I once thought the European mind couldn’t comprehend Dinner for Schmucks. I now know how wrong I was.
14 ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ (2010)
The 1998 French film Le Dîner de Cons (“dinner of fools”) won a ton of awards and sparked three different Indian adaptations: 2007’s Hindi-language Bheja Fry, 2008’s Kannada-language Mr. Garagasa and 2010’s Malayalam-language April Fool. The original film is based on a 1999 French play of the same name. When it was still a stage production, the title was often translated in English as The Prat’s Dinner or The Cunt’s Dinner.
13 ‘The Last House on the Left’ (2009)
The 2009 Wes Craven film is a remake of a 1972 Wes Craven film, which in turn was based on the 1960 Swedish film Jungfrukällan (“the virgin spring”). That film was actually based on a 13th-century Scandinavian ballad, “Töres döttrar i Wänge,” a real mindfreak about the tragic origin of a local Swedish church.

It had been 10 years since director James Cameron and action star Arnold Schwarzenegger struck box office gold with “The Terminator;” they later proved that the pairing wasn’t a fluke with the even more successful sequel “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in 1991. “True Lies” was also a moneymaker, finishing the year 1994 third, behind “The Lion King” and “Forrest Gump.”

Director James Cameron reveals how he scrapped a James Bond-like action sequence from True Lies due to time constraints. The parody of James Bond in True Lies is effective, portraying Schwarzenegger's character as an undercover agent with a ridiculous disguise. True Lies stands as one of the best spy comedies, despite missing out on its own high-action James Bond sequence.
Director James Cameron has revealed how he was forced to scrap a big James Bond-like action sequence from Arnold Schwarzenegger's spy movie True Lies. Based on the 1991 French spy comedy La Totale!, True Lies saw Cameron reunite with his Terminator star as he tackled the role of Harry Tasker, a covert U.S. agent who struggles to keep his double life a secret from his family. Co-starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Arnold, 1994's True Lies is widely considered one of Schwarzenegger's most iconic movies.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger reunited at a charity event, paying tribute to their hit film True Lies, released in 1994. True Lies, directed by James Cameron, became a genre classic and a box office success, starring Schwarzenegger as a spy leading a double life. CBS attempted to adapt True Lies into a TV series, but it was canceled after one season due to low ratings, receiving negative reviews compared to the original film.
Almost 30 years since the premiere of the acclaimed film that brought them together, True Lies, Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger met at a charity event and did not hesitate to take a photo together to pay tribute to the movie.
Released in 1994 and directed by James Cameron, True Lies has become a huge hit. An old school action comedy, True Lies had two Hollywood heavyweights, a strong supporting cast, and did not take long to become a genre classic.

The entertainment business has never been a sure thing. While movies and television shows from specific genres have thrived for a limited period, with so many options for what to watch today, that's not the case anymore. The streaming options developed to such an extent that there is too much content and not enough time to watch it. This has been one of the reasons why so many television shows have been canceled, including the CBS spy show True Lies.
True Lies tells the story of a seemingly ordinary married couple, Helen Tasker (Ginger Gongaza) and Harry Tasker (Steve Howey). Helen is a linguist professor feeling bored with her life which only consists of her job and taking care of the kids and the house. Things quickly take a turn, and excitement and action won't stop happening as Helen discovers that her husband, whom she thought worked in tech sales,...

It’s a tale as old as time… er, 1994: Mild-mannered family man is actually a trained assassin working to rid the world of bad guys, yet his wife and kids think he’s a goofy salesman.

And now CBS has adapted the story into a series, which premiered Wednesday, starring Steve Howey (Shameless) and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and executive-produced by Matt Nix (Burn Notice). If you love James Cameron’s 1994 smash True Lies — the effort to out-Bond the James Bond movies of that period remains evident in every tremendous action set-piece — it’s probably better not to think of CBS’ True Lies as having anything to do with it.
If you hate James Cameron’s 1994 smash True Lies — it’s creepy, misogynistic, xenophobic and the pacing dies for an hour in the middle — it’s probably better not to think of CBS’ True Lies as having anything to do with it.
As a movie, True Lies was a mushroom cloud, every explosion and stunt pushed to a mid-’90s extreme.
As a TV show, CBS’ True Lies is a bottle rocket. The accurate minimization of the series isn’t exactly “cheap,” but it’s definitely “incongruously small.” True Lies is a fizzy throwback that’s closer to something like a Hart to Hart or...

The Swedish film “Force Majeure” was a critically acclaimed darling but not exactly a box office hit. So there was an opportunity to take the film’s black humor and install the American charms of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell to see how it might fare commercially in “Downhill,” opening this weekend. But surprisingly, even box office hits abroad don’t always translate when remade with American actors, and the ones that do rarely resemble their original inspiration. Here are the highest-grossing American remakes of foreign films (all domestic box office figures via Box Office Mojo).
