For a lot of people, reality TV can be a bit hit-and-miss. But, for fans, these shows are an integral part of popular culture. Without them, audiences would have very little understanding of human nature and would fail to remain engaged with any other show on TV.
At times, fans often view the late 1990s and the early 2000s as the best decades for reality television. Shows like Big Brother and The Real World were dominating the ratings and allowing audiences to study everything that the human race had to offer. However, fans are encouraged to step away from these shows and focus on what the genre has offered in the last five years alone.

The Challenge Season 41 filming is underway for MTV episodes, with daily challenges and eliminations.
While the upcoming season’s title and format are unknown, online spoilers reveal which cast members are competing and headed home after the eliminations.
In Season 40, viewers saw a Battle of the Eras theme featuring only veteran cast members who have appeared in multiple seasons of the show.
Some were multi-time champions looking to add to their resumes. That was the case for the season winners Jordan Wiseley, Jenny West, and Rachel Robinson, who added another win to their career achievements.
Season 41 appears to have a much different theme from Season 40 because there are 16 rookies and 16 vets. As of this writing, at least two vets and one rookie are out of the competition.
Remember that this report will contain potential spoilers for MTV’s The Challenge Season 41.

The Challenge: All Stars is airing Season 5, featuring the classic Rivals theme from previous seasons.
During its many seasons, the flagship featured three Rivals seasons, including the memorable Rivals III, where Johnny Bananas stunned his teammate Sarah Rice and claimed all the prize money for himself.
All Stars Rivals also includes pairs of castmates with a feud, whether it’s due to a former argument, falling out, throwing shade, or backstabbing move from the game.
Among the teams are Nany Gonzalez with Turabi “Turbo” Camkiran, Faysal “Fessy” Shafaat with Amber Borzotra, Veronica Portillo with Katie Cooley, and Ashley Mitchell with Aneesa Ferreira.
Former showmance couple Dario Medrano and Ashley Kelsey seem to get along despite their differences.
They might also qualify for the iconic theme Mark Long recently mentioned that fans shared feedback about.

Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, best known for competing on two dozen seasons of MTV’s “The Challenge,” is under fire for a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Feb. 4.
It all began days earlier, as he shared multiple messages about the competition between “The Challenge,” “Big Brother,” “Survivor” and other reality shows. On Feb. 3, Taylor Hale, the winner of Season 24 of “Big Brother,” posted about him.
“That yellow fruit man pinned a tweet to his profile at 8Am saying he was looking for engagement, and by 3Pm you all gave him exactly what he asked for? I don’t want to hear a single word if he somehow pops up on every show in the conversation,” Hale, who was the first Black woman to win the CBS reality show, wrote. The Challenge’s Beth Stolarczyk blasts All Stars ‘cheater’ castmate: ‘She never took responsibility’
Beth Stolarczyk is fresh off another appearance in The Challenge: All Stars, this time returning for a Rivals-themed installment.
Like her previous stints on the show, based on MTV’s Og Challengers, Beth had another exit ahead of reaching a final.
The show’s format involved cast members teaming up with castmates they’ve feuded with or had some rivalry with, so The Challenge partnered Beth with Jonna Mannion.
While they first appeared as All Stars castmates on the debut season, Beth ignited their feud on Season 3 when she called out Jonna for allegedly cheating with castmate Mj Garrett.
Despite Beth’s attempts to bring Jonna down, The Real World: Cancun star emerged as a winner for her second-straight All Stars season.
However, Beth recently commented about her and Jonna’s brief run on All Stars 5, calling out her “cheater” castmate and suggesting she was fake to her during their chats.

