During the weekend of the Oscars, Feb. 28 to March 2, the most-viewed Best Picture nominee was “A Complete Unknown,” was seen in 182,000 households, likely aided by its Feb. 25 launch on VOD. Meanwhile, eventual Best Picture winner “Anora” was seen in 82,000 households, placing it fifth among the nine nominees.

Now, many of these films may have been seen in theatres during their initial release, and some can expect a bump in the weeks to come. But the main story on streaming this week is TV series, which hold eight of the 10 spots.

The movie centers on the Bliss family as they battle a demonic force that has taken a hold of Caleb, their young son. The way that Mo’Nique plays the resolute mother Ebony stands out because it gives emotional nuance to a part that could have easily been formulaic. Unquestionably powerful, the exorcism sequences use eerie sound design and imagery to evoke a real sense of dread. But the movie can’t really stand out in the genre because of its reliance on well-known cliches and predictable story aspects. Even while the technical aspects and acting are excellent, the storyline feels a little predictable and doesn’t provide many surprises.

Instead, Laurie was, 40 years later, still wounded by the events of the 1978 film, and had become a ragged survivalist, outfitting her home with booby traps and training herself how to use weapons in the off chance that Michael should ever escape the local mental institution and begin his killing spree again. Perhaps predictably, that very thing happens.
