William Shatner Breaks Silence on Netflix Reboot of His Greatest Non-Star Trek Franchise
Image
Netflix is rebooting a 43-year-old cop show that is considered to be one of William Shatner’s best non-Star Trekshows. Following news of the revival movie, the legendary actor is revealing his thoughts on the matter.

On Aug. 6, Netflix announced, via Deadline, that it has gained the rights for a new action-comedy movie based on the 1980s police procedural T.J. Hooker, which starred Shatner as well as Heather Locklear. Entertainment Weekly reached out to Shatner regarding his thoughts on the reboot, and a representative for the actor shared his answer via e-mail.

“I know nothing. It would be a lovely idea to resurrect the legendary character, but I have no idea what’s going on,” Shatner said in his response.

The original T.J. Hooker premiered on ABC in 1982 and ran for a total of five seasons and 90 episodes. Shatner, who is best known for playing James. T. Kirk, in the Star Trek franchise,...

Netflix Is Rebooting William Shatner's Greatest Non-Star Trek Franchise 43 Years Later
Image
Netflix has announced its next project, and it’s a take on a 1980s TV series that starred none other than William Shatner. While he may be most well-known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trekfrom 1966 to 1969 and in its subsequent feature films, it’s his cop show that’s being rebooted on the streamer.

According to Deadline, Netflix has gained the rights for a new action comedy movie based on the 1980s police procedural T.J. Hooker, which starred Shatner and Heather Locklear. T.J. Hooker ran from 1982 to 1986 and is regarded as one of Shatner’s greatest shows, aside from Star Trek, of course.

News of the new T.J. Hooker movie comes on the heels of the success of the recently-rebooted The Naked Gun franchise, which, as of Aug. 6, has earned more than $30 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.

Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel are on board to write the T.

William Shatner's 'T.J. Hooker' Is Getting the Reboot Treatment
Image
With The Naked Gun bringing cop comedy back to movie theaters, Netflix has just signed on to produce a lighter look at a classic cop show. T.J. Hooker, William Shatner's 1980s procedural staple, is being rebooted as an action comedy feature. The series was Shatner's first post-Star Trek role that allowed him to break out of the Captain Kirk mold.

The show's cheesiness and straight-laced nature makes it fertile territory for a comedic reboot, akin to the Channing Tatum-Jonah Hill21 Jump Street films. Deadline reports that Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel have been signed to write the film. The duo has an extensive comedy resume that includes Yes Man, Huge in France, and Allen Gregory. They've recently done a number of projects for Netflix: they're currently showrunning Bert Kreischer's series Bert, and wrote the John Cena-Eric André comedy Little Brother. The most relevant item on their...

Image
Exclusive: Hot on the trail of a strong weekend opening of The Naked Gun, the ’80s prime time procedural T.J. Hooker will be next procedural in line for promotion to an action comedy movie. Netflix has collared screen rights to the venerable cop drama, with Jarrad Paul & Andy Mogel tapped to write. The film will be produced by Sophie Cassidy and Matt Crespy for 2.0 Entertainment, Adrian Askarieh for Prime Universe Films, and Alex Westmore for Vali Vista Films.

The original series premiered in March 1982 on ABC and ended its five-season, 91-episode run in 1986, with its final season airing on CBS. The show starred William Shatner as Sgt. T.J. Hooker of the Lcpd, a hard-nosed veteran reeling from a divorce from his wife and the loss of his partner in the line of duty. The hit CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, catapulted its cast, such as Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco, to global fame. However, despite the show’s immense success, it can’t be denied that not everyone embraced its nerdy themes.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
Broadway’s delightful — but wickedly accurate — satire of big business was brought to movie screens almost intact, with the story, the stars, the styles and dances kept as they were in the long-running show that won a Pulitzer Prize. This is the place to see Robert Morse and Michele Lee at their best — it’s one of the best, and least appreciated movie musicals of the 1960s.

Emily Blunt Officially Cast As Mary Poppins In New Sequel
Emily Blunt has officially landed the role of Mary Poppins in a Disney sequel set for release in 2018.

Rumours suggesting 33-year-old British actress was the frontrunner to take on the titular role in the family movie first emerged in February (16), and on Tuesday (May 31), Disney executives officially announced she is their leading lady.

Variety reports Blunt will be joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of Broadway smash Hamilton, and the sequel, entitled Mary Poppins Returns, will hit cinemas on Christmas Day (25Dec18).

'Mary Poppins 2' Wants 'Hamilton' Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda
Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins (1964)
Disney's Mary Poppins sequel is moving forward in the right direction, with Emily Blunt entering talks to play the magical nanny last week. Today, Variety has word that Lin-Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of the hit Broadway sensation Hamilton, has engaged in talks with the studio to play Jack. This character is said to be a lamplighter, who resembles Dick Van Dyke's character Bert from the original Mary Poppins.

This new Mary Poppins project will be set in the 1930s, 20 years after the events of the original movie, in Depression-Era London. The plot follows the adult Michael Banks, who now has children of his own. When his big sister Jane returns to town, after falling on hard times, their beloved Mary Poppins comes back to help. The story will be pulled from author P.L. Travers' eight literary sequels, including the first follow-up Mary Poppins Comes Back, but...

Hamilton Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda in Talks For Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins Sequel
When Hamilton won at the Grammys last week, it only increased my jealousy for anyone who has already seen it in person. The Broadway sensation was created by (and stars) Lin-Manuel Miranda, and even though he's popped up in movies and TV shows before, the success of the musical means that he's poised for breakout stardom. Variety reports that he's one step closer to becoming a household name, since he's in talks to star in Disney's Mary Poppins sequel opposite Emily Blunt.

