From ‘The Admiral Broadway Revue’ To ‘Spaceballs’ & ‘Young Frankenstein’: Mel Brooks’ Career On Stage And Screen In Pictures
Image
Mel Brooks has a goal in life. It’s to be funny and make people laugh. In his book, “All About Me!: My Remarkable Life in Show Business,’ he wrote, “Comedy is a very powerful component of life. It has the most to say about the human condition because if you laugh you can get by. You can struggle when things are bad if you have a sense of humor. Laughter is a protest scream against death, against the long goodbye. It’s a defense against unhappiness and depression.”

It’s a mantra that has served Brooks well since it broke into show business as a writer on NBC’s The Admiral Broadway Revue on 1949. He followed that up by working with some of the funniest people in the early years of TV on Your Show of Shows (1950-’54) with his lifelong friend Carl Reiner, The Imogene Coca Show...

This Tim Burton Movie Almost Brought Ryan Reynolds & Reese Witherspoon Together Onscreen—But It Never Happened
Image
Reese Witherspoon Ryan Reynolds Missed Big Eyes Pairing (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds nearly shared the spotlight in Tim Burton’s film. However, the casting stars didn’t quite align. Long ago, the director was developing a biography that veered away from his typical eerie niche. It was titled Big Eyes. That flick told the real tale of painter Margaret Keane and her spouse, Walter.

It went through an uneven road before hitting screens in 2014, too. And along the way? It nearly featured one of the most surprising onscreen pairings ever. It was none other than Reynolds and Witherspoon. Yes, it almost occurred. But that dream duo was recast.

Reese Witherspoon Reveals Almost-Starring Role in Big Eyes

12 Best Reese Witherspoon Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
When Reese Witherspoon first debuted on-screen in the early '90s, nobody could've anticipated she'd become one of the richest women in America (according to Forbes). Her career began as a teen, when an audition for "The Man in the Moon" landed Witherspoon the lead role. The young actress' career blossomed over the next two decades with coming-of-age movies, romantic dramas and comedies, and biopics that proved her acting chops were no fluke.

Beyond her dozens of roles, Witherspoon has also put in the work behind the scenes with her production company HelloSunshine, who have been behind not only Witherspoon's own projects but massive success stories like David Fincher's "Gone Girl." Between her producing resume and her philanthropic efforts, it's no surprise that her career in 2025 is a product of good will and hard work.

As one of the best rom-com actors in all of Hollywood, it's possible that...

6 Years Before Legally Blonde, Reese Witherspoon Almost Played Another Iconic Rom-Com Blonde
Image
Reese Witherspoon almost played Cher in Clueless but ultimately lost the role to Alicia Silverstone. The success of Legally Blonde spawned a franchise, but Witherspoon only returned for the direct sequel. A prequel TV series called Elle, following a teenage Elle Woods, is in the works alongside Legally Blonde 3.

Reese Witherspoon has had various memorable roles on the big screen, among them Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, but she almost played another iconic rom-com blonde six years earlier. Witherspoons acting career began in 1991 with the TV film Wildflower and the coming-of-age movie The Man in the Moon, but her big break arrived with the 1998 teen fantasy comedy-drama Pleasantville. Witherspoons next big role was Annette Hargrove in the teen drama Cruel Intentions the following year, along with Tracy Flick in the black comedy Election.

Witherspoon became one of the most beloved rom-com and teen comedy actresses in 2001 when she starred in Legally Blonde.

Reese Witherspoon’s Film Debut: A 14-Year-Old Star is Born in The Man in the Moon

In 1991, Reese Witherspoon made her cinematic debut in the coming-of-age drama The Man in the Moon, notably the final film directed by the acclaimed Robert Mulligan.

Reese Witherspoon’s Film Debut at 14

Reese Witherspoon recalls seeing a newspaper ad seeking a 14-year-old Southern girl for a movie role. After auditioning, she didn’t hear back for a month. Then, after returning from softball practice, her mom informed her that she was called for a screen test in Los Angeles.

Her audition impressed director Robert Mulligan, and she was offered the central role of tomboy Dani Trant. He admitted casting the Louisiana-born, Tennessee-raised actress in The Man on the Moon was risky.

