A Disturbing Horror Movie With Matthew McConaughey Marked Bill Paxton's Directorial Debut
Image
Fans of actor Bill Paxton — and we are legion — likely know that he made his directorial debut in 1980, helming the music video for Barnes & Barnes' immortal classic "Fish Heads." The video, made on a very, very low budget, featured Paxton as a buyer and enthusiast of the titular ichthyoid crania, shown throwing them a birthday party and generally enjoying their company. The video also featured a cameo from Dr. Demento, the famed Los Angeles DJ responsible for proliferating hundreds of well-known novelty hits, and for bringing "Weird Al" Yankovic to the world's attention. Paxton was a weird, wonderful man who ran on the fringes. The fact that he became a well-known mainstream star is kind of wild.

Paxton, of course, began appearing in feature films in the late 1970s and early 1980s, starring in notable genre films like "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker" and "Mortuary." Many likely first noticed him in...

Laugh Factory Expands Into Feature Film Production With Adam Rifkin’s “Toad”
Image
Exclusive: The Laugh Factory is venturing into feature film production with the launch of Laugh Factory Entertainment; their first project being Adam Rifkin’s stoner comedy, Toad, which Deadline first told you about.

The new division will be led by new Laugh Factory President David Fuhrer, Head of Entertainment John Weiser and Laugh Factory founder Jamie Masada who are expanding the iconic brand beyond the comedy clubs into film, television, podcasts, digital content, and live events.

James Paxton

Directed by Rifkin and co-written by the filmmaker with Piers Ashworth, Toad, follows the wild story of two naive slackers, Sam (James Paxton of Twisters) and Alex (Oliver Wyman of Feeling Randy), who are hired by a crime boss to transport a box of contraband psychedelic toads from LA to Vegas. When the desert heat causes the toads to suffer heatstroke, the two are inadvertently dosed when they give the toads CPR...

Adam Rifkin Hops On Stoner Comedy ‘Toad’ With James Paxton
Image
Exclusive: Filmmaker Adam Rifkin is set to direct his next feature, the stoner comedy, Toad, which he co-wrote with Bank of Dave scribe Piers Ashworth. Cameras will roll this autumn in New Mexico.

James Paxton

In the spirit of such pics like Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Toad tells the tale of two naive slackers, Sam (played by James Paxton of Twisters and Rifkin’s western Last Train to Fortune) and Alex (Oliver Wyman of Feeling Randy), who are hired by a frightening cartel boss to deliver a cardboard box from LA to Vegas for the tidy sum of $10k. The boys think it’s their lucky day. Instructed not to look in the box, the duo can’t contain their curiosity and as soon as they drive off the property they pull over and have a peek.

Malcolm McDowell, Mary Steenburgen, Bernadette Peters & James Paxton Board Adam Rifkin’s ‘Last Train To Fortune’
Image
Exclusive: Malcolm McDowell is saddling up with James Paxton, Bernadette Peters and Laura Marano for Adam Rifkin’s Western Last Train to Fortune.

Last Train to Fortune also reteams McDowell with his former wife, Oscar winner Mary Steenburgen, the duo previously starring together in the 1979 sci-fi drama Time After Time and the 1983 Martin Ritt drama Cross Creek.

In the pic, McDowell plays Cecil Peachtree, a stuffed-shirt schoolmaster who misses the last train to Fortune and meets an outlaw named Dooley (Paxton), at which point they strike a deal: The gunslinger will ride the book-loving Cecil to Fortune in exchange for his teacher’s stipend awaiting him. Along the way there are gunfights, jailbreaks and saloon gals, and our mismatched heroes form an unlikely bond. The pic, which is produced by Michael P.J. Gerstein, Paxton, Matt Williams, Rifkin and Brad Wyman (the Oscar-winning Charlize Theron drama Monster) is said to be...

