Queen Latifah started her music career in the late 1980s, beatboxing for the famed New York/New Jersey music collective the Flavor Unit. By 1989, she already had released her first single, "Wrath of My Madness," overseen by start producer Fab 5 Freddy. Her rap songs soon began getting a great deal of airplay, and she became a celebrity on "Yo! MTV Raps." Only a few years into her professional music career, Latifah branched out into acting, first appearing in Spike Lee's 1991 film "Jungle Fever." She was in mainstream Hollywood comedies like "House Party 2" and "Who's the Man?," while also appearing in dramas like "Juice" and "My Life."
Latifah's star-making turn came in 1996, playing the role of Cleo in F. Gary Gray's "Set It Off," a hard-edged L.A. heist movie that also starred Jada Pinkett and Vivica A. Fox. From that point foward, she was a force to be reckoned with.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

“Comedy is what takes us away from all the pain and all the hurt and all the turmoil that goes on in life. It takes us away from that, even if only for a brief second, a brief moment.” Maybe you wouldn’t expect this level of depth from a man who’s made a career of being silly. Something else you might not expect? Even 30 years into his comedy career, he was still possessed by a nervous energy before getting on the stage for his 2016 special. So much of what has made Martin Lawrence successful is his ability to channel that nervous energy into something great and, more importantly, something funny.
But what drives that energy? For Martin, it may be the very pain, hurt, and turmoil he’s trying to help us escape. Despite his success, Martin’s life has been marked by challenges, from a difficult childhood to high-profile controversies.

“65” (Sony) and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery), both $19.99, were the sole new entries on VOD charts on an otherwise static week. However, three’s a trend: The new titles join last week’s “Creed III” in arriving on PVOD in 28 days or fewer after their theatrical releases.
As home-release strategies evolve, it’s clear that distributors love that lucrative PVOD revenue. At the same time, these charts reinforce the idea that playing in theaters elevates these titles.
“65” was a modest theatrical performer ($31 million in 31 days), but with its sci-fi genre and Adam Driver as the lead it can draw early home viewers. And since Sony doesn’t own a streamer, it has more incentive to maximize VOD.
“Shazam” sequel after 21 days is atypical for Wbd, especially for a DC title. After Wbd ended its disruptive same-day theatrical/HBO Max strategy, the studio said any theatrical...

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

Film production in Greater Los Angeles surged during the third quarter of 2021, according to a new report by FilmLA. The increase in shooting marks the third strongest quarter in twenty-six years, with a total of 10,127 shoot days. The last time the region saw filming levels this high was in the fourth quarter of 2018, which boasted 10,359 shoot days.
Compared to last year which was still being impacted by the pandemic and shutdowns, total production rose 141.2 percent.
“The biggest takeaway from this report is that the pace of local production continues to increase,” observed FilmLA President Paul Audley. “The late-pandemic recovery is uneven in some ways, but community receptiveness to filming is steady and the work opportunities are undeniably there.”
Looking at the major production categories tracked by FilmLA, the pace of feature film production quickened the most in Q3 of 2021, growing 33.5 percent over Q2. Among those productions were Paramount Pictures’ “Wild Chickens,...

UTA has signed cultural landmark the Apollo Theater in all areas.
Located in New York’s Harlem community, the Apollo Theater has been known as the “soul of American culture” for nearly nine decades. The nonprofit theater has collaborated with artists and other cultural organizations to create and present work that centers around Black voices. UTA will help expand the Apollo Theater’s cultural influence, representation, and programming across TV, film, podcasts, publishing and events through its expansive IP.
Most recently, the Apollo’s executive producer, Kamilah Forbes, directed and executive produced a television special based on Ta-Nehisi Coates’ memoir, Between the World and Me, which premiered on HBO and HBO Max. Prior to the TV premiere, Forbes conceived and directed the stage adaptation for the Apollo Theater in 2018 and 2019. Coates was announced as the theater’s inaugural Master Artist-in-Residence in 2019, enabling the Apollo to offer him a home for his work and ideas.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.

