Which was Leonardo DiCaprio’s first big screen movie?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
In 1991, a fresh-faced Leonardo DiCaprio made his feature film debut in Critters 3, a direct-to-video sequel that took “cheesy” to a whole new level. The film followed flesh-eating alien furballs terrorizing an apartment complex, hardly the kind of cinematic milestone most actors dream about.
DiCaprio played Josh, the stepson of a corrupt landlord, caught in the middle of the chaos. But let’s be real: Critters 3 had one true claim to fame. As one critic bluntly put it, “Its claim to fame is that it marked Leonardo DiCaprio’s film debut, but aside from that Trivial Pursuit tidbit, there’s not much to recommend this subpar entry.”
The Critters franchise had some success early on, despite being a clear Gremlins knockoff. The first two films gained a cult following and even managed decent Rotten Tomatoes audience scores.

The 1986 sci-fi horror comedy Critters introduced us to voracious alien creatures known as the Krites – and since genre fans were left hungry for more, we got Critters 2: The Main Course in 1988, Critters 3 in 1991, and Critters 4 in 1992. Sadly, the franchise went dormant for many years after the release of the fourth film… but it was finally revived with the 2019 web series Critters: A New Binge (which was basically a 70 minute movie that was chopped into eight episodes) and the 2019 film Critters Attack! Now, Harker Press has published a book called We’re Here for the Krites: The Making of Critters, where author Matthew C. DuPée’s dives into the franchise for 339 pages! Copies are available for purchase at This Link.
Here’s the information on the book: Krites, Critters, La Criaturas. Whatever you call them, You Are What They Eat! Harker Press invites you to return to Grover...

It’s always interesting to see big time directors go against type and into a genre we don’t necessarily associate them with. We have Mount Rushmore type horror directors like John Carpenter and Wes Craven giving us thoughtful entries into their catalogues like Starman and Music of the Heart. On the flip side of that, what happens when a director known for Oscar worthy drama, gangster, and period piece movies goes all in on a scary movie? How did that movie miss out on any major awards nominations even with it being considered prestige horror? How many different adaptations of Denis Lehane’s novel would we get? Take the boat over before the storm hits as we find out what happened to Shutter Island.
Denis Lehane is an American author who began writing in the early 1990s. While he had success with a series of novels with repeating characters early,...

Paul Rudd made his big-screen debut in Amy Hecklering's high-profile modernization of Jane Austen's "Emma," "Clueless" in 1995. He immediately gained a great deal of attention because he was very handsome, and he was very funny. Fun trivia: Rudd was 25 when he filmed "Clueless" in 1995 and, in 2024, he somehow only looks 31. Before "Clueless," Rudd appeared in a Super Nintendo commercial, and he had a recurring role in later seasons of the soap opera "Sisters." He also starred in all six episodes of the short-lived 1994 Fox sitcom "Wild Oats." These days, Rudd is a massive movie star, having established himself as one of the better comedic actors of his generation, and becoming involved with the gigantic Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Ant-Man.
But he wasn't always playing with power. Many actors make their way into the mainstream through the portal of horror, starting their careers in slasher movies and ghost stories. Adam Scott,...

Science fiction is a genre that thrives on mankind's ability to imagine the future. Sci-fi films take us to galaxies far, far away, or they guide us down the rabbit hole into a computer program. We can visit forbidden planets or envision technologies that transform our own world, exploring space, or learning all too late that in space, no one can hear us scream. Ray Bradbury, author of "The Martian Chronicles," put it this way: "Science fiction is the most important literature in the history of the world, because it's the history of ideas, the history of our civilization birthing itself."
By revisiting the films on this list, however, we can imagine a different sort of future: someone's future acting career. The sci-fi genre has provided a jumping-off point for countless stars who went on to make their mark elsewhere, including future Oscar winners, future comedians, future talk show hosts,...

Gremlins may have stopped at only 2 movies and a recent animated TV show, but a lot of its imitators went on to make a killing in the sequel market. Sure, we had one offs like Munchies from Roger Corman and Goobers from the mind of Charles Band which should have rightfully stayed one and done but others wanted in on that franchise action. The Gate would have 2 entries as would Hobgoblins. Troll would get a few sequels, kinda, if you want to go down the rabbit hole of strange Italian sequels in name only that are just called that to capitalize on the profits of other movies and Ghoulies would somehow, miraculously, get 4 films although if I’m being honest, I actually enjoy watching that series. Critters also had 4 (initially) but has a much stronger legacy in terms of enjoyment and interesting background including the fact that even though it came out after Gremlins,...

