For the past three decades, Disney has been steadily transforming its library of classic animated movies into live-action features. So it was inevitable that Snow White would join the ranks of the remakes, to be followed by Lilo & Stitch this summer, and Moana next year. There are five other animated remakes currently in development, and at some point, Disney’s going to run out of movies to make twice!
To mark Snow White’s arrival in theaters on Friday, we’ve ranked every Disney live-action remake. There are some caveats, however. This list is limited to the actual remakes, rather than prequels, spinoffs, and sequels. The so-called live-action Lion King is also excluded, since it wasn’t live-action at all. It was just made with some very realistic CGI, and it belongs among animated films rather than in this roundup of live-action Disney remakes. With that in the mind, here...

The ‘summer movie season’. Future generations might have to look up the dictionary definition, but for those of us old enough to remember, Hollywood once used to wait until the summer to flood cinemas with their most expensive and hopefully most profitable blockbuster movies of the year. ‘Cinemas’. Our kids might have to look that up too. You’d sit in a big room with lots of other people and watch a movie on a big screen. It was great fun.
The summer of 1994 had been a record-breaking affair with two bona fide über-hits in The Lion King and Forrest Gump, which between them had taken close to $1.5 billion.
The following summer failed to offer up anything that came close to matching that kind of phenomena. However, there was a pretty consistent level of quality across the board – with some noticeably stinky exceptions. In fact, four of the eventual five...

Disney has a long and varied history of live-action films. This is a look at some of the most bizarre you would not have expected to have been produced by the Walt Disney Company.
When you think of Disney movies, what comes to mind are beloved tales meant to entertain both adults and children. They can be epic fairytales brought to life, artistic animated films full of beloved characters, or fun-loving adventure films. In the live-action realm, Disney has made a habit of adapting real-life stories from American history to the big screen, or else making films which feature animals, wacky professors, or flying nannies.
The films this article covers are not like this at all. They are Disney live-action movies, but they defy our expectations of what a Disney live-action movie should be. Some of them are ambitious, pushing outside the envelope, and should be applauded. Others are hairbrained...

Ray Liotta is known for playing many edgy, disgruntled characters — some may even say he’s the go-to guy for the “bad guy.” But during “A Conversation with Ray Liotta” at the Atx Television Festival, he was anything but a villain. In fact, he had the audience laughing with his no-frills Jersey deadpan delivery.
“You see, I’m funny,” he insisted. “I’m not what I play!”
Everyone remembers Liotta from his many roles in film — specifically Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. He’s also known for his roles in Something Wild, Field of Dreams, Unlawful Entry, and Operation Dumbo Drop — a movie he said Don Rickles loved.
His list of film credits may be unbelievably long, but he has just as many television credits to his name. He was on the soap opera Another World (a role he is proud of) as well as a role in the short-lived adaptation...

New Line executives wanted Danny Glover to play Raiden in 1995's Mortal Kombat movie...
Say what you will about the 1995 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, but director Paul W.S. Anderson's version of the famous fighting game was faithful to its source material. All the principle characters were in place, and there was an honest attempt at telling a story that fit within the Mortal Kombat universe.
Sure, the film had issues, but given how the sequel turned out, it's easy to see how the original could have been much worse. Actually, the film was apparently going to be quite different if New Line had gotten their way.
During an episode of IGN Unfiltered, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon recalled some of the discussions he had with New Line executives during his time as a creative consultant on the project. He remembers there being some "pretty interesting discussions" regarding the project,...

Sergio Leone and Joe Dante at one stage were linked with The Phantom. We look back at Billy Zane's moment in the superhero spotlight.
“Where’s your spirit of adventure?” asks Drax, the film's villain, before setting off in search of the final skull of Touganda. This sums up The Phantom nicely. It might not work, but they went on an adventure and tried something interesting and different. Cinema would be richer with a greater sense of adventure. That said, the spirit of the film being expressed by the villain does serve as an example of what a muddle the team behind The Phantom movie got themselves into.
The 1996 film The Phantom is a bit of an oddity. It gets a lot of stuff really wrong, yet there are other areas where it comes up with a really interesting approach to the challenge of making a comic adaptation. It...

As I began to write this B-Sides, it suddenly hit me that if any sci-fi movie from the Eighties deserves a special edition Blu-ray, it’s The Hidden. Why is that Blu-ray being hidden from the waiting public? The theme song is pretty good, too.
Michael Nouri as an earthly cop paired with not-from-this-Earth enigmatic FBI agent Kyle MacLachlan in pursuit of an alien criminal living its own live-action Grand Theft Auto V fantasy body-jumping from person to person.
From the writer of The Boogens, Stakeout, National Treasure, and Operation Dumbo Drop and the director of A Nightmare on Elm Street II: Freddy’s Revenge, Wishmaster 2, and... Well, let’s just stop there.
Anyway, there’s not much that needs to be said here about The Hidden other than it’s a great movie that you really should see if you haven’t already.