“We had a casting team that went out and saw several thousand kids and tested them on video. When I saw Reese’s test,...

Reese Witherspoon movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

Ever since, Witherspoon has proven to be a incredibly likable and laudable presence on the big screen and,...

Reese Witherspoon has established herself as a major force in the film and television industry through her production company, Hello Sunshine. Witherspoon is committed to telling diverse stories, particularly those focused on women, and wants to create content that inspires girls and women. 19-Year-Old Reese Witherspoon Felt She ‘Didn’t Have Control Over’ Her intimate Scene in Fear
Image
Reese Witherspoon overcame her Fear and has since become one of Hollywood’s elite talents. Five years prior to the aforementioned 1996 thriller, which was directed by James Foley, Witherspoon made her film debut in the heralded The Man in the Moon. However, Fear was much maligned by critics. The movie fared only slightly better with audiences, and Witherspoon didn’t care for the sex scene she had to share with co-star Mark Wahlberg on-screen.

“I didn’t have control over it,” Witherspoon said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “It wasn’t explicit in the script that that’s what was going to happen, so that was something that I think the director thought of on his own. And then [Foley] asked me on set if I would do it, and I said no. It wasn’t a particularly great experience.”

Witherspoon was only 19 years old when she shot Fear.

Rise Of The Guardians Voice Cast Guide: What The Characters Look Like In Real Life
Image
The Rise of the Guardians voice cast is full of recognizable A-list actors. Released in 2012, Rise of the Guardians is a DreamWorks animated feature that revolves around the Avengers of childhood heroes: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman. The Guardians reluctantly team up with Jack Frost to prevent the villainous Pitch Black from destroying the world with darkness. The screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning Rabbit Hole playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is adapted from the book series The Guardians of Childhood and William Joyce’s short film The Man in the Moon.

Rise of the Guardians marked the feature-length directorial debut of Peter Ramsey, who later rose to prominence with his Oscar-winning work as the co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Although it was a box office disappointment (via Vulture), Rise of the Guardians was well-received by critics, who praised its heart and imagination. The film earned nominations...

Why Rise Of The Guardians Bombed At The Box Office
Image
American animation is in an odd place. For creators, directors, and animators, the overriding cultural stigma against animation — that it's just for kids — probably provides a great deal of frustration. That's a joke even the Oscars make. It's a perception that limits the medium and reduces any potentially heady thematic material to something bland and easily digestible. Any material directed towards adults shifts into a mélange of innuendo and pop culture references, and children are condescended to in much the same way.

But even the movies that seem tailor-made for children's sensibilities get lost in the shuffle sometimes. 2012's "Rise of the Guardians," for instance, had a slam-dunk premise and an epic scale. It was a movie that took the fears of children seriously while also providing wildly entertaining set pieces, with beautiful animation and a star-studded cast. And yet, according to The Numbers, it didn't even make its production budget back domestically.

Lord of the Rings: The Many Ways Tolkien Songs Have Shown Up in Movies, TV, and More
Image
Music has always played an important role in Tolkien adaptations. J.A. Bayona, producer and director on Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, told Den of Geek last year that he played music on set for the actors to help them get “the right tone” for their characters, and that “there’s an… obvious sense of musicality when you read the books” which is “all about language and the beauty of language.” The show’s season one finale even featured a new musical setting for Tolkien’s “Rhyme of the Rings,” written by Bear McCreary and performed by Fiona Apple, which was generally well-received by fans.

Anyone who has read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings knows that the books are full of songs. Aragorn sings old Elvish ballads, Bilbo is quite the composer, the Dwarves have songs about their ancient mines, the Rohirrim love melancholic battle epics,...

5 Ways Elle Woods Is Reese Witherspoon's Best Role (& 5 Better Alternatives)
Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon has been gracing the screen since her 1991 debut in The Man in the Moon. She played several roles in teen movies during the late 90s, garnering critical acclaim for her turn as Tracy Flick in 1999's Election. But it was her performance as Elle Woods in 2001's Legally Blonde that shot her to stardom.

The movie turned her into an A-lister, a status she cemented with her Oscar-winning turn in 2005's Walk the Line. These days she has a prolific career as a movie and television producer besides her successful acting career, but Elle will always hold a special place in her filmography. It might still be her best role to date, but she has numerous other contenders for the coveted title.

