Oscars 2025: The Good, The Bad & The Fugly
Image
Whether it was Zoe Saldaña calling out her husband’s beautiful hair during her acceptance speech or June Squibb claiming that she’s really Bill Skarsgård in drag, the 97th Oscars on Sunday were chock-full of good, bag and fugly moments.

Here are all the moments that made us go hmmm.

So Good: Oscar gave a collective hug to fire victims by opening the show with a chill-inducing ode to our beloved L.A. with iconic moments from Rocky III, La La Land, Grand Canyon, La Bamba and The Big Lebowski, followed with gorgeous performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

So bad it was good: It felt a little strange to transition out of such a sentimental opener to the image of “four-time Oscar viewer” Conan O’Brien crawling out of Demi Moore’s corpse.

A Cinematic Legend Has The Most Oscars In History
Image
One might think, looking at the above headline, that this will be an article about the legendary composer John Williams, but that is not the case. Williams, perhaps shockingly, has only won five Oscars in his decades-long career, specifically for "Fiddler on the Roof," "Jaws," "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," and "Schindler's List." The famed composer, however, has been nominated for more Oscars than anyone in history (save for one), having been recognized 54 times since 1968. Williams' most recent nomination was for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."

Others might also think of director John Ford or actor Katharine Hepburn as the most decorated talents in Oscars history, but they each only have four wins to their names. To be fair, winning four Oscars in one's field is still a huge achievement. Also, Ford holds the record as the most awarded director, and Hepburn the most awarded actor.

Frank Griffin, who nosed out another makeup artist to work with Steve Martin on Roxanne, just one of the 20 movies they did together, has died. He was 95.

Griffin died Wednesday of cancer at his home in Studio City, his daughter Roxane Griffin, a veteran Hollywood hairstylist (Avatar, Transparent, 80 for Brady), told The Hollywood Reporter.

Tool Give Surprise Performance at A Perfect Circle-Puscifer-Primus Show
Image
Maynard James Keenan has been celebrating his 60th birthday all month with two of his bands — A Perfect Circle and Puscifer — along with Primus on the “Sessanta” tour. On Saturday night (April 20th) at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, fans were treated to all three of Keenan’s bands when Tool gave a surprise performance toward the end of the concert.

The tour usually has a no-video policy until the last song of the night, which is Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” but Keenan said from the stage that he would permit filming of the next song because he had “picked up some strays” to join him onstage. At that point, Tool’s Danny Carey, Adam Jones, and Justin Chancellor walked out to the delight of the fans.

Walt Disney Still Holds An Unprecedented Oscar Record 53 Years After His Last Nomination
Image
Walt Disney holds the record for most Academy Awards with 22 wins, including four honorary ones. The closest living competitor to Disney's record is Dennis Muren with nine wins. Disney's impressive Oscar record may never be beaten, solidifying his legacy in the entertainment industry.

Disney movies are recipients of various awards, and Walt Disney himself has an unbelievable Oscar record that hasn’t been beaten in over five decades since his last nomination. Walt Disney changed the world of entertainment with the creation of The Walt Disney Company in 1923, which would go on to become a powerhouse in the world of animation and family-friendly content, though the studio has made all types of movies from different genres and for viewers of all ages.

Disney’s reign in the world of animation started in 1928 with the debut of Mickey Mouse in the studio’s first sound film, Steamboat Willie, but the one...

Margia Dean, B-Movie Actress Known for ‘The Quatermass Xperiment’ and More, Dies at 101
Image
Margia Dean, who co-starred in the cult sci-fi classic The Quatermass Xperiment and appeared alongside the likes of Clint Eastwood, Vincent Price, Esther Williams and George Reeves in other movies, has died. She was 101.

Dean died June 23 in her apartment in Rancho Cucamonga, California, her niece Denyse Barr told The Hollywood Reporter.

From 1948-56, Dean worked in about 20 features for producer Robert L. Lippert, founder of the B-movie studio Lippert Pictures, thus earning the nickname “The Queen of Lippert.”

She acted for Sam Fuller in two of those films, the first two features he ever directed, in fact — I Shot Jesse James (1949), in which she portrayed a saloon singer, and the Price-starring The Baron of Arizona (1950).

Based on a popular BBC serial, Hammer Films’ The Quatermass Xperiment (1956), directed by Val Guest and starring Brian Donlevy, told the story of an astronaut (Richard Wordsworth) who crash-lands back on Earth and...

‘Fangs Out’ Review
Image
Stars: Stacy Aung, Heidi Hemlock, Brian Easter Jr., Marlene Mc’Cohen, Samuel Code, Randy Oppenheimer, Jessie Vane, Veronica Ricci | Written by Dennis Devine, Drake Cola | Directed by Dennis Devine

If you’re familiar with Sterling Films then you’ll know what you’re getting into as soon as you see their name during the opening credits for Fangs Out (not to be confused with Fanged Up). For those that aren’t, it means a micro to no budget film shot in someone’s backyard with no production values to speak of. For fans of microbudget films, it doesn’t necessarily mean a bad film, but if you can’t deal with this level of DIY cinema you’ll want to find something else to watch.

