Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie was a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Barbie almost had a live-action film in the 1980s with Cannon Films, but the project was canceled after a previous failure. Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were both slated to play Barbie in separate live-action films, but both projects fell through.
Before Margot Robbie played Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s movie of the same name, the character almost made it to the big screen in live-action format a couple of times. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was one of the most anticipated movies of 2023, and went on to become a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year and earning nominations for various awards. Barbie is the famous doll’s first live-action film, and it took the audience to Barbieland to meet Stereotypical Barbie (Robbie), her Barbie friends, and all the Kens, most notably Ryan Gosling’s Ken.

Fancy some horror? We've been taking a look at the discs of Ghoulies, The Burning, Psychomania and more...
“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Indeed, for any of you readers that have ever been rudely awoken at 2am by the sound of a traumatised frog being gifted to you by your pet cat/furry psychopath, an amphibian cry of terror is probably the second worst sound there is (behind, of course, Kaiser Chiefs).

Not that frogs themselves are inherently evil, though viewing this classic dose of seventies green-themed nastiness might convince you otherwise. Slugs are Ok, too, though we’ll get on to them later on in this month’s vague...

Actor often cast in sleazy, raunchy roles
Susan Tyrrell, who has died aged 67, had all the makings of a cult movie star. Husky-voiced and eccentric, she was a dissipated flower child, somewhat resembling an underground Shirley MacLaine. No wonder she was cast in outrageous roles in Bad (1976) and Cry-Baby (1990), which gained her fans among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Tyrrell (pronounced Tie-rell), who liked to be called SuSu, was attracted to the bizarre. "I find beauty in the grotesque," she once said, "and in the sweet soul inside someone who has been able to get through their life without being a rat's ass. Such people should be collected, should be swept up immediately and kept in a box of broken people."
One of the broken people she portrayed so vividly was Oma, the pathetic, drunken barfly in John Huston's Fat City (1972), for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

Starring Stella Stevens, Shannon Whirry, Luca Bercovici "Being Granny's favorite can be murder!" -- Greetings, fellow horror fanatics! Welcome to the first installment of "Obscura Macabro", where forgotten and overlooked horror gems are resurrected from celluloid limbo and given a much deserved looking over. Tonight's film: 1995's horror/comedy "The Granny", co-written by, directed by, and starring Luca Bercovici (Ghoulies, Rockula). I loved…...

While Universal is going through their treasure troves and sharing rare items with the public in celebration of their 100th anniversary, Full Moon is doing the same. Sort of. The direct-to-video giant is apparently switching offices, and in the process they have come across a few collectible goodies of their own.
Item one for your consideration: a Ghoulies hand puppet! For those (sadly) not familiar, Ghoulies, released in 1985, was Luca Bercovici’s first film as director (followed by Rockula in 1990), and what a debut it was. Telling the story of a man moving into a sprawling mansion, where he is overcome with the obsession to have ancient demon creatures do his glowing-eyed bidding.
Quite frankly, Ghoulies II, released in 1988, is a superior movie to the original (love the carnival setting and colorful characters), but the first film in the series (that would see a third and fourth sequel before calling...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.
