Claire Danes (Homeland) is re-teaming with her My So-Called Life creator and producer for a new HBO TV series, per Variety. When recently asked why no one has tried to reboot or remake My So-Called Life, Holzman replied:

It’s not a reboot in the traditional sense, but I think Claire Danes and I back together would be a kind of version of that. … It’s a completely different story, but we’re hopeful that we’re gonna work together again.

Whether you watched it or not, every teenager from the 1990s remembers the teen drama series My So-Called Life. Created by Winnie Holzman and starring Claire Danes, the cult favorite drama explored the tribulations of being a teenager and dealing with friends, guys, parents, school, and any unpredictable thing life could throw at you. My So-Called Life helped define a generation, and now Holzman and Danes are reteaming for The Applebaum Curse, a new drama coming to HBO.
In early development, The Applebaum Curse finds Winnie Holzman writing the script and serving as the project’s showrunner. Claire Danes is set to star and joins Holzman as an executive producer. Claire Danes earned a permanent place in many a television viewer's heart back in 1993 when, at the age of 14, she played Angela Chase on "Wicked" screenwriter (and writer of the stage musical's book) Winnie Holzman's short-lived ABC drama "My So-Called Life." It was rare to see a teenage character portrayed by an actor of the same age (Danes was actually a year younger than the 15-year-old Angela), and what a startling difference it made. Danes effortlessly conveyed the terror and elation of being a high school freshman in America, which meant she could go from heartbreakingly sympathetic to downright irritating on the turn of a dime. Such are teenagers. We were all there once.
Some of us also had the opportunity as teenagers to leave the communities in which we were raised and visit other cultures and countries. In retrospect, these were vital experiences that broadened our understanding of...

Once upon a time, about 24 years ago, when Marc Platt (“La La Land”) moved from production president of Universal Pictures to launch his own producing shingle at the studio, he brought with him a movie adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” a prequel to L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and the 1939 Judy Garland musical. Linda Woolverton’s first script was a straight film adaptation; a small part of the mix was the origin story of two witches of Oz, Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West.
A blockbuster movie musical like “Wicked” (Universal) is the sum of years of dedicated labor and deliberate decisions about what to keep from the book or the show, or what to add and change for the movie. Somehow, over two decades, producer...

Family stories have been a television staple for as long as there’s been TV.
They tug at our heartstrings, make us laugh, and remind us that, no matter how chaotic things get, family — whether by blood or by choice — is at the core of the human experience.
But what exactly constitutes “family” has changed dramatically over the years, and television has kept pace, reflecting those shifts in compelling, sometimes groundbreaking ways.
Let’s dive in together and explore how these shows have mirrored our evolving views on what it means to be a family.

Back in the early days of TV, family dramas were practically an extension of a Hallmark card: wholesome, harmonious, and just a little too perfect.
Shows like Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best, and The Brady Bunch painted a picture of the ideal nuclear family.

There's definitely a sweet spot when it comes to how long a TV series should run. Some go on seemingly forever until they're shallow visages of what they used to be. Then, there are the shows that displayed a ton of promise in just a few episodes but got canceled for one reason or another. When it comes to the latter, you know exactly what we're talking about. Perhaps you were even part of a fan campaign to try to bring one of the following shows back on the air. Sadly, the whims of studio executives know no mercy, even when a show ends on a massive cliffhanger that'll no longer get any resolution.
These are the shows that broke all of our hearts. These series canceled after one season managed to get us invested so quickly, and now, we're left to wonder what might've been had more people tuned in initially.

The 1990s was a fantastic decade for pop culture. This was an era of cell phones, portable CD players, VHS rental shops, and, most of all, amazing TV shows that have become classics. These shows ranged from dramas to sitcoms to animated series and even some things in between. They created catchphrases and words that have become part of everyday language. Like the 1980s, these shows have stuck around in syndication, DVD and Blu-Ray, and streaming media services for fans to enjoy anytime.
Now, many of these shows can be rebooted and shown to a fresh pair of eyes with a brand-new audience. The storylines might be continued from where the previous series left off or told all over again with new directions for their beloved characters. From Friends to The Nanny to My So-Called Life to Daria, these shows can be reinvented slightly for a new audience while recapturing...

