The Other Woman

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: April 12, 2011

Tracy and Hepburn the Definitive Collection I've mentioned this collection twice in the last two weeks in my Sunday What I Watched columns and I know I will be mentioning it again this week after watching Keeper of the Flame. Suffice to say, considering everything releasing this week this nine film collection is my top pick.

For anyone that's seen The Adjustment Bureau and fell in love with the chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, this is a release for you as Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn had a chemistry unlike any other and this set puts it all on display. Now I won't say every film included is a winner, but I will say Hepburn and Tracy make a film hard not to enjoy.

The great thing about this collection is Warner Home Video was able to...

Trailer: Lars Von Trier's Earth-Destroying Melancholia Film
Back in October, we told you that Lars Von Trier (Antichrist, Dogville) was working on a new psychological disaster movie called "Melancholia," starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgaard and Stellan Skarsgaard. Today, we have a trailer for it and you can watch it below. The film is about two sisters (Dunst, Gainsbourg). One of them is melancholic, the other quite normal. The two sisters react completely differently when the end of the world approaches. The disaster is courtesy of another planet that will smash into earth. "There are beautiful pictures [the melancholy sister] is just standing there looking at the planet that comes closer and closer and accepts it," said Von Trier. "The other woman, on the other hand, becomes increasingly panicky." Trailer: If you cannot see the player, click here.

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Twelve
Scream 4

Opens: April 15th 2011

Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven

Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.

Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.

Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Eleven
Prom

Opens: April 29th 2011

Cast: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang

Director: Joe Nussbaum

Summary: Portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events.

Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.

It's all very "The Breakfast Club" meets "10 Things I Hate About...

A New Clip From Natalie Portman’s The Other Woman
To paraphrase Will Ferrell’s Mugatu from Zoolander, “Portman. So hot right now”. She justly grabbed herself a Golden Globe earlier this week for her performance in Black Swan (check out our review here) and was announced today to be up for a BAFTA for the same role. She is back in the blockbuster zone for the first time in a while in this summer’s upcoming Thor, this trailer for Your Highness shows she can deftly handle comedy as well and on top of all of that we have another affecting dramatic performance to look forward to, with The Other Woman.

As we showed with the trailer over Christmas, it is looking like being another hugely impactful role for Portman, which if the trailer is anything to go by, eschews cliché and sentiment and adroitly conveys the frustration and despair of trying (and failing) to connect with a step-child.

Tuesday Poster Round Up
It’s a new year, and the posters are still coming. Let’s have fun and look at a few, shall we?

1. The Green Hornet: Grade F

What else could be said about this poster other than the fact it looks very cheap, and thrown together? It doesn’t look as if there was any attention to detail at all.

This is a good start to the year.

2. Cedar Rapids: Grade C+

The uninhibited joy in Ed Helms’ face is cause for a chuckle, and the sparse background also keeps everything neat and uncluttered.

3. Hall Pass: Grade D

This doesn’t even look like Own Wilson. If his name wasn’t on the poster, I never would have known. Now, that really isn’t a bad thing, the very smoothed out, photoshopped look is.

4. Kutsal Damacana: Grade B-

My love for the goofy irreverence of Bollywood continues to grow with this poster.

Lindsay Lohan
Lohan a suspect in criminal battery case?
Lindsay Lohan
Police are reportedly investigating Lindsay Lohan after the star allegedly assaulted an employee at the Betty Ford Centre. According to Palm Desert Police, Lohan is accused of attacking the staffer after she asked the actress to take a drug test. The worker also apparently scolded Lohan for returning to the facility following her curfew and spending time at a bar, says TMZ. A source close to the star told People that Lohan has denied starting the conflict. Police arrived on the scene close to 1am on December 12. The other woman involved in the tussle is said to be seeking prosecution. "The incident is being investigated as a misdemeanour, not (more)...

Wrath of the Titans, Drive, and Win Win Set Release Dates
We have one big blockbuster release date set, as well as a few for some smaller films, all found on Bom. After the disappointing, but profitable Clash of the Titans, Warner Bros. is springing back with their sequel, Wrath of the Titans. The studio has set a release date of March 30th, 2012. This is the exact time-frame in which its predecessor was released.

Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman is set to helm Wrath of the Titans, with Dan Mazeau, David Johnson, and Green Lantern writer Greg Berlanti as the super team currently working on the script. It was previously rumored that James Franco and Javier Bardem would also join the film. Bardem is looking at the character of Ares, the god of war, while Franco would play Agenor, son of Poseidon. Liam Neeson will reprise his role as Zeus.

Next up are two of my most anticipated films of...

'Love and Other Impossible Pursuits' is Finally Getting Released
It's been two years since we heard about the adaptation of Love and Other Impossible Pursuits starring Natalie Portman and over a year since the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It seemed the film would never see release, but now IFC Films (via The Playlist) has finally set the film for a February 4th theatrical release (though it will likely be a limited engagement). In addition, the adaptation from director Don Roos has bailed on the original title and has since been dubbed The Other Woman, which is probably an attempt to differentiate itself from Love and Other Drugs, another dramatic romance. Read on! Since the film apparently received mostly negative reviews at Tiff, the release is likely positioned to capitalize on all the awards season buzz Portman is generating for her fantastic turn in Black Swan. However, the indie does sound somewhat interesting as the story...

Meryl Streep Could Have Been Sci-Fi Queen Ripley in Alien
Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep came thisclose to stealing the iconic role of Officer Ripley away from her Yale Drama School rival Sigourney Weaver. On the new Blu-ray release of the classic, Alien franchise producer Gordon Carroll says both actresses were in the running. "The first woman was Meryl Streep [but] Meryl's long-time companion [John Cazale] had just died, and I did not feel that she should be asked to come in from the country. [...] The other woman was, of course, Sigourney Weaver." Any chance Meryl would take on Ripley in those Alien prequels? Enh, never mind. [Blastr.com]...

Meryl Streep's lost place in the 'Alien' franchise?
The true treasures of the Charles De Lauzrika Alien franchise documentaries on the new Alien Anthology Blu-ray release prove to be in the offcuts and the additions to the existing versions of the original DVD Anthology docs. There are numerous nuggets for the genuine Alien buff, including an actual look at Richard E. Grant screen-testing on set for the role that Charles Dance won in David Fincher's Alien 3 (with the casting of Paul McGann and Ralph Brown in Alien 3, the producers were only short of Grant and Richard Griffiths for staging Withnail and I in space).

Well, I'll save some of the others for the late review that's coming, but it's interesting also to find out in the offcuts section of the Blu-ray that Meryl Streep was one of only two Broadway actresses that Ridley Scott had been due to see in New York for the role...

Lars Von Trier's Earth-Destorying Melancholia Details
Up until now, we knew very little about Lars Von Trier's (Antichrist, Dogville) upcoming "Melancholia" film except that it is a sci-fi psychological disaster movie about people trying to deal with Earth coming to an end. We now have a few more details. "In 'Melancholia' I start with the end. Because what is interesting is not what happens but how it happens. So we begin by seeing the world being crushed [by another planet], then we can tell the story afterwards," explained the director. The film is about two sisters. One of them is melancholic, the other quite normal. The two sisters are played by Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Earth's Destruction Will Open Lars von Trier's 'Melancholia'
The world will see the end when "Melancholia" just starts, Lars von Trier dished on his upcoming disaster movie. The Danish filmmaker was spilling plot details about the film in a recent interview with Politiken, saying "So we begin by seeing the world being crushed, then we can tell the story afterwards."

"In 'Melancholia' I start with the end. Because what is interesting is not what happens but how it happens!" he explained. "In this way you don't have to sit and form theories about what will happen, but can delve down into some other levels and become interested in the pictures and the universe - that's what I imagine."

von Trier went on by describing the basic difference of his two main characters, who will be portrayed by Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The melancholic sister "is calm as a rock because, in her darkened mind, she...

Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls (1995)
'Showgirls' director + 'Obsessed' writer = most awesomely bad movie since 'Showgirls'?
Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls (1995)
Some people would read the Variety piece announcing that Paul Verhoeven is set to direct Eternal, a script from David Loughery that “centers on a recovering alcoholic who believes that he’s cheated on his wife — only to discover that the other woman is a ghost who is in pursuit of his soul,” and go, “Pass!” But they’re not thinking this through: This is the man that directed Elizabeth Berkley to put ice on her nipples in Showgirls collaborating with the man who outlined the MTV Movie Award-winning fight between Beyoncé and Ali Larter in Obsessed (pictured). It’s going to be awesome.
