Not too long ago, I did a JoBlo Originals video on the 1994 Jeff Bridges/Tommy Lee Jones action flick Blown Away. In it, I mentioned that the movie had just been re-released by Kino Lorber on 4K Uhd—a cause for celebration. Or so I thought. While the movie is largely intact, two minor soundtrack substitutions have apparently been made, which you can read about here.
The movie relies heavily on the music of U2, and luckily those songs are intact. However, two other soundtrack cuts—Here’s Where the Story Ends by The Sundays and All Night Long by Aretha Franklin—have been replaced. In the case of Here’s Where the Story Ends, the replacement is a cover version you might not notice right away. The Aretha song, however, has been swapped out for some generic jazz, and they even removed Aretha’s name from a piece of...

Loni Anderson, who played the savvy, high-heeled receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on “Wkrp in Cincinnati,” died on Sunday, according to AP. She was 79.
Anderson died at a hospital in Los Angeles after a battle with a “prolonged” illness, according to her publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,” Anderson’s family told AP in a statement.
Airing four seasons from 1978 to 1982, “Wkrp in Cincinnati” followed a has-been Ohio radio station attempting a desperate image change by swapping their typical fare of low-impact jams to chart-topping rock and roll. Anderson starred as Jennifer Marlowe, Wkrp’s empowered, quick-witted receptionist. Known for using her womanly charms to dismiss her boss, Mr. Carlson, she often served as a reliable anchor for the station, getting things done despite her incompetent co-workers. She earned two Emmy nods and three Golden Globe nominations for the role.

The Story: A mad Ira bomber (Tommy Lee Jones) escapes prison and travels to Boston, where he stalks his former protégé (Jeff Bridges) who now has a new identity and is a member of the police bomb squad.
The Players: Director: Stephen Hopkins. Writers: John Rice, Joe Batteer, and Jay Roach. Starring: Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Forest Whitaker, and Suzy Amis (Titanic). Score by Alan Silverstri (The Avengers).
The History: Blown Away was supposed to be the sleeper hit of 1994. It had all the ingredients. Tommy Lee Jones had just won the Oscar for playing U.S Marshal Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive, and this would be his first full-on bad guy part since Under Siege, which was an unlikely megahit towards the end of 1992. It also had Jeff Bridges in full-on action hero mode for the first time in his career. While Bridges is now regarded as a beloved character actor,...

Before my screening of "Locked," director David Yarovesky made a surprise appearance to thank the press and the special guests in attendance, as this would be his first time watching the movie with a crowd outside of friends and colleagues. "When I started making this movie, I cannot tell you how many people said 'Oh cool, that's totally a streaming movie,' [...] so it's surreal because when you walk into an AMC and see it up on the screen like this, you don't know that it's a tiny indie movie." And he's right. "Locked" is the type of indie thriller that used to be a movie theater's bread and butter — low-budget/high-return seat-fillers like Kurt Russell's "Breakdown" or the Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones vehicle, "Blown Away" — that are now immediately dumped onto a streamer and lost to the void of algorithms. It's said often in the wake...

Those who watched the History Channel series in the early seasons but then skipped to season 8 or later may be wondering, "Why did Wil Willis leave Forged in Fire?" Forged in Fire is a reality competition show in the vein of Netflix's Blown Away. The History Channel series takes four bladesmiths and has them compete against one another to see who can craft the best-bladed weapon. The show premiered in June 2015 and has been ongoing, lasting longer than similar "craft" reality shows thanks to its unique conceit and compelling personalities.
Forged in Fire has even spawned a popular meme, it's become so influential. One of the key components of the series is the host, Wil Willis. Willis is a former Army Ranger and a decorated Air Force para-rescue specialist with an affinity for weapons, particularly those used in medieval times. When Cyle Zezo left The CW last year after a decade working in unscripted, he knew he didn’t want to leave the world of reality TV behind. (He segued to a new role as executive producer, on such shows as Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Mysteries Decoded.) But he also wanted to serve his original passion for green causes. “My first job out of high school was going door-to-door for the environment,” says Zezo. “This has been important to me for my entire adult life.” So he created a new job, at the crossroads of both fields.
Climate representation — the inclusion of environmental issues in storylines — had until then largely been a focus of scripted entertainment. In 2023, Zezo formed Reality of Change, which aims both to reflect climate concerns in reality shows and to promote sustainability efforts behind the scenes. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! Exclusive: Michael MacMillan retired from the world of television 17 years ago. Except, he didn’t.
The Canadian film and TV producer and business exec had made his name as CEO and Chairman of Alliance Atlantis, the company that built the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise into a worldwide phenomenon, before its broadcast unit was sold off in 2007 to Canwest Communications and Goldman Sachs — making a lot of cash and taking a well-earned early retirement.
However, just four years later, he was back to do it all again.
MacMillan launched Blue Ant Media in 2011, originally as a Canadian channel operator, much the same as Alliance Atlantis had operated. However, just like his previous company, network ownership was only a means to an end — owning content was always the real play.

