After helping launch the show as co-head writer and one of eight executive producers, Daytime Emmy Award winner Robert Guza Jr. has exited “Beyond the Gates,” Soap Opera Network has learned.
Robert Guza Jr.

While representatives for the daytime drama series did not respond to a request for comment at press time, it’s understood that Guza chose to leave after fulfilling the terms of his contract.
Renewed for a second season earlier this month, CBS inadvertently revealed in a press release that veteran writer Tracey Thomson had joined the show as an executive producer, replacing Guza.
It’s unknown at this time whether Thomson will also serve as the show’s new co-head writer, working alongside creator and head writer Michele Val Jean in crafting the show’s long-term story, though it is likely considering her extensive writing career in daytime that also includes writing episodes of “General Hospital...

Enthusiasts of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David's hit sitcom "Seinfeld" would be able to tell you that the title character (Seinfeld) had many, many girlfriends over the course of the show's 180 episodes. Indeed, Jerry usually only dated his partners for plot purposes, allowing them to stick around for a single episode. The following week, Jerry would be dating someone new. A metric on the show's DVDs pointed out that Jerry dated a grand total of 72 women over the course of the series' nine years. That means he dated each woman for an average of 45-and-a-half days. Only five of the 72 women dated Jerry for more than one episode.
It's easy to see why Jerry never dated anyone for an extended period. Jerry and the other three leads of "Seinfeld" were meant to be shallow, petty, childish, and awful. They were neurotic and self-serving characters,...

Jack Wagner joined General Hospital as Frisco Jones. When he left, he thought his soap opera past was behind him. He had no interest in joining Melrose Place. At first, he nearly skipped the audition.
Soap Opera Strike
Wagner reflected on his acting career during his interview on the Still The Place podcast. He spoke to hosts Courtney Thorne-Smith, Daphne Zuniga, and Laura Leighton about his audition for Melrose Place. Wagner almost didn’t star on the sexy primetime drama. He didn’t want to do another soap like Gh.
It wasn’t the genre that he was against. Wagner feared that he would get typecast. When his agent suggested the role as Dr. Peter Burns, he tossed the thought aside. Wagner was asked to audition for the show. His initial reaction was, “No chance. I’m not doing it. It feels like a soap.”
Then, there was one thing that changed his mind.

It’s been three decades since Melrose Place debuted on Fox — and Mondays haven’t mellowed one bit. They’re still a bitch.
Since last July — though not always on Mondays — Melrose Place stars Courtney Thorne-Smith, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton have been reuniting weekly for their iHeartRadio podcast, Still the Place. Each episode takes a nostalgic stroll down 4616 Melrose memory lane, as the trio revisits and recaps their old episodes.
“It was pre-cell phone, it was pre-streaming, it was appointment television. It’s when you got together to watch a television show with your friends so you could remember watching a show where you were in your life and who you were with,” Leighton says. “And that’s a unique thing we don’t get any more with television.”
Their journeys often include candid conversations with former castmates, including Thomas Calabro, Andrew Shue, Grant Show, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Doug Savant,...

The original Melrose Place debuted to 16 million viewers and became a primetime-soap favorite with its outlandish plot twists. The Fox series’s 2009 CW revival, however, scored just 2.3 million viewers with its premiere and eventually dropped to 860k viewers. Sunday (April 13) marks the 15th anniversary of the newer Melrose Place’s first season finale and series finale, not that many viewers will even remember. So what went wrong? Let’s take a look at why the second generation of this TV soap failed to make a splash. The series had too few originals. For starters, precious few people who hung around the original Melrose Place apartment complex returned for the revival. Melrose Place creator Darren Star did not participate in the update, leaving screenwriters Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer as showrunners. ...