For those that stick with it, Fangs Out follows four friends, Madison, Allana (Heidi Hemlock) and her boyfriend (Brian Easter Jr.) and Skylar as they head to Mexico for Spring Break.

Watch: 'Grands Canons' Short Film - A Symphony of Everyday Objects
Image
Take a mesmerizing journey through the world of everyday objects in this hypnotizing animated short film. Grands Canons (not to be confused with the Grand Canyon) is a short film from French filmmaker / artist Alain Biet. Superimposed, condensed, multiplied, thousands of documentary drawings in successive series come to life on the screen, composing a veritable visual symphony of everyday objects. The film is made up of thousands upon thousands of hand-painted images of every day objects, from bulbs to phones to pipes to keys to tools to electronics to utensils to everything else you can think of. The name translates to Big Guns, which is a bit of an odd odd title for this. It originally premiered at film festivals back in 2018 and has been playing around for years before finally ending up online for everyone to enjoy. The perfect detailing in every single painting is just extraordinary; I'd like...

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ (2019) Movie Review
Image
The Dead Don´t Die is a movie written and directed by Jim Jarmusch it has an exceptional cast headed by Bill Murray. And, Adam Driver, of course.

So we have seen this funny movie that is intelligent as well. Good lines and lots of irony in The Dead Don´t Die.

Storyline

In the small town of Centerville, the citizens have to face a… plague of living dead. When Earth deviates from its axis… ugly things happen.

The Movie The Dead Don’t Die (2019)

Jim Jarmusch´s usual irony, with the sardonic touch added by Bill Murray. A movie inside a movie that laughs at itself. It is still just a zombie movie, okay… but this is entertaining and it has its political and social satire.

The movie is an apparent amusement that is rather heavy handed with a much deeper irony. Lots of dark humor (lots and lots). It...

Kevin Kline Felt A Bit Spoiled On The Set Of Sophie's Choice
Image
After a decade of sensational work in New York City theater (for which he won two Tony Awards), Kevin Kline was at last ready to make his motion picture debut. He couldn't have chosen a buzzier project than Alan J. Pakula's "Sophie's Choice," a shattering drama based on the National Book Award-winning novel by William Styron. Pakula had been wowed by Kline's bravura performance in the 1981 Broadway revival of "The Pirates of Penzance," and believed the effervescent actor could capture the alternating charm and terror of Nathan Landau, a seemingly brilliant chemist engaged in an abusive love affair with Sophie, a Polish immigrant haunted by a horrible sacrifice she was forced to make during the Holocaust.

For the part of Sophie, Pakula was torn between the brilliant Norwegian actor Liv Ullman and the unknown-in-the-u.S. Slovakian performer Magdaléna Vášáarová. Unfortunately for these two, Meryl Streep had serious designs on the role,...

‘Light & Magic’: Lawrence Kasdan Reunites with George Lucas to Tell the Story of Ilm – Toolkit
Image
As a young writer, Lawrence Kasdan made a name for himself scripting three of the most beloved cinematic spectacles of all time: “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and “Return of the Jedi.” When he moved into the director’s chair, however, his best work tended toward modestly scaled humanist dramas and comedies like “The Big Chill,” “The Accidental Tourist,” and “Grand Canyon,” films more concerned with asking deep philosophical questions about how we live our lives (and why) than with pyrotechnics or heightened acts of heroism.

With his latest work, the six-part Disney+ documentary series “Light & Magic,” Kasdan has reconciled the two sides of his filmmaking sensibility to tell a sweeping story of spectacular technology through a personal lens. The show follows the evolution of the most influential special effects house in the history of cinema, Industrial Light & Magic, through an expertly assembled combination of...

The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 21 Review: The Man from G.R.A.M.P.A.
Image
This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.

The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 21

Abe comes in from the cold on The Simpsons Season 32, episode 21, because it’s cold. “The Man from G.R.A.M.P.A.” is a tepid espionage chiller about an increasingly insignificant spy, but a room with a working window at the Springfield Retirement Home lies in the balance.

The episode opens with the uneasy soundtrack of intrigue as the titles tell us we are in London in 1970 at the office of the MI5. The British spies are toasting their youngest and brightest star, Terrance, voiced by Stephen Fry, who also voices the Head of the MI5, and will go on to voice his own father and daughter. He is that kind of spy, an Englishman unafraid to dress in drag. His then-most recent operation in Prague only left 11 dead, which for British Intelligence is barely a parking ticket.

