“Horror in the 90s sucked!” It’s a phrase we have all heard. We may have even uttered it. While the 70s was a time for grimy experimentation that set the standards for decades to come, and the 80s were the heyday of franchise slashers, the 90s represented something completely different for horror fans. The slasher giants like Halloween and Friday the 13th were petering out and no new horror icons had risen to take their places. In the last few years of the decade, the slasher re-emerged via Scream and gave rise to the more clever, self-referencial horror cycle that carried us into the new millennium, but what about the years before that? Was horror truly the barren wasteland that so often gets moaned about?

How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.
I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.
10. A Quiet Place Day One
In a year of surprising prequels, A Quiet Place: Day One is my favorite.

The A Nightmare on Elm Street movie franchise didn't delve into Freddy Krueger as deeply as some audiences would think. From the beginning, the movies have been transparent about Freddy's background as a child killer and even how he was killed. Later movies - namely Dream Warriors and Freddy's Dead - added more depth to Freddy's twisted origin story, revealing his upbringing.
However, a forgotten Marvel comic - Freddy Krueger's A Nightmare on Elm Street #1 by Steve Gerber, Rich Buckler, Tony DeZuniga, Alfredo Alcala, and Janice Chiang - delves deeper into the origin story of one Frederick Charles Krueger. The brief two-issue comic series finds a way to reveal new details about Freddy Krueger that the movies themselves never explored.
Granted, there are minor tweaks in this comic origin update that alter what audiences learn in the movies. Still, the new details are significant additions to the franchise, especially those...

It's hard to overstate just how significant Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street still is. The slasher classic has successfully infiltrated our popular subconscious, reaching a sinister gloved hand into the imaginations of generations of filmmakers and reshaping modern horror cinema. It's perhaps only with hindsight that the full extent of the 1984 movie's impact can be appreciated. But even with its iconic villain, inspired premise, and archetypal story, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is much more than an artifact to be admired. It remains a thrilling spectacle albeit with some of its originality tarnished.

The recently resurrected Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a trio of new indie horror films on Blu-ray and DVD on December 10: Crust, Cursed in Baja, and Abruptio.
Character actor Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) makes his feature directorial debut on Crust, an offbeat horror-comedy about a sock monster that he co-wrote with Jim Wald.
Whalen stars with Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).
In Crust, “Vegas Winters is a former child star who owns a laundromat. One of the benefits of running the place is finding all the leftover socks from his customers, which Vegas uses in creative ways. After Vegas becomes the victim of bullying, he seeks refuge from the attack in the pile of socks. His pain somehow creates a monster willing to seek vengeance for Vegas.”

Over the course of seven A Nightmare On Elm Street installments in ten years, supernatural slasher Freddy Krueger became an icon, loved by adults and kids alike. Creator Wes Craven was compelled to make the final film, New Nightmare, with his original cast playing themselves in a story of how Freddy Krueger had taken over popular culture. However, the same experiment had already been done in the previous film, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, in a subtler but cleverer way.
Series producer Rachel Talalay, who also had credits in John Waters movies and the satirical Tank Girl, made her directorial debut with the sixth A Nightmare On Elm Street film. Fans didn't appreciate the film's goofiness, feeling that it took Freddy's dark humor too far. However, this comic focus facilitated a clever examination of Freddy's infiltration of everything from video games to rock 'n' roll. The least popular sequel is...

Terrifier 4 is a given – but Damien Leone has a final plan for Art the Clown, as he plots an ending for the psychotic character.
It’s been a case of champagne corks among the blood and guts where the Terrifier franchise is concerned. Over the weekend, writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 soared to the top of the US box office, the $3m-budgeted picture landing $14.1m in takings. It’s the kind of franchise that Hollywood studios resist, but might be wishing they didn’t.
Still, the keys to the saga, and the character arc of Art the Clown, are in the hands of Damien Leone, and he’d already been talking up plans for Terrifier 4 ahead of the release of his new film. Now though, in a chat with Variety, he’s revealed that he has an ending in sight for Art the Clown, and likely the saga entirely.

"Who better to resurrect Freddy than his creator?" This is the question posed by producer Bob Shaye, playing himself, in 1994's "New Nightmare," typically billed as Wes Craven's "New Nightmare." That's because Craven, who had long since stepped away from directing the Freddy Krueger films, had returned to his post behind the camera. However, this wasn't just for a paycheck; Craven was about to provide the genre with its boldest reinvention arguably since he introduced us to Freddy in the original nightmare-inducing "A Nightmare on Elm Street" a decade earlier.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. After a long, hot summer, fall finally seems to be on the way. That means that network television is coming back from summer breaks, with new and returning series coming in September and October. But it also means that retail stores have started filling shelves with Halloween merchandise, and horror fans are looking for their newest scare.
While horror movies are generally considered the standard, horror television provides an opportunity to stretch out the tension and make audiences really care about the characters before they face new terrors. This doesn't always work, because the gap between episodes can mess with traditional horror pacing, but creators like Mike Flanagan have mastered the balance.
With long-running shows like Evil and What We Do In The Shadows coming to an end, new horror content is needed now more than ever. Thankfully, there is a good mixture coming to our screens, with an option for every horror fan.