When "Star Trek: The Next Generation" first began in 1987, LeVar Burton was probably the biggest star in the cast. He had already been nominated for three Emmys, once in 1977 for playing Kunta Kinte in the celebrated miniseries "Roots," and two more in 1985 and 1986 for hosting the beloved book-based kid program "Reading Rainbow." The latter show would end up netting him 12 Emmy wins between 1990 and 2007, and cement his reputation as one of his generation's preeminent TV celebrities. The fact that he would be selected to play chief engineer Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek" only more deeply entrenched Burton in the public's awareness.
Geordi La Forge was, more than anything, a nerd. He was deeply interested in machines and engines, and Burton was given the lion's share of NextGen's nonsensical polysyllabic technobabble. He was also notoriously undersexed. Geordi was equipped with a visor that tapped directly into his brain, feeding him...

You might know him best for his 10-year portrayal as Aquaman, Protector of the Deep. Future moviegoers might remember him more as Lobo, The Ultimate Bastich. Whether Jason Momoa is a member of The Justice League or an intergalactic bounty hunter, the Hawaii-based actor had very different breaks on the small screen. Rather than cementing himself in the superhero world, Momoa first found himself in the soap opera scene. When the longstanding NBC series Baywatch was renamed Baywatch: Hawaii in its last two seasons, the then 19-year-old actor made his small-screen debut as one of the mainstay lifeguards.
But as interesting as that beach drama could be (after 10 years on television), what’s more eye-opening is that Momoa tried for that same type of slow-burning and scintillating soap opera once more after Baywatch: Hawaii was canceled in 2001. Before securing the role of Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actor Brent Spiner was perhaps most widely recognized for his recurring role as Bob Wheeler on the sitcom "Night Court." He also had one-shot appearances on various other hit TV shows like "Tales from the Darkside," "The Paper Chase," and "Ryan's Hope." He also had a bit part in the excellent cult musical "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" and was one of the background students in "Grease 2." Spiner had been acting in Broadway productions throughout the 1970s.

Cynthia Nixon revealed to “Sex and the City” co-star Kristin Davis on Monday that when she joined the HBO comedy as Miranda, she thought another famous “Kristin” had been cast as Charlotte: “I didn’t know who you were,” she said.
The other Kristin in question? British actress and recently a Best Actress Oscar nominee for “The English Patient,” Kristin Scott Thomas.
Nixon, who played Miranda on the hit HBO series, stopped by Davis’ “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast on Monday and talked about the funny case of mistaken identity as well as their experience on the initial episodes working together.
“Sarah [Jessica Parker] and I knew each other quite well. We’d worked together a bunch of times, and we were always auditioning for the same parts and stuff when we were kids,” Nixon said. “And Kim [Cattrall], I knew a little bit, I’d seen her in a few things.”

Exclusive: Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and New Amsterdam creator David Schulner have teamed for Uncorked, a half-hour, single-camera dramedy that has landed at Netflix with a script-to-series commitment, sources tell Deadline.
Details of the premise are being kept under wraps, but I hear the series is set in Napa Valley and, like many of Star’s series, has a female lead.
Star and Schulner are co-writing and executive producing Uncorked through Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, where Star has an overall and Schulner a first-look deal.
The duo recently pitched the show, which had five buyers pursuing it in a competitive situation, I hear. Uncorked ultimately landed at Netflix, home of Star’s rom-com hit Emily In Paris, with a significant script-to-series commitment.
Reps for Netflix and Universal TV declined comment.

Peacock has won the rights to develop Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ upcoming novel “Climbing in Heels” into a TV series, Variety has learned.
Peacock has given the drama project a script-to-series commitment. It was first reported in December that Universal TV was taking the show to market, with Goldsmith-Thomas and Darren Star set to serve as co-writers and executive producers.
“I am thrilled that ‘Climbing In Heels’ was taken off the table so quickly by Peacock,” Goldsmith-Thomas said. “It is the perfect home for Darren and I to bring these fabulously complicated and colorful characters to life”
The official description of the show states that it is “a fictional tale following the rise of five ambitious secretaries navigating the glitzy world of 1980s Hollywood while offering a glimpse into the boys-will-be-boys club and the women who wanted a seat at a table where they were expected to serve.”

