Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in Aftersun (2022)
Aftersun Review – Cannes 2022
Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in Aftersun (2022)
British director Charlotte Wells has brought her first feature, Aftersun, to Cannes and has a big hit on her hands. Appearing in the sidebar Critics’ Week section, Aftersun has become one of the most talked about and beloved films of the festival. And rightly so.

Starring Paul Mescal as a young dad Calum and Francesca Corio making an extraordinary debut as his eleven-year-old daughter Sophie, the film is essentially a two-hander. The action takes place during a cheap package holiday in Turkey at some time in the 1990s, although there are also occasional trips to the present.

Calum and Sophie make a great team. There is constant joshing (‘Dad’s 130 and going to be 131 tomorrow’), but the two also watch out for each other, the after sun of the title being diligently applied every evening. There is so much love, too. After a phone call to Sophie’s mum – Calum...

Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in Aftersun (2022)
Aftersun review – beach holiday with Paul Mescal and daughter is a sunny delight
Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal in Aftersun (2022)
This effortlessly relaxed debut by Charlotte Wells is a subtle and complex investigation of post-divorce parenthood, with a brilliant performance by young Francesca Corio

Charlotte Wells makes a rather amazing feature debut in the Critics Week sidebar of Cannes with Aftersun, starring Paul Mescal and nine-year-old newcomer Francesca Corio, about a divorced dad and his young daughter taking a low-key summer holiday in a budget Turkish resort, a sunshine break that is a kind of farewell.

Wells’s movie ripples and shimmers like a swimming pool of mystery; the way Wells captures mood and moment, never labouring the point or forcing the pace, reminded me of the young Lucrecia Martel. With remarkable confidence, she just lets her movie unspool naturally, like a haunting and deceptively simple short story. The details accumulate; the images reverberate; the unshowy gentleness of the central relationship inexorably deepens in importance.

Aftersun is about childhood memories...

Movie Review: New Kung Fu Cult Master Part 1 (2022) by Wong Jing and Keung Kwok Man
Image
Adapted by filmmakers into numerous movies and television series throughout the years, “The Heaven Sword and the Dragon Sabre” is a very popular wuxia (martial arts and chivalry) novel written by Jin Yong (Louis Cha). Back in 1993, Wong Jing directed “Kung Fu Cult Master” starring Jet Li, Sharla Cheung and Chingmy Yau; it was a much darker take than the novel and a box office failure. A planned sequel was never made even though it ended with a cliffhanger, but due to repeated exposure on television, it gradually became a fan favorite.

Almost thirty years later, together with a new cast and cinematographer Keung Kwok Man, Wong is back with “New Kung Fu Cult Master 1 and 2” in which the first part is a modern update of the original, while part 2 is the current sequel. Replacing Li is Raymond Lam who plays protagonist Zhang Wu Ji, a young kung fu expert...

Ang Lee’s Debut Feature Returns in Exclusive Restoration Trailer for Pushing Hands
Image
Long before Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain, and his era of big-budget Hollywood spectacles, Ang Lee made his debut feature with the 1991 drama Pushing Hands. Co-written by James Schamus, whom Lee would go on to work with throughout his career, the film was a selection at the 1992 Berlin International Film Festival and won three Golden Horse Awards. It’s now undergone a 2K restoration and will be getting a theatrical release starting on April 1 courtesy of Film Movement. Ahead of the run, we’re pleased to debut the exclusive trailer.

Marking Lee’s first chapter of his “Father Knows Best” trilogy––followed by his subsequent dramas The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)––the film follows an elderly tai chi master Mr. Chu (Sihung Lung) from Beijing who struggles to adjust to life in New York, living with his Americanized son Alex (Ye-tong Wang). Chu immediately butts heads with his put-upon white daughter-in-law,...

Tim Roth, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Benedict Wong, Meng'er Zhang, Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Florian Munteanu in Shang-Chi et la Légende des Dix Anneaux (2021)
In a new featurette for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” star Simu Liu explains the myriad of martial arts styles that went into creating the fight sequences of the Marvel film — not to mention immense the effort he and the cast put into training.

Liu talks about learning both tai chi and wing chun in the clip, which also gives a behind the scenes look at some of his rehearsal and the elaborate stunt work that specifically went into the film’s action sequence aboard a runaway bus.