Entertainment news is always going on about the highest paid actor or biggest grossing film – but does anyone actually find that stuff interesting? If you’re going to talk about records being broken they should at least involve a car flying through the air or something. Anything that isn’t just about how much money was exchanged from one thing to another thing. Longest Car Jump On Film – Smokey and the Bandit II I tried to watch Smokey and the Bandit II last night, but for some reason I ended up passing out from alcohol, which is weird because I wasn’t drinking. Time for an Operation Dumbo Drop sequel, ya’ll!!! Danny Glover’s all like, “I’m getting too old for this sh*t but regardless of my age this is still total sh*t!” (Weird quote to include in the trailer for Operation Dumbo Drop: On Ghost Protocol Tides-quel Legacy if you ask me.) Actually, it’s a real photo of a black rhino being airlifted by helicopter out of its habitat in South Africa’s eastern cape and relocated 900 miles away where there’s less danger from poachers. Plus we get an awesome photo out of it, thus further raising awareness of this rhino cause. It’s win-win! Except for the poachers who are seeking the “medicine” inside the rhino’s horn. In 2011. Tai the Elephant is having a big year. And that's big even by the standards of elephants.
The Hollywood veteran starred earlier this year in "Like Water for Elephants" (as the elephant, natch), and now takes a lead role in "Zookeeper," playing one of many talking creatures who school Kevin James in the language of love.
How many other actresses can boast of starring opposite Robert Pattinson and Kevin James in a single year? It's clear that Tai the Elephant has become the go-to elephant in Hollywood these days. Eat your hearts out, um, all you other elephants.
Tai has been parading around the Hollywood circus for decades now, consistently turning in tusk-turning performances. We're proud to present the high-profile pachyderm's seven greatest stunts.

On the set of last month's Water for Elephants, star Reese Witherspoon grew so attached to her pachyderm co-star Tai, that she described to the Los Angeles Times how she wept on her last day on set with the animal. Unfortunately for Tai, a 42-year-old elephant who has also appeared in Operation Dumbo Drop and Larger Than Life, others have not always been so kind.

Water For Elephants Bosses Address Abuse Reports
Filmmakers behind Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson's movie Water For Elephants have distanced themselves from reports one of the animals featured in the drama was once abused.
Campaigners from the Animal Defenders International (Adi) group have released footage which purportedly shows 42-year-old Asian elephant Tai being mistreated by trainers in 2005.
In the clip, the elephant, who also appeared in Operation Dumbo Drop and Larger Than Life, is allegedly beaten with hooks and given electric shocks to perform headstands.
Adi president Jan Creamer spoke out against the film, insisting, "The public, the stars and the filmmakers have been duped. This poor elephant was trained to do the very tricks you see in the film by being given electric shocks. I believe that Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson will be horrified to learn what Tai went through."
Bosses at 20th Century Fox have now addressed the controversy, assuring movie-goers that Tai was not mistreated on the Water For Elephants set.
A statement from the studio reads: "Twentieth Century Fox feels strongly that we have taken every step to ensure that the film, while portraying the perception of animal abuse (often through digital effects), held in utmost importance the proper care and humane treatment of all animals involved in the production.
"Fox and the filmmakers behind Water for Elephants are disturbed and saddened by the video being circulated that purportedly shows the elephant Tai being mistreated several years ago. We are strongly opposed to violence against animals, humans or any creatures.
"Fox is compelled to point out that this video was not taken during the training for, or production of, our film, and neither Tai nor any other animal performer in the film was harmed in any way during the making of this film."...

Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson aren't the only big stars of Water For Elephants. Tai, the 42 year-old elephant, who plays Rosie, the film's circus animal, is by far the bigger of the two stars literally.
The 9,000 pound veteran of such films as Bigger Than Life, The Jungle Book, and Operation Dumbo Drop, spent most of her time training and shooting with Robert and Reese. Word on the set is Tai took a liking to the Twilight star. Tai's trainer Gary Johnson of Have Trunk Will Travel Inc. sets the record straight with Cinemovie on the rumored affair and gives us insight into this giant movie star.

I presume that most of you Pajibans know John Hodgman and Jonathan Coulton, those twin princes of nerdom. Friends from college, John, the author and comedian, and JoCo, the musician and comedian, have collaborated on a number of projects including Hodgman's 2008 book tour for "More Information Than You Require." Here's a charming video of them shuckin' and jivin'.
The truth is, I find Jonathan Coulton always and without fail entirely entertaining. John Hodgman I find spotty at best. I'm gonna sling two more JoCo videos at you in the hopes that any of the remaining hold outs will crumble in the face of his golden pipes and nerdy content. Songs about zombies and monkey/pony monsters? Come on!!!

