Adult Swim Almost Made A TV Show Based On DC's Most Underrated Characters
Image
Few comic book readers might know about Jack Kirby's "Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth." The "Kamandi" property was created by Kirby (the comic book legend behind "Eternals") in 1972 and fell in line with the then-rising trend of post-apocalyptic stories like "Planet of the Apes," "I Am Legend," and the 1978 film version of "The Time Machine." The apocalypse was looming large, and pop culture tapped eagerly into those impulses to imagine distant sci-fi worlds where anything could happen.

Kirby's entrance into this genre fast-forwarded to a point in the far-flung future after Earth had been devastated by an unknown cataclysm. The planet has since been renamed Earth A.D. (After Disaster), and most of humanity had devolved into violent savagery. Some people were keeping civilization alive in underground bunkers, although they had to hide from multiple new species of anthropomorphic animal monsters. Indeed, animals had rapidly evolved thanks to...

10 Worst Adult Swim Shows Of All Time
Image
In 2001, something strange happened to Cartoon Network. When the night came, cartoons for children ended and a new crop of animated series aimed at adults took over. The kiddie pool had gone to bed, and it was time for Adult Swim.

The programming block began with an eclectic mix of absurdist shows, like "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" and "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law," which continue to be some of the best Adult Swim shows ever. It may throw in a live-action series like "The Eric Andre Show" once in a while, but most importantly, Adult Swim remains one of the few places still making dangerous TV. It's not afraid to take some big swings, and while that can lead to a bonafide hit that wiggles out of the underground into the mainstream, not every offering turns out to be a success.

It's hard coming up with a list of...

With the recent passing of the beloved voice actor, many have been forced to face their mortality and grieve someone who affected so many lives. With this, one cannot help but look back at his life and what shaped him into the icon that he is today.

It would seem that his origin story might have been somewhat similar to those who adored him.

Adult Swim Fans Remember George Lowe’s Live-Action Acts of Awesomeness
Image
George Lowe may have left this mortal world, but the tales of Space Ghost’s adventures are immortal. After all, the superhero himself has been dead since before we were born.

Yesterday morning, the Adult Swim community learned the solemn news that Lowe, 67, the founding voice of adult animated comedy on Cartoon Network, had passed away following a long illness. Lowe’s performance as the titular character on the animated, surrealist, scripted talk show Space Ghost Coast to Coast changed the course of TV history and has brought joy to bizarro cartoon fans for over three decades, but it was Lowe’s in-real-life commitment to the Space Ghost character and his warm embrace of the Space Ghost community that made him a living yet always-dead legend to his friends, fans and contemporaries.

As the animation world mourns one of its most important and influential voices, those who were lucky enough...

George Lowe, the Famous Voice of 'Space Ghost,' Has Passed Away
Image
George Lowe, the voice behind the famous character Space Ghost, passed away on Mar. 2 at the age of 67, and was confirmed by his representative to Deadline. His career spanned several decades, and he has lent his voice to many movies and TV shows. But he will be remembered most for voicing Sg on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, a memorable and hilarious talk show featuring real-life actors, musicians, and others.

The voice actor and comedian was born in Dunedin, Florida, got his start at a radio station when he was only 15. Lowe later did a variety of voiceover work for Cartoon Network and Twbs in the 1980s and early 90s. But his big break came when he was cast as Space Ghost in 1994 for Cartoon Network's then-new animated and live-action talk show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which was created by Mike Lazzo, who went on to co-found Adult Swim.

Rest in Peace to ‘Space Ghost’ Actor George Lowe, the Greatest Voice in Adult Swim History
Image
Earlier today, the adult animation community learned of the passing of voice acting legend George Lowe at the age of 67. There’s now a Space Ghost-sized hole in the heart of every cartoon fan who understands why we even have an Adult Swim in the first place.