Or perhaps the name is a reference to the size of the secret Maggie’s mom is keeping from her? Or the largeness of the trouble Andrew is brewing at Regina’s restaurant?

Which lead actress is most in need of overdue Oscar attention? Saoirse Ronan, Scarlett Johansson or Alfre Woodard? [Poll]
Saoirse Ronan at an event for Les âmes vagabondes (2013)
A quintet of leading ladies listed on Gold Derby’s combined odds list of Academy Award predictions all qualify as being overdue for a Oscar statuette. Most have been nominated before while one former vampire lover has never been in the running. Here, in order of their current placement among lead actress contenders on the site, are those who might go on to give a speech at the ceremony on Feb. 9, 2020.

1. Saoirse Ronan, “Little Women”: The Irish actress follows in the bookish Civil War-era footsteps of Katharine Hepburn, June Allyson and Winona Ryder — the actresses who most notably played Jo, the headstrong and ambitious March sister — in the 1933, 1949 and 1994 big-screen adaptations of Louisa May Alcott’s novel “Little Women.” Ryder was nominated for Lead Actress and Ronan just might do the same. These highly-profitable adventures paved the way for him to make his directorial debut with the steamy neo-noir “Body Heat” (1981), which starred Kathleen Turner as a sexy seductress who convinces a small-time lawyer (William Hurt) to murder her rich husband.

He reaped his first Oscar nomination just two years later: Best Original Screenplay for the baby boomer dramedy “The Big Chill...

Kevin Kline
Kevin Kline movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘A Fish Called Wanda,’ ‘Sophie’s Choice’
Kevin Kline
Kevin Kline first rose to fame on the New York stage where he has continued to appear with 16 Broadway roles. He impressed critics and won the 1978 Tony Award for the musical “On the Twentieth Century,” which gave him a highly comedic role with pratfalls. That led to other roles on Broadway, most notably as The Pirate King in a revival of “The Pirates of Penzance,” which brought him a second Tony, this time as a lead actor. In 2017, he he would add a third Tony to his mantle for the lead character in “Present Laughter.”

Kline was 35 before he ventured into the world of film, but he did it in a highly notable way playing opposite Meryl Streep in her legendary Oscar-winning role in “Sophie’s Choice.” Streep dedicated her Oscar to Kline and Peter MacNicol since it was their eyes she looked into while giving her highly acclaimed performance.

How to Avoid a Political Showdown at the Thanksgiving Table, with Etiquette Expert Lizzie Post
Ah, Thanksgiving, a day to put our cooking skills and our aptitude for non-violent conflict resolution to the test.

Families around the country will come together this Thursday to eat, drink, give thanks and remember that time a few hundred years ago when groups of people from different backgrounds and with disparate beliefs managed to come together to eat dinner in peace.

And if they can do it, so can we.

Any family gathering holds the possibility of disagreements among members of different generations or with conflicting political views, but with political tensions running especially high post-election, a universal dread...

Damnation (2017)
‘Damnation’: A Black Female Prostitute May Be the Most Subversive Character on USA’s Crazy New Pulp Western
Damnation (2017)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Damnation’s” first two episodes, “Sam Riley’s Body” and “Whose Side Are You On?”]

As IndieWire wrote in its initial review of USA Network’s new Depression-era series, “Damnation” is anything but subtle. People die — a lot, horribly, and sometimes, even their corpses are carted around and posed a la Christ on the cross. Brothers pull guns on each other because their mutual hatred runs as deep as the Grand Canyon. Checking a man for infections at a local brothel includes pouring Listerine over his crotch. “Damnation” is a blunt, equal-opportunity offensive pulp Western, which is why the introduction of two potential romantic partners is the least romantic meet-cute ever imagined.

Loner Creeley Turner (Logan Marshall-Green), aka The Cowboy, wanders into Holden, Iowa in 1931. Sent by the Pinkerton agency to furtively take down unionization efforts by the local farmers, Creeley sets up shop in the most peculiar way: He goes to a roomful of prostitutes at the town’s brothel and holds up a...

Howie Dorough Dishes on His ‘Bachelor’-Like Romance Ahead of 10th Wedding Anniversary (Exclusive)
Howie Dorough
Leigh Boniello was a 26-year-old music enthusiast, anxiously starting a new job for the Backstreet Boys during the height of their fame, when suddenly she found herself caught up in an epic made-for-tv romance.

“Her job was to get content of us doing stuff outside of the everyday show ritual, and I was always the one who would put my hand up when they’d ask, ‘Does anyone want to go hang-gliding in Rio today?’” Howie Dorough recalls to Et. “So, she would come out and we did the pyramids and so many fun things. I always joked the website became mostly about me!”

“It was like being on The Bachelor, because it was all these crazy experiences,” adds Leigh. “It was like, ‘Here we are in Mexico, let’s get a private tour of the pyramids and go on crazy adventures together!’ It just lent itself to a romantic situation.”