Last week on “The Voice,” Team John Legend took the stage during the playoffs as all six contestants performed for a shot at making it into the live shows. In the end, three of John’s artists advanced to the next round: Mac Royals, Lila Forde and Azán. That meant the other three singers — Kristen Brown, Kaylee Shimizu and Taylor Deneen — were all eliminated.
Gold Derby asked “The Voice” fans to vote in our poll for which of these three was most robbed, and the results are overwhelmingly strong for Kaylee. She scored a whopping 82% of the vote, compared to just 10% for Kristen and 8% for Taylor. Do You agree or disagree with those poll results? Be sure to sound off down in the comments section.

Exclusive: The shape of Blue Ant Media’s combined studios and rights business is coming together.
Following the Canada’s Drag Race producer’s acquisition of Canadian compatriot MarbleMedia in August, the as-yet-unnamed production and distribution business has set out its leadership teams under Co-Presidents Mark Bishop and Matthew Hornburg, we can reveal.
Bishop and Hornburg previously led MarbleMedia, which has production and sales operations in Canada and the UK. Merging their business with Michael MacMillan’s Blue Ant has created Canada’s latest major content business, the name of which will soon be unveiled.
Here’s a rundown of the new structure: Hornburg’s unscripted development will see Jennifer Harkness taking the factual entertainment development reins from Blue Ant’s LA office. Over in Toronto, Kelsey Espensen (Best in Miniature) will lead unscripted entertainment and Steve Gamester (Inside the Statue Wars) heads specialist factual development.

Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer at Disney Animation, confirmed this afternoon that work has quietly begun on a third edition in the company’s Frozen film franchise during a keynote session at the London Film Festival (Lff).
Lee — who was a writer and director on the first two Frozen films — was tightlipped about any specific details regarding the threequel, including timeframes and production status, but told the Lff audience that she is “blown away” by the work the studio already has in the can.
“All I’ll say is that last week, they carved out time for me to work with the creative team on it. And I’m blown away,” Lee said. “I’m so excited. I don’t know what I’m doing on it yet. I might be doing nothing.”

“A lot of very impressive people have led this festival and what connects them is a love for movies and culture and what that can achieve,” Kristy Matheson told Deadline of her new job as Director of the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival.
“That has left a great stamp on this festival, and this is something I hope to continue.”
Matheson has her first go at navigating that legacy next week as the London Film Festival (Lff) opens with the International Premiere of Emerald Fennell’s sophomore feature Saltburn, starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, and Rosamund Pike.
Running October 4-15, Lff will feature 29 World Premieres, seven International Premieres, and 30 European Premieres. Eye-grabbing debuts set for London include Jeymes Samuel’s The Book of Clarence, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Lakeith Stanfield, and David Oyelowo, and The Kitchen by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya, which closes the festival.