“Charm City Kings” won over many critics in its Sundance premiere earlier this year, and likely would have been doing the same in Texas this week if it were showing, as planned, at the canceled South by Southwest Film Festival. It’ll still get its chance to charm general audiences as well as critical gatekeepers, who have been impressed so far not just by actor Jahi Di’Allo Winston’s standout performance as main character “Mouse,” but by rapper Meek Mill, who gives a breakout supporting turn in the film, his first as an actor.
“It was a good experience for me,” Meek tells Variety. “I enjoyed it and it was a learning experience,” added the 32-year-old star, before saying he’d likely be doing more acting in the near future.

New Line Cinema's remake of the 90s comedy classic House Party has just taken a major step forward. The studio has tapped Calmatic, the director of Lil Nas X's Old Town Road music video, to make his feature directorial debut with the project. NBA star LeBron James, who has been making inroads in Hollywood, is set to produce the remake via his SpringHill Entertainment production company.
According to a new report, Calmatic landed the gig not long after winning an MTV Video Music Award for his work on Old Town Road. The Lil Nas X single, the remix version featuring country music icon Billy Ray Cyrus, recently had a record-breaking run at the top of the Billboard charts, and much of that was thanks to the star-studded video, which included a cameo from Chris Rock. 28 years after the first House Party movie hit theaters, New Line is returning to the franchise with a new House Party movie from NBA superstar LeBron James. While no director is attached at this time, LeBron James will produce with his SpringHill Entertainment partner, Maverick Carter, with the duo setting Atlanta writers Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori to write the screenplay. Here's what LeBron James had to say in a statement, stressing that this project is not a full reboot.
"This is definitely not a reboot. It's an entirely new look for a classic movie. Everyone I grew up with loved House Party. To partner with this creative team to bring a new House Party to a new generation is unbelievable."
No plot details have surfaced at this time, but LeBron James' producing partner Maverick Carter did hint that there could be quite the star-studded soundtrack, stating that, "we're trying...

Tony Burton, who played the boxing trainer Tony "Duke" Evers in the long-running Rocky movie franchise, passed away in Los Angeles earlier today, at the age of 78. M Live confirmed the actor's death with his sister, Loretta "Peaches" Kelly. His sister revealed that the actor had been hospitalized several times over the past year, but he was never officially diagnosed with any illness at the time of his death. Due to his health, the actor was never able to see the Rocky spinoff Creed.
Tony Burton was born March 23, 1937 in Flint, Michigan, USA, and long before he portrayed Apollo Creed's (Carl Weathers) trainer Duke in all six Rocky movies, the actor was a boxer himself. Tony Burton won two Flint Golden Gloves trophies in the light heavyweight division in 1955 and 1957, after excelling in football and baseball for Flint Northern High School. He went on to box professionally, with a 16-3 professional boxing record,...