Nicolas Cage Did Whatever He Wanted With His Never On Tuesday Character
Image
Nicolas Cage is famous for being weird. There are endless video compilations of the bizarre acting choices he has made throughout his extremely prolific career, but an obscure direct-to-video movie from decades ago may hold his strangest appearance ever. Cage is only in a minute-long cameo in the 1989 teen sex comedy "Never on Tuesday," but his prosthetic nose and falsetto voice make it quite the memorable one. That's because for the glorious short time he was on camera, Cage was given free rein to do whatever he pleased.

"Never on Tuesday" marks the directorial debut of Adam Rifkin, who started off in public access television and went on to have an expansive career in making mostly low-budget independent films like the infamous black comedy "The Dark Backward" and the Burt Reynolds swan song "The Last Movie Star." The film follows the pursuits of two dudes trying to win the romance...

F. Gary Gray in Le prix à payer (1996)
‘Men in Black International’ Film Review: Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson Outcharm a By-the-Numbers Script
F. Gary Gray in Le prix à payer (1996)
Here come the Men in Black, but not the ones that you remember. F. Gary Gray’s “Men in Black: International,” a sequel/spin-off to the blockbuster franchise about human bureaucrats managing interstellar immigration services on Earth, has a whole new cast, a whole new style — and no new ideas.

Barry Sonnenfeld’s original 1997 adaptation of the Malibu Comics series “Men in Black” was one of the most unexpected blockbusters of the 1990s. Half the movie was straightforward exposition, but it was funny exposition so nobody cared. Eccentric and clever, and steadfastly refusing to indulge in an action sequence whenever a quirky conversation would do, the film was a rare beacon of wit in a wasteland of otherwise brainless spectacles.

But after two sequels, the “Men in Black” franchise never quite evolved. What started out as a pointed metaphor for America as a melting pot of disparate cultures became a...

Insidious : La Dernière Clé (2018)
10 Best Horror Movies of 2018 You've Already Missed
Insidious : La Dernière Clé (2018)
We're barely past the midpoint and it's already been a great year for horror movies. A Quiet Place pleased critics and genre aficionados in droves, Hereditary left audiences shocked and gasping, Upgrade delivered unprecedented ultraviolence, and Annihilation found an unlikely yet enthralling intersect between fantasy and body horror. We've also seen solid sequels in Insidious: The Last Key, The First Purge, and Hellraiser: Judgment. And the best may be yet to come, with The Nun, The Predator, and Halloween all coming down the pike when it comes to 2018 horror Movies.

Sure, there have been some disappointments as well but there've also been some incredible genre offerings that have fallen through the cracks. If you're one of those cinephiles who complains there's nothing new or original horror movies being produced these days, you simply aren't looking hard enough.

But hey, that's what I'm here for: To separate the wheat from the...

‘Psycho Cop Returns’ Review (Vinegar Syndrome)
Stars: Robert R. Shafer, Barbara Niven, Miles Dougal, Rod Sweitzer, Nick Vallelonga, Melanie Good, Julie Strain | Written by Dan Povenmire | Directed by Adam Rifkin (as Rif Coogan)

You know, it wasn’t until the release of Detroit Rock City that I realised that a) Adam Rifkin and Rif Coogan are one in the same; and b) just how many of Rifkin’s films I considered amongst my favourites at that time: Never on Tuesday, The Dark Backward, The Chase and, of course, Psycho Cop Returns. Mainly because they were films I remember renting on video (you couldn’t escape trailers for The Dark Backward back in the VHS era) and seeing on Sky’s movie channels in the days when you could be guaranteed to find an “obscure” film screening as filler between their big-name flicks!

Psycho Cop Returns came at a period in horror movie making, which also included...

Rob Lowe Shares Touching Memories of His 'Closest Friend' Bill Paxton: 'There Will Be No Replacement'
Bill Posley
In the wake of Bill Paxton's death, longtime friend Rob Lowe is joining the chorus of Hollywood stars paying tribute to the actor's life and memory.

Lowe opened up to The Hollywood Reporter in an essay published on Tuesday, in which he recalled the lasting impact Paxton made on his life.

The actor recounted how he first met Paxton in the early '90s on the set of The Dark Backward, and was impressed with the larger-than-life acting choices Paxton made during filming. A few years later, the stars became close friends while playing brothers in the 1995 Western Frank & Jesse.