Maika Monroe has been busy establishing herself as one of horror's most prominent scream queens ever since her breakthrough in 2014's It Follows. Now that the little horror movie that could, Longlegs, has opened to over $20 million, her clout has risen considerably and cemented the idea that the horror movies she stars in can be hugely successful both critically and financially. With this in mind, there's one major, long-dormant horror franchise she would love the chance to resurrect.
It Follows, The Guest, Greta, Villains, Watcher, and Longlegs are all originals, and all have achieved either critical success, financial success, or a mixture of the two. And, now, Monroe hopes to see the same happen with A Nightmare on Elm Street. And Monroe is sure that Nightmare is the one for her, because when asked by Collider what her dream franchise would be, she said:

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those franchises that, despite its roller-coaster of quality across the series- is just too damn iconic to fall out of the favor of us horror fans. Wes Craven’s imagination birthed one of the most recognizable villains in horror history And spawned a franchise that would include 8 movies and one crossover film pitting Freddy against Jason. From 1984 and all the way up until today- audiences remain invested in the potential for such a unique and powerful monster. And we still are holding out hope for a new silver screen outing soon. So, whether you’re re-watching the original film for the millionth time- or you’re slogging your way through the 2010 remake for… some reason- the fact remains that Freddy and his status as a slasher icon will never truly die. Unless… Chapter six in the Freddy saga- Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare...

Thelma & Louise, a landmark feminist film, balances progressive elements with lively adventure. Geena Davis believes the movie should never be remade due to its cultural impact and unique place in cinematic history. The film's portrayal of female empowerment and defiance of traditional gender roles inspired cinema as a whole.
Geena Davis explains why Thelma & Louise should not ever get a remake. Directed by Ridley Scott with a script written by Callie Khouri, the 1991 crime drama follows the two titular friends, a homemaker and a waitress, who embark on a road trip that takes an unexpected turn when they commit a crime and are pursued by police. Besides Davis, the cast includes Oscar winner Susan Sarandon, Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel, Kill Bill: Volume 2's Michael Madsen, Happy Gilmore's Christopher McDonald, Groundhog Day's Stephen Tobolowsky, and two-time Oscar winner Brad Pitt in one of his first major roles.

There are many things in this weird and wonderful world that go together perfectly; mac and cheese, bacon and eggs, beer and curry, Pegg and Frost, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Affleck and Lopez. Ok, there are some things that go well together. However, there are two popular worlds that are a huge part of this particular writer’s life, that get on together like a house on fire; rock music and horror movies. Both genres embody everything that’s good about their respective industries and over time there have been many collaborations between the two worlds. Various rockers have lent either their musical, or acting, talents to the movie world and horror in particular, including the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Henry Rollins and David Bowie. What we’re going to focus on primarily is a collaboration between one of the most prominent British rock stars of all time, Lemmy Kilmister,...

For many fans of Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, the sixth movie Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare sits near the bottom of their ranking. It is criticized for pushing Freddy's goofiness too far and losing what made him so scary in the 1984 original. Also, being the sixth movie in less than 10 years, there was a feeling of fatigue surrounding the franchise. However, despite its flaws, Freddy's Dead still manages to capture how terrifying Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) can be through one of its death sequences. Carlos' (Ricky Dean Logan) death strips back the humor and exaggeration the franchise had become accustomed to and focuses on the fear of sensory loss. This scene marks a shift in focus, moving away from Freddy's theatrical persona and instead concentrating on the one thing Carlos relies on his hearing aid. The tone of the sequence feels much more sinister than anything else in the franchise,...

When you hear the label “Music Maniacs,” a few names probably come to mind. And we’re willing to bet that one of them is Alice Cooper, who is indeed joining McFarlane’s toy line.

Freddy Krueger became an iconic horror villain through his unique ability to kill victims in their dreams, leaving no physical evidence behind. The origin story of Freddy Krueger reveals a dark history of abuse and murder, solidifying his status as a terrifying figure in pop culture. Freddy's weakness, like Pennywise's, lies in his fear of fire and reliance on the fear of his victims to fuel his reign of terror in the dream world.
When fictional murderer Freddy Krueger was introduced in the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film in 1984, no one could have predicted that he would emerge as one of the most iconic screen villains in history, especially Robert Englund, a veteran character actor who ended up playing Freddy in seven additional films and a short-lived television series over the course of approximately 20 years.

