5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in May 2023
Image
This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies, with each one reflecting a special event or day in May.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include a tense battle between mothers, a tale of evil in the suburbs, a fast-food slasher, a twisty wartime horror story, and an indie slow burn with a Hitchcockian vibe.

You’ll Like My Mother (1972)

Directed by Lamont Johnson.

The movie stars Oscar winner Patty Duke as young widow Francesca, who’s visiting her late husband’s mother (Rosemary Murphy) for the first time at a remote house in snowy Minnesota. Soon things take a turn when Francesca becomes not only stranded at her in-law’s house, but also drugged and taken prisoner.

Just in time for Mother...

Hookers! Devil worshippers! A naughty teenage voyeur! A deadly knife, a lethal sedan and a chainsaw-wielding psychopath! Nasal Spray! CineSavant breaks with the disc-reviewing norm and abandons journalistic integrity. Well, not really, but it is a heck of a lot of fun to finally review a film I edited 32 years ago, on a happy moviemaking money-losing vacation from Cannon Films’ advertising department.

Exclusive Interview: Michael Biehn & Jennifer Blanc-Biehn on Indie Filmmaking, Alien 5 & More
Many know Michael Biehn from his iconic roles in James Cameron’s Aliens, The Terminator, and The Abyss, but in recent years he and his wife and business partner Jennifer Blanc-Biehn have been a tremendous force on the indie scene with their production company, Blanc-Biehn Productions, which provides a platform for indie filmmakers—including themselves—to tell new stories and interact with their dedicated fan base.

Michael and Jennifer were recently at San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Aliens, and I had a chance to sit down with the duo to discuss their grassroots approach to indie filmmaking, Michael’s desire to play Hicks once again in a new Alien movie, and much more.

Jennifer talked about the key to being a grassroots production company by interacting with fans and getting involved with talented actors, writers, and female filmmakers.

Jennifer Blanc-Biehn: There are a lot of people like this.

First Poster and Still of Jennifer Blanc's The Night Visitor
Jennifer Blanc of Blanc/Biehn Productions has spent a lot of time in front of the camera as well as behind the scenes as a producer, but The Night Visitor represents her directorial debut and we've got an early tease for you.

When this news hit my inbox this morning, my heart initially sank. Not for anything to do with this particular film, but because I initially feared someone was remaking the absolutely miserable 1989 Night Visitor. That film, an infamously shameless attempt to remake Rear Window using the same exact template of Tom Holland's Fright Night, is best forgotten and I should be ashamed of even mentioning it in passing.

Thankfully, my fears weren't warranted, and director Jennifer Blanc's The Night Visitor sounds pretty damn cool. This amalgamation of horror and science fiction centers around a mother (Brianne Davis) and her efforts to protect her six-year-old son from a malevolent alien.

Popcorn, starring Jill Schoelen, coming to DVD in a deluxe edition?
Popcorn (1991) Raise your hand if you are a fan of the 1991 slasher "Popcorn" starring genre vets Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather), Dee Wallace (The Howling), Derek Rydall (Night Visitor) and Kelly Jo Minter (Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child). If you're a fan of the movie, like myself, then get ready for a potential celebration as a fan of the movie is actively trying to bring the film back out to the masses with an array of all new special features in a deluxe DVD edition.

Back when I was a kid, I remember being enticed by the TV spots for a new slasher film coming out entitled Popcorn. I waited in anticipation of the film, but it never arrived at my local theater. Finally, I caught the film one late night on Cinemax and instantly fell in love with it. I loved the homage to horror films of the past.