“‘Shang-Chi’ is at its core a Marvel movie, that comes with a promise of action and a certain promise to the quality of the sequences we’re about to deliver,” Liu said. “We’re going to incorporate a lot of different styles of martial arts. Tai chi, which is very, very flowy. Another one is wing chun, which is a bit more combative,...

Josh Gad Addresses LeFou’s Sexuality on Disney Plus’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Prequel Series: ‘Expect the Unexpected’ (Exclusive)
Image
Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”

Queer Disney fans raised a rainbow flag in 2017 when it was revealed that in the Bill Condon-directed live-action adaptation of the animated hit “Beauty and the Beast,” LeFou — played by Josh Gad — was gay. Now the big question is, will LeFou be gay in the upcoming “Beauty and the Beast” Disney Plus series? That project revolves around the friendship between LeFou and Gaston (Luke Evans). More specifically, because it’s a prequel, will a storyline include LeFou’s coming-out journey?

“You’re going to have to tune in when this show airs to see what we’re working up, but in the process of working on it, we’re asking ourselves every relevant question about these characters and endeavoring to do right by them and by this world,” Gad says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.

Stephen Chow, Siu-Lung Leung, Qiu Yuen, and Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan in Crazy Kung-Fu (2004)
The Kung Fu Belt System Explained
Stephen Chow, Siu-Lung Leung, Qiu Yuen, and Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan in Crazy Kung-Fu (2004)
the article was originally published at The Mma Guru

Kung fu is an ancient form of martial arts that has been passed down from master to student. Traditionally, kung fu did not have a belt system. Instead, students would signify moving through the ranks with a scroll signed by the master they were training under.

Eventually, belts were used in kung fu to signify seniority within the practice. Masters would pass on different colored belts to their students as a demonstration of moving through their journey toward mastery. Today, moving through the kung fu belt system is proof of achievement and encouragement for students looking to progress.

What Is Kung Fu?

Unlike karate and other forms of martial arts that have origins in Japan, kung fu has origins in China. Monks practiced kung fu early on for health and self-defense on their quest toward enlightenment.

While some may think of...

Warrior Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Not How We Do Business
Image
This Warrior review contains spoilers.

Warrior Season 2 Episode 3

“Not How We Do Business” sums up the latest episode of Warrior in two ways. First, it’s a line that Zing (Dustin Nguyen) lays on O’Hara (Kieran Biew) when he finally breaks away from being a debt collector for the Fung Hai. “Not how we do business” also works on a meta level, this episode only has one Kung Fu fight. That’s weak for a Bruce Lee inspired show. There are two other fight scenes, but they’re scrappy brawls the likes of which can be found in any action drama.

Bruce Lee fans want Kung Fu, and not just any Kung Fu. As part of the Little Dragon’s legacy, it must be great Kung Fu. The lone Kung Fu scene in this episode is good and serves to introduce a pivotal new character, but that’s not enough.

Yifei Liu in Mulan (2020)
Mulan: The Real History of the Chinese Legend
Yifei Liu in Mulan (2020)
Disney has been killing it with live-action remakes of their beloved animated movie catalog. While the upcoming Mulan might look like yet another relatively straight adaptation of a previous animated film, it’s not quite the same. Mulan, in 1998 and now, is based on an ancient Chinese legend. Not a fairy tale. Her story was commonly known across Asia long before Disney’s animated feature, and it’s that story (as much as the animated feature) that makes up the inspiration for the new film.

When it was announced that the new live-action film would not include the songs or her mini-dragon sidekick Mushu, fans of the “original” were disappointed. But Disney is hoping for an international blockbuster, especially in that lucrative Chinese film market, and many Asian fans were relieved to hear of the planned changes. In China, Disney’s first Mulan feature flopped because audiences saw it as...

Tai Chi Master is the full uncut version of the film Tai ji: Zhang San Feng, and as such it’s a thousand times better than the cut and dubbed version that was previously released on DVD...

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Sequel Gains Harry Shum Jr.
At long last, a sequel to the 2000 martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is getting under way, with backing from The Weinstein Company. The cast is still incomplete, but with cameras beginning to roll this week, Glee actor Harry Shum Jr. has just been added in a lead role.