Upon the Los Angeles Film Festival announcing their 2013 roster I was excited to see a title familiar to me that would be having its world premiere there. That film is 'The House That Jack Built' – from a screenplay written by Joseph B. Vasquez (Hangin' With The Homeboys) that I'd read close to 15 years earlier as an intern and it was rumored that it would be a Spike Lee/John Leguizamo collaboration. The film itself is a 20 year old journey in the making for the producers. The story revolves around Jack, a Puerto Rican drug dealer who yearns for those long gone memories of what was once a happy, united family where he remembers everything as ethereal-like. So he decides to buy a tenement where they can all be under the same roof in hopes of re-creating that joy, when in reality it will never be the same again as his well intentioned gesture tests the families bond to the point of irreparable dysfunction.
The joy for me at the time was reading the last screenplay written by Joe before he passed away in 1995. My friends and I used to quote the hell out of 'Hangin' With The Homeboys' and laugh at the way he wrote these richly drawn urban characters that could walk a very fine line and he was never afraid to push a few buttons when it came to sex, race and class. He knew the comedy in tragedy. The melancholy in reading his last screenplay was that it was his last screenplay.
Born to drug addicted parents in the South Bronx, Joseph started making movies on a Super 8mm camera at the age of 12. Eventually this would lead him to study film at City College in New York where he honed his craft and would later make a low budget, gritty, if not unwatchable film called 'Street Story' (later barely released as 'Street Hitz') where according to Joe, he was writer, director, cinematographer, editor, sound editor, gaffer, negative cutter and music editor. Working with a slightly larger budget and a little more experience his next film would be 'The Bronx War' (which I own on DVD courtesy of a spot on 125th st). It was another film with a story line firmly cemented in the street life that he was familiar and comfortable with. 'The Bronx War' would be the one to catch the attention of New Line Cinema. After all, there weren't many Puerto Rican/Black filmmakers coming out of the Bronx, especially ones that spoke to the surging urban market like he did. They would decide to finance a semi-autobiographical screenplay he wrote in about three days called 'Hangin' With The Homeboys' about an epic, odyssey-like guys night out in New York City with four friends. Each of the four characters represented a different part of Vasquez. He was now making a film for a studio and not paying for it out of his own pocket. But Joseph's life played out much like one of his screenplays. During the shoot, he was slashed down the middle of his forehead to his nose by a homeless man as he took the subway to the set, ending what he believed could have been another career as an actor. The tension on the set was unbearable according to his leads. Still, the film was completed and premiered at the '91 Sundance Film Festival to great success and even walked away with a best screenwriting award. Joseph, suffering from severe Bi-polar disorder started to grow wary of studios like New Line Cinema, the very studio that helped him achieve the success he had enjoyed and started turning down projects such as 'House Party 2', citing that the films had gotten too big and were slipping away from his creative and artistic grasp. Instead he opted to do things his own way as before. A result was 'Manhattan Merengue'. This film, understandably failed to move his career to the next level and Joseph began suffering from manic depression when the offers that once presented themselves to him stopped coming in. Once thought to be the next Spike Lee (a comparison he didn't care for), he alienated those around him and at some later point claimed to be Jesus. His behavior became increasingly erratic and drew great concern from those around him as his health deteriorated. At the time no one knew he had AIDS, to which he would succumb to far from the South Bronx he loved and wrote about. At aged 33 he passed away in San Diego, CA. penniless but with his mother, who got clean, by his side.
Producer Mike Lieber, who had known Joe for many years including during his tumultuous times, held on to the script of 'The House That Jack Built', hoping that one day he could finally get it made. It was something he promised Joseph on his death bed that he would do. After attaching Cuban-American, Henry Barrial (Pig) to direct, they raised a budget that was enough to cover a shoot on HD and raised the rest on Kickstarter to bring it home. Casting was primarily done in the Bronx with E.J Bonilla (Four, Mamitas) cast to play 'Jack' and joined by an all Latino cast that includes Melissa Fumero, Leo Minaya, Saundra Santiago, John Herrera, Flor De Liz Perez and Rosal Colon.
Mike Lieber fulfilled his promise and Joseph Benjamin Vasquez' new film will premiere at The Los Angeles Film Festival which runs June 13-23. Tickets can be bought at http://www.lafilmfest.com . Give them a “Like”: https://www.facebook.com/thehousethatjackbuiltmovie.

If you’re a fan of Nakatomi Inc’s Tim Doyle, then there’s every reason to believe that you’re already familiar with the artist’s Unreal Estate series: unveiled last year, it was easily the best idea Doyle’s had for a series in years (the first round of posters were based on The Simpsons and Arrested Development), and the final products—some of them cleverly-designed Glow-in-The-Dark variants-- really do compose some of his best work. Well, good news for those of you who’re already onboard with this idea! This Friday, our friends at Spoke Art will unveil the latest installment of Doyle’s Unreal Estate series, and—from the looks of the preview images we’ve got for you after the jump—Unreal Estate 2 seems primed to make House Party 2 look like House Party 3 (or something like that; just click the damn link and...

