Once Upon A Time In Hollywood | David Fincher’s sequel appears to have a title
David Fincher
The title of David Fincher’s sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood appears to have been revealed – and it’s too long to fit here.

It’s highly unusual for a piece of industry gossip to appear unannounced in the middle of a journalist’s question, but that seems to be what happened earlier this week. In an interview with Sinners director Ryan Coogler, Deadline writer Mike Fleming Jr asked a 150-word question that appears to reveal the title for director David Fincher’s sequel to Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.

In a further twist, there’s also what appears to be a morsel of new information about said sequel’s plot. As spotted by World of Reel, the relevant bit of Fleming Jr’s question goes like this:

Quentin Tarantino creates these characters and mythologies so rich they beg for sequels he never had time to make.

The B-Side Ep. 159 – The Coen Brothers (with Stephen Sajdak)
Image
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we talk about two American icons: Joel and Ethan Coen. Our guest is an icon all his own: Stephen Sajdak from the We Hate Movies podcast!

We discuss the B-Sides The Hudsucker Proxy, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Intolerable Cruelty, and Burn After Reading. There’s also time given to their remake The Ladykillers.

We make many references to Adam Nayman’s well-researched and well-considered book The Coen Brothers This Book Really Ties the Films Together, explore the critical success the filmmakers had with Fargo, and how they filmed The Man Who Wasn’t There in color and then printed it to black-and-white film.

Other topics include the Coen Brothers’ film Hail Caesar! and their childhood fascination with biblical epics like Quo Vadis,...

Robert Trebor Made Villains Iconic on TV, Xena: Warrior Princess Star Dies at 71
Image
Let’s talk about that one actor. You know the one the guy who pops up in every fantasy show from the ’90s. He plays someone shady but lovable and somehow steals the scene even when surrounded by gods, demigods, and the occasional leather-clad warrior princess. Yep, him.

You never quite remembered his name, but the moment he appeared on screen, you’d lean back, point dramatically at your TV, and say, “That guy!” He was the master of sly side-eyes, smarmy grins, and sudden sincerity that made you rethink how much you judged his character.

Robert Trebor in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys | Credits: Anchor Bay Entertainment

He wasn’t the hero. He wasn’t quite the villain. He was that lovable in-between chaos gremlin who made your favorite scenes, well, your favorite. And now, we raise our goblets or oversized tankards to the legend behind it all Robert Trebor.

Image
No Country for Old Men is the 2007 award-winning neo-Western by the Coen Brothers, based on the hit book by Cormac McCarthy, and both the movie and novel are populated with memorable characters. The movie follows a man named Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), who stumbles upon a cartel's suitcase full of money and decides to run with it. Wake Up Dead Man: Daniel Craig hopes Netflix puts the Knives Out sequel in theaters for longer than one week
Image
Netflix isn’t always keen to give its movies a substantial release in theaters, but Daniel Craig hopes they’ll make an exception for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The actor told Variety that he hopes the third Knives Out film gets to play in theaters for longer than a single week, which is all Netflix gave Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

“You know I do,” Craig said. “Hopefully, Netflix will push it out a bit, and people will get to see it. The people I speak to — the fans, I suppose — all they want to do is take their families and go see it at the cinemas. That’s all they want to do. Hopefully we can give them that experience.” Wake Up Dead Man is slated to debut on Netflix in 2025 but doesn’t have an official release date, so there’s still plenty...

How ‘Saturday Night’ recreated Studio 8H on a massive Atlanta soundstage
Image
Production designer Jess Gonchor has worked on some of the most acclaimed and rewatchable movies over the last two decades, including every feature film directed by Bennett Miller, every Joel and Ethan Coen movie from “No Country for Old Men” through “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and notable one-off titles such as “The Devil Wears Prada,” Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” and John Krasinski’s recent hit “If.”

“To be a production designer, you have to become an expert in a subject in a very short amount of time. So when I get a job on something, I start researching it immediately,” Gonchor tells Gold Derby.

But for his latest project, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” Gonchor was already well-versed in the material. The film is about the first-ever “Saturday Night Live” episode and unfolds in real-time as the clock hits 11:30 p.m. on...

