The deaf-mute character Gabriella was based upon a real little girl, a fan of the show who had died during its first season.
The opening theme to the show is a combination of the songs "Part of Your World", "Under the Sea", and "Kiss the Girl". The overture for the upcoming stage musical of The Little Mermaid will be similar to this.
As well as due to Jason Marin's voice deepening, and due to the death of Ben Wright, Buddy Hackett and Christopher Daniel Barnes were the only voice actors for La Petite Sirène (1989) that didn't reprise their roles for the television series.