So the gods do grant wishes. Here, at last, are the results of a survey to decide which film Brad's barnet looked best in
In recent years, thanks to revelatory turns in the likes of Moneyball, The Tree of Life and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Brad Pitt has finally turned into the actor he always promised to be. Add to this his exemplary clutch of films as producer and it's clear that we're dealing with a heavyweight; a true connoisseur of film. But despite all this, one nagging question lingers.
That's right: which is Brad Pitt's most iconic haircut?
No, seriously. Brad Pitt has made dozens of movies, for which he's required dozens of haircuts. By default, if nothing else, one of them has to be the most iconic. The question isn't as insulting or reductive as you think it is, either. Cast...

Last February, during a swing through South Korea, Rihanna told MTV Asia that she had dreams of becoming a Hollywood superstar.
"I would love to get into comedic movies," the 22-year-old said. "As well as action. I love action. I would love to play a badass one day."
Well, a badass she very well might be, as she's signed onto "Battleship," a sci-fi action flick based on the classic board game and co-starring Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgård. Of course, this isn't the first time a celebrated singer has ditched the recording studio for the soundstage. As Rihanna boards "Battleship," she joins a long line of artists-turned-actresses. Today Universal released Get Him to the Greek, a sort-of sequel to 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it uses Aldous Snow who had a small role in the original. Beyond that, there is only a brief reference to Sarah Marshall, which has me thinking it's not really a sequel as much as it is a spin-off. The same could be said for a movie like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)... Same characters, but not really a sequel to Clerks, which ended up having its own sequel in 2006.
In a debate with a group of fellow Seattle critics trying to decide if Get Him to the Greek was a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or not, the topic turned to comedy sequels in general and I was asked to name a great comedy sequel. Should be easy... right?

If this actually happens, I’ll… I’ll… I’ll…
Actually, there isn’t shit I can do, other than not see it, and encourage you all to do the same.
The good folks at Pajiba (a usually reliable source) are reporting that hack director Brett Ratner (the Rush Hour movies) is actually developing a House Party remake. No, April Fool’s day was over a week ago. This one appears to be for real.
Of all the ideas… of all the movies to remake, House Party is one that I would never, in my wildest dreams, think would get the remake treatment.
Why? Will Kid ‘n Play reprise their roles? I don’t exactly see how. The House Party movies were really just ad hoc vehicles for Kid ‘n Play. They were like extended Kid ‘n Play commercials. I haven’t seen any of them in a really long time,...

And you thought Oliver Stone’s W. wasted little time in addressing current political issues. Hardly over a year since his President Barack Obama’s inauguration, there’s already a fast-tracked movie based around his 2008 presidential campaign. Variety reports that Love, Barack is ready to roll, with its two leads, Laz Alonso (Miracle at St. Anna, Avatar) and Mallika Sherawat (a huge Bollywood star looking for worldwide exposure) in place. The politically-minded romantic comedy will be directed by New Jack City producer Doug McHenry, whose past directing efforts include 1991’s House Party 2 and 1994’s sporadically impressive Jason’s Lyric.
Love, Barack will see Sherawat playing a volunteer coordinator for Team Obama who falls head over heels for a John McCain-supoorting Republican go-getter (Alonso). Take a guess how it’ll all end.
Typically, this kind of project would elicit little more than yawns and indifference around these parts, but Love,...

If you're a fan of musical theatre or novelty wedding dances and are possessed by a burning desire to embarrass yourself in public, have we got a promotion for you! In celebration of the DVD and Blu-ray releases of the hit movie musical Mamma Mia!, Universal is making a bid to form the world's largest conga line.
You can join in the fun over at mammamiacongaline.com. Just be careful: A similar stunt was attempted in 1991, when producers of Kid 'n Play's House Party 2 staged a massive public rendition of the Running Man, featuring dancers on all seven continents. All seemed fine until several overzealous members of the Antarctica contingent slipped on the icy surface and broke their necks. To this day, neither Kid nor Play are allowed to set foot on the continent.