Rob Lowe Remembers Bill Paxton: "My Closest Friend in the Industry"
À plein tube! (1991)
The first time I met Bill I did a guest appearance in a very odd little movie that Bill did called The Dark Backward [released in 1991]. I came in to do one scene for fun because my friends were making it and in the scene Bill took such a big swing as an actor, he went for such a broad, gigantic choice in the take, I'll never forget it. It blew my mind. Wow. "This guy has got huge balls," I thought. And we were friends ever since. Five or six years later, I'm producing the movie Frank and Jesse...

Junk TV Round-Up – Race To The Scene, The Equalizer, Vegas, React
Hey there, all you TV casualties with paint smears on everything you own. Until they put Prince Namor on the tube, here’s another junk TV round-up for you.

Dolph Lundgren, my girlfriend’s favorite actor (yes, clearly, she’s a bit of a weirdo), has got a new reality show in the works. I dunno about you, but put “Dolph Lundgren” and “unscripted series” together, and I smell a hit. That, or I need to take my garbage out. Ol’ Dolph is working with ReelzChannel for their first “non-scripted competition series” (y’know, like Hollywood Squares) entitled Race to the Scene. From that title, it sounds like a game-show for EMTs in training, but actually it’s a show wherein contestants run around to different actual movie locations and then compete in “challenges and stunts inspired by memorable movies.” Wow, does that sound thrilling. No word yet as to...

Blu-ray Review: Despite Interesting Intentions, ‘Chillerama’ Misses Target
Chicago – I was So with “Chillerama” when it started. The concept is right in my wheelhouse as I’ve long been a fan of B-movies, having been raised on the works of Roger Corman, Troma, and the writing of Joe Bob Briggs. If “Chillerama” can’t appease me, it’s unlikely to work for anyone. Bad news. Despite its best intentions and clever foundation, the execution here is just off, resulting in a hit-and-miss film that does way too much of the latter half of that equation.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

Much like “Grindhouse” was an ode to an era of bygone cinema, “Chillerama” attempts to recreate that anything-goes mentality that resulted in some truly over-the-top cult classics by using more than one style and more than one filmmaker to make an anthology of B-movie lunacy. The movie opens with a guy digging up the corpse of his wife and preparing to...

'Chillerama' Interview - 'Wadzilla' Director Adam Rifkin
Adam Rifkin at an event for X-Men 2 (2003)
With Chillerama, the epic new horror anthology film from directors Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Adam Rifkin and Tim Sullivan hitting DVD & Blu-Ray on November 29th, FearNet thought that now was as good a time as any to track down all four filmmakers and talk to them individually about their respective segments in what is being described as a loving homage to drive-in B movie madness! Going in chronological order, Adam Rifkin's 'Wadzilla' kicks off the feature. Having tackled everything from indie films (The Dark Backward) to action (The Chase) to comedy (Detroit Rock City), 'Wadzilla' marks Rifkin's first creature feature and full-on horror movie. Utilizing the style of the atomic age giant monster movies...

New Release: Chillerama DVD and Blu-ray
Release Date: Nov. 29, 2011

Price: DVD $27.97, Blu-ray $29.97

Studio: Image Entertainment

The 2011 horror anthology film Chillerama features four short movies by genre filmmakers Adam Rifkin (The Dark Backward), Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs), Adam Green (Frozen) and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2).

In the spirit of such classic “omnibus” films as Dead of Night, Tales From the Crypt and Creepshow, Chillerama offers four vignettes that celebrate the golden age of B horror schlock.

Chillerama’s wraparound story involves the closing night of the last drive-in theater in America. The theater’s owner (Richard Riehle, Bridesmaids) “celebrates” the closing by scheduling the ultimate marathon of lost horror films — four of them — to be shown publicly for the first time. The quartet includes “The Diary of Anne Frankenstein” directed by Green, “Wadzilla,” directed by Rifkin, “I Was a Teenage Werebear” helmed by Sullivan and “Zom-b-Movie” by Lynch.