Peter Dinklage
Brothers review – throwaway madcap comedy wastes a host of stars
Peter Dinklage
Peter Dinklage, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei and Brendan Fraser are lost in this brief and silly Amazon caper about low-level criminals

One thing among many that Joel and Ethan Coen seem to instinctively understand is the art of giving their characters funny names: when and how to drop something pleasingly ornate, when to pull back a little, how to toss them off so they don’t sound self-consciously ostentatious. It’s a delicate art; on paper, a character like Moke Munger (Josh Brolin) or his brother Jady (Peter Dinklage) might sound funny and distinctive. But if you’re not careful, your screenplay will soon be over-explaining them as childhood mispronunciations that stuck, and nonetheless surrounding them with other characters sporting similarly nonsensical names like Farful, Freddie Unk or Uncle Crabcake. The differences between those monikers and genuine Coen creations like Hi McDunnough (from Raising Arizona) or Burt Gurney (from Hail Caesar!

George Clooney Is “A Little Irritated” With Quentin Tarantino: “Dude, F*** Off”
Image
George Clooney is “a little irritated” with Quentin Tarantino.

The veteran actor is taking issue with the famed director’s apparent comments about his celebrity status.

In a new GQ cover interview, along with his upcoming Wolfs co-star Brad Pitt, the subject of Tarantino came up and Clooney said, “Quentin said some shit about me recently, so I’m a little irritated by him. He did some interview where he was naming movie stars, and he was talking about [Pitt] and somebody else, and then this [interviewer] goes, ‘Well, what about George?’ He goes, ‘He’s not a movie star.’ And then he literally said something like, ‘Name me a movie since the millennium.'”

Continued Clooney: “And I was like, ‘Since the millennium?‘ That’s kind of my whole fucking career.”

At this, Pitt laughed.

“So now I’m like, all right, dude, fuck off,” Clooney added. “I don’t mind giving him shit.

Weapons: Alden Ehrenreich joins Josh Brolin and Julia Garner in Barbarian director’s next film

Last year, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and the film’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Cregger’s next film, a mysterious horror project called Weapons… which was, at one point, set to star Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us. The Best Quotes From Coen Brothers Movies, Ranked
Image
The Coen Brothers are some of the most incredible filmmakers currently working. Throughout their prolific career, they've been nominated for thirteen Academy Awards and won four of them. They're known primarily for their ability to write cross-genre films and even won the Palm d'Or for their film Barton Fink back in 1991.

However, their remarkable writing skills are what set them apart from the rest of the industry. They have such a unique voice, often marked by repetition of the same lines for comedic effect and powerfully distinct characters. This leads their movies to be some of the most quotable in the recent past.

"Would That It Were So Simple" Movie - Hail, Caesar!

Hail, Caesar! is one of the Coens' most misunderstood films. It's widely regarded as one of their worst movies. Though it was received well by critics, audiences often found that it didn't resonate with them if they...

Drive-Away Dolls Review: Ethan Coen’s Eminently Likable Queer Crime Caper Aims Low and Delivers
Image
The kind of movie made to stumble upon surfing cable at 2 am in a half-awake, half-intoxicated stupor, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls aims for a lower artistic bar than anything the director (and certainly his brother) has previously approached, which accounts for much of its charm. Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke first completed the script some two decades ago––titled Drive-Away Dykes both then and now, if one goes by the end credits––and the film’s B-movie, pleasure-first appeal lies in the feeling that they simply dusted off a copy and immediately embarked on production. A slapdash narrative populated with eminently likable characters best described as joke-delivering caricatures, this marvelously queer road-trip comedy caper is a fleet-footed ride designed to pack in as much sex, violence, and psychedelic mind trips as an 84-minute runtime will allow.

Set in 1999 to ensure cellphones, Google Maps, and other modern tracking devices don...

‘Fair Play’ Star Alden Ehrenreich & Filmmaker Chloe Domont Say The Pic Makes Audiences “Feel Seen” – Contenders Film L.A.

Fair Play star Alden Ehrenreich and writer-director Chloe Domont said they have been approached by many viewers who describe similar experiences to those portrayed in the film. The pic premiered at Sundance and is streaming on Netflix, so they have had many such encounters in 2023.

