Everything has to be a franchise these days, which means handing out prequels and sequels to stories that 100 percent don’t need them. Given that these are unholy abominations that shouldn’t exist, they have to be spiced up to have any chance of appealing to audiences, often in ways that misfire entirely.
[subtitle]5The Labyrinth [/subtitle]
The Labyrinth raised a lot of questions re: how a human glam rock icon became the king of the goblins, and Labyrinth: Coronation fails to answer those questions over the course of 12 comic books. It reveals that Jareth was born in 18th-century Venice to a maid and a nobleman who sacrificed him to the preceding Goblin King. What follows is a fairly faithful play-by-play of the story in The Labyrinth, only with Jareth’s mother forced to solve it and losing on a technicality. That’s all well and good, but it ends deliberately ambiguously...

Steven Soderbergh’s true story of a paralegal who takes on corporate villains seems a little old-fashioned 25 years on
Re-released 25 years on, this is the true story of David-and-Goliath underdog heroism that was repurposed for the movies by screenwriter Susannah Grant and director Steven Soderbergh. Brockovich is the gutsy working-class woman, played by the Oscar-winning Julia Roberts, who gets a job as a paralegal and senses that local people are getting exploited – so without any professional training becomes the American Boudicca of class-action lawsuits, leading the charge against a Californian utility company that is poisoning the groundwater and causing hundreds of families to get sick. Her affectionate, exasperated boss Ed Masry is played with vigour by Albert Finney; Aaron Eckhart is her on-off boyfriend George, and Brockovich herself has a cameo as a waitress.

Mikey Madison In Anora (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The 2025 Academy Awards concluded with a flourish, etching legacies aplenty, yet none rang out as resoundingly as the glistening indie romantic comedy-drama Anora, which commandeered five statuettes — Best Picture to Best Director, the night’s most vaunted haul.
Sean Baker, Anora’s multihyphenate helmsman, made history with four individual wins, a cataclysmic feat to surmount, but the spotlight also enunciated Mikey Madison taking home the Academy Award for Best Actress at 25. Madison’s outing as the salacious stripper Anora beguiled audiences, but did you know the actress first sauntered onto the big screen wielding a knife in a frenzied bid to attack Brad Pitt’s own Oscar-winning portrayal of Cliff Booth?

Anora was the big winner at the 97th Academy Awards, taking home the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actress (Mickey Madison), Best Director (Sean Baker), Best Original Screenplay (Baker), and Best Film Editing (Baker). Audiences who didn’t get to check out Anora in theaters won’t have long to wait as it was announced that the film will make its streaming debut on Hulu on March 17th.
The film stars Madison as Ani, “a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire. However, when Vanya’s parents catch wind of the union, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York.“

This is clearly not your parents' Motion Picture Academy. Anora won Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday, one of five awards claimed by the indie film from director Sean Baker. It's an unconventional Oscar champ to say the least, but unconventional seems to be the new standard for voters, who have made a series of daring choices over the last decade. It appears as though the Academy's efforts to expand and diversify its ranks are paying off. While diversity in business and government faces a vicious backlash, Anora shows how Dei has transformed the Oscars.

Anoradirector Sean Baker had a record-breaking evening at the 2025 Academy Awards, matched only by one of Hollywood's biggest names. Last night, Baker became the second person in history to receive four individual Oscars thanks to his provocative drama — the first being none other than Walt Disney.
Baker won four out of the five awards that Anora was nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. This stunning achievement makes him the second person ever to earn four Oscars in one night and the first person to do so in 70 years. In 1954, Walt Disney initially established this record by winning Best Documentary for The Living Desert, Best Documentary Short for The Alaskan Eskimo, Best Short Cartoon for Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom, and Best Short Subject for Bear Country. Unlike Disney, however, Baker notably won all of his awards for a single film.

Did Mikey Madison win an Oscar for portraying a prostitute in Anora? (Photo Credit – AnoraFilm Instagram)
The 2025 Academy Awards came and went in a whirlwind, forging legacies for a slew of talents, though it’s the newcomers who galvanize the most intrigue with their ties to the golden statuette. Amid the night’s fervor, one victory stood out — a triumph that spotlights both a fresh face and a storied trope.
Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old dynamo from Anora, seized her first Oscar for Best Actress, outpacing The Substance’s Demi Moore in a twist few had prognosticated. The win, flanked by Anora’s haul of Best Picture, Director, and more, incentivized a floodlight on her nascent Hollywood path.
Maddison’s raw and unapologetic portrayal of the titular sex worker elucidated a character far from cliché, cementing her ascent with a cataclysmic bang. That win didn’t transpire without etching new stats...

