Image
Quick LinksMark Wahlberg's Role and the Plot of 'The Substitute'Why Mark Wahlberg Avoided TV for the Movies

Mark Wahlberg is one of the few people who have successfully made the career jump from rapping to acting. The Hollywood A-lister has come a long way from his time as part of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Today, he's appeared in dozens of movies across a 30+ year acting career. He recently headlined the action-thriller flick Flight Risk. However, in that three-decade span, Wahlberg only had one role in a scripted television program. Believe it or not, it was his very first role.

Wahlberg's first credited appearance came with 1993's television film The Substitute. He played Ryan Westerberg, a student who encounters a substitute teacher with a dark side. While obscure today, the role was the launching pad for Wahlberg's eventual leading-man career status. But why has he never made a return to TV?...

Mark Wahlberg Suggests He May Retire Soon
Image
Mark Wahlberg, a Hollywood A-lister, is considering retiring from his acting career. Wahlberg started acting at a young age and has since become one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. While he has been busy with numerous projects, Wahlberg acknowledges that he cannot maintain his current pace for much longer.

Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg may be nearing the end of his acting career. While he has seen himself become a major Hollywood A-lister and sought-after star in recent years, the actor is already thinking about retirement. Born in 1971 in Boston, Wahlberg is the youngest of nine children, and began acting with only 22 years old. In 1993, he had his first three roles, one in the television movie The Substitute, the sitcom Out All Night and in The Ben Stiller Show. In 1994, he made the leap to the big screen with Renaissance Man, and would not return to television until 2004 with Entourage,...

Forgotten 90s Actors We’d Love to See Make a Comeback
Image
Last week, we posted a list of five forgotten actors we’d like to see make a comeback, and the reaction was so strong, we decided to post a bunch more! There’s a ton of forgotten actors from the 80s and 90s we’d love to have back on our screen, so let’s take a look at another group of them today.

Kelly Jo Minter

Let’s start with a horror favorite and a regular presence on the convention circuit, Kelly Jo Minter. Most folks will remember her from A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, The People Under the Stairs, and a slew of television series appearances. She was everywhere for a while in the 1980s and 1990s, then projects started becoming further and further apart, with nothing between 2008 and 2019, then nothing since. This actress is beloved by many people, and she should get a new part,...

‘The Wonder Years’: Patti Labelle Joins Williams Family As Dulé Hill’s Mom
Image
Patti Labelle has joined the cast of ABC’s The Wonder Years for Season 2 in the role of Shirley Williams, mother of Dulé Hill’s character Bill.

Shirley, who is a church choir director, is described as “sweet as she can be but has another side to her when choir members don’t quite hit the right notes.” Labelle is set for a two-episode arc as the character.

Whether or not the Godmother of Soul will perform with her musical TV family or bake any of her famous sweet potato pies is as yet unknown.

Inspired by the coming-of-age series which premiered in 1988 of the same name, The Wonder Years is a comedy that tells the story of the Williams family set in the late 1960s, all through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean (E.J. Williams). With the wisdom of his adult years (narrated by Don Cheadle), Dean...

Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser in Dingue de toi (1992)
Is You, Me and the Apocalypse Just the Jolt NBC Needs?
Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser in Dingue de toi (1992)
How dry is the NBC comedy well? Dry enough that it's taking straight-up imports. It's not unheard of for ABC to air Canadian cop shows in the summertime, say, but not so long ago, the eight o'clock Thursday slot on NBC was as primo as primo got, which is where the network has placed Sky 1's You, Me and the Apocalypse. Here is a brief history of what has aired in that time slot over the last 30-odd years:The 1984–85 TV season until the 1991–92 TV season: The Cosby Show 1992–93 TV season: A Different World, Out All Night (that was a one-season Patti Labelle show), Mad About You 1993–94 and 1994–95: Mad About You 1995–96 through 2003–04: Friends 2004–05: Joey 2005–06: Joey, Will and Grace 2006–07 through 2008–09: My Name Is Earl 2009–10 and 10–11: Community 2011–12: Community, 30 Rock 2012–13: 30 Rock, Community 2013–14: Parks and Recreation, Community 2014–16:...
