Shakespeare Festival in Ukraine Goes On Despite War
Image
According to reporting by The Guardian, a Shakespeare festival in the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk opened with a demonstration, not a play. Hundreds gathered on the theater steps to demand the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war, as the ongoing conflict with Russia cast a shadow over the artistic proceedings. Later that day, the audience experienced Romeo and Juliet in a striking promenade performance staged in an abandoned factory and the crypt-like basement of the theater. One cast member had recently left the production after signing a military contract. Shakespeare’s plays have seen renewed popularity across Ukraine during the war. Kyiv theaters are currently staging King Lear, Othello, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet. Translator and poet Yuri Andrukhovych, who adapted the...

15 Best Konkona Sen Sharma Movie Performances
Image
An Indian actress par excellence, Konkona Sen Sharma, needs no introduction today. She is not a quintessential Indian ‘heroine’; rather, she is a stellar ‘sustained’ actress who can be identified for her groundbreaking filmography and her prolific range of acting. Her performance is defined by her nuanced manner of presence, her piercing gaze, and exemplary portrayal of her characters.

She was ‘discovered’ by the Indian film industry a little after she got into Bengali films. Primarily making appearances in arthouse independent films, Konkona is a well-established name in contemporary parallel cinema. Besides, the uninhibited selection of her films, rife with fierce themes and social issues, has earned her enough laurels in the commercial Indian film industry as well.

Daughter of the filmmaker-actress Aparna Sen, Konkona is the recipient of two National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards. Other than a singular child debut in the film Indira (1983), Konkona Sen Sharma...

‘SNL’ Meets Blt? Lorne Michaels Said to be Adapting Keith McNally’s Memoir
Image
SNL Meets Blt. Is Michaels Adapting McNally’s Memoir?

Looks like Lorne Michaels may have found his next prestige project — and this one comes with steak frites and a side of passive-aggressive Instagram feuding. Sources tell Rambling Reporter that the Saturday Night Live creator has optioned Keith McNally’s dishy new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything, which charts the legendary restaurateur’s rise, fall, stroke, suicide attempt, recovery and general disappointment with humanity. In other words, comedy gold.

McNally, of course, is the onetime Brasserie King of Manhattan — the man who, as The New York Times once put it, “invented downtown” with such ’80s and ’90s hotspots as Odeon and Balthazar. More recently, he’s drawn attention for his unfiltered Instagram account — a kind of running off-off-Broadway one-man show where he’s taken aim at everyone from James Corden (banned from Balthazar in 2022 for alleged omelet-related rudeness) to Jessica Seinfeld...

Broadway 2024-2025 Season And George Clooney’s ‘Good Night, And Good Luck’ Break All-Time Box Office Records
Image
Broadway’s 2024-2025 season is officially the highest-grossing in the industry’s history, with total grosses of $1.89 billion surpassing the previous – and pre-Covid – record-holding 2018-2019 season’s $1.82 billion, according to statistics released today by the Broadway League.

Even accounting for the “leap year” nature of the just-ended season – 2024-2025 was a 53-week season while most seasons, including 2018-2019, are 52 weeks – the just-ended season would still be the new record-holder: The first 52 weeks of the most recent season grossed $1.85 billion.

Attendance, however, lagged a tad behind the previous 2018-2019 record-holder: 14,658,531 compared to 14,768,254. Theater-goers in the just-ended season paid about $5.25 more in average ticket prices – $129.12 compared to $123.87 – which accounts for the lower attendance-higher gross disparity.

“There is so much to celebrate about the 2024-2025 season,” said Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League, in a statement. “Looking back, it was never a given that audiences would return to their seats or that...

Broadway Sees Highest Grossing Season on Record
Image
Broadway’s 2024-2025 season grossed $1.89 billion across all productions, marking the highest season on record and a recovery from the pandemic.