Before Cartoon Network committed to courting the market of adults and teenagers who also enjoyed animated comedy shows about zany, supernatural characters with the now-institutional programming block Adult Swim, the channel tested the waters on mature-ish cartoons by having legendary TV executive Mike Lazzo make a subversive, surrealist talk show hosted by a lesser-known Hanna-Barbera character. Space Ghost Coast to Coast first hit the airwaves in 1994 and introduced a massive, yet-untapped audience of men in their 20s who love cartoons and cannabis to the superhero-turned-late-night-host who would change the course of TV history forever.

The late Lowe played the title character in...

Only One Channel Is Still Making TV That Actually Feels Dangerous
Image
There are a few places where it feels like whatever you're watching is being broadcast directly from an alternate universe — roadside motel televisions, public access channels from towns you've never been to, and Adult Swim after midnight. It's a feeling that anyone who has fallen asleep in the middle of watching "Robot Chicken" only to be startled awake and greeted by the hypnotic surrealism of a show like "Infomercials" knows intimately: where what stares back at you from the TV screen is so bizarre and phantasmagorical that you can't help but answer its call like a sailor drawn to a rock by a siren.

The average viewer likely thinks of Adult Swim as the network behind "Rick and Morty," syndicated reruns of their favorite adult animated series, and culture-shaping oddities like "Space Ghost Coast to Coast," but the real freaks and sickos know that Adult Swim is also the home...

Space Ghost Writer Shares Perfect Fan-Cast for a Live-Action Feature Film

Acclaimed Space Ghost writer David Pepose shares his pitch perfect fan cast for a potential feature film based on the franchise.

Responding to a fan question on X, Pepose quite simply stated that Mad Men star Jon Hamm would be his preferred choice for a live-action Space Ghost. Pepose also gave a thumbs up to the suggestion of Reacher star Alan Ritchson playing the part, while he stated that Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin would be a perfect fit for Space Ghost's malevolent, interdimensional variant, the Space Spectre.

The Longest-Running Cartoon Series, Ranked
Image
Animation has been around since 1907, with animated sitcoms gaining popularity during the 1960s thanks to shows such as The Flinstones and The Jetsons. Exploring many genres and animation styles, every animated show has a certain factor that makes audiences love it — and, over the years, fans keep coming back.

It's hard to compare one animated series to another, but their writing styles, characters, and world-building set them apart, garnering acclaim in their own rights. While the majority of shows run an average course of two to six seasons, many long-running animated series, including Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, and Pokémon, have transformed into decades-long franchises expanding beyond the world of TV.

Updated on December 27, 2024, by Robert Vaux: With animated shows ranging from educational programs for children, such as Dora the Explorer, to irreverent comedies aimed at adults, such as South Park, it is no surprise that there is something for everyone. We...

Adult Swim Icons Come to Life With New Funko Pops From 'Robot Chicken,' 'Dragon Ball,' and More
Image
Funko is serving up some nostalgia for Adult Swim fans with its latest line of figures. The late 1990s into the 2000s were a great time for the Cartoon Network block with the introduction of classic shows like Robot Chicken and Space Ghost Coast to Coast that would define the brand while Toonami introduced some of Japan's best anime series like Dragon Ball and Voltron. All four are now set to receive new collectibles as part of a new set alongside a Cartoon Network favorite that would eventually become part of the Adult Swim family - Samurai Jack. Chicken, Space Ghost, Goku, Voltron, and Mad Jack are now available to pre-order from Entertainment Earth or Amazon and are estimated to arrive in January.

10 Best Animated Sci-Fi Comedy TV Shows
Image
Animation has always been a great medium to explore the boundless potential of sci-fi stories, and there are plenty of comedy shows which seize the freedom of animation. Animation and sci-fi go hand-in-hand, since both are interested in that which can't be ordinarily depicted using Earthly means. Animated sci-fi comedies have the opportunity of using the entire universe as their setting.

Ever since The Jetsons premiered in the 1960s, there have been animated sci-fi comedies, although most of these were targeted toward children. The arrival of Futurama in 1999 was a massive game-changer. After The Simpsons ushered in a new dawn for adult-oriented animated comedy, Futurama set the tone for sci-fi comedies. Since then, the 21st century has seen a boom in animated sci-fi comedies, with new classics such as Rick and Morty pushing the genre forward.