“Alien: Romulus,” out now in theaters, is a surprise late-summer hit and proof positive that the “Alien” franchise is far from over.
And the new movie, plus the upcoming FX series “Alien: Earth,” have us wanting to look back at the series – the highs, the lows and the what-were-they-thinkings. Below is the definitive ranking of every “Alien” movie.
Chest-bursters and face-huggers are, of course, welcome.
20th Century 9. “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007)
The poster for “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” is stylized as “Avp R,” which emphasizes the fact that the movie was actually rated R, unlike the earlier PG-13-rated “Alien vs. Predator.” And, in that sense, the movie delivers the goods – there’s a ton of splatter in this installment.
A direct sequel to the earlier extraterrestrial team-up movie, “Avp R” is set in a small Colorado town, where a predator/alien hybrid from the end of the previous movie is on a bloodthirsty rampage.

In the film industry, Denzel Washington and Leonardo DiCaprio are icons who have built their careers through very striking roles and performances. They are admired not only for their successful films, but also for their real dedication. Each one follows a different path and both have never been associated with sequels or franchises.

The Krites -- the titular "Critters" from the eponymous film series -- are small, furry, extraterrestrial eating machines that are essentially dry-land piranhas. Krites only have impulses toward consumption and chaos. They have human intelligence, but are far more interested in eating than philosophy. The first "Critters" movie, directed by Stephen Herek (of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and "Mr. Holland's Opus" fame) is one of the world's only Easter-themed horror movies, centering on a small Iowa town that discovers Krite eggs and paints them for the Sunday festivities. Naturally, the eggs hatch and the hungry Krites begin wreaking mayhem. Only a pair of alien bounty hunters named Ug (Terrence Mann) and Lee can help in stopping the alien threat.
The Krites can roll up into balls like hedgehogs and trundle quickly from place to place. They can also fire poisonous quills from their backs. They're mean little mothers.

Leonardo DiCaprio started his movie career in 1991 with "Critters 3," his only movie sequel with a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. DiCaprio's avoidance of sequels is due to his focus on unique and individual film projects throughout his successful career. Despite not ruling out sequels, DiCaprio believes that any potential sequels must match the quality of masterpieces like "The Godfather."
Leonardo DiCaprio's first movie role was 33 years ago, and it is incredibly different from every other film he's made since then. It was this stature that made him one of the most sought-after actors in the business, bringing collaborations with Danny Boyle and Steven Spielberg and a long-running partnership with Martin Scorsese shortly thereafter. This fame only gave Leonardo DiCaprio more freedom to be selective about what movies he does.

Deemed one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, Denzel Washington exudes a classic movie star aura. Renowned for his enduring charm and the seamless blend of irony and sincerity in his iconic roles, Washington embodies the timeless essence of a Hollywood legend. He is also known for avoiding the franchise films, with the notable exception of The Equalizer trilogy.

He has also been commended for the same by being named the second-highest-grossing actor to not star in a franchise, following the Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Washington did not seem to mind the ranking, as he responded with a touch of wit.

In a conversation with ScreenRant, Denzel Washington expressed his disinterest in sequels and potential franchise films, as he highlighted his approach of focusing on each film individually rather than considering potential sequels.

Many actors have started their careers in horror films. In the '80s and '90s, it was almost a rite of passage. If you wanted to be famous, you had to show up in a bad horror movie first. Before Friends, Jennifer Aniston was the lead in Leprechaun. Kevin Bacon got taken out by Mrs. Voorhees in Friday the 13th. Johnny Depp met a very messy end at the razor-bladed hands of Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Even Leonardo DiCaprio did horror. At the age of 16, in his first movie ever, he was running from murderous creatures in Critters 3.

Leonardo DiCaprio's early movies, such as "Critters 3" and "Poison Ivy," may not have been well-received by critics and audiences. Despite the lackluster reviews, DiCaprio's performances in films like "Total Eclipse" and "Marvin's Room" showcased his talent and ability to immerse himself in his characters. DiCaprio's breakout roles in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and "Titanic" solidified his status as an A-list actor and catapulted him to stardom.
As one of the most popular and acclaimed actors working today, taking a look at Leonardo DiCaprio's first movies show the talent he had even as a young actor while also highlighting how far he has come. DiCaprio's recent role in Killers of the Flower Moon was the latest in a long string of highly acclaimed movies. He has starred in the highest-grossing movie of all time, worked with some of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and won an Oscar along with five other nominations.