“The Voice” just can’t quit Blake Shelton.
Four months after leaving NBC’s reality TV show, the country coach’s shadow still looms large as it aired its Season 24 premiere on Monday, September 25. Blake was mentioned a whopping 16 times during the two-hour opener, with current coaches John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire seemingly feeling “Lonely Tonight” because the “God’s Country” singer isn’t still buzzing around the set like a “Honey Bee.”
Blake’s first shout-out came at the two-minute mark, when host Carson Daly presented the newest coach with a big pair of scissors so she could cut through the red ribbon on her chair. “Reba, here are your giant scissors for your chair. It’s been cleaned since Blake sat in it, don’t worry,” Carson said. As Reba sliced through the ribbon, Gwen (aka Blake’s wife) exclaimed, “Oh my God, I’m gonna cry!

Monday marked the dawning of a new era in Voice history — not just the Season 24 premiere but the first episode ever without Goat Blake Shelton on deck. Director Antoine Fuqua is teasing Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic he is set to work on and says he’s “blown” away by the “uncanny” resemblance between the lead star and his real-life uncle, the King of Pop.
Jaafar Jackson, who is the son of Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson, will play the iconic singer in the Lionsgate biopic.
“It’s uncanny how much he’s like Michael,” Fuqua told EW in a recent interview. “Sounds like him, dances like him, sings. It’s really uncanny. Graham King, who is a fantastic producer, found him, and introduced him to me, and I was blown away.”
Although the film is on hold due to the writers and actors strike, Fuqua said the biopic will retell Michael’s story “as we know it” and would tackle some of the controversies the singer was involved in during his lifetime.

A new heavyweight is about to make a splash in the unscripted ring.
Canadian production-distribution powerhouse Blue Ant Media, the producers of “Canada’s Drag Race,” has acquired “Blown Away” outfit MarbleMedia — a deal that merges two of Canada’s most global-facing industry players.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

DC Studios reportedly had no reservations about casting David Corenswet in Superman: Legacy despite the actor's resemblance to Man of Steel's Henry Cavill.
According to Above the Line, inside sources claimed that while there were some concerns that Corenswet looked too similar to Cavill, DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn had no problems with the resemblance. Cavill previously starred as Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Extended Universe, first appearing as the hero in 2013's Man of Steel. Corenswet will take over the role in DC Studios' upcoming Superman: Legacy.

Adult Swim has released the anime-inspired intro for its upcoming DC animated series, My Adventures with Superman.
The 30-second intro begins with Superman flying through the air and breaking the fourth wall to wink at the audience. The intro then introduces Superman's civilian identity, Clark Kent, as well as the show's two other leads -- Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen -- and an assortment of villains the trio will presumably face across the first season. My Adventures with Superman is developed by Jake Wyatt and produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios. The hotly-anticipated animated series is currently scheduled to debut on Adult Swim on July 6.

Actor Russell Crowe recently recalled wild reactions from the audience to Gladiator's climactic fight scene. Directed by Blade Runner's Ridley Scott, the blockbuster sword-and-sandal epic followed Hispano-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe) in 180 Ad after he was betrayed by newly-ascended Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Left dying at his home after burying his wife and son, he is sold into slavery, only to fight his way back to Rome to confront Commodus as a gladiator.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Crowe remembers wild audience reactions to his fight with Commodus in Gladiator. "Blown away" by the theatrical experience, Crowe recalls the emotional connection people had with the movie, reminding him of going to the cinema as a child. As the film reached the climactic fight between Maximus and Commodus with the former general nearly killed, the actor admits he was floored by the crowd's visceral response. Read what Crowe said...

The Irish accent is consistently voted one of the most attractive in the world, yet even some of the world’s finest actors have trouble with it. Leonardo DiCaprio tried, as did Julia Roberts (twice), and dare we even mention Brad Pitt?
Today (17 March) marks St Patrick’s Day, and if you have no pub and/or beer plans, why not experience the next best thing: reminiscing about the wonkiest Irish accents in film history.
Relatively new to this great lineage of bad accents is Wild Mountain Thyme, a romantic drama released in the UK in early 2021 and so inexplicable that even literal Irish actors seemed to speak with fake Irish accents in it.
Such is the evil power of this particular bit of fakery, though – Hollywood’s bastardised visions of Ireland so all-encompassing and destructive that few can survive it.