How Cartoon Network's Space Ghost Coast To Coast Made History
Image
To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."

In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).

Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

Why Cartoon Network Canceled Toonami In 2008, According To Its Creators
Image
"Toonami" debuted on the Cartoon Network in 1997, back when the network was just hitting its stride. Cartoon Network debuted in 1992, and originally offered mostly old animated reruns. It was, for years, the best place to find old Droopy cartoons, as well as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry cartoons, old DC superhero fare, and reruns of Hanna-Barbera trash like "Scooby-Doo" and "The Flintstones."

In 1994, the network had the brilliant idea to repurpose a largely forgotten Hanna-Barbera character named Space Ghost, transforming him into a talk show host. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" set a new dadaist tone for the Cartoon Network, proving that it could make hip, self-aware, original content in addition to its blocks of reruns. In 1996 and 1997, Cartoon Network launched a quartet of new shows -- "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo," "The Powerpuff Girls," and "Cow and Chicken" -- and their reputation was solidified. It was now a destination station.

The Best Adult Swim April Fools’ Moments
Image
Nobody does April Fools’ Day better than Adult Swim. For the past 20 years, the network has made it an annual mission to keep the prankish spirit of the jester-based day alive by throwing its viewers a curveball. Be it absurd gags, silly gimmicks, and sometimes grade-a shocking game-changers, April Fools’ Day is a colossal event for Adult Swim that every adult animation fan can’t miss.

Here are a few of the channel’s best April Fools’ Day moments from the past two decades.

2004 – Mustaches

Let’s go back to the prank that started it all—mustaches! It was just a night of regular adult animated programming, but with mustaches drawn onto all the characters in every scene in every show. It is such a simplistic gag, yet it birthed the tradition.

The Powerpuff Girls Became A Timeless Hit Thanks To Another Cartoon Network Series
Image
Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.

Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

Why Cartoon Network Killed Off The Original Toonami Tom
Image
Created by Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco, Toonami is a late-night programming block that helped introduce Japanese animated series to audiences in the West. First launched in 1997 on Cartoon Network, the block continues to this day on Adult Swim and is responsible for expanding the animated palate of multiple generations, myself included. Originally, Toonami was hosted by Moltar, a former supervillain from the 1966 animated series "Space Ghost" (not to be confused with "Space Ghost Coast to Coast"), but was replaced three years later by Tom (short for Toonami Operations Module). Tom wasn't just a host; he also came with his own lore and storyline from episode to episode, similar to the way the robots on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" also have backstories and character arcs.

Tom was a way to usher in a new era of Toonami, kicking off his transmission with an episode of "Sailor Moon R." Fans loved Tom,...

Two Great Animated Shows Just Dropped New Seasons On Max – But WB's Marketing Sure Didn't Let You Know
Image
(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: season 3 of "Clone High" and "Jellystone!")

Animation fans (and fans of good movies regardless of style) have been thrust into an emotional tornado spinning as wildly as the Tasmanian Devil regarding the release of director Dave Green ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows") and writer Samy Burch's ("May December") live-action/animated hybrid Looney Tunes courtroom flick, "Coyote vs. Acme." What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.

Of course, you realize, this means war.

Every Original Cartoon Network Show Of The 90s, Ranked
Image
Cartoon Network revolutionized the world of animation with its 24/7 cartoon broadcasts, starting with re-runs of classics like The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo. Original Cartoon Network shows from the '90s, like Johnny Bravo and Courage the Cowardly Dog, continue to have a strong following and are considered iconic. The Powerpuff Girls, with its fierce action, stylish animation, and hidden adult jokes, is considered the best original Cartoon Network show of the '90s, winning multiple awards and leaving a lasting cultural legacy.

