Nightmare Presents: 'Waiting For the Light'
Waiting for the Light (1990)
FEARnet is proud to present brand new fiction from Nightmare Magazine. Once a month, we'll be featuring a story from Nightmare’s current issue. This month's selection is “Waiting for the Light” by Alison Littlewood. Please tell us what you think and enjoy!

Waiting for the Light

It had taken three days before the supervisor—“call me Marty”—asked Finn for the favour. He knew by the looks on the faces of the other staff—the little upturning of their heads that meant they were listening, but weren’t going to show it—that it wasn’t going to be a good favour.

“It’s nothing, really,” Marty said. “You just need to check the bridge before they close up. Alf’s supposed to do it, but he’s hurt his leg—we can’t expect him to do those stairs every night.” His tone said, they can...

Blu-ray Review: Oscar-Winning ‘The Descendants’ with George Clooney
Chicago – Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” was one of my favorite films of 2011 and, no, nothing has changed in the last 12 weeks. The window between theatrical release and Blu-ray has become so small that there’s not even time really to allow a film to age or change between a film review and a Blu-ray review. “The Descendants” was great a few months ago. And it’s still great.

Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

So, for my opinion of the film itself, check out my Chicago International Film Festival Preview, film review, and my piece on the Best Films of 2011.

But how’s the Blu-ray? Fox wasn’t about to drop the ball here and they’ve truly improved their HD transfers for new theatrical films over the last few years. “The Descendants” looks good, near the high end of Fox HD transfers, which is still a bit below Warner Bros. or Universal.

Review: The Descendants
It used to be, Tom Hanks was the everyman who took us into one film after another, giving us a chance to experience the mundane to the fantastic. That role in many ways has been ceded to George Clooney, who displays in one film after another, a charismatic vulnerability that makes you root for him regardless of the circumstances. He brings that empathy to Matt King, the lead figure in The Descendants, out this week from 20th Century Home Entertainment.

Yeah, we all now he was nominated for Best Actor but if you haven’t seen the film; you can watch the video and see the actor lose himself in the character. King is married, with two teen children, and has his world rocked, first by the wife Elizabeth (Patricia Hastie) getting sick and then learning she has been having an affair. While she lingers in the hospital, he goes...

George Clooney in The Descendants (2011)
'The Descendants' DVD extra: George Clooney breaks silence... wind, too -- Exclusive
George Clooney in The Descendants (2011)
In The Descendants, George Clooney played a solemn lawyer who finds out that his comatose wife had been having an affair before her tragic watersport accident. But even an Academy Award nomination for playing a cuckold who is forced to reconnect with his two daughters while mourning couldn’t alter his reputation as a merry prankster. Clooney is notorious for the artful gotcha, and his tomfoolery knows no bounds — he once razzed a 90-year-old Walter Cronkite with a gag that ended with the late newsman jumping in a lake.

Working with youngsters on The Descendants only seemed to bring out his inner jester.

It's About You, John Mellencamp Tour Documentary, Premieres at South by Southwest
Photograph by Kurt Markus. In the opening sequence of the new documentary, It’s About You, John Mellencamp describes his experience on a photo shoot with the doc’s director, Kurt Markus. “What the fuck are you doing?” Mellencamp shouts. To which Markus (apparently) calmly replied, “Waiting for the light to hit.” Adding any staged lighting would be “cheating”—a belief that perfectly articulates Markus’s vision for It’s About You. No frills, no gimmicks, no artificial help—just him, his camera, John, and, as he puts it, “some kick-ass music.”...