Before Tom Cruise was driving motorcycles off cliffs, clinging to planes, and fighting bad guys atop moving trains in the name of "Mission: Impossible," the franchise had its humble beginnings in the form of a very '60s CBS series. The original "Mission: Impossible" was a spy series with a rotating cast of characters created by Bruce Gellar, who died in a plane crash just five years after the show ended. Several key cast members have passed away in the years since then, including Peter Graves, Greg Morris, Martin Landau, Steven Hill, and, of course, Leonard Nimoy.
"Mission: Impossible" was a huge success when it aired, winning 10 Emmys throughout its seven-season run and producing 171 episodes. The show inspired an '80s revival series, but "Mission: Impossible" really took off when Cruise (and Brian De Palma) got a hold of the franchise in 1996. During the '90s and 2000s, teen dramas became the bread and butter for TV networks, with massively popular hits like Beverly Hills, 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The O.C., and My So-Called Life taking audiences by storm with their complex characters and captivating storylines. Why Was Natalie Portman Replaced In Leonardo DiCaprio’s Romeo + Juliet? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Prime Video)
In the mid-90s, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet was about to flip Shakespeare’s classic love story with a modern twist. But before Claire Danes became the iconic Juliet, 13-year-old Natalie Portman was up for the role. The same Natalie who’d later crush it in Black Swan and Star Wars. So, what happened? Simple: the age gap between her and Leonardo DiCaprio, aka Romeo, just didn’t vibe.
At the time, Portman was 13, fresh off Léon: The Professional and Heat. Perfect for Juliet, right? She was practically the same age as the character in Shakespeare’s play. But then DiCaprio, cast as Romeo at 21, suddenly things got… weird. Portman herself later admitted, “It was a complicated situation,” and honestly, who could blame her? In the world of television, the best shows don’t just entertain — they spark conversations and push boundaries. It’s not a new thing.
Classics like All in the Family, Maude, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show paved the way by daring to address social issues head-on, tackling topics like sexism, race, and class with unflinching honesty.
Long before today’s open discussions on race, mental health, and LGBTQ+ issues, these series, and others that followed, quietly laid the groundwork for progressive storytelling.

Shows like these shattered stereotypes, broke taboos, and brought real-world issues into America’s living rooms, igniting conversations that continue to shape TV today.
Here’s a look at the trailblazing shows that, in their own way, were ahead of their time.
These shows tackled themes and topics that mainstream TV had long avoided, proving that television could be both thought-provoking and entertaining.

For those about to rock, we rebuke you! The very real nightmare of adolescence collides with a hellacious 40-year-old conspiracy theory in Hysteria!, Peacock‘s chilling dramedy that plays like My-So-Called Life meets the Salem Witch Trials. Set in a Midwestern suburb amid the late-‘80s “Satanic Panic” that had parents convinced hard rock was a force of evil, the chaos kicks off after a high-school football star goes missing. Seizing on the town’s sudden paranoia about cult culture, teen outcast Dylan (Emjay Anthony) and his only pals make a play for popularity by adding a Satanic slant to their struggling heavy metal band. But instead of just drawing a crowd with their pentagrams and songs about the devil, they draw the suspicion of a no-nonsense cop (Bruce Campbell), a zealous church lady (Anna Camp), and Dylan’s freaked-out mom (Julie Bowen) who all begin to fear that the...

In the 1990s, if you were looking for edgy fare on network television, you'd be looking at Law & Order, My So-Called Life, or NYPD Blue. In fact, you'd probably hit Animaniacs or The Magic School Bus before even considering the popular Western drama Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. The series, which ran on CBS for 6 seasons between 1993 and 1998, stars Jane Seymour as the titular Dr. Michaela Quinn, aka "Dr. Mike," a female physician who sets up a practice in the town of Colorado Springs. The series is as squeaky-clean and family-friendly as they come, in the vein of predecessors like The Waltons or Little House on the Prairie. But imagine if Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman was as edgy and dark as, say, Breaking Bad. What would that look like? Well, imagine no more, as Funny or Die pulled the original cast together to picture what such a scenario would look like,...

Certain TV shows have made such a large impact on the medium and pop culture in general that it's surprising to learn they ended after one season. Most of the TV series were canceled prematurely for reasons ranging from low ratings to expensive production costs. However, the indelible marks left by the short-lived series would have most people believing they flourished for many years.
The character relationships and themes addressed in influential series like My So-Called Life and The Honeymooners can be seen in many of the shows that came after them. The former helped change the way teen dramas were made, moving away from storylines that felt disconnected from real teenagers watching at home. Many of the greatest TV shows ever made cultivated lasting legacies and devoted fan bases after having spent years on air, but these TV shows prove the same can be done with one season.