The original '90s Cartoon Network shows made for a golden era for the animation powerhouse. In 1991, Ted Turner bought Hanna-Barbera Productions for $320 million. Desiring a channel to broadcast Hanna-Barbera's extensive library of cartoons, he launched the Cartoon Network channel in 1992 — the first in history to play cartoons 24/7. Initially, these programs were re-runs of classics like The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, and Jonny Quest. As the channel grew,...

Could Adult Swim Expand to 24 Hours?
Image
Adult Swim has been gradually taking up more airtime on Cartoon Network, with recent events suggesting that it may eventually dominate the entire day's schedule. Adult Swim's success with older demographics and its recent increase in ratings have positioned it as a key player for Warner Bros. Discovery, which is looking to target the older generation to combat the decline of cable TV. Cartoon Network's relevance is at risk, as linear ratings continue to decline and original series migrate to streaming platforms. With Adult Swim dominating 13 hours of the day, Cartoon Network's future is uncertain.

Those of us who grew up in the 2000s hold Cartoon Network in a special place in our hearts. Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, The Powerpuff Girls, and Ed Edd n Eddy were just some of the titles that defined the decade for the network. When the day was over,...

For those who may be unfamiliar with Wrapped Up, can you tell our readers how you two first came together and started working on this comic book?

DC's Super Friends Removed From Max Amid Content Purge

Super Friends, the famous Hanna-Barbera cartoon based on DC's Justice League of America, has been removed from Max.

The very first Justice League cartoon disappeared from the streaming service two years after being added to HBO Max on June 18, 2021. Super Friends is the latest of many shows to get cut from Max/HBO Max ever since Warner Bros. Discovery began shrinking the platform's content library in late 2022. It is unknown whether Super Friends or other cut Max content will move to another streaming service at this time. Other DC cartoons, like Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited, remain available to stream on Max.

Today's the big day for HBO Max which officially dropped the HBO to complete its rebrand to Max. Sadly, that change didn't come without casualties. HBO Max Cuts Metalocalypse Despite a New Film, Live Tour & Album Plans
Image
A new standard headline that fans have been dealing with lately has been streaming services announcing that they are cutting more titles from their services, and Sunday saw the removal of the classic Adult Swim series, Metalocalypse, from HBO Max. However, what makes this movie extra shocking is that Metalocalypse is in the middle of a series of high profile projects, including a live concert tour, an album and, most importantly, a feature film!

Warner Discover announced earlier this month that it was pulling a number of animated titles from HBO Max (soon to be just Max on May 23), including Clarence, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Flapjack, Foster's Home, Dexter's Laboratory, Ben 10: Omniverse, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, and Ben 10: Alien Force. Likely the strangest show to be pulled, though, was Metalocalypse.

Judy Tenuta, Accordion-Playing Comedian, Dies at 72
Judy Tenuta
Judy Tenuta, the quirky comedian known for playing the accordion and for her colorful characters, died Thursday at her home in Studio City, California, of ovarian cancer, according to her publicist. She was 72.

She had been battling stage 4 ovarian cancer as she detailed in her video “Judy Tenuta Kicks Cancer’s Ass,” which was shot at her home during the pandemic.

Tenuta was born on Nov. 7, 1949, in Oak Park, Illinois, where she grew up in a staunchly Irish Catholic neighborhood. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she majored in theater. Her interest in comedy took hold when she took an improv comedy class with the famed Chicago group The Second City, and she began opening for other comedians.

Her mother, a fan of Lawrence Welk, encouraged her to learn to play the accordion and Tenuta began incorporating it into her act. The accordion is currently on display...

How HBO Max Is Recreating The Problem Cartoon Network Was Created To Solve
Image
HBO Max and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav can't seem to keep their names out of the headlines recently, tied exclusively to baffling business decisions like canning the highly-anticipated release of "Batgirl" or absolutely obliterating the streaming platform's animated offerings. Zaslav made it known during the Q2 earnings call that he had hoped to cut 3 billion from HBO Max's operating budget before the inevitable streaming merger with discovery+, which apparently meant annihilating the relationships HBO Max had with Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network.