Okay, okay. Enough of that. That was one long stall because the real reason for this post is to share with you a game Coulton and Hodgman...

Can Burr Steers and Zac Efron recapture the form they showed in the underrated 17 Again? Luke checks out The Death And Life Of Charlie St. Cloud...
Movie characters have the best names, don't they? The greatest ones get the balance just right, a little bit preposterous and yet still kind of believable. Cole Trickle, Johnny Utah, Memphis Raines, Clubber Lang. They're all in my top ten.
The Death And Life Of Charlie St. Cloud adds another one to that list. It's a name good enough to make you wonder how much fun the school roll call would have been when the teacher got to him. Quite fun, probably. Sadly, Charlie St. Cloud, the film, doesn't share the same joie de vivre. In fact, it spends much of its time on the opposite, presenting Charlie as a character who doesn't want to live.
For the first five minutes, he looks like...

David Balding.s lifelong dream was to own an elephant, and in 1984 he fulfilled it by acquiring Flora, an African elephant, in 1984. After having her as the centerpiece of his St. Louis circus for 16 years, however, Balding realized a change in the pachyderm and knew exactly what was causing it: elephants are social creatures and she had not seen another elephant in 10 years. Thus began his search to find a new, safe home for his beloved pet, a nine year search that was documented by director Lisa Leeman and made into the film One Lucky Elephant. It.s an overused adjective when trying to describe elephants, but majestic is really the only word that does them justice. Huge, amazing creatures, they are almost human in their actions and emotions and Leeman succeeds in bringing this to her documentary. The story is not Operation Dumbo Drop; it.s not overly saccharine,...

Oh, Corin Nemec. He soared to great heights with Parker Lewis Can't Lose, before quickly losing his tenuous grip on superstardom. But he never really went away on the big or small screen. We can't forget his classic Operation Dumbo Drop, Stargate Sg-1, or National Lampoon's Robodoc -- a film he not only starred in, but also produced.
But back in the day -- the early '90s to be exact -- things were going well. He'd had a big role in Francis Ford Coppola's Tucker: The Man and His Dream, was starring in a hit teen show, and had fancy technology coming to chill in "At Home with Corky Nemec." This super-strange interview, which you can see after the jump, sees the actor show his living room, kitchen, and bedroom. But it's not just some simple, boring Q&A. This strange, older TV woman pops onto his television,...

I am not the creator, I am just the messenger.
I just learned about a new game.
It’s called “Poovie.” Poop + movie.
The Rules of Poovie:
1. Come up with a movie title that can make you think of poop or pooping.
2. No commenter can go two times in a row.
3. You can only give one movie title per turn.
Need some help thinking? Here are some examples –
Operation Dumbo Drop
Five Easy Pieces
The Firm
Something’s Gotta Give
The Big Easy
Grease
Deep Impact
Gone in 60 Seconds
I originally heard of this idea from an interview by Justin Long. Yes, the kid from “Ed” who is dating Drew Barrymore and starred in Live Free and Die Hard, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Drag Me to Hell has done something perhaps even more impressive than any of those flicks.
Enjoy the game.

- The Scorecard Review
I’ve been saying it for years, but perhaps it should be repeated one more time: The funniest person in Hollywood might just be Justin Long.
For exhibit A, check out the attached clip of a chat I had with Long about “Drag Me to Hell,” the awesome Sam Raimi thriller that hits DVD this week. During our conversation, he brought up a rude, crude, new game that might soon sweep the nation.
“I’ve been playing this movie game, it’s called Poovie,” the Mac pitchman and movie star said with a grin. “I’ll introduce it to you.”
“You come up with movie titles - you don’t change the movie titles - just straight-up movie titles that sound like they have to do with number two,” Long explained, giving us examples of some of his favorite films that also sound like someone possibly describing a bowel movement.

Good morning, everyone. Ja from Mnpp here, popping my head in briefly to throw out some news that y'all might've spotted elsewhere but seems like something we need to discuss here. There once once a girl who played a girl in a movie her papa directed and she got a lot of shit for not being up to people's high expectations. She mostly went away for awhile but then popped back up and surprised the world by becoming a director of some stature herself. That girl - who one assumes reads notebooks while laying in fields with dandelion seeds drifting through the lazy breeze amid sun flares and tousled hair - well she's not made a movie in a couple of years, but she's finally announced her next project today. From Variety:

Denis Leary is funny and deprecating while he reviews every movie listed on his IMDb filmography including Operation Dumbo Drop, Who’s The Man (or why he gets through the airport faster), Demolition Man (or why Wesley Snipes is insane), and The Ref (or how Ted Demme said “Fuck You” to Disney). Thanks to /Film reader Rory M for the tip. Watch the video after the jump.