Olivia Palermo seems to have a soft spot for Casadei shoes. She’s often spotted wearing shoes from the Italian luxury footwear label, and her strong admiration for the brand led to a successful collaboration in 2020.
On Your Next Shoes, Olivia Palermo is featured wearing Casadei knee-high boots with a gray ribbed knit dress and a Hermès Pre-Fall 2019 dress with Casadei sandals.

The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."
A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...

Many directors are known for shooting a lot of takes. David Fincher's penchant for multiple takes led to a lot of demanding days on the "Mindhunter" set, while Stanley Kubrick's exhausting methods are infamous, such as when he made Tom Cruise walk through a door 95 times on the set of "Eyes Wide Shut." The question of whether the effort involved in this approach actually yields better results than something like Clint Eastwood's commitment to using the very first take remains unanswered at this point. But sometimes, shooting take after take results in something undeniably great. Case in point: one of Al Pacino's most memorable lines in Michael Mann's "Heat."
The 1995 crime thriller remains a touchstone of the genre, and not just because it finally saw Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro share a scene and featured one of the best gun fights ever put to screen.

The era of blockbuster rom-coms may be behind us, but Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts and Heath Ledger are still a popular part of today’s streaming mix. In addition to satisfying audiences’ desire for romance, these classic movies now also satisfy cravings for nostalgia.
“Love Actually” reigns supreme among classic rom-coms when it comes to the amount of revenue it has delivered for major streamers since 2020. Parrot Analytics’ Streaming Economics model calculates that this movie has generated over $40M in subscriber revenue for streamers globally in this time. This is likely due to the fact that it is doing double duty as both a classic rom-com and a perennially favorite Christmas movie.

Mikey Madison’s open-spirited performance as a lapdancer who falls for a feckless young client ignites a film brimful of heart, and we ought to return the love
When future historians look back at this year’s crop of Oscar nominees and ask what the world was like in 2024, what will they learn? Maybe that we’d had enough of reality, thanks. It’s telling that nine out of the 10 nominees are essentially set in the past, or in isolated or fantasy realms, from 1960s America to “Mexico”, from Wicked’s Oz to Dune: Part Two’s Arrakis. Only one entry is set in genuine, here-and-now, modern-day society. What’s more, Anora goes to places mainstream cinema rarely does: the grubby streets, the strip clubs, the all-night cafes, off-season Brighton Beach in Brooklyn and the Russian and Armenian communities who live there. Matthew Perry Julia Roberts Split ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Matthew Perry dropped a major bombshell in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. Turns out, he dumped Julia Roberts — yes, the Julia Roberts — because he thought she’d dump him first. Wild, right?
In his book, Perry goes deep into the heart of his 90s romance with the Pretty Woman star, explaining why it ended after just two months. “Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me,” he revealed.
Despite the fame, the chemistry, and the red carpet moments, Perry couldn’t shake the feeling that he just wasn’t enough. He felt like “broken, bent, and unlovable,” convinced he’d never measure up to the gorgeous and brilliant Roberts. Instead of facing the “inevitable agony of losing her,” he took matters into his own hands and ended things.

Roy Orbison’s family has teamed up with Compelling Pictures to create a feature film and documentary about the legendary musician’s life and career. Tentatively named You Got It, after one of his hits, the film will focus more on Roy’s relationship with his wife, Barbara, than on his whole life story. Barbara, who became his manager, played a crucial role in his comeback just before his sudden death in 1988.
The movie will highlight their romance, showing the ups and downs of their journey together. Barbara passed away in 2011. Roy Orbison’s sons, Alex, Wesley, and Roy Jr., will act as executive producers.