The gross totals are up 23 percent from last season, and, significantly, the numbers also come in above Broadway’s 2018-2019 season, which had held the record for $1.83 billion in gross revenue and had been the benchmark against which Broadway was measuring its post-pandemic recovery. Broadway first overtook the 2018-2019 season grosses in early May.

In the prior two seasons, Broadway grossed $1.54 billion and $1.58 billion respectively. The 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 seasons were both shortened due to the pandemic. The 2024-2025 season began May 20, 2024 and ended May 25, 2025.

Attendance for the 2024-2025 season came in at 14.66 million, below the 14.77 million from the 2018-2019 season, suggesting that increased ticket prices played a part in the higher grosses this past season. Average ticket prices were up 3 percent from last season and up 4 percent from the 2018-2019 season.

These Cannes 2025 Prize Winners Will Inspire Oscar Campaigns
Image
Neon CEO Tom Quinn took no chances this year en route to winning the company’s sixth Cannes Palme d’Or in a row, for Iranian dissident Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident.” He acquired the film just two days before Saturday’s award ceremony. Neon also collected the festival Jury Prize for “Sirât” (shared with Mubi’s recent buy “Sound of Falling”), and two awards for Brazil’s “The Secret Agent” — Best Director (Kleber Mendonça Filho) and Actor (Wagner Moura ).

Neon came out ahead on the acquisitions derby, as Mubi’s starry $23-million pick-up “Die My Love,” from Scottish/British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, came up empty-handed. A Cannes Actress win for Jennifer Lawrence could have fueled an Oscar campaign, but that loss won’t stop Mubi from pursuing that goal. Similarly, although Oliver Hermanus’ muted American drama “History of Sound” won nothing, Focus may still pursue acting...

Apple TV+ Seriously Needs to Rethink their Release Strategy for Denzel Washington’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Image
Denzel Washington’s new movie Highest 2 Lowest is all set for theatrical release, and fans are not happy with its limited 2 week run before it hits 2 Apple TV+. Director Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have collaborated in several films before; this one, probably Washington’s last, needs a bigger theatrical run to honor the brilliant actor’s film journey.

Feels like a disservice to the artistic pedigree of the film, and is a huge misstep by Apple TV+. The movie has already debuted at Cannes 2025 to receive raving reviews and a standing ovation. The movie deserved a victory lap across theatres globally, rather than a discrete pit stop. A movie of this magnitude deserves a full theatrical rollout rather than just streaming credits.

Will Denzel Washington’s Highest 2 Lowest get a theatrical release?

Officially, yes, the movie is getting a theatrical release. It drops in theatres on August 22, 2025, in the USA.

Broadway Box Office: ‘Redwood’ Ends Run With Momentum, Clooney Stays on Top
Image
Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, remained the top grossing show on Broadway last week, bringing in $3.95 million and playing to more than 100 percent capacity at the Winter Garden Theater.

The play announced last week that it plans to stream the show live on CNN on June 7.

As has been the trend, Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, was the second highest grossing show of the week, with $3.2 million and playing to 100 percent capacity. The play commanded the highest average ticket price on Broadway with $384.23, compared to $315.52 at Good Night, and Good Luck, the next highest on the boards.

The top five grossing shows were rounded by Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bill Burr and Bob Odenkirk, with $2.4 million, Wicked with $2.1 million and The Lion King with $1.8 million.

In its closing week, Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, saw its grosses gain momentum, swinging up $200,000 to gross $818,697 and playing to 85 percent capacity.

The Cannes 2025 Films So Far Most Likely to End Up in the Oscar Race
Image
It was moving to watch Denzel Washington lope up to the Lumière stage at Cannes and tear up as he accepted his Honorary Palme d’Or from Cannes veteran Spike Lee Monday night at the “Highest 2 Lowest” premiere. It was a surprise to the actor, as he watched a clip reel that ranged from his four prior roles with Lee to “Philadelphia,” “Flight,” “The Book of Eli,” “The Hurricane,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Fences,” and more.

