Monster-in-Law, Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda's rom-com from 2005, is a streaming hit on Hulu, where it currently sits at number five on the streamer. The film follows Charlie (Lopez) who falls for a doctor named Kevin (Michael Vartan). After a period of dating, the couple become engaged, but that's when things take a turn for the worst. Kevin's mother, Viola (Fonda), will stop at nothing to do whatever she can to break the relationship up before they get married.
The film was a box office hit when it debuted on May 13, 2005, making over $155 million at the worldwide box office on a production budget of only $43 million. Monster-in-Law was also good counter-programming to Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which opened later that month. While it did take a critical drubbing when it opened, audiences still liked it enough to make it a hit. Currently, the film...

Some actors, like Jane Fonda and Debra Winger, retire from acting but later make a comeback, sometimes after a break of 10 to 20 years. Retirement from show business is not always permanent, as many actors return to the industry for various reasons, including the desire to work with great directors or pursue new opportunities. Notable actors like Rick Moranis, Daniel Day-Lewis, Joe Pesci, Ke Huy Quan, Shelley Duvall, and Cameron Diaz have all retired from acting at some point but have since returned to the screen.
Despite "retiring" at one point in their careers, some actors returned to acting eventually. While retirement is part of any professional journey, some actors work well into their old age. However, others retire much earlier than that. Plenty of actors over the years have announced their retirement from show business and have yet to return, from Gene Hackman to Jack Nicholson, and Amanda Bynes to Portia de Rossi.

Jane Fonda went down memory lane on The Drew Barrymore Show remembering films from her acting career. When an image of the 2005 rom-com Monster-in-Law came up, Fonda recalled the infamous slap scene opposite Jennifer Lopez that left her with an injury.
“The thing that comes to mind right away is we have a slapping scene – I slap her, she slaps me…,” Fonda recalled. “Well Jennifer, as per Jennifer, she had this enormous diamond ring and so when she slapped me one of the times it cut open across my eye – my eyebrow.”
Fonda continued, “And she’s never apologized.”
Monster-in-Law was directed by Robert Luketic and written by Anya Kochoff about aspiring fashion designer Charlie (Lopez) who has to face her mother-in-law played by Fonda who will do anything to ruin her relationship with her son. The film marked Fonda’s return to the movies after a 15-year absence since...

The world’s first all-electric passenger airplane looks like it could be at home in the sea. Instead of a traditional metal tube, its fuselage resembles an orca — with a sharp nose and a wide body that tapers dramatically to a T-shaped fin at the rear. Its wings are long, knifelike. The plane’s twin propellers, driven by quiet, piston-free motors, thrum like the future.

As someone who originated one of the most iconic gangster roles of all time — Goodfellas’ glorious flameout Henry Hill — it’s understandable that Ray Liotta wouldn’t want to pigeonhole himself with another Mob project just a few years later. Which is why, when Sopranos creator David Chase took a train all the way to Richmond, Virginia, where the actor was filming Ridley Scott’s Hannibal, to ask him to join Season Three of the series, Liotta politely but firmly declined. The part of Ralphie Cifaretto eventually went to Joe Pantoliano,...

A young woman discovers she’s a crime family heiress in “Yakuza Princess,” a grimy action-thriller set in the neon-drenched streets of São Paulo’s Japanese district. Adapted from Danilo Beyruth’s graphic novel by Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Amorim (“Motorrad), “Yakuza” delivers stylish shootouts and eye-catching swordplay but lacks the dynamic characters and story-telling panache required to lift it into the top grade. Starring Japanese American singer Masumi in her first feature role, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as an amnesiac assassin, this well produced item still packs enough punch to satisfy undemanding action fans and should perform respectably when released in U.S. theaters and on VOD on Sept. 3.
Considering São Paulo is home to the world’s largest ethnic Japanese community outside Japan (an estimated 1.6 million people), it’s surprising how rarely the city’s Nikkei Burajiru-jin (Japanese Brazilians) have been granted leading character status in feature films. “Gaijin:...