“At Sundance, the whole world there was very interesting,” Ehrenreich shared Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles. “You’re walking down the street and having people come up to you. This woman came up to me and said, ‘Me and my husband work together at this place.’ She makes more money than him. They were secretly dating and didn’t tell anybody. ‘This is our story.’”

Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor play Luke and Emily, a couple working together at a financial firm. When Emily gets a promotion Luke was expecting for himself, it puts a strain on both their relationship and careers.

10 Movies That Would Have Been Much Better As TV Shows
Image
Some movies, like Mean Girls and The Irishman, would have been better as TV shows, allowing for a deeper exploration of the world and characters. A TV series adaptation of Fantastic Beasts could have enriched the Harry Potter universe similarly to how The Mandalorian and its offshoots have expanded Star Wars. Ocean's 8 and Hail, Caesar! would have benefited from being TV shows, allowing for organic character and plot development without the burden of comparisons to previous films.

A lot of movies have premises that are easily adapted for TV shows, but some of these stories would have been better just formatted for the small screen in the first place. Plenty of films have inspired hit TV series in the past, like M*A*S*H, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and What We Do in the Shadows, with many shows turning out even better than the movies they're based on.

Alden Ehrenreich's Oppenheimer Character Doesn't Have A Name For A Specific Reason
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It seems a little trite and obvious to put into words, but the film "Oppenheimer" had to be made carefully when it came to the movie's optics. The ostensible protagonist of the biopic is J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), a man whose life and legacy are fraught with numerous political, social, and moral issues that cannot be easily resolved in reality, let alone a single motion picture. Added to that is writer/director Christopher Nolan's unique approach to telling his story, which revolves around adopting an intensely subjective point of view, an aesthetic that began with the movie's script being written in the first person (from Oppenheimer's perspective) and continued as far as the depiction of a number of surreal, dreamlike visions that Oppenheimer experiences during the film.

In adapting the book "American Prometheus" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin,...

Alden Ehrenreich has been acting since the mid-2000s, but the actor has garnered significant attention in recent years for his variety of roles in film and TV. Ehrenreich started his acting career in 2005 when he appeared in "Supernatural," and from there, he went on to have numerous roles in projects like "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine," and Joel and Ethan Coen's "Hail, Caesar!"

Harry Potter Cast’s Best Post-hp Roles
Image
A little over a decade ago, actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint stood on a train platform, with questionable “middle age” makeup applied, and waved goodbye. Their characters were saying goodbye to their onscreen kids, but they were really waving farewell to millions of moviegoers and readers who grew up with their versions of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. In a way, the actors were also bidding adieu to their onscreen characters.

Admittedly a decade is not a super long time (though it’s a lifetime as far as media company CEOs anxious to exploit IP are concerned). Yet in these past 10 years, we’ve watched thespians we once knew as children mature into grown-up working actors, and some of the favorites who played their teachers and mentors go on to win Oscars and greater acclaim. Below are some of the best roles the Harry Potter cast has achieved since graduating from Hogwarts.

12 Oppenheimer Actors You Didn't Realize Were Former Child Stars
Image
If there's one thing that you can say about Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," it's that the three-hour historical epic about the father of the atomic bomb boasts an incredibly deep bench. Nolan packs the film with well-known and well-liked actors, with many big names seemingly happy to sign on for little more than a cameo if it let them be part of "Oppenheimer." But aside from the Matt Damons and Kenneth Branaghs, there's also a surprising number of cast members who began their careers as child stars.

Some came up during the mid-2000s golden age of the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, while others date back decades earlier. Also, several have since gone on to lead well-developed and respected careers, while others are still in the process of proving themselves as adult actors in their own right. Whether they're child stars who audiences are surprised to see in grown-up roles,...

Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich Try to Mix Love and Work in ‘Fair Play’ Trailer (Video)
Chloe Domont with Letterboxd at TIFF
Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” sparked one of the few bidding wars at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix has dropped the first trailer for all to see. At a festival where even seemingly surefire titles like “Cat Person” went without a buyer, “Fair Play” was snagged f0r $20 million from Netflix. That’s shy of the record $25 million that Apple paid for eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda,” but who’s counting?

