Out now in select theaters and on iTunes is Extraordinary Tales, an animated film anthology adapting five Edgar Allan Poe stories and boasting a voice cast that includes late legends Sir Christopher Lee and Bela Lugosi, as well as Julian Sands, Roger Corman, and Guillermo del Toro. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with director Raul Garcia to discuss his film's amazing vocal lineup and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us today, Raul. Based on the trailer for Extraordinary Tales, you obviously have a real passion for the works of Edgar Allan Poe. When did you first become a fan of his fiction?

Today, the zombies from George A. Romero's classic 1960s horror film rise once again in ten separate first issues of Double Take's Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comic book series. Daily Dead recently chatted with Jeff McComsey, writer of Z-Men and Rise, who discussed expanding on Romero's living dead world, further exploring the characters of Johnny and Barbara, and much more.
Do you have fond memories of watching Romero's Night of the Living Dead in your formative years?
Jeff McComsey: I saw it at a pretty young age, probably in the mid-’90s. I remember we rented it on VHS and watched it a couple of times. It wasn’t until I was in college and we watched a bunch of old movies when we really got into it. And now since I’ve watched it professionally, I’m still impressed with what Romero did.

He’ll always be synonymous with horror films, but the screen’s most celebrated vampire was a genuine cultural polymath
Sir Christopher Lee loved to sing. I remember being at the BBC one afternoon in 1994 and hearing his voice booming majestically down the corridors of Broadcasting House – rich, mellifluous, commanding. As a longtime horror fan, I instinctively recognised that voice from the Hammer films that made Lee an international celebrity back in the 60s. But as well as being an iconic screen presence, he was an acclaimed vocalist whose powerful range could be employed from opera to heavy metal with breathtaking results. Alongside his many other accolades, Lee received a Spirit of Metal award in 2010 for his work on Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, a “symphonic metal concept album”, which cemented his reputation as a genuinely unpredictable cultural polymath. “It’s fascinating,” he said at the time, “that...

Yikes. That second bonus scene was a doozy.
ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wrapped its sophomore run on Tuesday night with a two-hour finale that pitted agents against Inhumans, added at least four (!) deaths to TVLine’s May Sweeps Scorecard, planted a seed for a future Marvel movie and, in that final, shocking sequence, had some alien goo gobble up one of our favorites.

Warning; this post is long... if you watch all the links, you'll have an hour of entertainment.
When I was 10, my school screened a 16 mm print of the The Mark of Zorro - 1940 version, starring the dashing Tyrone Power. The clash of steel, the dynamic yet graceful athleticism of the hero as he righted wrongs, attracted me, as it did many boys of my age... I wanna do that. Luckily my next school offered fencing lessons from an instructor at the nearby Sandhurst Military Academy, and my inner Basil Rathbone was set free to ultimately Captain the school team. I saw every sword fighting movie I could and still do. Yet the only duel I have ever filmed had to be shot in 3 hours... The history of the genre could fill many volumes, but here is a short introduction to Sword Cinema.

Film Legend Sir Christopher Lee turns 92 today and he is celebrating just as anyone one his age would…by releasing a heavy metal album.
'Metal Knight' is a mini album featuring 7 tracks, two of which are covers from the ‘Man of La Mancha’ musical, based on the character ‘Don Quixote’.According to Lee “Don Quixote is the most metal fictional character that I know. Single handed, he is trying to change the world, regardless of any personal consequences. It is a wonderful character to sing”.
You can preview all 7 tracks right here:
This is by no means Sir Christopher’s first foray into the world of metal. He has contributed quite a bit of voice work to projects by Manowar and Rhapsody of Fire, as well as releasing his own work. Check out our full reviews of his previous albums Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross and Charlemagne: The Omens of Death.

There's not much I can write about the illustrious career of Sir Christopher Lee that hasn't been covered thousands of times already – I mean seriously, this man embodied one of the best screen versions of Dracula, and he's played super-villains equally matched against Obi-Wan Kenobi, Gandalf and James Bond – but it's still worth mentioning that at age 91 (as of this week), the ultimate genre Renaissance man is not only continuing to take on media projects, but has also forged ahead with his latter-day career as a heavy metal vocalist. Lee has contributed guest vocals to other musical projects (most notably on albums by Manowar and Rhapsody), but three years ago he ascended to the leading role in the rock opera Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, a sweeping, bloody and cinematic concept album about the first Holy Roman Emperor, also known as King Charles the Great. Now, I think...