If the deal goes through, Miranda will play Jack, a lamplighter character similar to Dick Van Dyke's Bert from the original 1964 movie, and he's expected to contribute to the music as well. Here's a quick breakdown of the premise:

The story is set in Depression-era London and revolving around a now-grown Michael Banks, who has children of his own. In tough times, big sister Jane returns and soon after,...

Henry Jackman’s ‘Pixels’ has encouraged Happy Madison’s wish-fulfillment like nothing before
Pixels

Henry Jackman

Varese Sarabande Records

Adam Sandler would do well to listen to “Game On,” which blares over the end credits of his latest movie, Pixels. “This is not a game now, nobody can save you /Spent up all your change and now your turn is done” sings Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden as he pumps up Waka Flock Flame for improbable lyrics about video arcade stuntin’. As a merchandising tie-in, “Game On” mashes up two artists whose one shared interest is the contract they both signed. As a wake up call though, it’s unintentionally prescient, blasting out the very words Sandler has refused to hear for the past decade as his comedy persona has morphed from the underdog with something to prove to the sweatpants-wearing schlub yelling that he’s “still got it.”

Rest assured, Pixels fits right in with Adam Sandler’s string of films designed...

7 Unbelievably Cool Musicians Who Appeared on 'Sesame Street' (Video)
Sesame Street might not be as shmancy as, say, the Meatpacking District circa "Sex and the City," but it has its fair share of hip visitors.

The latest "Sesame Street" music video features the wondrous Janelle Monáe, and it's just what you need on a Friday afternoon. Bert's bumming, Cookie Monster is burning his snacks, Big Bird can't dunk a basketball, and the Two-Headed Monster can't seem to find the beat. It's easy to be discouraged, but just as they're all about to toss in the towel, Monáe appears in a stylin' tuxedo to teach them about "The Power of Yet." It's catchy, groovy, and completely adorable - and the perfect song to go with the 45th anniversary of the long-running show!

Monáe isn't the first musician to visit Sesame Street, and she surely won't be the last. Check out some of the other stand-out appearances from years past,...

Has London 2012 got us all blubbing? I second that emotion
With Danny Boyle's opening ceremony setting the perfect tone, Britons can express patriotism with irony and genuine feeling

Maybe, ultimately, it was the pyjamas. Nobody, surely, has worn pyjamas on an Olympic stadium track before if not by mistake. But there was the deaf choir of children, in pyjamas, signing God Save the Queen. "It was as if someone had said: "If you get into your jimjams and brush your teeth, you can stay up late to sing for the Queen," said my colleague Tim, who was reduced to tears by that moment in Danny Boyle's opening ceremony. That was part of Boyle's crying-time genius: the human touch, the cultivation of empathy, the cunning manipulation of sentiment that any director worth his salt can deploy without – ideally – making us feel that it's phoney.

And so began an unexpected festival of emotion that, by rights, London 2012 had no right...

Watch: Go Game Jumping With The Trailer For Disney's 'Wreck-It-Ralph'
Just this morning we were talking about how movie-like video games have become with Ellen Page leading the upcoming "Beyond: Two Souls," but it hasn't always been like that, and Disney is bringing back the old quarter pumping arcade memories with "Wreck-It-Ralph."

The first trailer for the movie has landed and it's a candy colored delight that will surely make gamers young and old pretty damn excited. The story centers on the title character, voiced by John C. Reilly, who is tired of being the bad guy against the squeaky clean Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer), so he decides to try his hand at being the hero of another game in the arcade. He hops from game to game, trying his hand at heroics, until he unintentionally unleashes a larger threat that could destroy all of the games.

This spot features a lot of great little moments from the support group...

'Kinect: Star Wars' Composers Give Glimpses Into The Creative Process, Plus An Exclusive Stream Of The Soundtrack
Kinect Star Wars Composers Gordy Haab and Kyle Newmaster

Kinect: Star Wars was supposed to take players to a galaxy far, far away in ways unlike any other game. While the overall reviews were mixed, the game definitely had some high points, and some low ones – coincidently, the game's music happened to fall into both categories. While many critics, fans, and Star Wars enthusiasts took a bit of exception to the Dance Central-inspired, Galactic Dance-Off mode, the rest of the game's soundtrack was outstanding. It may have not been composed by the immortal John Williams, but two long-time Star Wars fans and franchise veterans, Gordy Haab and Kyle Newmaster, evoked the essence of the movies, while maintaining the fresh feel of the game. In case you missed out on the epic music from the game, never fear, you can give some of the best tracks a listen here while getting...

Maureen Ryan: High Art: Taking A Trip With 'Mad Men'
Mad Men (2007)
Don't read this unless you've seen "Far Away Places," Sunday's episode of "Mad Men."

I began watching Sunday's episode of "Mad Men" a half-hour after it began airing, and before I logged off Twitter, I saw a few tweets along the lines of "What the hell?"

Then I began watching the episode, and it wasn't long before I was saying, "What the hell?" About 17 minutes in, before we'd fully figured out that the episode was toying with timey-wimey experimentation, my husband muttered, "We're going to meet some weird Europeans in a minute."

The comment was spot-on, given how much this episode reminded me of "Jet Set," which was tonally and structurally a rather odd hour of "Mad Men." It was an hour that, as I recall, inspired a lot of passionate "pro" and "con" chatter.

"Far Away Places" was much, much weirder than "Jet Set," and I'm of mixed minds about it myself.