The final Oscar voting period has begun, and the year of multiple contenders has finally found its frontrunner.
For months, Hollywood has searched for its strongest best picture candidate. Now, with a sweep at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America awards, Sean Baker’s “Anora” has emerged as the film to beat. The one-two punch of a DGA and PGA win has historically been a strong indicator of Oscar success. Since the co-existence of both guilds, only six films have lost best picture at the Oscars after securing both prizes: “Apollo 13” (1995), “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), “Gravity” (2013), “La La Land” (2016) and “1917” (2019).
The $6 million indie about an outer-borough sex worker has stood out in a field of blockbusters, biopics and musicals. It’s one of only two Oscar nominees with a perfect precursor record, earning nominations from every major guild and securing key Oscar nods.

Heart Eyes slays the Valentine's Day box office by skewering romantic comedies with bloody slasher fun. Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding co-star as Seattle advertising executives targeted for slaughter after a chance meeting. Kismet proves to be a death sentence as they run for their lives while hilariously still flirting. Director Josh Ruben, known for Scare Me and his fantastic adaptation of Werewolves Within, started his career in sketch comedy and CollegeHumor shorts. Speaking to MovieWeb, Ruben credits these early experiences with establishing a good working relationship with his terrific Heart Eyes ensemble, which also includes Jordana Brewster and Devon Sawa:
"I try to speak to my actors as I would like to be spoken to. That all starts with a vibe. You have to be confident as the cruise captain, but you also need to set a precedent, or create the kind of playground where actors feel like they can take risks.

Film Editing is often the below-the-line Oscar category most frequently linked to Best Picture, even more since the Academy committed to 10 Best Picture nominations.
All five of this year’s editing nominees also received Best Picture nominations, but only three have corresponding nominations for the film’s director. Four of this year’s five nominees received nominations from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for the Ace Eddies, which have been delayed until March 14 due to the fires in Los Angeles. Noticeably missing from those nominations was The Brutalist, despite being nominated by the Academy editing branch.
According to the Gold Derby odds, Conclave would win this category, with The Brutalist close behind. However, this might be a more difficult category to pick. In the past, there have been unexpected winners, like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo. In 2022, Coda was a rare Best Picture winner that wasn’t nominated for its editing.

Throughout Josh Ruben’s brilliant new Valentine’s Day slasher “Heart Eyes,” potential suspects and would-be victims reference real romantic comedies. “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” “Crazy Stupid Love.” “Pretty Woman.” Whatever your preferred chick flick — combined with the predator-prey mania of “My Bloody Valentine” (and just a touch of the goofiness in “Scream 6”) — that should be enough to compel you toward this giddy and graphic whodunit. It’s a freaky celebration that confirms holiday horror, if it ever left, is so back, and a standout achievement in the deceptively dense category of recent romances across genre comedy.
Silly, slick, and self-aware, the latest farce from the “Werewolves Within” director is laugh-out-loud funny and boasts pops of gore that earn the comparison to Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving.” Although the killer pilgrim movie from 2023 is more stomach-churning than Ruben’s film, this nutty blend of hyper-violence and one-liners is a dark comedic delicacy.

Fans of the Netflix show Ginny & Georgia have been left wondering whether Brianne Howey is somehow related to Julia Roberts. Considering how they look strikingly similar—wide smiles and big brown eyes—netizens began wondering if there was any possible connection. Well, although we’re sorry to inform you that the duo aren’t related, Howey on the other hand did earn some boastful comparisons to Roberts.

Hollywood is full of wild rumors, but this one might just make you rethink your celeb crush. Turns out, one of the industry’s most gorgeous leading ladies allegedly isn’t a big fan of showers. Yep, while most A-listers are out here dropping insane amounts on skincare and spa treatments, Julia Roberts is apparently keeping it natural, like, really natural.

Whether it’s an eco-conscious move or just straight-up questionable hygiene, fans aren’t sure what to think.

America’s sweetheart, Julia Roberts, might not be as sweet-smelling as we thought. The Pretty Woman star once revealed to Oprah in 2008, she doesn’t use deodorant. Surprising, eh? This from the woman who captivated hearts (and Richard Gere) in the ’90s hit.

