After a litany of TIFF titles, Sweden's Opponent, and a pair of Latin American gems, let's take our Best International Film odyssey to Central Europe. There, we find a most curious couple from neighboring nations – a Swiss period piece about sexual repression and an Austrian docu-drama hybrid on an Italian celebrity. Both countries succeeded with the Academy in the past, having won twice each. Switzerland had its heyday in the last decades of the 20th century, taking the trophy for 1984's Dangerous Moves and 1990's Journey of Hope. For Austria, the triumph's more recent, with 2007's The Counterfeiters and 2012's Amour.

Jennifer Garner knows how important it is to help the smallest victims of a natural disaster.
As an artist ambassador and trustee for Save the Children, the actress, 45, traveled to Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in September and found an amazing resilience in the kids she met.

It has been four years since a gunman walked into an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut and opened fire, killing 20 first-graders and six educators before turning the gun on himself.
The Sandy Hook school massacre — its violence and wrenching loss, its heartbreak — still looms large for the survivors, whose lives were irreparably changed.
But their lives did not stop. In the years since the shooting, the survivors have continued on: raising children, giving back and thinking, sometimes, of the future.
On the yearly anniversary of the shooting, on Wednesday, People spoke with three parents whose children were killed at Sandy Hook.

The Antalya Film Festival feels it is imperative to show that life still goes on, and the creative and recreative power of entertainment leads the show.
Moreover, it is obvious today to those people with alert perception that men are not succeeding in ruling the world very well. Women must take on their 51% role. Let a cosmetic culture rule the world rather than a culture of arms. (Mac does happen to be a sponsor of the festival and their gifts were great, including a free makeup session for the closing night gala!).

At a Zurich Film Festival masterclass, the mogul also confirms plans to direct Mila 18 “sooner rather than later.”
Harvey Weinstein, speaking at a Masterclass at the Zurich Film Festival, said that this year’s Oscars race is “the most competitive season I’ve ever seen.”
He was responding to a question from the audience about Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman being moved back from November 2013 to spring 2014. Weinstein said this was simply a case of the film not being ready. “The only reason is because it just wasn’t ready…The score wasn’t ready, a lot of things weren’t ready…Also we’ve played no festivals on that movie, so it’s hard to get into an Oscar race without at least some festival exposure. The movie is going to be fantastic, and very glamorous. I think this could be bigger than My Week With Marilyn and in the same category...

Fans of canonical children’s book The Giver were torn when word broke last year that Jeff Bridges’ big screen adaptation of the novel was finally moving forward in the development process. On one hand, Bridges’ twinkly eyes and grizzled wisdom make him a natural fit for the titular role; on the other, The Giver’s unique, simple charms may not translate well to celluloid. But one year later, those who felt ambivalent may no longer have to worry that Hollywood will ruin their favorite story — Giver author Lois Lowry doubts that the long-incubating film will ever get made at all.

The French-language film, a gripping and beautifully-made drama with a third-act twist, revolves around a 12-year-old thief (Kacey Mottet Klein in only his second film), his mysterious guardian (Léa Seydoux from Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol), and his victims (including Gillian Anderson of The X-Files). It premiered at February’s Berlin Film Festival, where Meier won a prestigious Silver Bear Award. It subsequently played at many film festivals, including the Los Angeles Film Festival in June.