DiCaprio's first-ever movie, "Critters 3," received a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 3.4/10. Critics panned the low-budget horror film, but it served as DiCaprio's film debut. Many actors find early success in the horror genre. Jennifer Aniston battled an evil, pun-loving Irish creature in "Leprechaun" years before she landed "Friends," for example. Charlize Theron's first role came in "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest." Even "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" boasted not one, but two future Oscar winners in its cast, Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger.
That said, not everyone manages to go on to achieve that same level of success. For every Michelle Williams ("Halloween H20: 20 Years Later") and Leonardo DiCaprio ("Critters 3"), there are countless horror stars whose careers don't reach the same level of renown. It can be especially interesting to look back at teen horror films, which often feature ensemble casts, to see who made it and who didn't. Director Kenny Ortega had the chance to meet with Leonardo DiCaprio for a role in Hocus Pocus but couldn't cast him due to his commitment to other films. DiCaprio impressed Ortega during their meeting, with Ortega describing him as "extraordinary and unique." Ortega ultimately cast Omri Katz, feeling that Katz delivered everything he had hoped for in the role.
The director of Hocus Pocus reflects on meeting with Leonardo DiCaprio for a role he knew he couldn't take. When did the Texas Chainsaw movies get so muddled with so many timelines? It’s not a hard thing to do. People get lost in Texas and end up victims of Leatherface and his family. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a story line or a variation on things from time to time, hell, that’s what made Freddy, Michael, and Jason so popular. You could have even done something like the legacy sequel for Halloween, at least the first one. Oh wait, you did, and it didn’t turn out well with characters that made terrible decisions and weren’t likeable in the first place? Oh yeah, I remember that one.

Over the course of forty-three years, thirty feature films, and over two-hundred-and-fifty awards nominations, Leonardo DiCaprio has established himself as one of the greatest actors – if not the greatest actor – of his generation. Among audiences and critics, there is virtually zero discourse when it comes to his talent as a performer.
Having collaborated with Martin Scorsese, Baz Luhrmann, Quentin Tarantino, Robert De Niro, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Clint Eastwood, very few actors possess the same career diversity as DiCaprio. His rise from teenage heartthrob to self-made dramatic thespian has made for a long string of creative and financial wins, remaining reliable since his first feature film appearance.

Martin Scorsese's next movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, is a 3.5-hour epic based on the true story of the Oklahoma murders in the 1920s. It boasts an impressive ensemble cast, led by Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie features regular collaborators of Scorsese, up-and-coming actors, and Osage tribe first-time actors, creating an exciting amalgam of talent. Other notable cast members include Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Tantoo Cardinal, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow, all bringing their own unique strengths and backgrounds to their respective roles.

Leonardo DiCaprio continues to be one of the biggest stars in the film industry, and while he has starred in many critically acclaimed movies, his very first movie holds an impressive 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting career began in 1991, but his big break arrived in 1993 with the coming-of-age drama What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Since then, DiCaprio has been unstoppable, starring in a variety of movies and earning the praise of critics and viewers. After many nominations and becoming the subject of countless memes, DiCaprio’s talent was finally recognized by The Academy when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Revenant.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most prolific and highest-paid actors in the world, end even Leonardo DiCaprio's first feature films proved how talented he was at such a young age. Even as a child, DiCaprio forged his own creative path, proven by the fact he was asked to leave the cast of Romper Room for being too disruptive (via Cbr). Before finally winning an Academy Award for The Revenant in 2015, the fact that the incredible actor had never won an Oscar became a running gag, but DiCaprio was first nominated for the coveted award when he was just 19 years old.