There are certainly many great actors that have never been nominated for Academy Awards, but the fact that Richard Gerestill has never been recognized is quite ridiculous. Beyond the fact that Gere has given many Oscar-worthy performances, including his incredible role last year in Paul Schrader’s drama Oh, Canada, he has also been at the center of many films that were met with serious acclaim by the industry. Few would argue that Gere didn’t deserve a Best Actor nomination along with his Pretty Woman co-star, Julia Roberts, or alongside his Primal Fear nemesis, Edward Norton. However, it is very surprising that Gere was snubbed for his performances in An Officer and a Gentlemanand Chicago, as he had to watch nearly all of his co-stars be recognized.

Exactly a year after the world premiere of his drama “Yohanna” here in Rotterdam, Indonesian director Razka Robby Ertanto is back with another attempt at a drama involving strong women. “Midnight in Bali” which screens in Harbour section of IFFR, is a work very different from what Ertanto has done so far. The story lets us into the life of transgender woman Bulan (Juan Bio One) who has found and lost her big love, and is determined to change that.
Midnight in Bali is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
Bulan is optimistic by nature, and there is barely anything that can shake her good mood. Barely doesn’t mean never, so even she occasionally can’t help but feel the blues. By day she doesn’t do much but chain smoke and contemplate this and that, by night she is at the local gay bar performing on stage or attending numerous parties.

Subhash K Jha in this special feature reflects on Preity Sinta’s career and shares a throwback conversation with the actress when they discussed her role in the hit film Dil Chahta Hai.
At one point of time, Preity Zinta and I used to be friends, so close that she once told me if she had ten guests at her wedding, I would be one of them. We’ve met several times over the years, once famously for lunch at a high-end Mumbai restaurant with Karan Johar, where heads turned towards us as Preity, Karan, and I entered.
The last time I met her was when she came home for lunch in Patna. We haven’t been much in touch since then, after her marriage and babies. But I have only good wishes for this Zinta Dil actress.
Among the work she did, Preity was understandably the proudest of Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai.

Just as Cameron Diaz gets Back in Action opposite Jamie Foxx and Glenn Close, one of her earliest movies is coming to a new streamer. My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring alongside Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman) and Dermot Mulroney, came out in 1997 and is coming to Paramount+ February 1. The rom com starred Roberts as Julianne Porter, the best friend of Mulroney's Michael O'Neal as she comes to support him at the wedding to Diaz’s prim and proper Kimberly Wallace. The only problem is that Julianne is in love with Michael. The rom com sports a Certified Fresh 74% Critic's Score on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. If you've had enough of the stranglehold that giant corporations have on all of us and are looking for a bit of catharsis this January, look no further than Erin Brockovich. The 2001 Best Picture nominee from director Steven Soderbergh not only introduced the world to the real-life story of the legal battle between the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the residents of Hinkley, California—it introduced the world to a very different side of its star, Julia Roberts. Gone are the doe eyes from Steel Magnolias and the easy, megawatt smile from Pretty Woman. In Erin Brockovich, Roberts—who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the titular Brockovich—leaves her charming Hollywood starlet typecast behind to play the haggard but woefully determined legal assistant.

Julia Roberts confessed to trying magic mushrooms, and not only that—she said it was “nice” and “not gonna lie.” It was a shocking moment, especially since most celebs would’ve dodged the question entirely. Julia Roberts Shared Beliefs (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Julia Roberts, known for Pretty Woman and Notting Hill, has always been selective about nudity on-screen. Now, she’s sharing why she avoided stripping down in her roles.
In an interview with screenwriter Richard Curtis for British Vogue, Roberts shared her perspective. She said, “I think it would be more to the point that the things I choose not to do represent me.” For Roberts, it wasn’t about criticizing others who made different choices but rather preserving a certain integrity. “Not to be criticising others’ choices, but for me to not take off my clothes in a movie or be physically vulnerable is a choice that I guess I make for myself.”
This conscious decision aligns with her carefully curated, G-rated career. From My Best Friend’s Wedding to Runaway Bride, Roberts built a reputation for playing charming, relatable, and occasionally steamy roles...

There are a lot of movies considered to be classics that simply can’t be presented in the same way today. While it might not be number one on the list, no one would be surprised if Garry Marshall’s 1990 rom-com, Pretty Woman, would be up there in the Top 10. Starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, the film is a little bit (maybe a lotta bit) out of touch with the world 35 years in the future, but it’s still a classic that deserves to get a few views during the most romantic month of all. Right now, audiences in the mood for a little not-so-politically correct romance can head over to Max where Pretty Woman is streaming and celebrate Valentine’s Day with an iconic duo.

