‘White Lotus’ Executive Producer David Bernad Teams With UFA as German Production Company Ramps Up International Ambitions (Exclusive)

Emmy-winning “The White Lotus” executive producer David Bernad has teamed with German production company UFA to develop series “Hotel Neptun.” The move comes as UFA, which is part of Fremantle, ramps up its international ambitions. A year after Sascha Schwingel took over as CEO of UFA, he spoke to Variety about the company’s priorities.

Journalists Joshua Davis (“Little America”) and Joshuah Bearman (“Argo”) are attached to “Hotel Neptun,” which is about a hotel in the former East Germany, where spies from all over the world met.

Nataly Kudiabor, a producer on UFA’s dark comedy “Where’s Wanda?” for Apple TV+ and managing director of UFA Fiction, is also attached to “Hotel Neptun.”

Bernad is also known for the Amazon Freevee mockumentary “Jury Duty” and the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers” with Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux.

Capital Motion Picture Snares ‘The Man on the Other Side’ for North America, U.K. (Exclusive)

Capital Motion Picture Group has picked up North American and U.K. rights to Cold War thriller “The Man on the Other Side,” directed by Marcus Lim. The Canada-based full-service distributor said that it plans to release the film in 2021.

The deal was announced by producers Militancy Films Singapore and Germany’s Doghouse Filmproductions. International rights sales are handled by Italy’s Iuvit Media Sales.

The film, which is currently on theatrical release in Singapore, has also been licensed to SVOD specialist Tribes Media for streaming in Latin America, Benelux, Spain and Scandinavia.

The story follows the doomed love affair between a two warring spies, set in the politically fraught period of 1970s Germany. Stylistically, the film pays homage to spy films of the 1970s, including “Day of the Jackal” and “Three Days of the Condor.” It stars Nils Schulz, Mari Bensel, James Carney and Joerg Malchow.

BBC Buys ‘Vienna Blood’ Crime Thriller Series from ‘Sherlock’ Writer (Exclusive)
“Vienna Blood” is set to spill on the BBC after the U.K. pubcaster picked up the Austrian-set crime thriller, which is based on the best-selling Liebermann novels by Frank Tallis. Steve Thompson, whose writing credits include the BBC’s “Sherlock” and Fox’s international thriller “Deep State,” penned the series.

Starring Matthew Beard (“The Imitation Game”), and Juergen Maurer (“Tatort”), “Vienna Blood” is set in 1900s Vienna, a hot bed of philosophy, science and art.

Max Liebermann (Beard) is a brilliant young English doctor, studying under psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. He meets Oskar Rheinhardt (Maurer), an Austrian detective and the pair go on to tackle some of Vienna’s most mysterious and deadly cases.

The series was filmed on location in the Austrian capital. Conleth Hill (“Game of Thrones”), Charlene McKenna (“Ripper Street”), Amelia Bullmore (“Gentleman Jack”), Jessica De Gouw (“Dracula”), and Luise Von Finckh also all appear. It is produced by the U.