The relationship drama/corporate melodrama stars Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton”) and Alden Ehrenreich (“Oppenheimer”) as a pair of co-workers secretly dating who come to emotional blows over a coveted promotion. The young lovers struggle with the price of success and the limits of professional ambition as writer/director Domont’s feature debut deconstructs the destructive gender dynamics that can pit partners against each other amid a rapidly transforming world.

With 90% and 7.6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, “Fair Play...

Alden Ehrenreich's Best Performance Is in Hail Caesar - Not Oppenheimer
Image
The following contains spoilers for Oppenheimer, which is now playing in theaters.

Alden Ehrenreich is being celebrated for giving one of the best performances in Oppenheimer. Portraying a nameless Senate aide to Robert Downey, Jr.'s Lewis Strauss, nobody went into the movie expecting him to shine as brightly as he does. He steals every scene he's in, as his naïveté and reactions to the horrors he's seeing mirror those of the audience. Not only that, but he gets to drop one of the film's best lines at the end. However, this isn't the first time the young actor has held his own amid a truly star-studded ensemble -- nor is it the best.

Ehrenreich plays a major role in the Coen Brothers' 2016 comedy Hail, Caesar!, which boasts Scarlett Johansson, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, and Josh Brolin. With an ensemble cast like this, excellent performances that make the most of...

What’s Coming to Tubi in June 2023, Including ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ ‘The Adnan Syed Story,’ ‘Magic Carpet Ride’
Image
Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. They have one assignment: assassinate Nazi leaders. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed the unconventional war drama. Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Walz co-star.

Watch the trailer of “Inglourious Basterds”:

The network is also streaming the original documentary “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story” on June 7. The murder of teenager Hae Min Lee was the focal point of a “Serial” podcast, which questioned if boyfriend Syed was her killer. After serving 22 years in prison, Syed was released, still proclaiming his innocence. Now, he may return.

Another streamer original, “Magic Carpet Rides,” arrives June 14. It centers on a social influencer torn between sharing her budding romance or honoring her boyfriend’s request to keep their life private.

Every Frances McDormand & Joel Coen Movie Ranked
Image
Frances McDormand and Joel Coen have worked on several movies together throughout their respective careers, and the married couple's creative output together has varied in quality. The pair work excellently together, as McDormand is among the few actresses that fully understand Joel and Ethan Coen's sharp and witty sense of humor, bringing the brothers' movies alive with just the right amount of eccentricity and bold acting choices. It’s because of this mutual understanding that the couple’s collaborations rank among their best projects.

McDormand and Coen met during the audition process of their first movie together, Blood Simple, and they’ve reunited creatively on many occasions since. She has been given the chance to play some of the Coen brother’s best characters, and while not all of their collaborations have been met with the same amount of acclaim, the duo is still considered one of Hollywood’s greatest power couples.

The Big Lebowski Sums Up Everything You Need To Know About The Coen Brothers
Image
When "The Big Lebowski" hit cinemas 25 years ago, most people had no idea what to make of it. Sure, it made immediate fans of some, but the movie was met with a heavy dose of bewilderment. In the critical community, this confusion came from the fact that Joel and Ethan Coen were coming off of their Oscar-winning film "Fargo," released just two years earlier. Though they had made plenty of celebrated films prior, "Fargo" was this unimpeachable, darkly funny thriller that could satiate your average audience member and already established Coen fan alike. They crystallized something in that film that made it seem like the brothers would just be building off of its foundation afterward.

But that's not what happened. The Coens took a sharp left turn and made an offbeat stoner comedy that riffed on the classic tropes of film noir. They had become "serious" filmmakers with hardware to show for it,...

‘Cocaine Bear’ Writer Jimmy Warden on the One Line He Wouldn’t Cross With True Crime Story
Image
When is a true story not a true story? When it’s “Cocaine Bear,” now playing in theaters courtesy of Universal Pictures. Directed by Elizabeth Banks and penned by Jimmy Warden, the not-quite-true story concerns a black bear minding her own business who stumbles upon cocaine dropped from a drug-smuggling plane. The bear gets high on the supply and eventually threatens to turn a dozen or so small-towners into lunch meat.