The 3 TV faces of Reese: Type-a suburban mom (‘Little Fires Everywhere’), no-filter TV host (‘The Morning Show’) and pushy unfaithful spouse (‘Big Little Lies’) — take your pick! [Poll]

It feels like we all are having a Reese Witherspoon moment this Emmy season while celebrating a culmination of what the actress has achieved since her coming-of-age film debut in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon.” She may be nominated for six Emmys as both an actress and a producer this year for Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere,” Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” and HBO’s second season of “Big Little Lies.” What is interesting is how each of her roles feature strands of other parts she has played to perfection on the big screen.

Yes, she won a Best Actress Oscar as country singer June Carter Cash in the 2005 biopic “Walk the Line.” It’s the type of female performance that I have dubbed in the past as a “stand-by-your-man” role, as she kept Joaquin Phoenix‘s Johnny Cash to away from drugs and encouraged him to stay...

‘Little Fires Everywhere’: How Hello Sunshine Picks Tales of Complex Women and Creates Powerful TV
Reese Witherspoon
When asked what enticed Lauren Neustadter to accept the job as Hello Sunshine’s head of Film and Television there was just one reason: “It’s Reese Witherspoon.” Growing up as a young girl in Louisiana, before Neustadter even thought of a career in entertainment, she was watching Witherspoon in the 1991 feature “The Man in the Moon,” admiring the skill it took to act out complex emotions.

Now that Neustadter and Witherspoon are working on adapting and producing series and movies those emotions are at the center of every choice they make. Their latest offering, out today on Hulu, is a limited-series adaptation of Celeste Ng’s novel “Little Fires Everywhere” focusing on a nomadic woman named Mia (Kerry Washington) who butts heads with the elegant Elena (Witherspoon). The series navigates a variety of topics, from race to femininity, motherhood and class, and for Hello Sunshine nuance is the name of the game.

Mariah Carey
Rylo Rodriguez Is a Rapper Remaking R&b in His Own Image
Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey. Tamia. Ruth B. Leon Bridges… And, now, Rylo Rodriguez.

For the last year, in a small but substantial corner of YouTube, a Mobile, Alabama rapper has furiously sought to place himself within a lineage of R&b and soul music, despite not possessing any of the technical vocal qualities — range, diction, consistently hitting notes — that tie this disparate group of singers together.

In the hands of Rodriguez, Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” is re-contextualized as a tale about poverty and violence titled “Project Baby.” The song, from the melody to its cadence,...

Reese Witherspoon movies: 12 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘Legally Blonde,’ ‘Election,’ ‘Walk the Line’
Reese Witherspoon

The Man in the Moon (1991)
Robert Mulligan’s late career gem is a beautiful, fad-free tale of teenage romance with universal appeal, famed for introducing Reese Witherspoon to the screen. She’s truly a sensation, as is the actress Emily Warfield as the older sister who ‘steals’ Reese’s beau. Photographed by Freddie Francis, this tops even Mulligan’s To Kill a Mockingbird.

Watch Reese Witherspoon's Big Return to Rom-Coms In First 'Home Again' Trailer
Back in 1991, a young Reese Witherspoon made a remarkably assured dramatic debut in the nostalgic The Man in the Moon. She made a memorable mark in Alexander Payne's Election, but she really broke into the mainstream with her bright and sunny performance as Elle Woods in the broad comedy Legally Blonde. A few years later, she earned an Academy Award for her sterling performance in Walk the Line and since then has continued to impress with her dramatic abilities in movies like Mud and, especially Wild, the latter of which earned her another Oscar nomination. Recently she again turned heads as part of the talented ensemble cast in HBO's Big Little Lies. Having all those roles in mind, the first trailer for the romantic comedy Home Again almost feels like a cold splash of...

August 9th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Basket Case Sequels, 11.22.63, Baskin
August 9th is an interesting day for horror home entertainment releases, as we have two titles I never could have imagined arriving on Blu-ray, and that’s always a great thing for fans.

Synapse Films has given both of Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case sequels an HD overhaul, and for those who may have missed the Turkish horror movie Baskin during its release earlier this year, Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have teamed up for the film’s Blu-ray / DVD combo pack, which arrives on Tuesday as well.