Image heats up with Chillerama
Image Entertainment, Inc. has acquired all distribution rights to the horror anthology film Chillerama, featuring out gay director Tim Sullivan and Judas Kiss star Sean Paul Lockhart (aka Brent Corrigan.) Billed as “the ultimate midnight movie”, plans call for a theatrical and potential “road show” release in early fall, with VOD and DVD targeted for latter Q4. The announcement was made by Image Entertainment’s Chief Acquisition Officer, Bill Bromiley.

“This title is a nightmare come true for anyone who loves horror films, twisted humor, and skilled film making,” said Bromiley. “Chillerama, and its foursome of fierce film makers, presents a bloody-good cinematic love letter to fans.”

“The four directors of Chillerama are as much fans of horror film as they are filmmakers,” said Mark Ward, Vice President of Acquisitions, Image Entertainment. “I’m thrilled that Image is partnered with them to bring this very special film to audiences everywhere.

Image Entertainment acquires rights to "Chillerama"
Chillerama Earlier in the year I caught Tim Sullivan's segment for Chillerama entitled "I Was a Teenage Werebear" starring Brent Corrigan, Anton Troy, Gabrielle West and Lin Shaye. It was a spot on entry that captured the beach movie mentality to the tee, but with a gay horror twist. I Was a Teenage Werebear was one of the most entertaining things I had seen come out of the horror entertainment field this year to date. If the other segments from Chillerama are halfway as entertaining as this one, then Chillerama is one of the most anticipated horror films of the year for me. So on that note, I am glad to hear that Image Entertainment is going to be bringing the horror to genre fans this fall.

Late Night Classics – The Invisible Maniac (Nsfw)
There are so many dignified things that I could do with the power of invisibility. Peace treaties could be forged and nuclear weapons could be dismantled, but where is the fun in that? The inner Benny Hill in me would rather look up girls skirts and hang out in a women’s locker room all day than try to be a philanthropist. The ladies might not want to hear that, but in some ways I am still a knuckledragger and I would not be able to resist that temptation.

There is a film that is like one of my wet dreams come true. A masturbatory classic of John Holmes-sized proportions that would make Mr. Skin blush. The movie I am speaking of is Adam Rifkin’s The Invisible Maniac, which is a loving throwback to H.G. Wells with a side order of libidinous imagery that will have you singing...

Opinion In A Haystack: Adam Rifkin
Questioning Greatness with Adam Rifkin:

Earth’S Premiere Storyteller

We (Bob Rose, me, I?) at the Opinion In A Haystack Department are proud to announce that I (we?) were (was?) given the chance to pick the brain bucket of Hollywood’s supreme philosopher and film-creationist, Sir Adam Rifkin (facebook, twitter, myspace.) He’s the filmmaker responsible for Detroit Rock City, The Chase, The Dark Backward, and, more recently, the award winning Look. I was able to sit down with Mr. Rifkin, in front of our respective computers, and interview him, via email, about a plethora of assorted, varied, diverse, sundry, indiscriminate, and heavily kaleidoscopic ideas.

I originally sent Mr. Rifkin over 3,000 questions, most of which involved very uncomfortable queries about his family lineage, sexual fears, and Laserdisc-replica collection. He answered all of them in full detail, thus passing the interview-qualification-process, which allowed me to send him the 16 questions you will find below.

The world's only Bill Paxton pinball machine
I spend a lot of time every day connected to the internet and I see many things. Very few of them come as close to being as incredibly geeky and super-cool as what Benjamin J. Heckendorn is making in his off-time: the world's only and fully working pinball machine meant to honor the film career of Bill Paxton. Twister. Aliens. True Lies. Frailty. The Dark Backward. Weird Science. The Terminator. The man is worthy -- nay, Owed -- a pinball machine to his geek greatness.

Heckendorn has been working on his custom pinball machine since 2005; he is considered an expert game modder and so has a bunch of other projects on the go at any given time but now Heckendorn hopes to have his Bpp game ready for playing next year. Based on the photos and videos he's showing us, the dream will be realized on time.

Heckendorn's pinball machine...
