The Oscars will honor the best movie of the year this Sunday, but the infamous Razzie Awards have crowned the “worst” of 2024’s films.

Sony’s much-derided superhero film “Madame Web” has the (dis)honor of winning three Razzies, including worst picture, actress for Dakota Johnson and screenplay. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” another divisive superhero entry,” led with seven nominations and took home screen combo for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel.

Francis Ford Coppola won for directing his big-budget epic “Megalopolis,” and star Jon Voight won supporting actor for the film — shared with his turns in “Reagan,” “Shadow Land” and “Strangers.” Coppola’s “Megalopolis” received six nominations, which was tied for second-most nods with “Madame Web,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan.”

The famed filmmaker responded to his Razzies on Instagram, saying “box office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.

The studio bosses overseeing Joker 2 and Borderlands have been talking about their respective box office disappointments.

2024 has seen a some big hit movies on the big screen, but also some sizeable swings that didn’t quite pay off. In Warner Bros’ corner, there’s the recent Joker sequel, Joker: Folie A Deux. For Lionsgate meanwhile, it uncharacteristically pumped over $100m into the videogame adaptation Borderlands.

It would be fair to say that neither struck box office gold.

We’re in the part of the financial cycle where bosses do earnings calls to talk through their more recent performance. Warner Bros Discovery boss and movie deleter David Zaslav was up first, in a widely-reported chat where he’s hoped that the results of the US election help allow big businesses to consolidate more.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer was frank about the poor results of his studio at the box office recently, most notably “Borderlands,” which has shaped up to be one of the year’s biggest critical and commercial busts and led to the studio’s motion picture division generating a mere $2.6 million in profit for the quarter.

“Nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said on an earnings call on Thursday.

Produced on a $120 million budget that was co-financed by Lionsgate with Avi Arad Productions, Picturestart, and 2K Games, “Borderlands” is an adaptation of the hit video game series of the same name and featured an ensemble cast that includes Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Borderlands was a genuine bomb. No doubt about it. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. During a recent earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer spoke about the epic failure of Borderlands.

“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said. With a budget of around $120 million, Borderlands stands to lose the studio a lot of money. Lionsgate’s Motion Picture segment saw revenue nose up 3% to $40 million last quarter on more theatrical wide releases, but profit fell to $2.8 million as those movies underperformed, especially Borderlands.

The first feature film from Abel Tesfaye — Aka The Weeknd — has secured distribution and unveiled its title.

The film from director and writer Trey Edward Shults (“Waves”) is called “Hurry Up Tomorrow” and will be released in theaters by Lionsgate. The studio announced on Monday that it secured worldwide theatrical distribution rights for the film, though no release date has been announced yet.

“Hurry Up Tomorrow” is described as a suspenseful, psychological thriller and a musical opus, designed as an extension of The Weeknd’s next album of the same name (that too is awaiting a formal release date). The album will be a companion piece to the film’s actual score, which was composed by Tesfaye and Daniel Lopatin.

The film stars Tesfaye alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan and melds genres alongside its soundscapes. No synopsis was released.

Shults wrote and directed the film and is also an executive producer on the project.

Bill Skarsgård is one of the most popular actors in the industry. The Swedish actor is best known for his portrayal of Pennywise in the movies It and It Chapter Two. Skarsgård has also been making a lot of headlines recently after the first look pictures of his character Eric Draven from his upcoming supernatural movie, The Crow were released.

Popularly known for portraying Pennywise in the horror film franchise It, Bill Skarsgård is set to star in the remake of the 1994 supernatural superhero film The Crow. According to Variety, British actor Jacob Scipio will reprise the role of the well-received Armando Aretas character, the estranged son of Will Smith's Miami-Dade police detective Mike Lowery. Victims, aren’t we all? Well, Eric Draven is at least, and we’re not talking about his Devil’s Night death. When the first look at Bill Skarsgård’s version of the character arrived earlier this week, the reception was poor to say the least. One peek at this new Eric Draven and pretty much one thing came to everybody’s mind: Jared Leto as The Joker. Complete with a tattoo above the eyebrow and one that even let his left nipple stand in for an eyeball, the look has been widely blasted by fans and even those directly linked to the 1994 cult favorite. Now, someone tied very closely to Leto’s Joker, David Ayer, has chimed in…although his dig is a little more subtle than most.