“Cocaine Bear” is very loosely based on a true-life crime story that occurred in the forests of America in 1985. A 175-pound American black bear was found dead in northern Georgia having overdosed on cocaine. The drugs were dropped out of a plane by smugglers in Tennessee, and the unlucky bear stumbled upon the ill-gotten goods, sampled the product and promptly dropped dead. The so-called “cocaine bear,” also known as “Pablo Eskobear,” was stuffed and displayed at a mall in Kentucky.

Inside Llewyn Davis Is the Coen Brothers’ Most Empathetic Movie
Image
While Joel and Ethan Coen have dabbled, both collectively and individually, in film genres that run the gamut from hard-boiled noir to Hollywood satire, all the way back around to screwball comedy (Raising Arizona), and even Shakespeare (last year’s The Tragedy of Macbeth from just Joel), the revered fraternal directing duo are known for making a certain aesthetic of film that is undeniably unique to them. In a typical Coen brothers film, a lead character is punished to a great extreme, and often by forces beyond their comprehension. Think of the scribe in the Tinseltown nightmare Barton Fink, who can’t write but a word of his screenplay due to being besieged on all sides by nosy neighbors, overbearing studio heads, and assorted human vultures. Or how about Larry Gopnik, the put-upon protagonist of A Serious Man, who must bear the brunt of his wife’s infidelity and his...

Taron Egerton Reveals Why He Turned Down ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’: ‘I Just Didn’t Feel It’
Image
In another galaxy far, far away, Taron Egerton would have starred as a young Han Solo.

The “Black Bird” actor revealed during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via The Independent) that he auditioned for and ultimately turned down leading the “Star Wars” 2018 prequel film, “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

“I’ll be honest, I got on the Falcon,” Egerton explained, referencing the Millennium Falcon. “I was with Chewie. I was in the full costume. I felt like I got there, I did it, I lived it.”

But something still felt off about playing the younger version of the beloved hero that Harrison Ford made famous.

“It just felt to me like I didn’t feel…like you know when we mentioned earlier, that thing when I read the ‘Kingsman’ script and I was like, ‘This is…I’ve got to do this. This is my part,'” Egerton admitted. “I just didn’t feel it.

Bradley Cooper’s unforgettable ‘Licorice Pizza’ entrance was formative for Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman [Exclusive Video]
Image
Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” is well into its running time when Bradley Cooper literally stomps into the frame and promptly takes over the entire movie. Playing Jon Peters, the Hollywood producer best known at the time for his relationship with Barbra Streisand, Cooper comes in hot and only gets more manic as his scenes progress.

“Do you know how I am?” a wired Cooper as Peters asks a stunned Gary (newcomer Cooper Hoffman) as the youngster is set to deliver a waterbed to Peters’ home. “Do you know who my girlfriend is?” When Gary says he does, it sets off a quick and hilarious back and forth reminiscent of “Who’s on first?” or the “would that it were so simple” scene from “Hail Caesar!” Unfortunately for Gary and his friend Alana (fellow newcomer Alana Haim), things only get more fraught from there. (Watch the beginning of Cooper’s first scene exclusively below.

Robert Downey Sr. Dies, Director, Actor and Father of Robert Downey Jr. Was 85
Image
Sad news to report, as Robert Downey Sr. died in his sleep at his NYC home after a battle with Parkinson's Disease, according to his wife. He has left a legacy that spans many careers and helped lead the Absurdist movement, basement budget, independent films, coming of age in counterculture anti-establishment 1960s America.

His work in the late 1960s and 1970s was classic anti-establishment, echoing the nonconformity promoted by larger counterculture movements which led to new freedoms, including the breakdown of codes on censorship. His 1970s films were independently made on shoestring budgets and were relatively obscure in the Absurdist movement.

One of his first underground films, Ball's Bluff, a fantasy short about a Civil War soldier who awakens in Central Park in 1961, put him on the map. He moved into big-budget filmmaking with the surrealistic Greaser's Palace. His most recent film was Rittenhouse Square, a documentary capturing life in a Philadelphia park.