Sure enough, romance...

Best Picture... Settled Contenders or Confusing Vacuum at Top?
Nathaniel R

In the absence of a Best Picture frontrunner, something I think we all can agree on at this particular juncture in time, does that mean anything could happen with Best Picture nominations? Or does that mean the Best Picture competition is fairly settled but that the films (i.e. campaigns) have yet to sort out who is the most formidable?

I'd argue, perhaps foolishly, that it's the latter. I see a fairly clear situation ahead where these seven films (and maybe only these seven) are going to be nominated. A winner will emerge but none have yet made a clear case that they're "the one".

Call Me By Your Name | Darkest Hour | Dunkirk

Get Out | Mudbound | The Shape of Water

Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Since Academy rules allow for 5-10 nominees in a given year in the top category and since we've usually seen the final size...

In the video, the comedian walks down a street proclaiming her fondness for all Americans, no matter their race, religion or political ideology. However, after praising those ranging from Koreans to Haitians and Irish to North Carolinians, Silverman realizes she's guilty of stereotyping.

1941: A Great Comedy For Slim Pickens Day
On Monday, August 28, 2017, Turner Classic Movies will devote an entire day of their “Summer Under the Stars” series to the late, great Louis Burton Lindley Jr. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, well, then just picture the fella riding the bomb like a buckin’ bronco at the end of Dr. Strangelove…, or the racist taskmaster heading up the railroad gang in Blazing Saddles, or the doomed Sheriff Baker, who gets one of the loveliest, most heartbreaking sendoffs in movie history in Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

Lindley joined the rodeo circuit when he was 13 and soon picked up the name that would follow him throughout the length of his professional career, in rodeo and in movies & TV. One of the rodeo vets got a look at the lank newcomer and told him, “Slim pickin’s. That’s all you’re gonna get in this rodeo.

Cosmic Lovecraft horror novel 'Horror in the Clouds' unleashes
MoreHorror.com

We're definitely fans of Lovecraft horror stories here at MoreHorror and the Lovecraft universe in general.

Lovecraft fans are pretty particular with film adaptations let alone adding to his beloved universe. The Cloverfield films have proven it can be done and embraced on film if executed properly.

Writer Scott Shoyer is attempting to go down that road with his new novel, Horror in The Clouds from Severed Press. It will be ultimately up to fans to decide if they are open to the idea of introducing "a new breed of Elder Gods", (is that an oxymoron?) into the Lovecraft universe. If anyone can pull it off, it would seem that Shoyer is primed for it.

Check out all the details about the book from the official press release below.

Texas ER Doctor and Mom Found Dead in Grand Canyon After Searching for Water for Children
Kevin Kline, Steve Martin, Danny Glover, Mary-Louise Parker, Mary McDonnell, and Alfre Woodard in Grand Canyon (1991)
Grand Canyon National Park officials found the body of 38-year-old Sarah Beadle on Wednesday after the Texas mother was reported missing while on a hike with two children.

Beadle was with her daughter, Laura, and her nephew, Evan, during a hike at the park on August 1. When Laura became dizzy due to the heat, Beadle left the children in a safe area and ventured out in search of water and help, explains Beadle’s husband, Scott Beadle, in a Facebook post. At some point, Beadle made “a wrong turn and got lost.” A passing hiker eventually spotted the children and returned them to camp,...

‘Dunkirk’: Here’s Every Movie Theater Showing Christopher Nolan’s New Movie on 70mm Film
Fionn Whitehead in Dunkerque (2017)
One of the most important things you need to know about Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” is that the entire 106-minute feature was shot on 65mm film, with 75% incorporating IMAX film cameras. In terms of visual scope, these stats suggest “Dunkirk” might just be Nolan’s biggest movie to date, which means you shouldn’t settle for a digital projection if you don’t have to.

“Dunkirk” will be projected in 70mm in select theaters and tickets for those engagements are now for sale on the “Dunkirk” official website, so we finally have confirmation on what theaters across the country will be showing the WWII drama in its preferred format.

Where to See Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’ in 70mm
We’re just a few weeks away from a new Christopher Nolan film, which means questions may abound about what exact format to see it in. With around 75% of his World War II thriller Dunkirk reported to be shot on IMAX 65mm film stock (aka the vertically-longer aspect ratio first utilized by Nolan for The Dark Knight, most memorably for the opening scene) and the rest on 65mm large format film stock, the best experience one can have is seeking out a 15/70mm presentation.

As tickets go on sale this morning, we now have a list of all the locations in the U.S. and Canada presenting the film in 70mm. Before we get to that list (via Nolan Fans), check out a visual format guide from Anton Volkov, as well as a new TV spot. Since 70mm formats will vary, if one is seeking out the best quality — 15/70mm...