Yesterday was Sir Christopher Lee's 91st birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than the release of his second heavy metal album? Charlemagne: The Omens of Death was recorded with current Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner and 2009 Guitar Idol runner-up Hedras Ramos, and continues the headbanging Holy Roman concept narrative begun on Lee's 2010 opus Charlemagne: By The Sword And The Cross."I have been metal for many years, only I did not know it," Lee explained three years ago, talking about his love and respect for Rhapsody of Fire and Manowar, both of whom he'd worked with. "Lots of people see me as metal," he went on. "It has come as a great surprise." Yes. The clip above features Lee describing Black Sabbath as "one of the greatest metal bands ever," and includes footage of his Metal Hammer interview with Tony Iommi. This time, he's keen to explain,...

We've been big fans of Christopher Lee's heavy metal music career, and the actor has a new album on the way. Charlemagne: The Omens of Death will be released on May 27 (MP3, CD and vinyl) and is the follow-up to his 2010 album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross. For that project, he was given the Spirit of Metal honor in the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden God awards. The Hammer horror actor and Lord of the Rings favorite is a direct descendant of Charlemagne — a fierce military leader, and former Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Franks. Lee said of the new musical work: "The first Charlemagne album is metal, of course, but what I sang was more symphonic. Now on the second one, The Omens Of Death, it is 100% heavy metal. On May 27, British film icon Christopher Lee turns 90 years old. In his long and storied career, he's delivered countless fantastic performances in everything from medieval adventures to gothic scary stories. (You may know him as Saruman, Count Dooku, the Man with the Golden Gun or even Count Dracula.) And he has no plans to slow down, as indicated by recent roles in the Oscar-winning"Hugo" and this month's "Dark Shadows" -- not to mention an upcoming return to Middle Earth with this December's "Hobbit." Lee is not just an actor, but a decorated military man and bombastic heavy metal singer, with a crazy family lineage to boot. To celebrate the legend's 90th birthday, we present 90 reasons why Christopher Lee is awesome. 1. He's the step-cousin of "James Bond" creator Ian Fleming, and was the author's first choice to play Dr. No in the film adaptation. 2. He's in the Guinness Book of...

There’s a sort of social stigma attached to tie-ins of any sort, really. There’s something about the idea of an expanded Universe that many argue results in an unavoidable bastardisation of the source material.
Let me just define the term ‘tie-in’ within the context of this article. Tie-ins exist in across all forms of media and in any direction. You’ve got movie to comic book, comic book to movie (more common), movie to game, game to comic book, even comic book to musical album (admittedly rare, but if you listen to Coheed and Cambria, you’ll know what I mean). Some are great; most are unfortunately mediocre, but they exist in abundance, thanks to that twatty business term you may know as ‘synergy’.
I don’t think tie-ins themselves are the issue; when done right, they can provide a wealth of satisfaction, and new depths to an already well-loved character or setting.

Fluff (4 minutes)
Directed by Anthony Meadows and shot by Tim Bowe, Fluff is an awesome action-mystery-thriller ode to all the kick ass genres of cinema. The comedy is inherent, as the film is cast entirely with colorful, handmade puppets. The central character, a stuffed bear, meets up with a stuffed horse named Lewis (voiced by Tim Gowan) about a strange black disc (a button). As they flee from danger together through the woods, they run into a freaky shot-out stuffed bear-thing named Martin (voiced by Tyler Meadows), who joins them in a violent fight to the death with two sock monkeys seeking the black disc. Carnage ensues, culminating in an open-ended “what happens next” moment.

Think back to the early 1980's. Think back to director Frank Henenlotter. Think back to a little film known as Basket Case. While clearly not a film for all tastes including mine, the film definitely had cult classic written all over it. Now enter director Neil Meschino of the film Mold!. While Mold!, starring Edward X. Young, Ardis Campbell, Robert Fattorini, Chris Gentile, Lawrence George, Rick Haymes, Mike Keller and director Neil Meschino, isn't as boundary pushing as Basket Case, it captures the same spirit, the same tone as Basket Case. Working in the film's favor is the fact that it is more commercial and accessible then Basket Case, yet it is its own unique film. It's different. It has edge. It has something to it. Could director Neil Meschino have a possible cult classic on his hands? Only time will tell, but just in case Mold! does reach that...

Fuquay-varina - It was a speedy two days with major stars dropping into my neighborhood.
On a Thursday night the man who made predicted FedEx arrived at a Durham library. Mister McFeely (David Newell) still fits in his Speedy Delivery uniform and hat as he greeted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fans of all ages. Most of the ages were under seven. Luckily I had brought along a little kid in order not to stick out.
McFeely was at the end of a weeklong tour around the state to touch base with the kids. Lately whenever any star of kid focused tv shows comes to town, it’s part of some over inflated media spectacular stage show at the sports arena. There’s singing, dancing, indoor fireworks and motorcycle stunts meant to dazzle a three year old. Plus there’s a $18 convenience charge on the tickets. But this was not McFeely’s type of entertainment.