Picking out roles in the entertainment industry isn’t always as easy as A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt make it look. There’s always a bit of gamble associated with every project that can turn it into a classic or even tank it at the box office. Ask Michelle Pfeiffer, for the actress has experience in turning down a role that went on to establish Pitt’s career.

This is not the first film in which American director Sean Baker has deep-dived into the life of a sex worker. His 2015 gem Tangerine followed the life of transgender sex worker. Baker’s Red Rocket was about an aging porn star.
Baker’s best work Florida Project trailed a bright 6-year of modest means Moonee through her summer adventures.
In Anora, Baker’s latest and presumably best work the heroine is a spunky material girl, a bar dancer and a sex worker named Anora, played with a high-strung fidelity by Mikey Madison.
When the flamboyant , feelingly fetching film opens we are shown multiple montages of Anora enjoying her sex time with various clients. There is no angst or poignancy about Anora’s vocation which like an extended vacation for Anora.
Once she meets the immature Russian heir Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn) the smitten rich brat offers to buy her exclusive services for a week.

Let’s start with Robert Altman’s 1992 “The Player” and its opening frenetic camera panning sequence: During that hilarious, farcical rapid-fire parade of studio-insider-wannabe sights and sounds, we see a quick pitch to make a film that is deemed as “Out of Africa meets Pretty Woman.” Over three decades later, we’ve actually witnessed a misguided facsimile of “Mean Streets” meets “Pretty Woman.”

Julia Roberts is one of the most influential and iconic actresses to have ever gotten success in Hollywood. An Oscar-winner for Erin Brockovich, Roberts is also seen as the one actress who single-handedly bridged the gap between the salaries of male and female actors.
This journey, began with 1990’s Pretty Woman, which paid her just $300k for a role she eventually became iconic for. However, while she would go on to become the most well-paid female actor in the industry, her work on Pretty Woman also brought her backlash from feminists.

Julia Roberts had been nominated for two Oscars before she finally won for her leading role in the legal drama Erin Brockovich. The actress starred in Steven Soderbergh’s intense yet witty drama about a feisty paralegal who takes it upon herself to sue a corporation for the Hinkley groundwater contamination on behalf of over 650 plaintiffs.
Roberts reportedly took more than the assigned 45-second speech for her victory and thanked a host of people for her win in the four-minute speech. However, she famously forgot to thank the real-life Erin Brockovich on stage. Brockovich, however, reportedly did not mind the oversight even as Roberts made up for it afterward.

Julia Roberts was the ‘it girl’ of the ‘90s when she had her breakthrough with the romantic comedy Pretty Woman. The actress became the face of rom-coms for the decade in Hollywood and her signature charm and screen presence made her a star. While she was still making blockbuster films, one drama propelled her to the greats.
Roberts starred in Erin Brockovich as the eponymous heroine who takes on a large corporation for contaminating water. The Runaway Bride star played real-life paralegal and activist Brockovich in the film, which won her an Oscar. However, she was reportedly not the first choice from the real Erin Brockovich herself.

After watching the scene in “The Substance” where Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, repeatedly applies and wipes off lipstick in front of a mirror — a chilling metaphor for identity, erasure and self-loathing — I couldn’t have imagined that critics and awards voters would embrace it. Yet here we are, with Moore emerging as a frontrunner in the Oscar race for her career-defining performance in Coralie Fargeat’s provocative body horror film. Her Golden Globes win Sunday not only cements Moore’s legacy but also shines a long-overdue spotlight on horror as a genre worthy of awards season acclaim.
At 62, Moore is on the verge of earning her first-ever Oscar nomination for best actress. Her haunting and multilayered portrayal of an aging star who takes a mysterious serum to regain her youth — only for the experiment to spiral into a surreal nightmare — has been hailed as a masterclass in physical and emotional transformation.

Legendary actress Julia Roberts, during her career, has had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in the industry. Through movies such as Erin Brockovich, the Ocean’s series, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Roberts has proven her mettle both as an actress and a collaborator.
However, one particular big name, who worked with Roberts on 1994’s I Love Trouble, did not share the best experience with the actress.