Penned by John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom) and directed by Yuen Woo-ping (Iron Monkey, Tai-Chi Master), the movie, once subtitled The Green Destiny, picks up the story 20 years after the events of the first Crouching Tiger. It centers on four heroes of the martial arts world — Silent Wolf, Yu Shu-lien, Tie-Fang and Snow Vase — who must use their courage and skills to keep the legendary sword Green Destiny from falling into the hands of the villainous Hades Dai.

Shum Jr. will portray Tie-Fang. Donnie Yen is already on board to play Silent Wolf, and Michelle Yeoh is set to play Yu Shu-lien.

Touring the Movies that Influenced 'The Matrix'
You could do something similar to what editor Robert Grigsby Wilson has done here taking a look at Lana and Andy Wachowski's The Matrix and pointing out all the moments in the film influenced by, or paying homage to, other films, but it is nonetheless fascinating to take such a trip through film and in this case several martial arts features, anime and even a speech from Philip K. Dick. I've included the list of films just below the video, give it a look and enjoy. 0:27 - Fist of Legend (1994) 0:38 - Tai-Chi Master (Twin Dragons) (1993) 0:44 - Fist of Legend (1994) 0:48 - Tai-Chi Master (Twin Dragons) (1993) 0:53 - Drunken Master (1978) 1:02 - Fist of Legend (1994) 1:09 - The Killer (1989) 1:19 - Fist of Legend (1994) 1:21 - Iron Monkey (1993) 1:31 - Once Upon A Time In China (1991) 1:36 - Fist of Legend (1994) 1:41 - Tai-Chi Master (Twin Dragons...

Must Watch: Everything Is A Remix - The Matrix
Reboots, remakes, recycled plots are nothing new these days. Just like history is cyclical, so are movies. Directors, writers and actors are influenced by others that have come before them. Hollywood has many innovators, but it is often replicated and nothing is 100% original. The series Everything is a Remix, produced by Kirby Ferguson strives to prove that point. The videos he creates take fans inside their favorite films to get a close look at what movies borrow from movies before them.

Here is Ferguson's most recent video that takes a closer look at the seemingly unique film The Matrix by The Wachowski Brothers. Check out the video below and see fore yourself:

Here are the respective films that influenced The Matrix and their timestamps:

0:27 – Fist of Legend (1994)

0:38 – Tai-Chi Master (Twin Dragons) (1993)

0:44 – Fist of Legend (1994)

0:48 – Tai-Chi Master (Twin Dragons) (1993)

0:53 – Drunken Master (1978)

1:02 – Fist of Legend (1994)

Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss in Matrix (1999)
‘Everything is a Remix’ Breaks Down ‘The Matrix’
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss in Matrix (1999)
"Everyone steals from everyone, that's movies." The guys in Swingers knew it and we all know it too. Everyone who has ever made a movie has been influenced by someone before them; even the people who invented the art form had influences from outside film. Of course many people innovate, only to to have their techniques ripped off later, but it's almost impossible to find something that is 100% original in every aspect. That's more or less the thesis of the video series Everything is a Remix, produced by Kirby Ferguson. He produces videos (some of which we've highlighted on the site [1]) that visually show how some of our favorite movies borrow from movies before them. Ferguson is still working on the fourth installment of the series, but in the meantime he has released a video dedicated to the 1999 hit film The Matrix by The Wachowski Brothers. Part of the reason...

New Trailer for True Legend Appears
Martial arts fantasy True Legend is an upcoming film I’m very much looking forward to and a new trailer for it has appeared online.

The film is directed by Yuen Woo-Ping who is most famously known for his extensive work as the martial arts choreographer for such films as The Matrix, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Once Upon a Time in China. However, Master Yuen Woo-Ping is also a very capable film director having made numerous fantastic martial arts films like Iron Monkey, Jet Li’s Twin Warriors, and of course the Jackie Chan classic Drunken Master.

Written by To Chi-Long, who also wrote Jet Li’s Fearless, True Legend marks Yuen Woo-Ping’s return to directing feature-length films as he has not done so since 1996 with Iron Monkey 2. Watch the new trailer for True Legend below.

The film is a psychological mystery drama set in Hong Kong, the...