After years of toiling in some wildly successful rock bands (most notably Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver), Slash has finally made his way into the center of the spotlight with his first true solo album. It just debuted in third place on the Billboard album chart, moving over 60,000 copies in its first week on the strength of the behatted guitarist's non-stop promotion and the single "By the Sword" (a team-up with Wolfmother frontman Andrew Stockdale.
Slash is actually a tremendous collection of hard rock songs that center around the axe man's signature chunky, swirling riffs. His backing band features all of the original members of Guns N' Roses (Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler — only Axl Rose is absent). Slash is actually a tremendous collection of hard rock songs that center around the axe man's signature chunky, swirling riffs. His backing band features all of the original members of Guns N' Roses (Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler — only Axl Rose is absent). In Santana style, each track has a guest vocalist, some of which work really well (Stockdale, Ian Astbury, Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl) while others stumble a bit (Fergie, Myles Kennedy). After being dominated for weeks by movie stars, the talk shows are all about music this week. There are some excellent excuses to stay up way past your bed time in the coming days, as there will be some electrifying performances from some of the best artists working. Sadly, David Letterman will be left out in the cold, as "The Late Show" only airs twice (on Tuesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7). That seems like an excellent excuse to tune in to "The Tonight Show," as Jay Leno welcomes Slash and Andrew Stockdale (performing the new single "By the Sword" from Slash's new solo album) on Tuesday, Corinne Bailey Rae on Wednesday and Train (whose "Hey Soul Sister" continues a dominant climb up the charts) on Thursday (April 8). Leno will also chat with the likes of David Boreanaz, Demi Moore and David Duchovny.

Slash has axed plans to release his collaboration with Ozzy Osbourne as the first single from his solo album - to avoid clashing with the Prince of Darkness' new material. The Velvet Revolver guitarist recruited a number of stars, including Stacy Ferguson aka Fergie and Kid Rock, to lend their vocals to his first solo effort, "Slash", and had picked "Crucify the Dead", a track with Osbourne, as his debut release.
But he's now promoting "By the Sword", sung by Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale, since Osbourne is planning to put out his own solo disc in June. And he admits the star-studded collection is already proving problematic.
Slash tells the Pulse of Radio, "The problem with this record is, because I do have all guest singers, you run the risk of, you know, getting singles rights and interfering with the release of other people's records. So that's really what the issue was,...

Not strictly movie news, and possibly not news at all if you’ve been following the build-up over the last few weeks, but with a week to go until release, we thought now might be the time to bring your attention to the astonishing fact that Sir Christopher Lee has made a heavy metal album. "I have been metal for many years," he says, "only I did not know about it."That’s not a joke, or an early April fool. The concept album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, on which Lee sings and provides narration, has been put together by composer Marco Sabiu, who worked in the past with Ennio Morricone and Luciano Pavarotti (and, er, Kylie and Take That). According to the MySpace, Lee is backed by a 100-piece orchestra and choir, two (anonymous) metal bands, and accompanied by several “guest vocalists”.It's not his first...

In case you've forgotten, "Metal is a Way of Life", and there are few as metal as the legendary Christopher Lee. In anticipation of the March 15th release in the UK (April 20th in the Us) of concept album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, a new promo video has been released featuring Sir Christopher along with some behind-the-scenes clips, etc.
Here are the details from the Charlemagne MySpace page: Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross is the story of King Charlemagne, First Holy Roman Emperor, acted and sung by the legendary actor Christopher Lee. According to the Heraldic College in Rome, Christopher Lee is a direct descendant of Charlemagne. The Carandinis, Lee's maternal ancestors, were given the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Christopher Lee isn't actually a wizard, he just plays one in the movies (and sort of looks like one in real life, now that we think of it). But still, that hasn't stopped him from diving headlong into the mystical, magickal world of Wizard Rock, with a full-blown symphonic concept album he's calling Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross.
And, yes, we know the real Charlemagne wasn't technically a wizard (just the subject of an awesome Steely Dan song and most of the Hold Steady's Separation Sunday) but Lee's album is still a prime example of bearded, bong-glazed Wizard Rock, full of trilling strings and rolling timpani drums, songs with titles like "The Iron Crown of Lombardy" and "The Bloody Verdict of Verden," and Lee's booming voice, which, much like the legendary Sword of Erdrick, is strong enough to cleave even the heartiest of steel. Not to mention, you know,...