Lisa Rinna is getting candid about some of her iconic soap roles. The Days of Our Lives alum doesn’t typically bat an eye at anything, but she was shocked when she had to kiss two different men on the same day.
Juicy Drama
Rinna took a trip down memory lane on the Who’s the A**hole? With Katya podcast. The actress was asked to share “the most juicy and exciting” soap role. Rinna immediately mentioned the time when she played Taylor McBridge on the ’90s primetime drama Melrose Place. It was a sultry soap centered around good-looking residents of an apartment complex.
“That was most fun by far,” Rinna explained. “She was nuts. And I could do anything.” There was a time when the script called for Rinna to kiss two men on the same day. “This was so funny. One day, I had to kiss two actors,...

Kristin Davis recalls being told by a producer, “Don’t gain any weight,” while filming for Melrose Place.
In a recent cover story for People, the actress looked back at her time on the hit soap opera, on which she played Brooke Armstrong. And while she has positive memories of her co-stars, she admitted that “there was a general vibe on the set though, that was difficult, about the thinness situation.”
Seeing “every single person was gorgeous and super skinny,” Davis felt like she needed to do something, so she hired a running coach and would partake in back-to-back 90-minute spin classes.

Carol Goldwasser, a casting director who found actors for such popular kids-focused TV shows as Hannah Montana, Austin & Ally, Dog With a Blog and Cousins for Life, has died. She was 67.
Goldwasser died unexpectedly Dec. 5 at her home in Palm Springs after minor surgery, her friend and manager, Theodore Gekis, announced.
Known for her signature “Hi, Doll!” greeting and for nurturing such talent as Zac Efron, Khary Payton and Alison Brie, Goldwasser handled castings in Los Angeles and New York for more than two decades.

The '90s was a complicated time to be a TV teen. While the kids of "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Melrose Place" were entrenched in constant scandalous teen drama, a gentler, more family-friendly version of teen life was drawing in audiences on ABC. "Boy Meets World" ran for an impressive 158 episodes, from 1993 to 2000, and remains a pop cultural touchstone — albeit not quite as potent of one as its cattier primetime counterparts — to this day.
Like every memorable sitcom, "Boy Meets World" knew how to pick a guest star, and several of the actors who showed up across its seven-season run went on to be pretty dang famous. In a few cases, people who were already big-name actors at the time also dropped in on the kids of John Adams High. If you watched the show at a young age, though, you'd be forgiven for not recognizing the industry veterans and...

Here’s a fun fact to blow your minds: Yes, technically, Knots Landing is a spin-off from mega-hit Dallas. Gary Ewing is the middle brother of Jr and Bobby Ewing, who made one appearance on the Mother Ship show, played by David Ackroyd before Ted Shackelford took over the role for the next decade-plus.
But the original Kl concept pre-dated Dallas. It was supposed to be an American version of the Swedish series Scenes From a Marriage by Ingemar Bergman. That series didn’t get picked up. But when CBS wanted a Dallas spin-off, Lorimar made one of the characters a Ewing, and we were off to the races! You can watch the entire series from the start right here on Amazon Prime. Here’s why you should definitely do that.

Doug Savant, who played Matt Fielding, a gay character on Melrose Place, recently explained why he avoided discussing his own sexuality while on the show. He felt it was important to stay true to the role he was portraying.
On the Still The Place podcast, Savant talked with former co-stars Laura Leighton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Daphne Zuniga about the challenges of playing a gay character as a straight actor during a time when TV had very little representation.
When we were shooting all those things and the trailers for the show, I said to Sam, our publicist, ‘Do you care to talk about how we’re going to handle this going forward, that there was a gay character?'”
I knew it was exceptional, and I thought people would be interested. But she goes, ‘Well, no, it’s not a big deal. You’re an actor, you’re just playing a character.
