Image
When Tim Roth was first approached to co-star inGridlock’d(1997), he was hesitant about working with Tupac Shakur.

According to THR, in a recent discussion at Luxembourg City Film Fest, Roth revealed the journey that ultimately led to him acting alongside legendary music and film icon Tupac. The film, a crime comedy directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, follows two heroin addicts, Spoon (Tupac) and Stretch (Roth), as they navigate a bureaucratic nightmare while trying to enter rehab. Westworld actress Melanie Thandiwe Newton also starred in the film. Initially, Laurence Fishburne was set to star in the film, and Roth was eager to work with him. But after Fishburne dropped out, Roth was informed that a rapper would be taking his place—an idea he immediately rejected.

Janet Jackson Goes On Bizarre Kamala Harris Tangent Over VP’s Family And Heritage
Image
Updated with statement from Janet Jackson’s rep: Janet Jackson knows a lot about the Rhythm Nation, but she clearly doesn’t know anything about Vice President Kamala Harris’ heritage.

In a sprawling and at times confusing interview with The Guardian, Jackson postulated about Kamala Harris’ family background while seemingly admitting that she did not know what she was talking about.

“Well, you know what they supposedly said? She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian,” she told the reporter. When the profile writer clarified that she is of both Black and South Asian heritage, Jackson answered, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told they discovered her father was white.”

Following the backlash around her interview, Jackson released a statement through her manager Mo Elmasri, who told...

“I will quit rapping..”: Drake Puts His Rap Career on the Line After Kendrick Lamar’s One Upsetting Allegation
Image
Kendrick Lamar has been busy putting up an attack plan against Drake, and he just dropped another diss track titled Not Like Us. However, Lamar’s earlier track Meet the Grahams addressed each member of Drake’s family. The Poetic Justice singer struck a chord when he addressed a “baby girl,” suggesting that Drizzy has a secret daughter that he had been hiding from the public. Now, Drake reportedly swears on his career that Lamar’s allegations are false.

Take Care singer Drake responds to Kendrick Lamar’s allegations in new diss track

The feud between the singers kicked off when Lamar dissed J. Cole and Drake in an uncredited verse in Like That after Cole mentioned them as the “big three” in First Person Shooter. Drake responded with Push Ups, and then Lamar came up with Euphoria and 6:16 in LA. The God’s Plan singer dropped Family Matters on Friday,...

Apple’s Usher Super Bowl Trailer Features LeBron James, J Balvin And Jungkook; Halftime Show Billed As “30 Years In The Making”
Image
Usher’s performance next month during halftime of Super Bowl Lviii on CBS is getting an extra promo push from Apple – with a retro flourish.

The tech giant, which took over from Pepsi last year as the lead sponsor of the halftime show, has released a one-minute trailer (watch it above) titled “30 Years in the Making.” Set to the pop star’s 2004 hit “Yeah,” the trailer shows a range of clips of fans, street musicians, a church choir along with recognizable figures like NBA star LeBron James, Colombian singer-rapper J Balvin and BTS singer Jungkook. The main track pulses recognizably, but is mixed with flute, classical piano, choral versions and grainy camcorder footage of kids singing and Usher at a recording-studio mixing board.

The “30 years” tag refers to the long arc of the 45-year-old singer’s career, which began when he joined an R&b group in his native Dallas...

She said: “It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son.

“There have been multiple hands involved and there remains so much surrounding the life and death of my brother Tupac and our Shakur family overall. We are seeking real justice, on all fronts.”

Hal Hartley in Meanwhile (2011)
The Criterion Channel Announce September Lineup: Hal Hartley, High School Horror, Peggy Sue Got Married & More
Hal Hartley in Meanwhile (2011)
Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.

Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. The Surprising Connection Between ‘Pee-wee’s Playhouse’ and ‘Boyz n the Hood’
Image
On the surface, the whimsy of Pee-wee’s Playhouse appears to be worlds apart from the solemnity of Boyz N the Hood, other than the curious resemblance between Cowboy Curtis and Furious Styles. But it’s no coincidence that Laurence Fishburne and other key creatives were part of both projects.

As a USC film student in the late 1980s, John Singleton spent one summer working as a security guard-slash-production assistant on the set of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. “John was the lowest of lowly PAs,” recalled Fishburne on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995. “He was working on the door and his job was to stop people at the door and go, ‘Are you supposed to be here? Do you have the proper ID?’”

Singleton would press Fishburne for stories of working with Spike Lee, as the actor had appeared in School Daze a few months prior. The budding filmmaker...

Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

A Compassionate Spy (Steve James)

See an exclusive clip above.

The latest film from acclaimed documentarian Steve James, A Compassionate Spy, comes with a fascinating subject: the spy who leaked nuclear information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union, therefore ensuring that America could not establish a nuclear monopoly on the world. It’s easy to see why James would be drawn to the spy, Theodore “Ted” Hall, and his wife Joan as he has often been interested in using individuals as the framework to explore larger societal issues. Utilizing a hybrid of recreations, archival footage, and modern-day interviews, James crafts a portrait of a man, a relationship, and the sheer weight of the decision to betray your country to save the world.