The espionage thriller show, Homeland, received a lot of attention on its premiere in 2011. The unique storyline featured a suspicious CIA officer convinced that a Marine Corps Scout Sniper had turned on the government, and chaos ensued. But the most controversial aspect of the show was the inclusion of a mental illness as the main character’s trait.
Actress Claire Danes played Carrie Mathison, the CIA officer who suffered from bipolar disorder. The character’s illness became a central part of the plot, but it did not define the storyline. The actress also did her research on the disorder to showcase a realistic performance. Danes confessed she was relieved to discover that the sensitive issue was not treated as a gimmick by the show.

One of the most aggravating aspects of becoming invested in a TV show is when networks cancel it too soon. There are many shows that haven’t made it past one season, as they struggle to establish a strong fanbase. For the most part, these cancelled series plummet into the TV wasteland of forgotten shows. But a few live on as cult series, or in the memory of fans still bitter over an early cancellation.
There are several reasons a network cancels a show, but the main one is ratings – especially in the days when the Neilsen ratings determined the fate of a series. Before cable and streaming, the “Big Three” networks of ABC, CBS and NBC fought for viewership, and wouldn’t hesitate to axe a show that didn’t perform well. Unfortunately, some shows like “The Tick” didn’t receive the support they deserved from network executives, either...

TV genres are more like arbitrary guidelines than strict boundaries, but viewers have come to rely on them all the same.
We expect to see cops in police procedurals, doctors in medical shows, and dragons on dragon shows.
But what happens when a TV series jumps its genre guardrails and goes rogue?
(Apple TV+)
This scenario happens more often than you’d think, especially with shows taking a supernatural twist.
It’s so common there’s even a name for it: The Paranormal Trope.
Wait … Did You Hear That??
TV shows often feature a supernatural episode for Halloween, which makes sense.
It’s a time of year when spooky shenanigans can be enjoyed and easily explained away (or just never mentioned again).
(HBO/YouTube screenshot)
A “true” supernatural aspect buried in that holiday’s fake trappings blurs the line between a show’s established reality and how much that reality...

Dr. Hugh Culber brought LGBTQ+ representation to Star Trek, becoming a father figure to queer teens. Culber's resilience and compassion make him a standout character, embodying non-toxic masculinity. Wilson Cruz's portrayal of Culber made a memorable impact, bringing depth and diversity to Star Trek.
On Star Trek: Discovery, Wilson Cruz plays Dr. Hugh Culber, one of the USS Discovery's medical doctors. Unlike earlier Star Trek series, which often focused on a single character as the series' Chief Medical Officer, Star Trek: Discovery season 1 gave equal weight to both Dr. Hugh Culber and Dr. Tracy Pollard (Raven Dauda). At any given moment, either Dr. Culber or Dr. Pollard might be in attendance in Discovery's sick bay. As Star Trek: Discovery went on, Hugh Culber became a standout character, exemplifying physical resilience, emotional wisdom, and ongoing curiosity, with a poignant character arc resolving science and spirituality.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was influenced by Marvel's Kitty Pryde, creating a successful lead character template. X-Men: The Last Stand botched Kitty Pryde's character, receiving poor reviews compared to Buffy's success. Both Buffy and Kitty are young women with supernatural powers, but Buffy explored empowering themes better.
Joss Whedon has confirmed that the biggest influence on Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a beloved comic book character who got botched in her official movie adaptation in 2006. Described as a cross between My So-Called Life and The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer combines the relatable adolescent foibles of a teen drama with the spooky terror of a monster-infested supernatural horror series. It arrived as a totally unique gem in the television landscape, but it took a disparate range of inspirations to bring the show together.

When That 70s Show aired on Fox in the 90s and early 2000s, the buddy sitcom contended with other ensemble series like Boy Meets World, My So-Called Life, and more, but there was something timeless about it. The tight-knit group withstood the test of eight seasons, and in 2023, Netflix brought us all back to Kitty and Red Formans house in Point Place, Wisconsin, as if no time had passed at all. That 90s Show was an ambitious reboot, but it managed to bring a fresh look at a new decade, introduced a new core group, and still satisfied fans of the original series' need for familiar faces. Now, with Season 2 available to stream, Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith Kitty and Red sit down with Colliders Steve Weintraub to talk about why this spin-off series has been such a success.