Learning that your life's work is being wiped out with complete disregard for the artistry or the lives of those that crafted it is difficult enough, but as "Infinity Train" creator Owen Dennis shared, Zaslav and the Discovery team couldn't even have the common courtesy to inform the creators of their decision to throw away their years of work like expired takeout. As Twitter user @sapphyreblayze rightfully pointed out,...

Le Fantôme de l'espace (1966)
Adult Swim: The First 13 Shows To Air On Cartoon Network’s Late-Night Program Block
Le Fantôme de l'espace (1966)
Since children often go to sleep on the earlier side, channels targeting them needed to find something else to air late at night. Nickelodeon had Nick at Nite and Disney had Vault Disney which aired both adult content and vintage programming. In 2001, competing children’s channel, Cartoon Network, decided to enter into the late-night programming game with Adult Swim, which kicked-off each night saying “All kids out of the pool”. However, unlike its competitors, Adult Swim aired mostly original shows and like its home-network, only offered animated series. Many of their shows were parodies based on the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Space Ghost including Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Brak Show, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, all of which are currently available for streaming on HBOMax.

Ted Turner
Every Original Cartoon Network Show Of The 90s, Ranked (According To IMDb)
Ted Turner
In 1991, Ted Turner bought Hanna-Barbera Productions for $320 million. Desiring a channel to broadcast Hanna-Barbera's extensive library of cartoons, he and his team developed and launched Cartoon Network by 1992. The channel was the first in history to play cartoons 24/7. Initially, these programs were re-runs of classics like The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and Jonny Quest. As the channel grew, they'd add new programming that helped shape the image of the channel.

‘The Midnight Gospel’: Netflix’s Animated Series ‘Approaches Life and Death with Some Calmness’
Image
With “The Midnight Gospel,” Pendleton Ward left “Adventure Time” far behind, while Duncan Trussell found new meaning in repurposing his funny, philosophical podcast interviews. Together, they pushed the boundaries of animation at Netflix with their trippy and darkly comic journey through a simulated multiverse undergoing apocalyptic meltdowns. And the fact that the series dropped during the pandemic lockdown makes it seem all the more relevant and therapeutic.

“The pandemic is surreal on its own. I hope the show is enjoyable as a distraction right now,” said Ward, who enjoyed the freeform structure. “That’s my favorite way to work now…to provide a comedy/visual aesthetic direction to work under but to break the rules if someone has a cool idea. Making art exciting and not just a grind!”

Ok K.O.! Nearly Teamed Up With Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Shamus Kelley Aug 7, 2019

Ok K.O.! has had its share of amazing team-ups and one with Space Ghost Coast to Coast was set to happen.

Ok K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes is the king of cartoon team-ups. Ko and his friends have met Captain Planet, Ghoul School, the entire Cartoon Network line-up ever, and most recently Sonic the Hedgehog. The cartoonyiest cartoon on TV almost added another classic series to its team-up roster. Everyone’s favorite parody talk show that was a staple of Cartoon Network throughout the '90s and 2000s, Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

Ok K.O.! creator Ian Jones-Quartey revealed that they had been working on a team up between Ok K.O.! and Space Ghost Coast to Coast for quite some time.

“We had a really good story,” explains Quartey but, “we really, really wanted the Coast to Coast cast in it.”

Sadly, C. Martin Croker,...

Critics Pick the Most Underrated TV Superheroes — IndieWire Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

This week’s question: Who is an underrated TV superhero that deserves more respect/attention? (Old and current shows are fair game.)

Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider

This is tough because my outlet puts a premium on superheroes, so really none are overlooked as far as we’re concerned. However, I haven’t seen as much general love for “Black Lightning” as the show deserves. Maybe people are burned out by the deluge of Dctv, much of which is past its prime, though others are exceptionally innovative and increasingly great (“Legends of Tomorrow”). But “Black Lightning” provides something that we aren’t seeing elsewhere in superhero series. For one thing, Black Lightning himself, Jefferson Pierce, is older than all the current supers on TV — the show starts with him coming out of retirement,...