Other notable releases on August 9th include 11.22.63, Dark Waves, and Alone in the Ghost House.

Basket Case 2 (Synapse Films, Blu-ray)

Duane Bradley and his surgically-separated twin brother Belial return in this frightfully gory follow-up to Frank Henenlotter’s original monster movie classic, Basket Case. After surviving a fall from a hospital window, the two brothers become media targets.

Ivanhoe (1913) Starring St. Louisan King Baggot – September 28th at The Missouri History Museum with Live Music
The King Baggot Tribute will take place Wednesday September 28th at 7pm at Lee Auditorium inside the Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri). The 1913 silent film Ivanhoe will be accompanied by The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra and there will be a 40-minute illustrated lecture on the life and career of King Baggot by We Are Movie Geeks’ Tom Stockman.

By 1913, the American film industry had been around for over twenty years. In 1909 Carl Laemmle, a renegade and maverick movie mogul and film distributor, founded his own company in New York — the Yankee Film Company. Laemmle also started producing movies in Fort Lee, New Jersey that same year. His first company was called the Independent Motion Pictures (Imp) Company, aka Imp Studios. Soon however, Laemmle would be making plans to journey West where he would expand his film production and in 1912 co-founded the Universal Film Manufacturing Co.

The King Baggot Tribute Returns to St. Louis – The Missouri History Museum Sept. 28th
The King Baggot Tribute will take place Wednesday September 28th at 7pm at Lee Auditorium inside the Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri). The 1913 silent film Ivanhoe will be accompanied by The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra and there will be a 40-minute illustrated lecture on the life and career of King Baggot by Tom Stockman of We Are Movie Geeks.com. This event is Free!

The most popular film actor in the world 100 years ago was a St. Louis native. Literally the first “movie star”, King Baggot was the first actor to have his name above the title and his stardom marked the first time that audiences went to see a movie because a certain actor was in that film. Born in St. Louis in 1879 and raised in a house on Union Boulevard, King Baggot attended CBC High School and at one time worked for the St. Louis Browns in ticket sales. Baggot was tall and handsome, a blue-eyed Irish boy with a distinctive white streak through his dark hair and the subject of much adoring fan mail. It’s hard to overestimate just how popular King Baggot was in his prime. He was heralded as “King of the Movies,” “The Most Photographed Man in the World” and “The Man Whose Face Is As Familiar As The Man In The Moon.” After his acting career faded, King Baggot became a successful director for Universal Studios. Most of his films are long lost and despite his one-time fame, he is now somewhat forgotten, even here in his home town.

The Missouri History Museum will shine a spotlight on the star with The King Baggot Tribute, a celebration of his career. The event will be held on Wednesday, September 28th beginning at 7pm at Lee Auditorium inside the Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri). This is a Free event!

The program will consist a rare screening of the 1913 epic Ivanhoe, which runs 49 minutes. We screened Ivanhoe at the King Baggot Tribute that was part of The St. Louis International Film Festival in November of 2014. That time, we rented a 35mm print of the film from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It had Dutch intertitles, so I had to translate them, from the podium, while the rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra accompanied the film. This time, we have transferred the film to digital format and have burned English intertitles over the Dutch ones.

Based Sir Walter Scott’s 1820 novel of romance and medievalism. Ivanhoe was filmed at Chepstow Castle in Wales, on top of cliffs overlooking the River Wye and was the first example of an American studio sending a cast and crew to Europe to film at a remote location. St. Louis native King Baggot plays Ivanhoe, the Saxon Knight who returns from the Holy Lands to England. There he teams up with Robin Hood to rescue his father Sir Cedric, who has been captured by the evil Prince John. Leah Baird plays Rebecca, the Jewish maiden who loves Ivanhoe and the film’s director Herbert Brenon co-stars as Isaac of York. The rest of the large cast was made up of local Welsh actors. The lively and ambitious Ivanhoe, filled with pageantry, lavish sets, costumed horses, epic battle scenes and swordfights was a box-office smash in 1913 and made King Baggot an international star.

Don’t miss the The King Baggot Tribute September 28th!