There had been a debate for quite a while regarding the greatest of all time on The Challenge.
Many fans argued in favor of Johnny Bananas due to the number of seasons won, while others mentioned Chris “Ct” Tamburello as the show’s all-time best.
However, the arrival of The Real World: Portland’s Jordan Wiseley seemingly settled the debate for many fans.
And according to his former fiancee, Tori Deal, there’s no question regarding the Goat debate.
“Jordan. It’s not a question,” she said when asked who the greatest of all time is on The Challenge Fandom Podcast.
She explained that he’s “not perfect” and has flaws in the game but has officially stamped his name on the franchise.

Singer Macy Gray is no stranger to reality TV, but she surprised judges on The Masked Singer UK after her elimination from the competition abruptly became tense.
Before The Masked Singer UK, Macy appeared on MTV's nostalgic reboot of The Surreal Life – The Surreal Life: Villa Of Secrets – which itself was originally something of a spin-off of the network's genre-making The Real World.
The Surreal Life had a twist, though, as we explained back in July:
"The Surreal Life (2003-2006) [originally was] a reality television series that sets a select group of past-their-prime celebrities and records them as they live together in a mansion ... cameras not only record the castmates' participation in group activities assigned to them, but also their interpersonal relationships and conflicts."
Ahead of its 2024 debut, Macy talked a bit about how filming was unexpectedly emotionally taxing.

Jordan Wiseley is highly regarded as one of the best competitors in the history of The Challenge, despite only have one fully-functioning hand. The MTV star is missing four fingers from his left hand but has never used his disability as an excuse. Instead, he has thrived, even beating his opponents over the years in competitions that heavily favor contestants with two hands. When he made his television debut on The Real World: Portland in 2013, Wiseley insisted that he doesn’t consider himself to be handicapped. What happened to The Challenge star Jordan Wiseley’s hand? Although Wisely initially told his Real World castmates that he lost his hand in an alligator attack, he later revealed the truth behind his missing extremity. The reality star was born with a congenital abnormality called symbrachydactyly, which is “a condition of short fingers that may be webbed or joined,” according to Boston Children’s Hospital.

This is the fictional story of five strangers picked to live in a house and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting murdered… My Little Eye. And if you haven’t seen this one, it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Reality shows are nearly unavoidable these days, but back in the ‘90s they were still rare. Aside from MTV’s The Real World and episodes of Cops, we hadn’t been exposed to much reality programming yet. And when word started leaking out about the development of shows like Big Brother and Survivor, they sounded odd. A little twisted, potentially dangerous. Big Brother was offering the chance to watch its contestants on 24/7 live streams. Survivor was taking its contestants out to isolated locations and leaving them to provide basic survival necessities for themselves. While the concept of Big Brother just seemed weird,...

When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

Throughout its lengthy history, The Challenge has introduced viewers to hundreds of memorable and lovable contestants, some of whom have been honored by the series after their tragic passings. The show premiered in 1998 (then called Road Rules: All Stars), and eventually evolved into Real World/Road Rules Challenge. It finally took on an all-encompassing title, The Challenge. The reality competition show aimed to take stars from two already popular MTV shows (Road Rules and The Real World), and pit them against each other in physical competitions. Fans of the original programs could tune in, and root for their favorite stars in a new setting.
The Challenge's format is unique from other reality TV series because its contestants typically return to compete multiple times. This distinct factor has allowed the stars (and fans of the series) to form long-lasting relationships with those who appear on The Challenge. Following the tragic...

Former The Challenge winner Zach Nichols knows that MTV’s competition series isn’t just a game that’s won physically but also mentally.
He previously won with several of his The Real World castmates on Battle of the Seasons in 2012 and returned to the final several more times after.
While he’s not in the epic Battle of the Eras season, many of his former castmates are, including Cory Wharton and Derek Chavez.
Cory and Derek faced off in the Episode 16 elimination after previous elimination winner Jenny West selected them among her three targets.
The event wasn’t a head-to-head physical competition, so fortune was on Derek’s side. Instead, the objective was to be the first to carry cinder blocks to a platform in the sand and correctly assemble the puzzle pictured on the blocks.