The Astrophysical Journal Letters last week reported on a real-life flare that makes the fictional plot developments look like firecrackers
(Warning: This post contains spoilers to Netflix’s “Stowaway” and the Season 2 premiere of Apple’s “For All Mankind”).
Conventional wisdom tells us that the radiation a stellar flare shoots through space stands as an untenable obstacle for human life absent the protection of Earth’s atmosphere or another appropriate barrier.
Viewers of Netflix’s “Stowaway” — and there are a lot, according to the streamer’s top-10 list — know this, thanks to the havoc a “solar storm” wreaks on Anna Kendrick’s lead character. If there were any hopes left before Dr. Zoe Levenson exits the Mts-42 and enters space amid the aftermath of the blast, the unwinnable stakes become apparent as the skin on Kendrick’s helmet-covered face is slowly scorched (the gall!).

After publishing his book The Torture Letters in January of 2020, Laurence Ralph decided to adapt it into an animated short—reckoning in both cases with systemic racism in America, in hopes that society at large will address it, and take meaningful action to stop the violence it perpetuates.
Based on over a decade of research, both projects are structured as a series of open letters to victims of police violence, and to those who have spoken out against it. Drawing attention to a police torture scandal in Chicago that unfolded over the course of three decades, they use this history as a foundation, to open up a discussion around tragedies that continue to play out.
For first-time filmmaker Ralph—who serves as a Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University—the idea in adapting his book was to connect with younger generations, in order to educate and emotionally engage them with deep-seated social issues.

Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this Covid-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
Among the highlights for new movies is the original 1988 Child’s Play, which introduced the murderous Chucky to the world in a film that arguably remains the high-point of the franchise. A reasonably realistic setting, a convincing child performance and some excellent effects work make Child’s Play a classic of the period and more than worth a rewatch. We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.
For you romance lovers out there, meanwhile, Australia and Four Weddings and A Funeral drop the same day, and family audiences can enjoy Cats & Dogs,...

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

When film-makers need a detailed artefact, they go to the in-demand Welsh creator, whose work is celebrated in a new book
See a gallery of Annie Atkins’s props
Bringing Wes Anderson’s vision for The Grand Budapest Hotel to life seems to have been a labour of love for all involved. For none more so, perhaps, than props designer Annie Atkins, for whom the shoot involved conjuring up the visual infrastructure of an entire fictional nation – flags and coats of arms, banknotes and postage stamps, police reports and newspapers – from scratch. Now a book allows Atkins to share, among other things, how she created the film’s sweetly sinister, somewhere-in-time, somewhere-in-Europe wonderland; an aesthetic remixed from the vintage passports and tattered train tickets, Stasi stationery and children’s diaries that she found during her research.
It’s a long way to Zubrowka from the small village of Dolwyddelan, in north Wales,...

It might sound contradictory, but perhaps the greatest testament to Jane Fonda’s six-decade career is how many people are unfamiliar with every facet of it. Not everyone who grew up with Fonda as the face of 1980s workout culture is immediately aware of the ambitious artistic extremes of her screen acting career; younger viewers getting to know her through her breezy, Emmy-nominated work in Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie” may not all be aware of her serious Hollywood history of political and feminist activism. Fonda’s name means different things to different people, though one hopes her most enduring reputation — and certainly the one netting her a career Golden Lion at Venice last year and now a Lumière Award — will be as one of Hollywood’s strongest, most spikily intelligent leading ladies: gifted at her craft, yes, but an actor who also brought her progressive personal politics to bear in her work,...

Jane Fonda may be coming home . to Hollywood. Variety reports that the Oscar-winning actress is eyeing two potential films to mark her return to the silver screen: romantic comedy Monster-in-Law and Cameron Crowe's new film, currently known as Elizabethtown. In Monster, Fonda would play a difficult mother-in-law, possibly opposite Jennifer Lopez, who is also negotiating to star in the New Line flick. Not much is known about the new Crowe project, only that Fonda has expressed an interest. Fonda hasn't appeared onscreen since 1990's Stanley and Iris.

Jane Fonda Ready for Hollywood Comeback
Sixties screen beauty Jane Fonda is planning a Hollywood comeback by agreeing to a new Cameron Crowe directed movie. The actress, who wowed film fans in 1968 playing sex-starved space explorer Barbarella, hasn't appeared on the big screen since 1990 movie Stanley & Iris. But the 65-year-old is reportedly "deep in talks" with Vanilla Sky director Crowe about starring in his next project. A source tells American gossip site The Scoop, "In the past, Jane has said she's not interested in returning to acting. "So she's trying to keep this project hush-hush in case it doesn't happen. "She was making movies for 30 years. She's really eager for something to work out. If this doesn't, something else will."...