Zoe Perry isn’t just carrying the torch passed down from her acclaimed actor parents, Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry; she’s igniting her own path in the acting universe. The Chicago-born actress has wowed audiences as Mary Cooper on CBS’ Young Sheldon, replicating the portrayal her mother masterfully delivered in The Big Bang Theory.
And let’s not forget the shared screen with her father on ABC’s Scandal. But did you know that before her rise, Zoe Perry experienced one of those peculiarly ‘down the drain’ moments in an industry known for its highs and lows? The actress was humbled for her “plainness” during an audition, only to have it turn into a moment of levity that highlighted Perry’s sense of humor & grit.

Some television shows we miss the most have only lasted one season.
Many of these series found their way into our hearts because of their emotional heart or their wit.
Some we’ve loved for decades, and others are newer favorites, but the TV Fanatic staff wished that many of these shows had gotten better resolutions or a fairer chance.
There are so many one-season wonders that never received a fair chance.
While we’d love to showcase all of them, here are nine that remain in our hearts.

My So-Called Life (ABC)
When My So-Called Life premiered in 1994, it faced heavy competition. Time slot-wise, it was up against Friends and other great shows of the period.
In terms of similar shows that aired on different days but were aimed at teens, the biggest competition was probably from Beverly Hills 90210.

Hulu may have started out as the redheaded stepchild of the streamers back in Netflix’s heyday, but it has stuck around long enough to have firmly established itself as one of the old standbys. It follows, then, that Hulu would have a veritable fount of LGBTQ content ready to compete with the robust queer catalogues available to subscribers of Netflix, HBO, and other platforms.
A brief perusal of Hulu’s LGBTQ section doesn’t disappoint, but digging in deeper will give you the best chance at a genuinely memorable watch. Right now, the Disney-backed streamer is hosting popular queer television classics, like “The L Word,” “My So-Called Life,” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” alongside fresher fare, including “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and “Killing Eve.” Recent Hulu originals, such as “Love, Victor” and “Shrill,” deserve singling out, if only because you know they’re buzz-worthy and readily available on the service.

About 20 notebooks are socked away in producer-director-writer Edward Zwick’s office in no particular order, full of odd magazine clippings and notes. During the pandemic he rooted through them and rewatched his work, looking for the nuggets and details that would become his memoir “Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood.”
He chronicles a television career with longtime Bedford Falls partner Marshall Herskovitz — together they created “Thirtysomething,” “Once and Again,” and “My So-Called Life” — but much of the book tracks Zwick in the movie business, from Demi Moore and Rob Lowe in “About Last Night” in 1986, “Legends of the Fall” with Brad Pitt in 1994, “The Last Samurai” with Tom Cruise in 2003, “Blood DIamond” with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2006, and his last outing with Cruise, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” in 2016.

Tokyo Vice is back from quite a lengthy hiatus. And despite the nearly two-year gap between seasons — one that saw a full rebrand for streamer Max — things pick up pretty much exactly where they left off.
Series executive producer and director Alan Poul, who helmed the first two episodes, suggests the handling of the pair will probably soften the blow for viewers. “The premiere is like episode nine of season one, a direct continuation,” Poul says of the two-part Feb. 8 premiere. “The second episode is really the start of the new storylines.”
Tokyo Vice has been a bizarre culmination of interests for Poul. The closest comp to Ed Zwick’s new memoir Hits, Flops And Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood is William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade, where he posited a definitive piece of advice on the elusive formula for hit making: “Nobody knows anything.” Although he didn’t create the “if you want to send a message, try Western Union” line that has many authors, Zwick spent a career trying to defy that adage, in directing, writing and producing a long list of great and meaningful films and TV series topped by the Oscar winning Shakespeare in Love and Traffic, to Glory, Blood Diamond, About Last Night, Defiance, The Last Samurai, The Siege, thirtysomething, My So Called Life and many others.
Comparing his book to Goldman sets a high bar. Like the scripter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid did, Zwick might fawn over great actors like Denzel Washington,...

Not all memorable '90s shows are the most nostalgic. Some are memorable for a reason, but there are many series that were b-side series. They capture wonderful elements of the 1990s, from music to clothes to popular character types.
Everyone knows Full House, but so many '90s kids watched shows like My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks but may have forgotten them. Many actors like Jason Segel, Jared Leto, and Claire Danes got their start in these series. They were just the right age to capture their young adult characters' fashion, friendship, humor, and angst.

As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”
“Marshall wrote a provocative pilot for Showtime called “Secret Seventeen” about unruly,...
