The Super Mario Bros. Movie boasts a talented ensemble cast of actors offering their take on the iconic characters from the Nintendo video games. The animated fantasy comedy follows Mario in his journey through the visually surreal Mushroom Kingdom where his brother, Luigi, has been kidnapped by the fire-breathing Bowser, king of the Koopas. The Super Mario Bros. Movie cast assembles fan favorites from the games as Mario is aided by Princess Peach and the mushroom-like sidekick Toad.

The 2023 movie faithfully recreates classic tropes from the games while also reinterpreting outdated elements — a massive improvement over the heavily panned live-action Super Mario Bros. film from 1993. Mario has had a more favorable run in animation, with TV shows like The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Super Mario World and the 1986 anime film The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. This new Super Mario Bros. movie now marks the character’s animated feature debut in Hollywood.

At least six classic game levels will be incorporated into The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Details regarding Illumination’s animated movie indicate that it won’t just be bringing the characters from the Mario universe to life; it’ll also find room to work in the gameplay itself. It seems it’ll go about that by adapting some of the levels, even those that were originally rendered in 2D.

Just how much the movie is pulling from the games is evidenced by the trailers, which are chock-full of references to Nintendo classics like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, and more. Parker Young has been cast to star opposite Adhir Kalyan in Chuck Lorre’s “United States of Al” comedy pilot, which is in the works in CBS.

The show is a multi-camera comedy about the friendship between Riley (Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Kalyan), the Interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

Young is best known for his two-season series regular role on Bravo’s “Imposters.” He will next be seen recurring in Lena Waithe’s upcoming series “Twenties” at Bet. Young was also a series regular on Fox’s “Enlisted, as well as ABC’s “Suburgatory.” On the film side, he was a lead in the independent feature “Fourth Man Out” and the movie “Animal,” produced by Flower Films. Exclusive: Hideout Pictures has acquired rights to Kill Whitey Donovan, the upcoming comic book series produced and developed by the 12-Gauge Comics label and published by Dark Horse. Sigrid Gilmer has been attached to adapt the series into an action film.

Hideout, the financing, developing and producing arm of Nashville-based Average Joes Entertainment, will develop and finance the project through its newly created film fund, which provided financing for the upcoming Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. It was inappropriately reported by various sources earlier in the day that the Bob's Burgers movie release date was canceled, and that it had been pulled from Disney's impending release slate. Joaquin Phoenix has been selected as the recipient of the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s chairman’s award for his performance in “Joker.”

"Body of War"

Talk show legend Phil Donahue hands over the mic to Iraqi war veteran Tomas Young in this hard-hitting documentary that contrasts Young's struggle to re-enter civilian life as a paraplegic and anti-war activist with archival footage of an overeager U.S. Congress and what the filmmakers view as their hasty decision to greenlight the invasion. Although the film, co-directed by Donahue and Ellen Spiro, was named best documentary of 2007 by the National Board of Review, "Body of War" has earned equal attention for its soundtrack led by two tracks from Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, with all proceeds going to the non-profit organization Iraq Veterans Against The War.
