputation for purely episodic storylines is untrue.

Star Trek: Voyager's first Borg episode in season 3 foreshadowed the introduction of Species 8472. Although the Borg were established as originating from the Delta Quadrant, Voyager's cast of characters didn't encounter the classic franchise villains until season 3, episode 17, "Unity." Even then, the crew only ran into a disabled cube and a group of ex-Borg living as a cooperative on a nearby planet. Voyager's first encounter with the Borg in the Delta Quadrant was less than menacing, but "Unity" did provide a setup for the introduction of the Borg's greatest enemy, Species 8472.

Species 8472 were introduced in Voyager's season 3 finale, "Scorpion,...

Dead Star, and other Hr Giger film projects we never got to see
Image
Alien artist Hr Giger was involved in a number of film projects in the 1980s and 90s. We talk to filmmaker William Malone about some amazing films that never happened.

Given just how genre-defining 1979’s Alien was, it’s perhaps surprising that Hr Giger, the Swiss artist who designed the title monster, wasn’t involved in more films. His creations appeared in the likes of Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Species (1995), plus a little-seen German indie comedy horror called Killer Condoms (1996), but none were as high-profile or influential as Alien.

In the wake of that genre-defining space horror, other artists and designers tinkered with Giger’s unforgettable xenomorph in its sequels. Giger wasn’t involved in the making of Aliens, Alien Resurrection or subsequent prequels or spin-offs, and his work for Alien 3 was barely used. Instead, Giger had the curious habit of coming up with concepts and artwork for...

Bad influence by Paul Risker
Lauren Staerck and Natasha Henstridge in Cinderella's Revenge

Natasha Henstridge plays Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in Andy Edwards’ Cinderella’s Revenge. It’s a dark, twisted and blood-soaked take on the classic fairy tale, transforming Cinderella into a violent vigilante out for revenge against her wicked stepsisters.

Speaking with Eye For Film, Henstridge recalls daunting and fond memories of her experience making Species, and the joy of being a devil on the shoulder.

Paul Risker: How did you catch the acting bug?

Natasha Henstridge: Even before school, I was a ham. A lot of actors are very quiet and private people, that are out there in the world exploring through other characters. That was not me - I was the kid who was super-hyper, had a camera in someone's face all the time at Christmas functions, pretending I was a reporter or interviewer, wanting to get the nitty-gritty and understand who they were.

Natasha Henstridge on Species & Her Horror Fairytale Cinderella's Revenge
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Sometimes, living “happily ever after” means embarking on a blood-soaked path of revenge. That’s the case in the horror fairytale Cinderella’s Revenge. Directed by Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers), the film finds Lauren Staerck (Trust) having a helluva time as Rella until her fairy godmother shows up. That would be Natasha Henstridge (Species), who suggests there’s more to life than just nabbing Prince Charming, especially the shady one featured in Edwards’ gritty comedy horror film.

The story thus far: Cinderella’s (Staerck) wicked stepsisters and stepmother are throwing far too much shade. Somehow, our dear maiden winds up at the ball — nice touch having the “carriage” here come in the form of a Tesla — and her eyes twinkle with the prince and all that. But he’s not the charming gent we all remember him to be. Glass slippers appear.

‘Arachnid’ – Revisiting the 2001 Spider Horror Movie Featuring Massive Practical Effects
Image
A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.

In 2000, Brian Yuzna and Julio Fernández launched the Spanish production company Fantastic Factory. The Filmax banner’s objective was to create modestly budgeted genre films for international distribution.

How These Star Trek Villains Wreaked Havoc From DS9 to Picard
Image
The Dominion is a powerful alien empire in Star Trek that challenged the Federation like never before. While the Klingons, Romulans, and Borg evolved over time, the Dominion remained a second-tier villain. Star Trek: Picard's third season saw the Dominion return strong, with a complex plot and characters.

Star Trek has always featured compelling villainous aliens, many of whom have arcs and collective journeys as rich as any individual character. The Klingons, for instance, have gone from the Federation's greatest foes to fierce allies and antiheroes. The Romulan Empire similarly underwent rapid disintegration in the late 24th century and re-unified with their genetic cousins, the Vulcans, in later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. Even the Borg changed over the course of the franchise, as individuals like Seven of Nine escaped the Collective and threats like Species 8472 proved more than they could handle. That dedication to their organic development has...

Cinderella's Revenge Trailer Puts a Horror-Comedy Spin on the Classic Folk Tale
Image
Brand-new photos and an eerie film trailer show off Cinderella's Revenge. Expect twists, turns, sex, and violence in this upgraded horror version of the classic fairy tale. Actress Lauren Staerck stars as Cinderella, with Natasha Henstridge playing a blonde and Californian fairy godmother.

“This ain’t no fairy tale.” The tagline for Cinderella’s Revenge sums up the horror comedy perfectly as the classic story gets a gruesome upgrade this spring. That wicked stepmother and those insufferable stepsisters have pushed poor Cinderella too far. And with a little help from Cinder’s Fairy Godmother, the glass-slipper-wearing heroine is going to paint the town red with their blood.

Andy Edwards directs Cinderella's Revenge, and he promises a horrifying upgrade with many of the same central elements from the original storyline making the film. But there will also be plenty of twists and turns to surprise fans of the source material.

The Only Bones Guest Star To Appear In Every Season
Image
The beloved procedural crime show "Bones" ran for an impressive 12 seasons, continuing the upward TV star trajectory for David Boreanaz after his work on shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," and helping to launch Emily Deschanel to become a household name after a slew of small roles in a handful of TV shows and movies.

As the co-stars of "Bones," Deschanel and Boreanaz naturally appeared in every single episode of the series. And while viewers know guest stars didn't pop up nearly as frequently, some casual watchers may think that some of the more familiar faces might have at least popped up one time per season. But as it turns out, out of all of the guest stars who graced the series from 2005-2017, only one performer managed to make at least one appearance across all 12 seasons: Patricia Belcher, who played Caroline Julian, a federal prosecutor for the U.