Image
Rap legend Tupac Shakur’s ring has become “the most valuable Hip Hop artifact ever sold at auction” after bidding topped $1 million (Rs 8.20 crore).

The ‘California Love’ hitmaker wore the custom gold, ruby and diamond crown piece during his final public appearance at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, just a week before he was shot dead, and it has now sold for an unprecedented $1,016,000, far exceeding the $300,000 estimate it was expected to fetch, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s Global Head of Science and Popular Culture, said in a statement, “This one-of-a-kind, custom ring was meticulously designed by Pac and is among the final products of his boundless creative energy – a unique artifact from a period of time that is a testament to his enduring influence on Hip Hop”.

Police search house in relation to Tupac Shakur murder
Image
Just days after what would have been Tupac Shakur’s 52nd birthday, police have announced they issued a search warrant at a home in Henderson, Nevada, a city that sits under 20 miles outside of Las Vegas, where the rapper was gunned down in 1996.

According to Lt. Jason Johansson of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “The search warrant that we conducted is in connection with the Tupac Shakur case…It has been a while…It’s a case that’s gone unsolved and hopefully one day we can change that.” As per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the scene of the warrant appeared to be a tense one, with officers approaching the home with guns drawn. No arrests appeared to have been made.

Tupac Shakur was just 25 when he was murdered in a drive-by shooting in September 1996. Following attending the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon bout, Shakur and his driver, Death Row Records...

Tupac Shakur's Sister Sekyiwa Honors His "Lasting Impact" at Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony
Image
Tupac Shakur has finally received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On June 7, the rapper was honored in a posthumous ceremony hosted by radio personality Big Boy, with Tupac's sister Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur accepting the honor on the late star's behalf. Writer Jamal Joseph, Los Angeles City Council member Hugo Soto-Martinez, and "Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur" director Allen Hughes also spoke at the event.

In his speech, documented in Variety's live stream, Hughes recognized Tupac's radical legacy, saying he "has become a global symbol of rebellion - a symbol as visible and important as Malcolm X and Che Guevara, and an inspiration for activists . . . Indeed, the entire world feels Tupac's message."

Joseph, who was Tupac's godfather, also paid tribute to the way Tupac has continued to inspire people around the world. "Put your hands over your heart if that phrase, 'The rose that grew from concrete,...

All Tupac Shakur's Movie & TV Roles, Ranked
Image
Content warning: The following contains discussions of drug addiction

In addition to being one of the most celebrated rappers of all time, Tupac Shakur's movies proved he was also a fine actor in his own right. After making his screen debut as a background player in the star-studded comedy Nothing But Trouble in 1991, Tupac earned critical acclaim for his villainous role as Bishop in his follow-up film, Juice. In 1993, Tupac once again shifted gears by playing a soft-hearted mailman opposite Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice. In total, Tupac starred in seven feature films and two television episodes prior to his death, not counting appearing in archived footage or as himself on various TV shows.

Whenever Tupac Shakur is mentioned, everyone thinks about his music career. That makes sense as he's considered one of the greatest rappers of all time. However, his acting career likely deserves more credit. While he...

Tupac Shakur is finally getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 7, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said.

Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, Tupac’s sister, will accept the honor on behalf of Tupac, who was shot and killed in 1996.

Noted Los Angeles radio host Big Boy will emcee the ceremony. Allen Hughes, who directed a number of Tupac videos and the Hulu docuseries “Dear Mama” about Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur will speak, as will Jamal Joseph, the author of “Tupac Shakur, Tupac Shakur Legacy.”

Tupac Shakur star ceremony set for June 7, at 10:30 am.

Janet Jackson Is Still Nasty After All These Years
Image
Madison Square Garden in New York was a party on Monday night. That’s because Janet Jackson had taken over the arena for the first of two shows on her Together Again Tour. As the audience waited for the show to begin, the DJ got the energy up as he pumped kickback classics like Faith Evans’ “Love Like This” and, of course, some Jackson 5.

Ludacris opened, serving as a surprisingly fitting special guest. The conceit of his set was not knowing if the crowd was really full of “day-one Luda fans,...

Tupac Shakur Could've Played Mace Windu In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Image
Tupac Shakur's socially conscious poetry and fiery, political lyrics are forever cemented in music history, but the legendary rapper also had a burgeoning career in acting. Upon the time of his tragic murder in September 1996, Tupac was becoming all the more prolific as a performer, his filmography growing even after his death. What's more, there was a chance that, eventually, audiences would have seen the rapper/actor pop up in big-budget movies like the "Star Wars" prequels, in which George Lucas may have cast him as Mace Windu.

Tupac was always involved in the world of the stage ever since his childhood days at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he acted in Shakespeare productions that would influence his depictions of gang conflicts. The artist's breakout lead role was in the 1992 crime drama "Juice," in which future Mace Windu actor Samuel L. Jackson also appeared in. Besides this,...