Festival director Thierry Frémaux knows how to make the most of a Hollywood movie star, who flew into France and out again on his one day off from doing eight sold-out shows a week as Shakespeare’s “Othello” on Broadway. If the man looked weary, it’s understandable. At 70, he’s at the peak of his powers, and if the Oscar gods are smiling, he’ll land his third Oscar (after “Training Day” and...

Spike Lee Says Denzel Washington Should Have Won the Oscar for ‘Malcolm X’: ‘No Disrespect to My Brother Al Pacino’ Though
Image
Spike Lee is calling out a bad call from the Academy more than 30 years later: The auteur, along with most cinephiles, is convinced that Denzel Washington was snubbed for the Best Actor Oscar for “Malcolm X.” Al Pacino instead won over Washington for “Scent of a Woman.”

During the Cannes press conference for Lee’s latest (and allegedly final) collaboration with Washington, “Highest 2 Lowest,” the director compared the Academy’s decision to a poor referee call in basketball, something that Lee also knows all too well about given his status as the patron saint of the Knicks.

“‘Malcolm X,’ what he did with that film was amazing,” Lee said of Washington, as reported by Variety. “And no disrespect to my brother Al Pacino, I love him. But Denzel, in my opinion, should have won.”

Lee continued, “With these awards, it’s like basketball, where the ref blows a call and...

“No fuck ups today!” the director quipped, kicking off his press conference to Highest 2 Lowest, his electrifying new crime thriller that premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The director was referencing his last time in Cannes, when he was president of the 74th Cannes jury, and accidently announced the winner of the Palme d’Or ahead of schedule at the festival’s closing ceremony.

But Cannes has welcomed him back. Highest 2 Lowest was greeted with a wildly enthusiastic response following its unveiling at the Palais on Monday night. The Cannes festival surprised Highest 2 Lowest star Denzel Washington, in town for only a few hours in between Broadway performances of Othello, presenting the two-time Oscar winner, and cinema legend, with an honorary Palme d’Or for his life’s work.

Denzel Washington stars as David King, a...

Denzel Washington Awarded Surprise Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes
Image
Who needs another Oscar nomination when you can get an honorary Palme d’Or? Screen legend Denzel Washington received the surprise career achievement badge from Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux for his amazing contributions to cinema, currently represented on the Croisette in his starring role in Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic “High and Low,” which is screening out of competition at the fest.

Honorary awards are not unheard of, as Robert De Niro received an expected one at the top of this year’s festival, and Frémaux similarly bestowed one upon Tom Cruise in 2022, the last time this distinction was given under wraps.

Video was captured of the event (which you can watch below), where a quite-moved Washington accepts the honor from Frémaux and Lee, his longtime collaborator, who has worked with him in “Mo’ Better Blues,” “He Got Game,” “Inside Man,...

Laurence Olivier movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Laurence Olivier was an Oscar-winning thespian best remembered for his psychologically intense Shakespeare adaptations, both as an actor and a director. Yet his filmography extends well past the Bard's work. Let's take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1907 in Surrey, England, Olivier first came to prominence on the British stage. A series of acclaimed theatrical performances, most notably in Noel Coward's "Private Lives," caught the attention of filmmakers both in the UK and the US.

He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for William Wyler's "Wuthering Heights" (1939), competing the very next year for Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca" (1940). Having firmly established himself as a formidable talent in front of the camera, he stepped behind it to great success with "Henry V", the first of three films he would direct and star in based on the works of William Shakespeare.

2025 Drama League Awards winners announced: Nicole Scherzinger takes Distinguished Performance
Image
Winners of the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced today in a ceremony hosted by Emmy-winning NY1 reporter Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. In a competitive year for theater awards, both Maybe Happy Ending and Sunset Boulevard added important feathers to their caps on their march to the Tony Awards.

Nicole Scherzinger took home the Drama League’s highly coveted Distinguished Performance prize for her radical reinterpretation of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Actors can only win this catch-all performance award once in their careers.