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Earlier this month, we shared the news that Anchor Bay Entertainment – which used to be a major player in the horror world back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when they gave DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more – is being revived, with their first two releases puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Now we’ve learned that the new Anchor Bay has acquired the North American rights to the horror/comedy Crust, with the plan being to release it sometime later this year.

Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. I don’t want to say anything about it yet, but she’s so smart I’m like, ‘Let’s write a movie together, and we’ll produce it together, and I’ll direct it, and you’ll star in it.’” Of course, Roth didn’t give away any details about the story he and Greenblatt are collaborating on. Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Alex Divincenzo revisits the great slasher slump of 1989.
While horror fans often look back on the ’80s with a nostalgic glow, 1989 was not what most would consider a strong year for the genre — particularly when compared to the embarrassment of riches spawned by the rest of the decade. Not even Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were safe from the slasher slump.
Each franchise had its ups and downs across a cumulative 17 movies in the ’80s, but the decade came to a close with low points — creatively and financially — in all three sagas: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

Adult-child duos in horror movies offer different perspectives on bonds and relationships. These duos often join forces, face supernatural threats, and sometimes don't get happy endings. Key examples include Heather & Dylan in New Nightmare, Gemma & Cady in M3GAN, and Ripley & Newt in Aliens.
Adult and child duos don’t often happen in horror movies, but when they do, they offer different perspectives on the bonds that can be created between them. Adult-child duos are often found in children’s movies, but these have also appeared in the horror genre and have made way for some of the most exciting and at times tragic stories in this genre. The chemistry between the child actors and the adult ones was key to the bond of their characters and making their dynamic and relationship believable, complementing each other’s performances while also adding to the horror and suspense of their movies.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw is widely regarded as one of the worst horror films ever made, but Chris Rock is still down to make a sequel. The decision to shift the focus away from the franchise's legacy villain was a major reason for Spiral's failure. Despite its poor reception among critics, some fans enjoyed the ninth installment in the Saw franchise, even though it became the lowest-grossing entry at the domestic box office.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw unequivocally remains one of the worst horror films of all time. Sure, movies like Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers will always be there to argue that fact, but Spiral is the one Saw entry that unquestionably jumps the shark. Regardless, Chris Rock wants to do a sequel, according to producer Mark Burg.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Actor Peter Spellos had over 150 screen acting and vocal performance credits to his name, but genre fans are most likely to remember him as Orville Ketchum from the slasher movie Sorority House Massacre II and its companion piece Hard to Die, as well as the brief appearance he made as the character Tracy’s father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Outside of horror, he’s best known for providing the voice of Sky-Byte in 39 episodes of the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Unfortunately, we have very sad news to share today, as it has been confirmed that Spellos has passed away at age 69 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on March 1, 1954, Spellos passed away yesterday, November 19th, at the Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis. His brother, James Spellos, notified TMZ that his family is planning an online “celebration of life” gathering for his fans.

The 1994 horror movie "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" was the seventh film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, and featured one of the cleverest conceits for a horror sequel. The vicious supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger — able to kill his victims from inside their dreams — somehow escaped the surly bounds of fiction and began stalking the actors and filmmakers who made the original "The Nightmare on Elm Street" a decade prior. Heather Langenkamp appears as herself, as does Robert Englund, John Saxon, Craven, and New Line Cinema bigwig Robert Shaye. Langenkamp did have a young child in 1994 — her late son Daniel Atticus Anderson was born in 1991 — but in the movie, Langenkamp's child was named Jacob and played by actor Miko Hughes.

What’s the best slasher franchise of all time? That question is certain to start an argument among horror fans. But with all due respect to “Scream,” Wes Craven’s original horror franchise “A Nightmare on Elm Street” has quite possibly the most legitimate claim to the title.
Sure, not every film about wacky child murderer Freddy Krueger (the delightfully menacing Robert Englund) and his mission to kill the teenagers of Springwood in their sleep is an A+ effort. Like many a slasher franchise, the series eventually succumbed to its own ridiculousness as sequel after sequel was steadily pumped out and quality diminished. But the series also has more hits to its credit than most of the other classic slashers. The original “Halloween” is arguably the best slasher of all time, but it’s also the only genuinely great film in the franchise (though there are dozens of “Halloween H20” defenders!