When Leonardo DiCaprio introduced the Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild annual ceremony in 2020, he recalled his father taking him to the cinema to watch "Midnight Run" when he was 13 years old. During the film, his dad said to him:
"If you really want to be an actor and get into this profession, if you want to understand what great acting is, you watch that man on screen."
No, he wasn't talking about Charles Grodin; he was referring to the actor honored that night for his legendary career, Robert De Niro. The '80s and '90s were exciting times for monster movies, especially mini-monsters. The silver screen contained a plethora of miniature monsters that mischievously wreaked havoc on their victims in various scenarios. Whether it was the Critters, Gremlins, or Ghoulies film series, horror moviegoers could count on some bloody, grotesque, and often comedic entertainment from the pint-sized villain. Yet, unlike the scary movies that came later, they were never pitted against each other. This begs the question: which of these movie monsters was the best at creating carnage and mayhem?
Although each franchise has a different number of films and creatures of various abilities, respectively, there are some similarities between them. For instance, all three monster types use tools, communicate (albeit to mixed degrees), possess razor-sharp teeth and claws, and can be reproduced. Leonardo DiCaprio began his film career at age 17 in Kristine Peterson's 1991 film "Critters 3," a harrowing tale of corrupt real estate exploitation. In "Critters 3," DiCaprio played Josh, the precocious teenage stepson of a morally bankrupt slumlord, a stepfather he accidentally sentences to death when Josh locks him in a basement room with a ravenous Tasmanian devil from space. From "Critters 3," DiCaprio went on to be nominated for seven Academy Awards across the categories of Best Supporting Actor, Best Actor, and Best Picture (he served as a producer on 2013's "The Wolf of Wall Street").

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed movie stars of the modern era, but he’d have fit in perfectly during the Golden Age of Hollywood. The 46 year-old is very selective about the projects he chooses to sign on to, makes a point of collaborating with the finest directors in the industry, lends other filmmakers a hand through his Appian Way Productions, rarely gives interviews when he’s not on the promotional trail and can regularly be spotted in glamorous locations around the world with a supermodel on his arm.
Next year marks the 30th anniversary of his big screen debut in Critters 3, and DiCaprio’s trophy cabinet has been filled to the brim over the intervening decades. He finally put the online discourse to bed when he scooped the long awaited Academy Award for Best Actor at the fifth time of asking thanks to The Revenant,...

Horror has always been a fantastic starting-off point for up and coming filmmakers and artists who then go big and unfortunately never return to the genre. Have you ever seen Leonardo DiCaprio talk about “Critters 3” after going big? Or Steven Spielberg saying no to a prestige Oscar-film to direct another tense horror film? No. More often than not, filmmakers who start in horror and then expand their careers don’t go back.

Does Leonardo DiCaprio need to start rethinking the way he chooses his film projects? It’s a topic many moviegoers are discussing in the aftermath of a Hollywood Reporter article naming Leonardo DiCaprio the world’s “last movie star.” DiCaprio is one of few stars left in the industry whose name carries serious box office clout, but he hasn’t necessarily leveraged that star power to lift up women and minority directors. Guy Lodge, film critic for The Guardian and Variety, made a viral note on Twitter that DiCaprio has not worked with a female director since 1995.
“This is all well and good, and some fine work has come out of it, but I wouldn’t call his choices adventurous either: huge studio prestige productions with established male directors,” Lodge wrote in reaction to the THR story. “He hasn’t acted in a film with a female director since 1995, which...

For an actress who’s achieved global fame as Rey in the Star Wars sequels, Daisy Ridley probably has her pick of roles. It was a surprise, then, to see the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker actress appear in a trailer for ultra low-budget British horror flick Scrawl.
The preview has Ridley appearing as a character seemingly brought to life from a violent comic book created by a pair of teenagers. Although not boasting slick visuals, Scrawl does appear to go heavy on the gore. Still, the presence of Ridley in the trailer has confused many Star Wars fans, who variously call it a “bad student movie” whilst wondering “Wtf happened?!'” for her to take the role. Was it a favour to a friend? A bet gone wrong? Or was it actually the career change Ridley was gunning for all along?

The first trailer for Critters Attack is here. The little deadly creatures have been away from the pop culture landscape for nearly three decades now. However, in the modern age of Hollywood, everything old is new again. As such, this particular franchise is getting revived in a big way this year as we're not only getting the recently revealed Critters: A New Binge series over on Shudder, we're also getting this brand new movie, which brings back original franchise star Dee Wallace.
It's a trailer that should delight fans of the series. It starts off with a familiar premise, as the little creatures crash land on Earth and quickly begin devouring unsuspecting humans. Dee Wallace seems to be playing a role similar to that of Jamie Lee Curtis from the most recent Halloween, waiting and preparing for these aliens to return. Based on what we see here, she's more than ready for them.