The winner of this award repeats that victory at the Tonys more often than not. Last year, Sarah Paulson won the Drama League before clinching a Tony win for her role in the play Appropriate. Other recent Drama League winners who went on to win a Tony in the same year include Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge!), Bryan Cranston (Network), Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women), Ben Platt...

Broadway Box Office: ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Becomes First Play to Surpass $4M
Image
Good Night and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, brought in $4,003,481.50 on Broadway last week, becoming the first play to surpass $4 million in a single week.

The play also broke its own record, yet again, as the highest grossing play in Broadway history. The milestone came as the production, which is playing the Winter Garden Theater, received five Tony Award nominations, including one for Clooney.

The average ticket price for the production also keeps inching up each week, reaching $319.36 last week, but still below the $367.42 commanded at Othello, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington, which still had the highest average ticket price in the industry, despite being snubbed by the Tony Awards. The production still brought in just over $3 million, as the second highest grossing show in the industry last week, and continued to play to 100 percent capacity.

Glengarry Glen Ross was the third highest grossing show last week, at $2.3 million,...

Denzel Washington's lone franchise in his distinguished career, The Equalizer, finds new life on another streaming service. The gory action film, The Equalizer 2, debuts strongly on Netflix shortly after landing on the popular platform.

Via Collider, The Equalizer 2 now ranks third on Netflix's top 10 movies chart after debuting on the streamer this past weekend, challenging Tom Hardy's new action film, Havoc. Orson Welles movies: All 13 films as a director ranked worst to best
Image
After making what many people cite as the greatest film ever made, "Citizen Kane" (1941), multi-talented actor, writer, director and producer Orson Welles struggled to live up to the success he achieved when he was just 26 years old. Yet seen today, many of the films he made afterwards have attained a similar acclaim. Let's take a look back at all 13 of his completed feature films as a director, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1915, Welles first came to prominence as a stage director, mounting groundbreaking productions of "Macbeth," "Dr. Faustus," and "The Cradle Will Rock" before forming his own repertory company, The Mercury Theater. In addition to Welles, the Mercury Theater Players included Joseph Cotten, Ray Collins, Agnes Moorhead, Everett Sloane, George Coulouris, Norman Lloyd, Martin Gabel and Paul Stewart, many of whom would go onto appear in the director's films.

Tony Awards Nominations Snubs And Surprises: ‘Othello’, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal And Kieran Culkin Don’t Make The Cut
Image
Well, big weekly grosses and even bigger stars can’t guarantee a Tony Awards nomination.

Broadway does what Broadway wants, so no Best Play nominations (or anything else) for huge moneymaker Othello, and no Best Play noms for Good Night, and Good Luck, Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Same for the critical favorite Cult of Love.

While Good Night and Dorian Gray weren’t nominated for Best Play, their big stars — George Clooney and Sarah Snook, respectively — were nominated for their performances, as expected. In fact, Dorian Gray, in which Snook plays all the characters from the Oscar Wilde novel, has the distinction of being the most nominated solo show in Tony history, placing in six categories: Snook’s performance, Kip Williams’ direction, and nods for scenic, lighting, sound and costume design.

Tony Awards Nominations: Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Othello’ Shut Out Despite Strong Ticket Sales
Image
Othello, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington, was entirely shut out of the 2025 Tony Award nominations.

While the play received mostly mixed reviews, it has been drawing crowds on Broadway and has frequently had the most expensive average ticket price in the industry, at $374.17 last week.

The new musical Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, was also entirely shut out of the Tony nominations, as was the musical The Last Five Years, starring Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren. McNeal, led by Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut, did not receive any Tony nominations.

Though George Clooney got his first Tony Award nomination for his role in Good Night, and Good Luck, the play, which he co-wrote, did not receive a nod for best play, even as it has also been the highest grossing production on Broadway for the past several weeks.

Similarly, the celebrity-driven Glengarry Glen Ross did not get a...