After a tumultuous return to MTV’s The Challenge, another one of Laurel Stucky’s Season 40 castmates suggests she might be the problem.
Season 40, known as Battle of the Eras, featured 40 of The Challenge’s iconic stars from various eras of the competition series.
Laurel appeared as one of the 10 members of the Era 2 team, which also featured her friend-turned-rival, Cara Maria Sorbello, and seven-time winner Johnny Bananas.
While she looked to be a frontrunner for another Challenge win after her dominant performance on the All Stars 4 spinoff, various altercations plagued Laurel’s MTV season.
Among them were spats with castmates Darrell Taylor, Emily Schrom, and Cara, the latter of which erupted into a heated incident and involved some moments with sensitive remarks that never aired.
Some of Laurel’s situations with her castmates carried over to the Season 40 reunion and on social media, including a war of words on X,...

If you’re a royal follower, you’ve probably noticed the odd, almost awkward dynamic between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in recent months. And it’s not just the tabloids stirring the pot this time—this time, it seems it’s Markle herself who’s leaving the public to question the stability of their once-dazzling fairytale.

Reports suggest that the Royal couple may be heading toward professional separation, fueled by Markle’s solo appearance at a recent Thanksgiving event.
The rising speculation about their divorce has made fans reflect on Andrew Tate’s earlier controversial remarks. And while many still disagree with his views, they can’t deny that some of his predictions about relationships seem to be hitting a little too close to home for the Sussexes.

Another cast member, Ariana Madix, tried to defend Sandoval but was ultimately deceived. Instead of picking up the pieces, Vanderpump Rules is wiping the slate clean for Season 12, inviting new cast members to the table.

President-elect Donald Trump continues to announce comically terrible cabinet picks seemingly plucked out of half-remembered TV listings from 2013. Now he’s added Dr. Mehmet Oz to a lineup that already includes Fox News hosts Sean Duffy (formerly of The Real World) and Pete Hegseth, as well as WWE co-founder Linda McMahon.
Dr. Oz has been tapped to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a decision that’s led a lot of folks online to make jokes comparing Trump’s pick to another famous TV quack: Dr. Nick Riviera.
But that’s not exactly a fair comparison — to Dr. Nick, that is.
Sure, Dr. Nick’s not perfect. He lost his watch during an operation, dispenses opioids from a Pez dispenser, once stole cadavers in order to drive in the carpool lane and surgically swapped poor Mr. McGreg’s arm and leg.
But Dr. Nick may just be a better physician than Dr.

Hollywood writing partnerships dissolve for many reasons. There may be creative disagreements, personality conflicts, workload imbalances. For the celebrated author Dave Eggers and his younger brother Toph, who’d had a run of collaborations, the rupture in their bond could perhaps be attributed to all these things. But, mainly, to far deeper, darker troubles.
“For so many years I was locked in a certain relationship with Dave, and I just couldn’t see fault in him — and then, once I did, it flipped,” says Toph over one of several long meals at diners and delis across L.A.’s Eastside.
Dave emerged as a literary phenomenon a quarter-century ago with A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, his memoir about raising Toph after both of their parents died of cancer within weeks of each other. The book became a generational touchstone for its joking-but-not, manic-expressive style — evidenced in the title itself,...

Jimmy Kimmel commented on Donald Trump’s nomination of former Fox Business host Sean Duffy for secretary of transportation during his Tuesday night monologue, calling it “one of his least embarrassing picks.”
Though Duffy served as a U.S. representative for Wisconsin from 2011 to 2019, he started his career in the ’90s as a reality star, which Kimmel was quick to point out.

President-Elect Donald Trump's surprising cabinet picks have dominated the news cycle this week among the latest is reality TV star Sean Duffy, who came to fame on MTV's The Real World.
Although it is true that Sean Duffy was a cast member on The Real World, he has actually had an extensive career in politics in the intervening years.
Moreover, Trump famously appointed another reality television personality to his administration during his first term: Omarosa Manigault Newman, who was known for her stint on The Apprentice.
Omarosa worked on his campaign before his election, and in September 2016, she said of then-candidate Trump:
"Every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump. It's everyone who's ever doubted Donald, whoever disagreed, whoever challenged him. It is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe."