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare is the official fifth sequel in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, one meant to send the dream reaper off in grand fashion. It didn't. Instead, it followed the pattern of progressively worse sequels and did nothing to bring Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) back to the horrific, fear-inducing monster of the first film. It should have been better. And it very nearly was.

Freddy vs. Jason showcased beautiful imagery, and Jennifer's TV nightmare is both silly and unsettling. Tina's nightmare is the scariest in the franchise.

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Musicians often make appearances in movies, including horror films, showcasing their acting skills and adding to their artistic accomplishments. Some musicians have had minor roles in horror movies but have left a lasting impact with their big personalities, while others have been given lead roles as heroes or antagonists. From Cherie Currie in Twilight Zone: The Movie to David Bowie in The Hunger, musicians like Aaliyah, Busta Rhymes, and Meat Loaf have made memorable appearances in horror movies, displaying their versatility as artists.
It’s not uncommon for musicians to make the jump to acting, either for a while or as a full career change, and it’s more fascinating when they appear in horror movies. Musicians often make appearances in movies and TV shows as themselves, as did Prince in New Girl and Alice Cooper in Dark Shadows, and many others have made the decision to add acting to their artistic accomplishments.

Saturday evening at last weekend’s Terror Con in Marlborough, Ma, was capped off by a highlight of the event: a panel with Robert Englund. No one can work a room quite like the loquacious horror icon, and he regaled the standing-room-only crowd with 45 minutes of tales from his storied career.
Although it was advertised as Englund interviewing the audience — which could have been an entertaining way to avoid any potential issues with the SAG-AFTRA strike — the crowd was perfectly happy to learn that it would be a standard question-and-answer session instead. Englund began by explaining that the strike prohibits promotion of his work and any discussions about upcoming projects before quipping, “And if anybody asks how long the Freddy makeup takes, I’ll castrate you.” The audience erupted in laughter and cheers.

Alice Cooper jokingly pitched the idea of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard doing a remake of "The War of the Roses." Depp and Cooper are friends and bandmates in the Hollywood Vampires, where Depp plays guitar. Cooper dispelled the myth that he once killed a chicken on stage, explaining it was a misunderstanding that led to his reputation as a rock villain.

Rachel Talalay praises the new sonic screwdriver design and how it fits in with the aesthetic of previous eras, while also complimenting David Tennant's stylish handling of the device. Freddy Krueger has a choice to make. On one side is Lori (Monica Keena), the woman he had been antagonizing throughout the movie Freddy vs. Jason, along with her wounded boyfriend Will (Jason Ritter). On the other is Kia (Kelly Rowland), Lori’s grouchy friend.

Ronnie Yu's 2003 film "Freddy vs. Jason" -- simultaneously the eighth film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series and the eleventh film in the "Friday the 13th" series -- finally brought together two of the most popular characters of the 1980s slasher boom and had them wail on each other in a series of supernatural monster fights. Most slasher fans would have appreciated a "Freddy vs. Jason" film about a decade earlier, but there was still magic in the air in 2003; Yu's film made over $116 million on a $30 million budget.
It also, in a very utilitarian way, gave audiences exactly what they wanted. There was a decent-enough retinue of teenage victims to slaughter (led by actress Monica Keena). The story hung together juuuust well enough. And the final fights between Freddy (Robert Englund) and Jason (Ken Kirzinger) addressed any late-night, heavily intoxicated concerns horror fanboys might have posited.

In 1984, Jason Voorhees (Ted White) finally met his end in Joseph Zito's "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter." He was finally dead. In 1991, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) finally met his end in Rachel Talalay's "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare." He was finally dead. In 1993, Jason Voorhees met his end again in Adam Marcus' "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday." He was finally dead again. In 1994, Freddy Krueger finally met his end again in "Wes Craven's New Nightmare." He was finally dead again.
The two monsters were once again somehow alive to face off in Ronny Yu's excitable 2003 battle royale "Freddy vs. Jason," a film that felt like it came too late to bank on the popularity of the characters, but that was a massive hit nonetheless. Longtime fans of 1980s slasher movies were eager to see two of the most popular monsters of its heyday (played...

On July 25th, 1990, as Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold flew high above Jack Murphy Stadium, the San Diego Padres waited to face the Cincinnati Reds in the last of a four-game homestand. But before they would take the field, they would be graced with the presence of one of TV’s biggest stars performing the American National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” As the helicopter neared, Arnold looked over the crowd of more than 25,000 and tried to convince his wife that maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Soon before the first pitch, Roseanne belted her take on Francis Scott Key’s anthem, spit on the field and grabbed her crotch. It would be her most controversial moment…until decades later…
Let’s find out: Wtf Happened to…Roseanne Barr?
But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Roseanne Barr, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning...