The classic Critters horror film franchise is returning in the form of a TV series that’s set for streaming service Shudder.
Critters may be but one of several campy horror franchises from the 1980s to – akin to the soon-to-be-animated Gremlins – feature diminutive multiplying mini-monsters, but the imagery of its eponymous alien invaders – resembling demonic bipedal versions of Star Trek Tribbles with shark teeth and T-Rex arms – make them especially memorable, even if the poster image of the toilet monster from Ghoulies was more memorable in its ability to make tense experiences out of nature’s call for a generation. Regardless, Critters is getting a long-overdue return.
AMC Networks’ horror-centric Shudder streaming service will be the platform for a revival television series bearing the meta-minded title, Critters: A New Binge. Moreover, the series is arriving a lot sooner than you might have thought, since the announcement reveals...

At long last, it's time for a new Critters movie to come our way. The horror series that centers on a bunch of small furry aliens who come to earth and terrorize the locals has been dormant for some time. But in an age where everything old is new again (or even when things that are relatively new are sometimes new again) it's about time to dust this one off. Now, we have word that SyFy's Critters reboot will begin production this January.
According to a new report, the new Critters movie will begin filming this January in South Africa. As it stands, there is no information in regards to who might wind up in the director's chair, nor is there any information regarding the plot. But previous SyFy productions have shot in South Africa and this is being produced by the same network, so that seems to line up.

It seems that you should never assume that a horror franchise will be dead forever.
Bloody Disgusting have just announced that Syfy is planning to resurrect the long-dormant cult classics Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Critters. These aren’t exactly top flight franchises, but they’re both hits among horror fans, who’ll be at minimum curious to see what the network does with the properties.
Of the two, Critters is perhaps the most understandable choice. After all, it’s already seen four installments, with 1991’s Critters 3 even boasting a ‘before-they-were-famous’ turn from a young Leonardo DiCaprio. Essentially a more violent take on Gremlins, the films are dark horror-comedies about a species of malevolent furry aliens from space who cause mayhem across various locations (with the fourth one heading into space).
But it’s Killer Klowns from Outer Space that’s the real surprise. Though the film’s...

A couple of 80s cult classics are getting reboots from SyFy. Both Critters and Killer Klowns From Outer Space are set to get long overdue new entries from the cable network. At the present time, there aren't many more details beyond the fact that these movies are finally looking to make a comeback, but if this new report turns out to be true, then these may not be the only classics getting reboots from SyFy in the near future.
According to a new report, SySy is looking to make reboots a big part of their business model moving forward. Part of that includes licensing the rights for both Critters and Killer Klowns From Outer Space. The wording in the report is pretty specific in that SyFy would just be licensing the rights, not necessarily in control of them entirely. Where it gets more vague is that these are both going to be "new feature films.

I don’t like rituals, period. Whether straitlaced (Christian) or darkly purposed (Satanic), I just find them creepy…and off. So while I won’t stand on ceremony, I will watch, with fascination, films that trot out such pageantry. One of my favorites is a two part TV mini-series, The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978). Oh, and its horror, but I’m sure you already guessed that.
Originally airing on NBC Monday, January 23rd (in the NBC Monday Night at the Movies slot) and Tuesday the 24th, 1978, Dark Secret was up against the CBS juggernaut of M*A*S*H/One Day at a Time/Lou Grant. But while many were watching Hawkeye, Schneider, et al crack wise, something insidious was brewing over at The Peacock.

News this week came in that the final planned Divergent Series movie would be skipping the theaters and go direct to television/DVD. It’s a rare move for such a major studio franchise to make, and it got me to thinking about other movie series that fizzled and did the same. Come inside to check out a history of downward sliding franchises!
If I come off sounding a bit harsh about all this, it’s mostly due to the fact that it’s such a bizarre situation. It’s been awhile since a studio franchise had to dropped down to direct-to-television and it’s not a good thing. Sure, Lionsgate is trying to spin the information that it’s part of a planned way to jumpstart a spin-off TV series...but the reality is this isn’t how they wanted The Divergent Series to end.

It was another night of self-congratulating stars, passionate speeches being interrupted by play-'em-off music ("Ride of the Valkyries"? Really???), and several genuine upsets (Rylance over Stallone; Spotlight over The Revenant) — as well as a scorching Oscars monologue that will go down as one for the ages. There were inspirational and uplifting moments, there were cue-the-sad-trombone gags gone wrong, and then there was Stacey Dash wishing everyone a "Happy Black History month."