Even in todays environment where any piece of vintage content seen by more than 12 people is considered reboot-worthy, the 1991 comedy Dont Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead is an odd movie to revisit. Thats because the film was riffing off the then-recent phenomenon of the latchkey kid Christina Applegate played a 17-year-old forced to care for her four siblings when their mother goes on vacation and their babysitter dies.
The film belonged to a new wave of movies following children without parental supervision and was released just eight months after Home Alone. Dont Tell Mom was not the funniest of the bunch, but it had some smarts. It was a teen fantasy tinged with the hard reality of having to feed your family and keep the lights on inside a busy home (the original title was The Real World until the studio altered it to avoid conflict with MTV's then...

Sean Duffy is entering the real world of Washington D.C., with Donald Trump tapping the Fox Business host and former Representative of Wisconsin to be his nominee as his secretary of transportation. Duffy would replace Pete Buttigieg, who was selected by sitting President Biden to lead the department under his administration.
Duffy represents a double-dip into the bin of Fox personalities for Trump. The President-elect had previously announced that “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Pete Hegseth would be appointed secretary of defense. Unlike Hegseth, Duffy has legislative experience, having served as a U.S. Representative from 2011 to 2019. He resigned in 2019 for personal reasons, disclosing that his newborn daughter had been diagnosed with a heart defect.
Prior to his 2010 campaign for the House of Representatives, Duffy had been appointed the District Attorney of Ashland County in Wisconsin in 2002.

Donald Trump has gone to the Fox News well yet again, tapping the Fox Business host to be his nominee for secretary of transportation.
Duffy, a former congressman, is the co-host of Fox Business’ The Bottom Line and is a contributor to the news network. He also was a cast member on a season of The Real World.
Trump said in a statement that Duffy “will prioritize Excellence, Competence, Competitiveness and Beauty when rebuilding America’s highways, tunnels, bridges and airports. He will ensure our ports and dams serve our Economy without compromising our National Security, and he will make our skies safe again by eliminating Dei for pilots and air traffic controllers.”
Duffy is married to Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy. A co-host of that show, Pete Hegseth, was nominated by Trump last week to serve as secretary of defense.

When Survivor planted its flag in 2000, no one had ever seen anything like it on TV. Game shows had been around since television's inception, and The Real World launched the genre of reality TV, but neither had ever been produced at this scope. No one knew what to make of this "Robinson Crusoe"-Agatha Christie lovechild of a concept before its debut, and some viewers even wondered if the competition would end with literally only one contestant left standing.

A new season of The Traitors US comes to Peacock this winter. A group of reality TV stars and additional celebrities will compete for part of the $250,000 prize.
Peacock previously revealed the names of 21 players, but familiar twists await the fans.
Last season on The Traitors, a Below Deck star joined the cast after someone quit, and a Big Brother winner popped up to lead them through a challenge.
Kate Chastain from Below Deck and the first season of The Traitors arrived at the Scotland castle mid-way through Season 2. She was a late arrival who was allowed to join the game after boxer Deontay Wilder quit.
Later, Big Brother 2 winner Dr. Will Kirby surfaced as someone staying at the cabin in the woods. That cabin is where creepy challenges happen with bugs or darkness. He didn’t play the game but was part of the advertising.

How Much of Reality TV is Real? The Truth Behind the Drama
First of all, reality TV should be taken exactly how they're represented. These are moments shot while the cameras are rolling, pretty similar to how live shows are done in real time — there's no telling which is real or fake.
However, to give a more profound perspective on it, the electronic-media division head at the College-Conservatory of Music previously said, "Reality TV is a misnomer. In many cases, there is nothing remotely real about it."
