The very talented filmmaker Raj Kumar Santoshi is still flabbergasted by the continued popularity of his comedy Andaz Apna Apna. “Its reach, appeal, and impact have been beyond anything I ever expected. I still remember when the producer Vinay Sinha had come to me with the idea of doing a film with Aamir Khan. Vinayji convinced me to do a film with him through my stomach. I remember he had brought the most delicious khana for me. He suggested we do something different with Aamir. I had just done two back-to-back serious films, Ghayal and Damini. We decided, why not a comedy? Little did we know that Aaa would turn out to be such a laugh riot during shooting and after release.

If variety is the spice of life then this week offers a veritable feast for moviegoers. Two of the films on release have acquired added curiosity value due to circumstances totally beyond the control of the products and its producers.
The Anant Mahadev-directed biopic Phule, based on the reformist zeal of Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitribai, has been in the news for its references to the caste system. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s recent unsavoury comments on the Brahmin community has brought the film a spot of notoriety which it can ill afford.
Says director Anant Mahadevan, “I don’t think any film gains an audience through this kind of publicity. Phule will find its own audience regardless of the controversies.”
On the other hand, Excel Entertainment’s Ground Zero, directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar, which is located in Kashmir and tackles terrorism, has suddenly acquired a renewed relevance...

Last night, I came back from my private screening of Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Andaz Apna Apna. The chuckles never stop. They never did. Over the years, this tour de ‘farce’ has made a place among moviegoers as The go-to movie whenever the blues bellow to get their dues.
There is nothing even remotely logical or sensible about the farcical antics of Amar (Aamir Khan) and Prem (Salman Khan) as they negotiate their way through a screenplay that is more of a screenplay. Not a soul in the audience would imagine for even a second that the actors were given a hardbound script. The improvisational spirit is so high that the narration often feels like a bridge doddering toward an impending collapse. The shakedown never happens, even though we feel the characters are going too far with their antics.
More amusing than anything that the two Khans do on screen...
